Dine al-fresco at outdoor events, in one of the
region’s many parks and reserves, or at one
of the many waterfront, city, and countryside
cafes and restaurants.
Tips for a Taste
of Paradise:
• Late summer rewards us with the region’s
rich harvest - apples, pears, nuts, berries and
olives can all be bought at roadside stalls or
local markets. of course hops and grapes are
also harvested at this time, and creatively
handcrafted into thirst-quenching beers
and crisp fine wines.
• The region has 26 boutique wineries. Grab
a wine trail map from i-sites and explore
the rural lanes and valley roads to discover
delectable delights.
• Nelson Tasman is the only region in NZ that
grows hops. We are the craft beer capital of
nZ - grab a nelson craft beer trail map to see
what’s on tap.
• Port Nelson’s busy fishing fleet and
shellfish stocks keep the region well
supplied with fresh seafood. look out for
seasonal specialities, from the day’s catch.
• Take the family to Mapua Wharf. Grab a
wharfside café lunch, buy freshly smoked fish,
visit the microbrewery and shout the kids an
ice-cream.
• Grab a picnic rug and tuck into fish and chips
on Wakefield Quay wharf or tahunanui beach
while you watch the sun slowly dip
under the mountains to the west.
• Visit a salmon farm in Golden Bay, where
you are guaranteed angling success. have
your catch smoked on site and enjoy it
picnic-style at the leafy riverside cafe
or take home to enjoy later.
• Stop at the gates of a berry farm to indulge
in berry-fruit ice cream or frozen yoghurt,
full of juicy sweet berries fresh from the vine.
• Join the locals as they enjoy their leisurely
weekly shop at the nelson saturday morning
market. as well as fresh locally grown
produce, look for locally made breads,
juices, pies, german sausages, sweets,
delicious distilled liqueurs and unimaginably
good peanut butter made from, well –
just peanuts!
Events
locally brewed craft beers and eclectic
entertainment are the focus of marchFest
