The Great Outdoors<br />

the nelson tasman region is blessed with<br />

being an outdoor enthusiast’s delight. a<br />

myriad of outdoor activities throughout the<br />

year provide visitors with opportunities to<br />

play, stay and enjoy what our wonderful<br />

national parks and environment has to offer.<br />

hiking in the kahurangi national park or nelson lakes<br />

national park will bring you into contact with a world<br />

that few experience. some of the oldest karst rocks and<br />

landscape exist and you’ll come away in awe of the<br />

first pioneers that discovered and transversed the land.<br />

good cardio fitness is required for you to truly enjoy this<br />

remarkable landscape. check you have transport options<br />

organised in advance.<br />

the nelson tasman region is one of the best fly fishing<br />

destinations in the world. We don’t say this, the best fly<br />

fisherman in the world say this. the reason being, there<br />

are so many lakes, rivers and streams in the area that<br />

there is always a spot where the fish are biting. and, the<br />

water is so clear that you can see the fish coming to help<br />

with the catch.<br />

nelson tasman is the cycling centre of new Zealand.<br />

We have great tracks for adrenalin junkies, wonderful<br />

beginner-intermediate tracks and easy family fun trails<br />

for everyone. see page 8 and 9 for more details. you can<br />

either arrive in the region with your own bike or you can<br />

hire on arrival in the city.<br />

dive your heart away over new Zealand’s only coastal<br />

national park, the abel tasman national park. depart<br />

from motueka and climb 16,500ft and be prepared for<br />

some of the most amazing views over the kahurangi<br />

national park and abel tasman national park. the air will<br />

be warmer than most other skydive locations in new<br />

Zealand. a truly amazing experience!<br />

nature lovers have many choices in the region to<br />

explore. choose any of the national parks or golden<br />

bay and collingwood. the main attraction is Farewell<br />

spit, a nature reserve, bird sanctuary and wetland of<br />

international importance. the spit is around 35km long<br />

and public access is restricted to the first 4km. don’t<br />

forget to visit new Zealand’s most beautiful beach,<br />

Wharariki beach. horse-ride, walk or just relax in an<br />

amazing picturesque setting. take a picnic lunch too.
