RECONCILIATION AS PROCESS AND PRACTICE
Reconciliation involves the (re)building of peaceful relations between individuals, groups
and between people and institutions, including the state. As many conflicts recur within a
decade, inclusive reconciliation processes are necessary to prevent resurgence of violence
and deepening of the peace.
The course aims to develop capacities among participants to support the building of peaceful
relations in fragmented societies. Reconciliation will be explored as a political, social and
psychological process, where aspects of justice, acknowledgement, economic aspects, trauma
treatment and gender are central. Practical examples from reconciliation processes will be
provided in order to better understand the multifaceted concept of reconciliation.
COURSE ON DISARMAMENT, DEMOBILISATION
AND REINTEGRATION
The process of disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration
(DDR) is an output of conflict resolution and a facilitator of peace
building. DDR involves the standing down of parties to the conflict
and the reintegration of ex-combatants into civilian life. It seeks to
address the post-conflict security challenge that arises from ex-combatants
being left without livelihoods or support networks during
this critical transition period. The aim of this senior/middle management
course is to give the participants a comprehensive view on
DDR. The course will combine practical experiences from different
DDR programmes with theoretical views on the subject. The course
is based on the UN Integrated DDR Standards (IDDRS).

Rule of Law (RoL) is an essential foundation for peace, security and
development. Most peace and state-building missions today have
RoL mandates and many international, regional and national actors
are engaged in RoL promotion. RoL is also interlinked with other
reform topics, such as public administration reform and Security
Sector Reform (SSR). This course provides participants with specific
knowledge of the most essential norms, standards, mechanisms and
methods. The course also looks at the central actors and missions,
their mandates and experiences and views on future challenges. It is
organised in cooperation with the German Centre for Peace Operations
(ZiF). The course turns to participants who are working with
RoL and who are already in a RoL-component within a mission or
have the ambition of working in such in the future.
