the nelson tasman region has great cycling tracks for all riders along the ‘great taste trail’. phase one
from richmond - brightwater is open. richmond to rabbit island and brightwater to Wakefield open
december 2012. For more details of construction for each phase visit www.heartofbiking.org.nz.
For more adventurous riding, you can test your skills on the challenging dun mountain ride and other
tracks in the richmond ranges or for a leisurely ride, cycle along rocks road to tahunanui beach. there’s
loads of rides for families, the new rider, the old rider, the experienced rider and real hard-core rider.
Dun Mountain Trail 43kms - beginner /intermediate: Follow the route of new Zealand’s
first railway line (1862) as it winds through forest before crossing an alpine mineral belt. start at the
northern end of brook street. head onto a gravel road to your left, just before blick terrace. Follow
the track known as old codgers track until you reach tantragee saddle rd. Follow this a few hundred
metres and then take the gravel road on your right. When you come to a junction, go left over the stile
and ride away.
Maitai Valley beginner: start this track at the first car park along the maitai Valley as it makes its
way towards the maitai dam. the track is about 7kms with plenty of swimming holes and picnic areas
to stop and relax. if you would like to make it a little longer, you can continue to ride up towards the
maitai dam. there is a walkway to the top of the dam, toilets and picnic areas.
Rabbit Island Family: rabbit island is open from dawn till dusk and is a 20 minute drive from
nelson city. there is a multitude of tracks through forest for you to explore. a loop will take you around
45minutes.
Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park beginner/intermediate, advance: a track to please all
abilities. all tracks feed into each other so no matter what your level is you can all head out together and
catch back up along the way or at the end.
9
Tasman’s Great Taste Trail 175kms (not fully constructed yet): start at nelson i-site, or
richmond. this trail will offer panoramic coastal views over tasman bay and the Western ranges. riders
will pass over boardwalks along the edge of the Waimea estuary, home to a range of internationally
significant bird species, including the white heron. From here the trail crosses to beautiful rabbit island with
13 km of beach and pine forests, and where riders can take a ferry across to mapua Wharf to enjoy cottage
industry shops, cafes and restaurants. the route north-west from mapua leads to the town of motueka. the
southern trail section passes down quiet back roads along the motueka river’s west bank, emerging into
a landscape of sheltered valleys with vineyards surrounded by forest and glacial mountains. From there,
it will pass through dovedale and over to pigeon Valley road, through Wakefield, ending in richmond.
Heaphy Track 78.4km: a remote, multi-day,
ride that has no equal in new Zealand. the track starts
in golden bay and traverses to the West coast through
diverse landscape and vegetation. suitable for bikers
with a minimum of intermediate mountain biking
skills. the track varies from wide smooth flowing
trail to technical and rocky track with steep exposed
sections and frequent creek crossings. a good level
of biking fitness and experience is required. the
track can be ridden over any number of days with
most riders choosing to enjoy it over 2-4 days / 1-3
nights. stunning scenery and plentiful side-trips lend
themselves to keen photographers and riders with the
time to take it all in. Winter ride only.
entry for the track. this track is a ride of two halves.
the first is technically challenging through bush,
negotiating tree roots, rocks and river crossings. the
second half you can sit back and relax more. one-way
approx. 2 hours. organise transport.
National Parks
there are just 14 national parks in New Zealand, and Nelson
tasman is blessed with three of them – all within 90 minutes
of the city. Visiting a protected area is a special experience and
we welcome you to join us in taking special care of our natural
environment by taking away your rubbish, and supporting
tour operators and accommodation providers who operate
sustainably. Be sure to check weather conditions, take
appropriate clothing, and book Department of Conservation
huts and camping sites before you leave. You can do all of
these things at your local i-SItE or Visitor Information Centre.
Abel Tasman National Park
new Zealand’s smallest but most visited
national park. it combines lush native bush,
golden sands, turquoise waters, rugged
limestone cliffs and tidal lagoons – the abel
tasman seldom fails to enthrall. the abel
tasman coastal track, one of the department
of conservation’s “great Walks” offers easy to
moderate hiking, and the sheltered coastline
is popular for sea kayaking. it will take 3-5
days to walk or kayak the full length of
the park, with campsites, huts and lodge
accommodation available along the way.
access into the park is by hiking or water
taxi. if driving you will leave your vehicle at
kaiteriteri, totaranui or marahau. in summer
months you can depart direct from nelson
city with a 50 minute catamaran cruise.
tip: book accommodation in advance and
check times for tidal crossings.
Kahurangi National Park
kahurangi national park is the second largest
national park in new Zealand. some 570km
of incredible tramping tracks span 452,000ha
from golden bay in the north, south to
murchison and tapawera, and to the West
coast of the south island. kahurangi is the
home of the largest remaining population
of great spotted kiwi. another designated
department of conservation “great Walk “,
the heaphy track traverses from golden
bay to karamea, over craggy ranges, alpine
meadows, valleys of tropical native palms,
and ruggedly beautiful coastline. Winter
mountain-biking is also available on the
heaphy track. a helicopter will give you a
bird’s eye view of this incredible landscape
which includes sites filmed for the lord of the
rings and other middle earth areas.
tip: ensure you have organized transport to and
from start and finish points of the heaphy track.
Nelson Lakes National Park
nelson lakes national park is the
northernmost part of the southern alps and
south of nelson city. st arnaud is a quaint
alpine village and the gateway to the park
where a range of short and long walks are
available. there are remote mountain passes
to challenge the experienced solitude-seeker
and the park comprises impressive native
beech forests, valleys, glacial lakes and
craggy peaks. enjoy hiking this lake and river
filled alpine world, or take to the slopes in
the winter at rainbow ski area. one of
the best ways to see the beauty of this
magnificent landscape is by air in a glider or
by helicopter. nelson lakes is home to the
rotoiti nature recovery project, which aims
to revive populations of kiwi, other native
birds and lizards.
tip: take warm clothing and check weather
conditions regularly.
the caves, islands, and arches of Wharariki
beach, where seals breed, are among the
most dramatic in the country. behind are
constantly shifting dunes and a series of
lakes and swamps. the vegetation is
diverse, with some very rare plants.
Culture
& Heritage
As New Zealand’s second oldest city,
Nelson’s heritage is steeped in both Maori
and European influence. Over time,
personalities attracted by the innovative
and natural environment, have seen a
distinct regional culture develop that
inspires creative thought.
17
Maori culture
maori occupation goes back to the 14th
century. there are six indigenous iwi of te tau
ihu (nelson tasman): ngati tama, te atiawa,
ngati koata, ngati kuia, ngati toa and ngati
dutch explorer, abel Janszoon tasman’s 1642
voyage of discovery is the earliest known
contact between maori and europeans. a
the tragic meeting which resulted in the death
of four sailors and tasman’s departure from
the region now named after him.
european settlement of nelson occurred in
1842. evidence of the lifestyles these early
settlers lived can be found at broadgreen
historic house, isel house or Founders heritage
historic village of sarau – originally settled
by german immigrants. now named upper
moutere, this is a charming village with
historic buildings, surrounded by orchards
and vineyards.
golden bay and murchison were both
productive gold mining sites, a fact which
can be evidenced to visitors today.
Food, Wine
& Beer
A holiday isn’t a holiday without good
food, wine and brews, of which Nelson
Tasman has plenty. A mild Mediterranean
climate provides a fruitful bounty sure
to satisfy. Fresh seafood is plentiful.
Winemakers, bakers, brewers, cheesemakers
and chocolatiers ply their craft with
delicious results.
21
Dine al-fresco at outdoor events, in one of the
region’s many parks and reserves, or at one
of the many waterfront, city, and countryside
cafes and restaurants.
Tips for a Taste
of Paradise:
• Late summer rewards us with the region’s
rich harvest - apples, pears, nuts, berries and
olives can all be bought at roadside stalls or
local markets. of course hops and grapes are
also harvested at this time, and creatively
handcrafted into thirst-quenching beers
and crisp fine wines.
• The region has 26 boutique wineries. Grab
a wine trail map from i-sites and explore
the rural lanes and valley roads to discover
delectable delights.
• Nelson Tasman is the only region in NZ that
grows hops. We are the craft beer capital of
nZ - grab a nelson craft beer trail map to see
what’s on tap.
• Port Nelson’s busy fishing fleet and
shellfish stocks keep the region well
supplied with fresh seafood. look out for
seasonal specialities, from the day’s catch.
• Take the family to Mapua Wharf. Grab a
wharfside café lunch, buy freshly smoked fish,
visit the microbrewery and shout the kids an
ice-cream.
• Grab a picnic rug and tuck into fish and chips
on Wakefield Quay wharf or tahunanui beach
while you watch the sun slowly dip
under the mountains to the west.
• Visit a salmon farm in Golden Bay, where
you are guaranteed angling success. have
your catch smoked on site and enjoy it
picnic-style at the leafy riverside cafe
or take home to enjoy later.
• Stop at the gates of a berry farm to indulge
in berry-fruit ice cream or frozen yoghurt,
full of juicy sweet berries fresh from the vine.
• Join the locals as they enjoy their leisurely
weekly shop at the nelson saturday morning
market. as well as fresh locally grown
produce, look for locally made breads,
juices, pies, german sausages, sweets,
delicious distilled liqueurs and unimaginably
good peanut butter made from, well –
just peanuts!
Events
locally brewed craft beers and eclectic
entertainment are the focus of marchFest
(www.marchfest.co.nz).
Ruby Coast,
Moutere Hills, Motueka
Coastal and inland scenic highways
link Nelson city to the town of Motueka,
taking you through picturesque coastal
and rural landscapes. Mapua is a
popular destination on the coastal route,
with cafes, galleries, brewery and icecream
shop making this a great spot to
enjoy an afternoon.
41
This is the entrance to the Waimea
Estuary, where the huge tide dramatically
fills and drains the estuary and laps at
the doors of boutique accommodation.
The estuary attracts migratory birds
such as godwits, spoonbills, wrybills
and blue and white herons.
Further along the coast, impressive cliffs
plunge to the beach with distinctive ruby
red stones. at low tide look out for the
roadside “rock graffiti” as you approach
motueka, spelling out names and
messages on the sand flats.
the hinterland of moutere hills, the
historic village of upper moutere and
the motueka Valley highway make
a great country drive, with plenty of
opportunities to stop at art galleries,
wineries, roadside fruit stalls and gourmet
food producers, scattered throughout the
pristine landscape.
motueka is a town of 8,000, with a
colourful sunday outdoor market,
cinemas and cafes. as the closest town to
the abel tasman national park, motueka
is a great place to base yourself, and to
make the most of supermarkets, and high
street shopping with plenty of outdoor
clothing and equipment suppliers. the
motueka river is famed for its brown
trout, and river-side lodges.
Things to do
• Enjoy dinner from the fish and chip
shop at mapua Wharf. take them to eat
at the nearby brewery, and wash them
down with a locally brewed beer.
• Take in a round of golf at the 18-hole
motueka course, or the dramatic clifftop
9-hole course at kina beach.
• Visit New Zealand’s oldest pub!
• Take a scenic helicopter, fixed
wing or aerobatic flight from
motueka airport, or skydive with
Abel Tasman
Lush forests, sandy beaches and
turquoise lagoons vie for attention
along Abel Tasman’s crinkle-cut
coast, one of New Zealand’s top
kayaking locations. Escape to
New Zealand’s favourite Kiwi
holiday destination.
45
“I can’t believe Nelsonians get to wake up in
this amazing paradise every morning.”
Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf).
the abel tasman national park is new
Zealand’s only coastal national park –
and its golden sandy beaches and clear
turquoise water make it one of the most
popular. the sheltered bays are popular
for cruising, sailing and sea kayaking.
on land, the abel tasman coastal track
follows the coastline through lush native
bush, over limestone cliffs and along
golden sandy beaches. this is one of
the department of conservation’s “great
Walks”. the 53km track can be walked
in its entirety over three to five days.
smaller sections of the track can be easily
accessed by the network of water taxis
operating from kaiteriteri and marahau
in the southern end of the park, and
totaranui at the northern end.
the tonga island marine reserve prevents
fishing within a designated zone within
the park. it is here that the tonga island
new Zealand fur seals delight visitors as
they frolic and glide sleekly through the
clear water.
Tips for Visitors
St Arnaud
st arnaud is in the heart of the tasman
district’s winter playground and is the
gateway to the spectacular nelson lakes
national park. during the last ice age
massive glaciers gouged out troughs in the
mountainous head waters of the buller
river. today these enormous troughs are
filled by lake rotoiti and lake rotorua,
which give “nelson lakes national park”
it’s name.
the area is renowned for adventurous
and challenging hiking/walking, skiing
in winter, recreational swimming,
Things to do around Nelson Lakes
• Hike to the head of Lake Rotoiti and
stay at the hut overnight.
• Take a gourmet guided walk up Mt Robert
or freedom walk the area with some friends.
• Attend the New Zealand Antique and Classic
boatshow at lake rotoiti in march each year.
• Hire a kayak, or take a dip in Lake Rotoiti.
• Glide or fly in a helicopter over the
majestic mountains and landscape.
kayaking and fishing on the shores of
lakes and popular with birdwatchers. a
highlight in the park is the department
of conservations’ rotoiti nature recovery
project to help pave the way for the
recovery and re-introduction of native bird
species in the area.
st arnaud has a variety of quality bed
and breakfast accommodation, motels
and lodges. ensure you contact the local
department of conservation office before
heading out exploring.
• Fish for Brown Trout at Lake Rotoroa,
lake rotoiti or the buller river.
• Enjoy boating, sailing and lakeside
walks on or beside lake rotoiti.
• Ski or snowboard at Rainbow Ski Area,
just 27km from the village of st arnaud,
shuttle buses are available.
