Not Like Thee Dr. Fell
written by Bernard Farrell.
A group of people gather in
a sealed room for an
Encounter Session under the
direction of an American
therapist. One of the group,
a young man, displays
increasingly disturbing
behaviour. The others act
and react around this
central figure in a defensive
and ruthless manner, which is
hilarious and gripping at the
same time.
This 1952 film was based on
a short story by North Kerry
author Maurice Walsh. It
was read by Director John
Ford and he secured the
film rights soon after.
The technicolour romantic
comedy-drama starred
John Wayne, Maureen
O’Hara and Barry
Fitzgerald. The film is
notable for its lush
photography of the Irish
countryside and the long,
climactic, semi-comic fist
fight between Wayne and
McLaglen. The film won two
Oscars and concludes our
celebration of this groundbreaking
short story.
DOROTHY PARKER
MADE ME A FEMINIST
The Seanchaí Centre
9pm - 10pm
€10 / €8
The journalist and writer,
Mary Kenny remembers the
teenage inspiration she
derived from the witty,
sassy and provocative
verse of the wisecracking
New Yorker Dorothy Parker
and the subversive effect it
had on her as a schoolgirl
in 1950’s Dublin. The life
and the verse plus the
impact of a great feminine
wit are recalled in Mary
Kenny’s own inimitable
style.
