THE TAILOR AND ANSTY
St John’s Theatre & Arts
Centre
8.30pm - 10.30pm
€15 / €12
This play is written by Eric
Cross, performed by Ronan
Wilmot and Ena May.
When first published in 1942,
The Tailor and Ansty was
banned because of its
bawdiness by the
Censorship Board after
three days of heated
debate in The Seanad. It
tells the story of an
innocent charming couple
who lived in their small
cottage on one acre with
one cow. Enjoy this unique
true story of rural life.
A SONG FOR MARION
The Classic Cinema
8.30pm - 10.30pm
€7
A London-set comedic
drama about grumpy
pensioner Arthur, who
honours his beloved wife's
passion for performing by
joining the unconventional
local choir to which she
used to belong. This
process helps him build
bridges with his estranged
son, James. A simple film
that doesn't pretend to be
something it isn't and stars
Terence Stamp, Vanessa
Redgrave and Gemma
Arterton.
Performance:
SACRED HARP
SHAPE NOTE SINGERS
St Mary’s Church
9pm - 10.30pm
Free of charge
Experience a magical
evening of ‘shape-note
singing’ in St Mary’s Church.
This four-part a cappella
American traditional music
dates from the 16th century
and is characterised by
haunting harmonies,
traditional modes, raucous
songs, serene hymns, fast
fugues and high-energy
anthems. The tradition is
democratic and egalitarian
and the singers have no
affiliation with any
organisation - religious or
otherwise. The notation is
written in shapes that
correspond to degrees of
the scale, making it easy to
sight-sing, and visitors are
encouraged to join in. This
music wasn’t conceived to
be performed. The best
way to experience it is to
just dive in and try it. ‘We
sing together simply
because we love to sing
together.’
