St Paul’s High School Mission Statement:
St Paul’s High School is missioned by the Jesuits in English Canada to educate students as
whole persons to become men for others and so assist the Church in building the Kingdom
of God.
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Blessings and Happy New Year, I hope everyone
had a peaceful and restful break.
Shortly before the Christmas break, St Paul’s
Annual Christmas Hampers were delivered to
eight current families whose son attends the
School. The hampers were very well received. I
speak for both the families and the School by
expressing thanks to one and all who donated to
this worthy cause which is so close to the heart of
the school.
In early January, I travelled to New Orleans to
attend my final Jesuit Secondary Education
Association (JSEA) Presidents Conference. This
would be an opportunity to learn from my
colleagues, preside at the liturgy and pray for
their wisdom and success as I bid them farewell.
Time in New Orleans was cut short by an urgent
call to return home to Nova Scotia to anoint my
critically ill father, make the necessary
arrangements and say “we’ll meet again soon.”
He returned home 29 January. Thank you for
your prayers and to all who have expressed their
concern for him and my family. Such moments
demonstrate the true nature of the St Paul’s High
School community.
In mid-February I have been asked to meet with
my new superior and colleagues in Rome as part
of the transition from St Paul’s High School to
the Gregorian University Foundation. With all
the transitions taking place, it is hard to believe
that the second half the school year is upon us!
This means there are many things to bring to
completion by the end of the school year. Before
we know it, it will be time for the Grad Mass
followed soon thereafter by the handing out of
awards and diplomas to the Class of 2013. I wish
everyone a successful and inspired second term.
As you know, in mid-
January we experienced
a vehicle-student
collision at the Grant
and Laidlaw crosswalk.
A reminder to parents
and students to exercise extreme caution when
crossing in front of the School, while dropping
off on Holland or near the construction zone on
the South Campus. Please be aware that The
Winnipeg Police Service is in the process of
monitoring the area in front of the School. My
understanding is they will first monitor driver
behavior and practices but eventually start
ticketing. We don’t want anyone else hurt nor do
we want anyone to get a ticket for speeding or
disobeying the traffic lights. You have been
warned…
Construction of the MultiPlex is progressing as
we enter a critical period for the Partners in the
Mission Capital Campaign. There is still $2.2
million that needs to be raised to ensure the
completion of the Campaign and my goal is to
have as much of this raised by my last day, 31
July. I invite all those who would like to make a
contribution to the campaign, no matter what size,
to be in contact with Shawn Alwis ’00, Director
of Advancement & Alumni Affairs or with me
directly. There are still naming opportunities
available. As a side note, a camera will soon be
installed inside the MultiPlex. Once it is up and
running you will be able to see the project
develop to completion. The outdoor camera can
be found at www.stpauls.mb.ca.
For those families with a son in grade 12, please
be sure to check the online community for
updates and registration deadlines for the various
grad events. This is where most of the events
communication will take place.
Lastly, thank you to our Faculty and Staff for all
their hard work to this point in the year and
during the months to come.
In Christ
Fr Alan Fogarty SJ
President
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
The month of January saw a return to traditional
winter in Manitoba. After two above normal
temperature winters the return of sub -30 ˚C lows
reminds us that we do indeed live in the centre of
the continent. The cold weather didn’t put a
damper on school activities or classes. Basketball,
hockey, wrestling and indoor track, along with
debating, and Reach for the Top games and
tournaments and dinner theatre auditions all took
place in the lead up to the Exam Period along
with teachers finishing off First Term material
and review classes. The month of February
promises to be a very busy one with report cards
being sent home followed by Parent-Teacher
Interviews, Course Option forms and meetings,
First Term Awards, Winter Sports Day, the
Annual Fr Paul Crouch SJ Pancake Breakfast,
Catholic School’s Day Inservice and the end of
regular seasons, final tournaments and the
beginning of playoffs in winter school sports.
Thanks and Congratulations
I would first of all like to
thank all members of the St
Paul’s community who
contributed to the annual
Christmas Hamper
Program. I especially thank
the Maroon and White Society
under the direction of Mr Rob Merello ’89 for
their leadership in collaboration the numerous
Mentor Teachers, in helping to create 25 Mentor
Group hampers that were delivered to the families
that we received from the Christmas Cheer
Board! In addition, thank you to the whole Front
Office staff, but particularly Mrs Naomi Bilan,
Ms Nahannai Lewis and Mrs Inger Schnerch
along and Advancement Staff, eleven Mentor
Groups and teachers, administrators and other
teachers, and numerous community members for
helping to make up eight wonderful hampers that
we delivered to needy families in our own
community. All together well over $15,000 was
contributed to families in the Winnipeg
community that needed our support this
Christmas!
Congratulations to Director
Mr Ray Comeault,
Assistant Director Ms
MaryJane MacLennan,
Producer Mr Joel Adair
with assistance from Mr
Kevin Sterner and Mr
Greg Matthew ’72, and all
of the faculty, staff and students who assisted in
putting on a very challenging and successful
production of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s
Nest” in December. Drew Jensen’s McMurphy,
Ainsley Beveridges’s Nurse Ratched, and Adam
Saunder’s Dale Harding performances were all
memorable and were complemented by a very
strong cast of characters. Of course thank you and
congratulations to all of the staff and students
involved in the production. Special mention
should be made however of the efforts of Mrs
Linda Monsterski in coordinating make-up and
Mrs Sandra Caron for costumes. I once again
look forward to the upcoming Dinner Theatre
production in March which is a reprise of a
Merlin’s Magic a play written and directed by our
very own Mr David Beeston ’76.
Congratulations as well to Mr Rob Gardner, our
new Music teacher, and Mrs Jacqueline
Jackson, our Choir Director (with assistance
from Fr Michel Boutilier SJ), for an excellent
Advent Christmas Concert of our school bands
and choir in December. I enjoyed the concert
immensely and once again felt it was a great start
to the Advent season in preparation for
Christmas.
I am also grateful, along with the whole staff I am
sure, to the Parent Guild for their generosity and
hospitality in treating the entire staff to a
delicious luncheon just prior to the Christmas
Break. Thank you especially to those who
coordinated the event.
I would also like to thank the
Hospitality Committee of the
Parent Guild for the
refreshments, and President
Mrs Robyn Wolfe and Vice
President Mrs Coleen
Battagelli-Smith for their
presence during the Open
House. I am also grateful to
the student speakers (Angus MacLennan ’16,
Roshan Sadhak ’15, Marshall Klein ’14, and
Student Council President Eddie Sherlock ’13),
Mr John Yunyk ’03 our Director of Admissions,
members of the Crusader Basketball team and
one of our Crusader Hockey goalies, Ben
Thorlakson ’13, for hosting shooting contests in
the gym, the numerous Department Heads and
staff members who came to answer questions
during the Open House and to Mr Rob Merello
’89 for supervising the Maroon and White
Society who assisted as ushers and tour guides.
We had a very good crowd of interested applicant
families who appreciated the opportunity to learn
more about the school.
By the end of January, First Term Exams will be
completed and thanks to the efforts of your
son’s teachers they will be marked and First
Term marks calculated. Upon the resumption of
classes, on the first day back, February 4, 2013
we will have a special 10 Period School Day
(each period shortened to 30 minutes) so that
your son will have the opportunity to review his
exam with his teacher. Soon thereafter the Front
Office will print your son’s First Term Report
Card which will be mailed out on February 8,
2013. The mark reported in each subject
represents the average of your son’s performance
on the recent examinations and his work over the
course of the First Term. I congratulate all of
the students who studied hard and have
achieved to their potential.
The end of First Term
is an excellent time
for taking stock of
how the year has been
going thus far. Please
help your son
celebrate his First
Term successes and reflect on his academic
standing. If he has not performed as well as he or
you expected, it is important for him to be honest
with himself and you about what has contributed
to him achieving at a level below his potential,
and to make changes that will allow him to
experience a greater measure of academic success
in Second Term. If your son might have
squandered his numerous learning opportunities,
or has relied on his natural ability to achieve a
passable mark well below his potential, the
Second Term represents a challenge for him to
make the necessary changes so that by the end of
the year he will be in a better position than he
finds himself in now.
Congratulations to the
Crusader Hockey
teams for excellent
seasons thus far with
both teams in first
place in their
respective divisions.
Crusader Hockey Team 1 is coached by Head
Coach Mr Andrew Harder ’93, and Assistant
Coach Mr Chad Horrill ’93 in the (Division1)
Platinum Promotions Division) and has won both
the tournament in Denver in November and the
Tournament of Champions at the beginning of
January. Crusader Hockey Team 2 coached by
Head Coach Dr Rob Puchniak ’89, and
Assistant Coaches Doug MacInnes ’89 and Mr
Cam Krisko ’10 play in the (Division 2)
Winnipeg Free Press Division. Good luck to both
teams as they head into playoffs mid-February.
Congratulations to the
Varsity Crusader
Basketball team, under the
direction of Head Coach
Mr Jeff Laping ’89, and
Assistant Coaches Mr Joe
Kwan’97 and Mr Sunny
Kaila ’01 on for their very
strong play so far this year. They have won two
tournaments already including the Daniel
McIntyre Invitational before Christmas and Tec
Voc’s Winnipeg Invitational Tournament where
they beat the number one ranked Garden City
Fighting Gophers in the Final! Congratulations to
the whole team and to Justus Alleyn ’13 for
being named tournament MVP in both
tournaments! The Junior Varsity team (under the
direction of head coach Mr Ted Higham) is also
doing very well, having won their last two
tournaments including our own Nick Laping ’61
Memorial Tournament which we hosted January
19-20, 2013. We are once again offering two
Grade 9 Basketball teams. One team is playing in
the second tier of the WWAC Junior Varsity
league under the direction of head coach Mr
Casey Whitfield while team two is playing under
the direction of Mr Amanjot Sandhu ’08 and
Nirbir Grewal ’07 in the Grade 9 division of the
PTAA league with Mr Dave Owczar as
moderator. Good luck to all of the Basketball
teams as they continue their seasons.
The Crusader Wrestling
team under the direction of
Head Coach Mr Toby
Rutner this year with Dr
Rod Uzat and Mr Dennis
Kuzenko moderating had
several wrestlers do very
well in the first major
tournament of the season, especially our own
wrestling sensation Caleb Rutner ’13.
Meanwhile, the Crusader Track team under the
direction of Head Coach Mr Jeff McMillan is
just beginning the indoor season. Please check
Saturday, February 4 th . Only in rare cases do we
consider an application after the second Entrance
circumstances that warrant a late application so
please encourage someone who may only have
recently heard about applying to St Paul’s to do
so. Returning students will receive
Reservation and Enrolment (renewal)
Budget meeting.
Wall of Excellence Update:
In the next month the Wall of Excellence will be
updated with award winners from last school year
based on Individual, Program and Service
excellence over the last year. The Wall of
Excellence is meant to provide public recognition
of excellence within our community but also to
encourage current members of our community to
aspire to work towards their potential and towards
the school’s ideal of become a “Man for Others.”
The work of becoming a true “Man for Others”
and seeking “the Magis” involves going beyond
just getting good marks, or developing
intellectual competence to finding out how one
can give oneself to the greater good for the sake
of the Church and the world. Please take a look at
the updated titles and pictures and help us
Given the importance of parents in their son’s
education and formation, we believe it is
important that parents understand what we are
trying to accomplish at St Paul’s in our education
program. We believe that we can improve on the
collaboration and partnership in educating your
sons while they are at St Paul’s High School. For
this reason, Fr Fogarty and I decided five years
ago to organize an annual mandatory meeting
for all parents of Grade 9 students who plan
on returning to St Paul’s the next year. Three
years ago we added a meeting for all Grade 10
parents as well. It is important that at least one
parent of each student in Grades 9 and 10 attend
one of these important meetings which take place
prior to the presentation on course options
organized by the Counselling Department. The
purpose of the both meetings is to clarify the
school’s expectations and policies so that we
can work together more effectively in
providing your son with a St Paul’s education.
The meetings will begin at 7:00 pm in Aulneau
Room and the Cafeteria and conclude with coffee
and refreshments. At around 8:00 pm the
Counselling Department will then make a
presentation on course options for students
entering Grade 10 and 11 next year. It is our
expectation that all parents of Grade 9 and 10
students will make every effort to attend the
appropriate meeting. Thank you for your
continued cooperation with us and we look
forward to seeing all of you on February 25 th !
Please see Mr Lewin’s section later in this
process.
Principal’s Last Word
By now you have hopefully read or heard about
Fr Fogarty’s new posting as President of the
Gregorian University Foundation beginning in
2014. As noted in the full announcement on our
website, “The President of the Gregorian
University Foundation oversees the fundraising
operations of the Consortium of three Jesuit
institutes of higher education in Rome: the
Pontifical Gregorian University, the Pontifical
Biblical Institute and the Pontifical Oriental
Institute. The recent 35 th General Congregation
(2008) declared that the interprovincial
institutions in Rome are among the five global
apostolic preferences of the Society of Jesus
requiring ‘special or privileged attention’ as ‘a
special mission received directly from the Holy
Father’.” Please go to the website to read the full
announcement.
Fr Fogarty, of course has been instrumental in
moving the school forward and in our own
Capital Campaign which has had two main
results: firstly, significant growth in our St Paul’s
Bursary Fund that allows the enrolment of
students whose families could not otherwise
afford to send them to the School, and secondly,
funding the building of the exciting new
Multiplex which we still hope will be completed
in time for the Closing Mass and Graduation
Convocation Exercises this year! The new
Multiplex building will address many of the
needs identified in the School Improvement
Strategic Plan and will be of benefit to current
and future students and also to alumni and friends
of the school. One of Fr Fogarty’s remaining
goals is to complete the Campaign and to fully
fund the new building before he goes. I can think
of no more fitting way to thank him for all his
efforts before he heads off to New York (where
the Gregorian Foundation Offices are) and Rome
for his new appointment than to help the School
and him reach the goal of fully funding the
building project by giving to the Campaign if you
have not done so yet, or by increasing your
donation to the School if you have already given!
Please remember that St Paul’s only moves
forward through the efforts of all members of the
community and that all community members
have a responsibility to contribute to the school’s
mission and development. It is the School’s hope
and expectation that all parents will give to the
Campaign. Please consider doing so before the
end of the year – perhaps even as a thank you to
Fr Fogarty for all he has done to advance the
School’s Mission. No gift is too small. Please
consider giving as much as you can to this
important project!
With sincere gratitude,
for course at the end of the school year. Any
University of Winnipeg applicant is required to
submit a special scholarship application form that
is available online or through his counsellor.
Students applying out of province were informed
by their counsellors to check the university
Generally, all out of province applications should
have been sent by students by this time of year.
these grade level assemblies, students will learn
about the course options available next year.
Students will bring an option sheet home with
course descriptions after the assembly.
Please spend quality time with your son
discussing the Option Forms to help them make
good choices. Students will be required to
Accommodations for Exams
Accommodations for exams come in a variety of
different forms dependent on the assessed needs
of the student. Following discussions with your
son’s counsellor, a review of the student’s history
as well as other professional evaluations
(medical, psychological, reading clinicians, etc)
in advance of writing any examinations, a
decision is made on whether accommodations
will be made for the student. Feel free to contact
your son’s counsellor if you have any questions.
Disappointing Term I Results?
These questions are a good starting point to
reflect back on first term work habits and effort.
Does your son do an average of at least 90
minutes of work (homework, review,
study cards, recopy notes, etc.) at home?
Does he use his student agenda, noting
important dates and crossing off
assignments that are completed? Have a
look at his agenda with him.
Did he take advantage of the extra hour of
help offered weekly by his teacher(s)?
That represents at least 12 hours of FREE
tutoring by your son’s best tutor.
Does he come prepared to class, take
notes, participate in discussions and ask
questions? Your son’s teacher can best
answer this question.
Does your son study in an environment
Does your son keep an organized binder
directed a very talented cast. The play was a total
success by any measure. The play was applauded
with standing ovations from the largest audiences
in recent history. This is a play that will be the
standard and will be remembered with
appreciation for many years to come.
The play follows the story of Randle P.
McMurphy, Drew Jensen (’13), as he gets himself
committed to a mental institution rather than
serve out the remaining months of his prison
sentence on a work farm.
The ward is run by the domineering Nurse
Ratched, Ainsley Beveridge (SMA ’13). She runs
the ward like a prison camp and demands that
things are to be run her way and even the doctors
are intimidated by her and follow her lead.
McMurphy disrupts Nurse Ratched’s orderly
ward to say the least. He introduces gambling for
money as well as the dangerous ideas of
independence and self-determination to the
patients. The patients, led by Dale Harding,
Adam Saunders (’13), come to understand they
are not as crazy as they were led to believe. One
by one they start to rebel against the iron will of
Nurse Ratched. Mr Cheswick, Aiden Prenovault
(’14), the manic Mr Scanlon, Morgan Paquette
(’14), the hallucinating Mr Martini, Shady Rizk
(’15) and even the brow beaten and repressed
Billy Bibbit, Josh Muloin (’16) start to demand to
be allowed to make their own decisions and to be
treated with respect. Finally, even Chief
Bromden, Dominik Mealy (’13), who has been
feigning chronic mutism for years is rehabilitated
and starts to speak again under the influence of
McMurphy.
The rebellion reaches its climax as the patients
unanimously demand to watch the world series.
Nurse Ratched refuses to change the schedule and
turns off the television. Refusing to accept this
arbitrary decision, McMurphy sits before the
blank screen and starts to watch the game even
with the set turned off. One by one all of the
patients join him in cheering on a game they can’t
even see. Despite her best efforts, Nurse Ratched
has lost control.
As a result of the rebellion, Nurse Ratched has
McMurphy and Chief Bromden “treated” with
electroshock therapy. When they return to the
ward McMurphy is still himself and is ready to
continue the battle of wills with Nurse Ratched.
Only then does he discover that the other patients
are voluntary and can leave when they choose but
he is committed which means he can’t leave until
he is released even if it goes beyond the end of
his original prison term. Faced with this,
McMurphy decides he must knuckle under and
follow the rules. Nurse Ratched presses her
advantage and suggests to the doctors that since
electroshock didn’t do a thing to McMurphy that
they need to consider the “surgical” option. In an
uncharacteristic show of independence, the
doctors disagree with Ratched and will only agree
to surgery if McMurphy has an uncontrollable
violent outburst.
McMurphy planned a clandestine party before the
rebellion and it still takes place. His “great
grandmother”, Candy Starr, Raven Rickner (SMA
‘14) and her friend, Sandy, Emily Meadows
(SMA ’13), sneak into the ward with liquor and
fun in mind. Candy takes the shy and
inexperienced Billy off for his first kiss to the
cheers of the other patients. The party is in full
swing when Nurse Ratched drops in. The party is
over. Billy is found alone with Candy and for the
first time in his life he stands up for himself. He
tells Nurse Ratched that he is not ashamed of
himself. Ratched uses Billy’s dysfunctional
relationship with his mother to make him back
down and submit to her will. Billy is led off in
tearful remorse, blaming McMurphy, to wait for
the doctor in his office. Moments later, Billy is
found dead, having cut his own throat. In the
shock and anger that follows among the patients
McMurphy attacks and tries to kill Nurse
Ratched.
The ward is very somber until McMurphy is
wheeled back into the ward on a gurney several
days later. The patients discover that he has had
the “surgical” option of a pre-frontal lobotomy.
They are stunned. The body may be alive, but
McMurphy is clearly gone. Chief Bromden
refuses to believe that McMurphy would ever
accept this so he smothers him with a pillow. The
play ends with Chief Bromden escaping and
going back to the real world, healed and healthy.
Mr Joel Adair, Mr Greg Matthew (’72) and Mr
Kevin Sterner and their stage crew designed and
built an impressive set. Ms Sandra Caron, and
Mrs Jonine Bergen costumed the actors in a
variety of clothing styles from pajamas to medical
uniforms. Even with the many quick costume
changes required the cast looked very authentic.
The makeup crew under the direction of Mrs
Linda Monasterski did a masterful job. The
music, played by Nelson Keep (’13) and Jesse
Scanlon (’13), added a lot of texture and drama to
the play.
The Dramatic Society has good reasons to be
proud of a very memorable production.
REFLECTIONS…
From the St Paul’s High School Prayer Circle
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
Words of inspiration to reflect on:
The Work of Christmas by Howard Thurman
When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and the princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among brothers,
To make music in the heart.
Another quote by Howard Thurman to share with
you: "...community cannot feed for long on itself;
it can only flourish where always the boundaries
are giving way to the coming of others from
beyond them -- unknown and undiscovered
brothers."
Our SPHS Prayer Circle is made up of parents,
students and friends of SPHS who pray during the
course of the day for your various needs. For
those who would like to join The Circle, as well
as those desiring to send new intentions, please
Encourage your teen to take
responsibility for learning
Becoming an
independent and
responsible learner takes
lots of practice. If you
want your teen to take
responsibility for his learning, then you have to
officially put him in charge of it.
This means you may need to take a step back and
give your teen more control over things such as
his homework. Tell your teen that he is in charge
of finishing his homework each night, and then
follow these six steps:
1. Establish a set homework time together.
Will your teen study right after school?
After dinner?
2. Keep your teen's schedule clear during
homework time. Don't interrupt his
homework and ask him to watch a
younger sibling or run a quick errand for
you.
3. Help your teen develop a system to keep
track of his homework. He can write his
assignments in a planner and use a
checklist to mark off completed items.
4. Offer support. Assure your teen that he
can do the work. Make sure that he knows
where to look for help. Encourage him to
ask the teacher for clarification, if needed.
5. Remind your teen only once that he has
homework. Part of taking responsibility
for his own work is remembering what he
has to do.
6. Leave your teen alone! Let him prove to
you that he can be responsible for
completing his work on time.
Healthy habits are vital to school
success
Even if homework is complete and she's out the
door on time, your teen isn't fully prepared for
school unless she has had the fuel she needs to
take on the day. To make sure your teen is ready
to learn:
Provide a diet that includes protein,
reduced fat dairy products, lean meats and
whole grains. These will help your teen
concentrate and think creatively at school.
Replace unhealthy snacks, like cookies
and chips, with healthy alternatives, such
as fruits and vegetables.
Eating meals as a family is also key. Families
who eat together are emotionally connected and
have better attitudes toward food.
Family meals can even boost your teen's
academic achievement. A recent study shows that
high school seniors who regularly eat meals with
their families score higher on academic
placement tests.
Five strategies can persuade teens to
read for pleasure
Does your teen think of reading as a school
chore? Encourage him to branch out and read for
pleasure by:
1. Making reading a social activity. Have
your teen read book- and author-related
blogs. Encourage him to join the online
discussion. He can also start a book club
with his friends based on a common
interest, such as sports or technology.
Check to see if your library has a book
club specifically aimed at teenagers.
2. Celebrating the "Rights of the Reader."
Author Daniel Pennac insists that readers
have inalienable rights: to read anything
they want, to skip pages, to reread
sections, and even to not finish a book.
Share these with your teen.
3. Checking out recommended lists. Get
suggestions for new books from your
teen's teacher, the local library or
published book reviews. Websites like
www.teenreads.com also offer book
suggestions.
4. Attending reading events. Bookstores
often host release parties or book signings
on the night that popular books come out.
Encourage your teen to gather a group of
friends to go and see what all the fuss is
about!
5. Reading together. Your teen is never too
old for you to read with him! Take turns
reading aloud, or read the same book and
have a discussion about it.
Some motivation efforts may have the
opposite effect
Some of the techniques parents rely on to
motivate their teens can actually have the
opposite effect. Here are some dos and don'ts to
keep in mind as you motivate your teen to do
homework or chores:
Create a solution with your teen rather
than imposing one on him. Teens are
more motivated to follow through on a
plan they helped create.
Be available to talk through problems,
without being responsible for solving
them.
Link your teen's personal goals to the task
at hand. Writing the paper for class will
strengthen his writing skills and may
make writing college application essays a
bit easier.
Don't nag. It doesn't work, and it ends up
annoying both you and your teen.
Don't bail your teen out constantly.
Sometimes, he has to face the
consequences of his actions--or inactions.
Don't lose your temper. Like nagging, it
won't work. It will just create distance
between your teen and you.
