This refereed publication describes the Lab Learning (PSY 390/492) course developed in
the Psychology Department at TCNJ. This paper was a collaborative effort among two of
my colleagues, Dr. Andrew Leynes and Dr. Beth Paul, and two of my former students,
Chris Medvecky and Amy Benson. Chris and Amy prepared the first draft of the piece,
but this draft was substantially revised by me (40%), Andy Leynes (30%) and Beth Paul
(30%). The piece was published in a book describing ways in which institutions can
increase undergraduate involvement in research. Our contribution was one of several
selected from a large pool of submissions from authors at other primarily undergraduate
institutions.
ACER is the top interdisciplinary journal in the field of alcohol research. It includes both
basic and applied research and therefore has a very wide readership. According to its
website, ACER‟s current impact factor is 2.933. The ISI Journal Citations Reports (JCR)
ranking in 2006 was 3/8 in the substance abuse category. Its rejection rate during the past

M. P. Martinetti 12/16/2011 - p. 3
year was 38%. This manuscript describes data collected at Temple University in
collaboration with Michael Lewis. Zeeshan Khan (‟06 Psychology and Biology)
participated in the 2005 Summer Undergraduate Research Program at TCNJ and earned
co-authorship on this paper. My contributions to this paper comprised 90% of the writing
as this paper describes my dissertation research.
Martinetti, M. P., Lowery, E., Vona, S., Wichnick A., Adler, R. & Finch, D. (2006). Limitedaccess
consumption of ascending ethanol concentrations in alcohol-preferring (P), nonpreferring
(NP), and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental
Research, 30, 836-843.
As noted above, ACER‟s impact factor is 2.933 and the JCR ranking in 2006 was 3/8 in the
substance abuse category. This paper describes an experiment conducted entirely in the
Alcohol Lab at TCNJ and includes five student co-authors. The second author, Emily
Lowery, participated in the 2005 Summer Undergraduate Research Program at TCNJ, and
earned authorship on the publication in her senior year at TCNJ. The other authors are
TCNJ alums who contributed to the paper while they were students in my lab. My
contributions comprised 75% of the writing, Emily‟s contributions comprised 15%, and the
remaining 10% was equally distributed among the other four co-authors.
Spiga, R., Martinetti, M. P., Meisch, R. A., Cowan, K., & Hursh, S. (2005). Methadone and
nicotine self-administration in humans: A behavioral economic analysis.
Psychopharmacology, 178, 223-231.
Psychopharmacology, published by Springer-Verlag, is one of the premier journals for
behavioral pharmacology research. This journal has an impact factor of 3.146 (JCR, 2004)
and received a percentile rank within the discipline of 86% in 2002
(http://mdl.ipc.pku.edu.cn/pdf/jcr-2002). The above paper describes the results of a study
conducted by Ralph Spiga at the University of Texas at Houston. After accepting a faculty
position at Temple University and serving on my dissertation committee, Ralph asked me
to co-author this paper with him. Ralph is a renowned behavioral pharmacologist, has
done both human and non-human animal work, and is an expert in behavioral economic
studies of drug abuse. I provided 40% of the writing, and made substantial contributions to
the data analyses and graphing.
N.B. The gap in publications between these years exists for two reasons:
1) I was employed as temporary faculty for two years at TCNJ (2000-2002, full-time for one year
and ¾-time for the second year) before beginning the tenure-track position and thus, I did not have
a laboratory during this time.
2) I did not receive laboratory space until the end of my first tenure-track year, and then waited
several months to obtain animal caging and other supplies before I could begin my research
program. Thus, it took several years before my laboratory was established and enough data could
be collected to begin producing published work.
ECP is a nationally recognized, peer-reviewed journal published by the American
Psychological Association (APA). Its impact factor is 1.696 (JCR, 2004) and received a
percentile rank within the discipline of 72% in 2002 (http://mdl.ipc.pku.edu.cn/pdf/jcr-
2002). The above paper appeared in a special issue of ECP, commemorating the “Decade
of Behavior.” Papers illustrating the use of behavioral techniques to approach
pharmacological questions were included in the issue. This paper appeared with papers by
several renowned behavioral pharmacologists, including Richard Meisch, who is a coauthor
on the Spiga et al. paper listed above. The second author, Matthew Andrzejewski,
and I conducted the research and wrote the paper while completing our graduate studies at
Temple University. We shared these responsibilities equally. Philip Hineline and Michael
Lewis were our respective mentors and provided conceptual contributions to the project.
Sarafino, E. P., Paterson, M. E., & Murphy, E. L. (1998). Age and the impacts of triggers in
childhood asthma. Journal of Asthma, 35(2), 211-215.
The Journal of Asthma is a nationally recognized, peer-reviewed journal of research on
asthma. This paper was the result of an Independent Study project conducted while I was
an undergraduate at Trenton State College. Edward Sarafino was the faculty supervisor of
the project. Erin Murphy and I produced a manuscript as part of the independent study
requirement, and Ed used that manuscript to form the foundation for the published paper. I
received second (rather than third) authorship on the paper because I provided substantive
conceptual comments to Ed‟s draft of the manuscript.
ACADEMIC ADVISING
Current advising load is 27 students, but has been as high as 49 students in a single semester.
I am one of three current Psychology faculty qualified to advise Psychology majors with a
concentration in Biopsychology. My role as an advisor takes on a diverse set of responsibilities:
I meet with advisees regularly to discuss not only their academic progress and future course
selections, but also their career goals, personal struggles, and academic challenges. Most of my
advisees meet with me at least once every semester, but several others engage in “virtual
advising” over email. These students include traditional Psychology majors,
Psychology/Education double-majors, Biology and Psychology double-majors and some
Psychology minors.

SERVICE RECORD
(All dates indicate academic years, unless otherwise indicated.)
Professional
Manuscript Review for Behavioural Pharmacology, November 2007
M. P. Martinetti 12/16/2011 - p. 13
I was one of two reviewers for a “short report” manuscript submitted to Behavioural
Pharmacology, a European journal that publishes original papers describing behavioral
approaches to studying pharmacology. The paper I reviewed addressed the use of
Herrnstein‟s (1970) matching law to describe alcohol consumption in rats.
Invited Talk at Hunter College, Ph.D. Program in Biopsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience,
April 2007
As part of its Colloquium Series in Behavioral Economics, I was invited to deliver a talk to
Ph.D. students in the Behavioral Neuroscience program at Hunter College in April of
2007. In my talk, I described the matching law studies I have performed over the past
several years and discussed the utility of the matching law for examining behavior
reinforced by drugs of abuse.
Manuscript Review for Alcohol, September 2006
I was one of two reviewers for a manuscript submitted to Alcohol. Alcohol publishes
papers of methodological interest and is a frequent outlet for research on animal models of
alcohol abuse. The paper described an attempt to discern the physiological mechanisms
distinct to alcohol “seeking” and consumption.
Manuscript Review for Sex Roles, September 2006
I was invited to review a manuscript for Sex Roles, and interdisciplinary journal addressing
gender roles in psychology. The paper was an empirical analysis of the experiences of
women faculty at small colleges.
Dissertation Review for Heather Peters, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New
Zealand, Spring 2006
I was asked to serve as an external dissertation examiner for Heather Peters, who
completed her doctoral work in Wellington, New Zealand. Dr. Peters‟ thesis advisor, Dr.
David Harper, contacted me to serve on this committee because of my background in the
area of quantitative models of choice applied to alcohol consumption in animal models.
Dr. Peters‟ dissertation investigated rats‟ performance on concurrent chain schedules of
reinforcement using oral ethanol as the reinforcer.
Symposium Invitation, Association for Behavior Analysis, May 2005
Martinetti, M. P., Vona, S., Wichnick, A., & Andrzejewski, M. A. (2005). Applications
of the matching law to animal models of alcohol abuse. Symposium presentation to
the Association for Behavior Analysis, Chicago, IL (May).

M. P. Martinetti 12/16/2011 - p. 14
I was invited by Amy Odum, who is a faculty member at Utah State University and a
leading member of the Behavioral Pharmacology division of the Association for Behavior
Analysis, to participate in a symposium on reinforcing effects of alcohol at the ABA
annual meeting in Chicago. Two of my former students, Sally Vona and Alison Wichnick,
participated in the preparations for this presentation and the data from Sally‟s Senior
Honors Thesis in Psychology were included in the presentation. The fourth author,
Matthew Andrzejewski, is a collaborator at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and coauthored
Martinetti et al. (2000). The Association for Behavior Analysis is an
international organization and all presentations are refereed.
Invitation to Review a Manuscript for Behavioral Neuroscience, February 2004
I was asked to review a manuscript entitled, "Congenital anhedonia in rats bred for learned
helplessness: A study using the matching law" (Sanchis-Segura, Spanagel, Henn &
Vollmayr) for Behavioral Neuroscience, a journal published by the American
Psychological Association.
