"I'm an old woman, my
dear, I know my sex."
from the movie. "The Women"
Throughout
history,
purpose
Mt. Vernon's
she has kno>vn the
of her existence
and hov/ to achieve it.
Times have changed, and
although Mt. Vernon is old,
she is young in heart and
spirit.
On the Occasion of
Mount Vernon's
Centennial, 1975
A centennial.
Like one who conquers all,
Succeeds
By consummating each year
One hundred times over
And conceives, therewithal,
A celebration
Of life and self most dear.
A Century, therefore, is not
By dreams alone
Breeched into a second birth;
Rather
It is fashioned by
Schemes
Into a fecund ^irth.
The result of countless
Les affaires de coeur
That elevate all expectations
In parentheses
D'amour.
one hundred bittersweet
A centennial, thus, like two lovers joined,
Is sweetly-hyphenated
And
Prolonged.
