THE OUTCOME OF THE
AA1000 DIALOGUE-
BASED PROCESS
G1. EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS CONTINUED
36
• Tackle the issue of HIV/AIDS orphans
in partnership with local NGO's
• Alleviate poverty through support of
economic programmes
• Support agricultural graduates who
have been resettled on farms
• Fund small-scale agriculture as per
the Brazilian model. The current
marketing system does not allow
organisations such as BAT
Operations to adopt the Brazilian
type of contract growing scheme
F. THE ENVIRONMENT
Stakeholder expectation summary
On the environment, issues raised
related to agricultural practice including
water, energy use, product life cycle
and sustainability.
Our view
BAT Operations are committed to the
principles of sustainable development
and to achieving world-class standards.
Our environmental approach stems
from the recognition that almost
everything we handle – tobacco, paper
and board – is grown in the natural
environment. The company supports
initiatives such as the Agronomy Best
Practice Guidelines and the conservation
of biological diversity.
What we are able to deliver now
• Continue to support ethical crop
production and good agricultural
practices
• Promote efforts to reduce pollution
• Perpetuate environmental initiatives
involved with energy, product life
cycle, sustainable ecosystems
Performance Indicators
Good agricultural practices and ethical
crop production
• Expand the adoption BAT social
responsibility in tobacco growing
guidelines and road maps to other
grower bodies
Water usage
• Continue to measure actual versus
targets using GRIs and EH&S
initiatives. For more information on
2001-2003 GRIs please refer to
Appendix 2
The environment
• Produce EH&S report twice a year
• Maintain the ISO14001 standards
within Leaf Operations
• Promote BAT Biodiversity
Partnerships
What we are not able to deliver
now
None
G. INTERNAL POLICIES REFORM
Stakeholder expectation summary
Stakeholders felt that the company
should review its board composition
and widen its mission statement beyond
"smokers".
Our view
Stakeholders' expectations on policy
changes require wider consultation and
approvals at various levels and therefore
cannot be done as quickly as stakeholders
would like.
What we are able to deliver now
and performance indicators
• Balanced board – this deliverable
