St Arnaud
st arnaud is in the heart of the tasman
district’s winter playground and is the
gateway to the spectacular nelson lakes
national park. during the last ice age
massive glaciers gouged out troughs in the
mountainous head waters of the buller
river. today these enormous troughs are
filled by lake rotoiti and lake rotorua,
which give “nelson lakes national park”
it’s name.
the area is renowned for adventurous
and challenging hiking/walking, skiing
in winter, recreational swimming,
Things to do around Nelson Lakes
• Hike to the head of Lake Rotoiti and
stay at the hut overnight.
• Take a gourmet guided walk up Mt Robert
or freedom walk the area with some friends.
• Attend the New Zealand Antique and Classic
boatshow at lake rotoiti in march each year.
• Hire a kayak, or take a dip in Lake Rotoiti.
• Glide or fly in a helicopter over the
majestic mountains and landscape.

lakes and popular with birdwatchers. a
highlight in the park is the department
of conservations’ rotoiti nature recovery
project to help pave the way for the
recovery and re-introduction of native bird
species in the area.
st arnaud has a variety of quality bed
and breakfast accommodation, motels
and lodges. ensure you contact the local
department of conservation office before
heading out exploring.
• Fish for Brown Trout at Lake Rotoroa,
lake rotoiti or the buller river.
• Enjoy boating, sailing and lakeside
walks on or beside lake rotoiti.
• Ski or snowboard at Rainbow Ski Area,
just 27km from the village of st arnaud,
shuttle buses are available.
• Visit Teetotal Recreation Area and ice
skate when the pond is frozen. skates
can be hired at the local store.
