Mapua is a popular destination on the coastal route, with cafes, galleries, brewery and icecream shop making this a great spot to enjoy an afternoon.
41 This is the entrance to the Waimea Estuary, where the huge tide dramatically fills and drains the estuary and laps at the doors of boutique accommodation. The estuary attracts migratory birds such as godwits, spoonbills, wrybills and blue and white herons. Further along the coast, impressive cliffs plunge to the beach with distinctive ruby red stones. at low tide look out for the roadside “rock graffiti” as you approach motueka, spelling out names and messages on the sand flats. the hinterland of moutere hills, the historic village of upper moutere and the motueka Valley highway make a great country drive, with plenty of opportunities to stop at art galleries, wineries, roadside fruit stalls and gourmet food producers, scattered throughout the pristine landscape. motueka is a town of 8,000, with a colourful sunday outdoor market, cinemas and cafes. as the closest town to the abel tasman national park, motueka is a great place to base yourself, and to make the most of supermarkets, and high street shopping with plenty of outdoor clothing and equipment suppliers. the motueka river is famed for its brown trout, and river-side lodges. Things to do • Enjoy dinner from the fish and chip shop at mapua Wharf. take them to eat at the nearby brewery, and wash them down with a locally brewed beer. • Take in a round of golf at the 18-hole motueka course, or the dramatic clifftop 9-hole course at kina beach. • Visit New Zealand’s oldest pub! • Take a scenic helicopter, fixed wing or aerobatic flight from motueka airport, or skydive with POPULAtION mapua 1,880 motueka 8,000 moutere and surrounds 4,000 Moving around Follow state highway 60 from richmond for 30 kms and then turn right at the signs indicating ‘ruby coast scenic drive’. this will take you to the villages of mapua, ruby bay, tasman and kina. For the village of upper moutere and the moutere hills, turn left onto the inland moutere highway at appleby or turn left just past the ruby coast turn off at gardiners Valley.
