preparing some other works.1 They were never finished or published but kept the problem alive. In the summer of 1881 it, however, was work on the second edition of Om dödsstraffet that probably would keep him from going to the Nordic meeting of lawyers in Copenhagen.2 In a letter, probably from 1886, Olivecrona claimed that half of the work was done. 3 The summer of 1887 was to be spent on the work.4 His claim in 1891 that the work had been going on for two years might be understood in the light of that the last two years had been a period were much information had been gathered from many countries.5 The second Swedish edition of Om dödsstraffet was distributed by Olivecrona starting around Christmas 1891. 6 The situation, especially in parliament, was now quite different. No motion to abolish the penalty of death had been delivered since 1872 and none would be until 1893. The penalty of death had not been an issue at all since 1876.7 In this situation we might find the reason for the changed dedication of the second edition. ägnas denna skrift vördsamt av författaren.”1 When neither parliament nor king seemed to be inclined to do something about abolition the judges still had the possibility not to sentence anybody to die. Contacts and network – and two travellers In many aspects, and not least as abolitionist, Olivecrona was an internationalist. He travelled, when possible, he was involved in international associations and congresses, and his huge correspondence bear witness to his many contacts. Letters asking for information about legal questions of Sweden tended to be forwarded to him. The yearning of the young professor for international experience and erudition was evident, and so was his primary interest in France and Germany and their neighbouring countries. Olivecrona was granted government support and permits for study trips in the summers of 1853, 1855, and 1857, although the planned trip of 1853 was not realised. The journey of 1855 went to Denmark, Germany, Belgium, France, and Switzerland, and the journey of 1857 to Germany, France, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.2 On the journey of 1857 the newlywed Olivecronas were accompanied by Sophie Leijonhufvud and in the summer of 1861 they travelled to Germany, France, England, Ireland, and Scotland.3 In the summer of 1868 the Olivecronas visited Belgium, England, France and Switzerland.4 The journey through Belgium to England became a tour of the leading Belgian abolitionist, starting in Liège with Guillaume Nypels, continuing to Jean-Joseph Thonissen in Leuven, then to Brussels and Edouard Ducpétiaux and Auguste Visschers, and finally visiting Jacques-Joseph Haus in 1 Olivecrona 1891a 2 the dedication.
