14 Outdoor Activities Nelson Tasman is an adventurer’s paradise, waiting to be discovered. Countless hiking and cycling trails wind through forested hills, plains, beaches and alpine valleys. Your efforts will be rewarded with panoramic views of both land and sea.
15 Famed for its temperate climate and high sunshine hours, Nelson Tasman can be explored year-round by land, sea and air. Water: • Sea kayaking the calm and sheltered coastline of the abel tasman national park is a quintessential nelson tasman experience. • Learn to sail in the beautifully benign waters of tasman bay, with majestic mountains in the background. • Feel the rush and power of white water as you raft or kayak through granite canyons in the buller gorge. • The Buller, Maruia, Motueka and Matakitaki rivers offer some of the best brown trout fly fishing in new Zealand. • Enjoy the safe sands of Tahunanui Beach and get your adrenalin pumping with kite-surfing. Land: • Cycle the Great Taste Trail out to brightwater and to rabbit island, kaiteriteri mountain bike park, heaphy track and the dun mountain. • Saddle up and take in remote and rugged landscapes on horse-back. cable bay just north of nelson, Farewell spit at the northern tip of the south island, and moutere hills, are all good locations for equine adventure. • Rev up the horse-power on a quad bike, following forestry trails to a magnificent summit with views over cable bay. • In the winter months, take the family to rainbow ski area - for gentle, forgiving slopes for all abilities - just 90 minutes from nelson city. • The region’s 9 golf-courses offer a good excuse to explore the region, from the kina cliff tops to the picturesque buller river • For rock climbers, Paynes Ford in Golden Bay is a mecca not to be missed. Sky: • Ride the Skywire and soar 1.6km across a valley of native bush at cable bay. • Skydive from Motueka Airport for the most spectacular skydiving with views over the abel tasman and kahurangi national parks. • Take a spectacular scenic flight for a bird’s eye view of nelson tasman by helicopter, fixed wing or microlight craft from nelson, motueka or takaka airports. Events: kaiteriteri beach adventure race, a multisport adventure race in march (www.kbar.co.nz); good Vibes skydive event in august (www.skydive.co.nz); bullerfest in march; nelson cycle Festival runs for a month in october with events for all ages (www.nelsoncyclefest.co.nz); 40/50 tour is a 350km 7-stage cycle tour for riders 40+ in december (www.4050tour.co.nz); rainbow rage in march is a 106km mountain bike adventure from st arnaud to hanmer springs (www.rainbowrage.co.nz) and in June join trail runners in escape From tane’s Forest trail run (www.nelsonevents.co.nz).
