Sports journalist Tony Smith has written a book covering
Ryan Nelsen and his All Whites.
The All Whites soccer team did what no other New
Zealand sporting team managed in 2009: they stopped a
nation dead and created one of the greatest moments of
sporting theatre ever witnessed.
Never mind that they were playing
Bahrain; never mind that neither New
Zealand nor Bahrain were ranked inside FIFA’s top 60
footballing nations. This was the all or nothing, ‘One Shot
For Glory’ game that would catapult the winner onto
soccer’s greatest stage - the World Cup.
Rarely do games like this live up to their billing,
but Ryan Nelsen’s All Whites’ heroic 1-0 victory in
Wellington to secure the home-and-away tie actually
exceeded expectations.
Now, the All Whites have South Africa 2010 to
look forward to and their immensely talented captain
Ryan Nelsen has agreed to plot the path to that wonderful
tournament.
‘Nelly’ shares his views on all the players, the opposition they will face and talks
about his boyhood dream to pull on the All Whites shirt. Printed by Hodder Moa,
ref no. ISBN-13 9781869712020 - going rate about $40.
On a lesser scale, the debate continues whether this Match
Programme will continue in differing formats. At present a ‘pro’ paper vote will
see the printed version continue, and a balance is being sought tween email and
print version.
Worth considering that the email versions can be archived on computer -
just bung them in a Folder and you will end up with a pretty complete record of
Otago fitba. I may even produce a DVD including previous years that will go on
sale at the end of the season. If you are interested, let me know....
Apologies to all goalkeepers who took the hump at my guess that they
struggle to read words and need pics in books. Its just that They and
Centrebacks, all move their lips when they read, and
thats a bit of a giveaway No ?
The 1sts played Roslyn Wakari at the Caledonian. Playing into the strong wind in the
first half the team seemed intent on giving the opposition a goal with some poor
distribution and silly free kicks given away around the box. Both teams played a similar
formation and chances were few and far between, with Roslyn having the better of the
half having a goal disallowed for offside. The best chance of the half fell to Dom who
saw his shot go across the face of the goal and wide.
A tactical change in the system of play at half time and a few choice words
resulted in the home side starting to take control and play more structured football. A
through ball from Campbell for the ever energetic Luke to chase saw Luke head it over
the advancing away keeper into the empty net for his first. The goal gave the home side
confidence and Luke scored his second direct from a corner. Roslyn started to chase
the game and Josh Bell made a fine save low to his left to keep his clean sheet. A
counter attack from a Roslyn corner saw a measured through ball from Steve B through
to Luke who outpaced his marker and coolly slotted past the keeper for his hat trick.
Aussie limped off with a pulled muscle but the reorganisation of the defence
worked well. The question of who was taking a free kick was settled by Steve B and
Luke by paper scissors rock! That was the first time I’d seen it done at senior level! With
Roslyn continuing to search for a goal Yanik picked the ball up on the half way line beat
the last defender and took the ball around the keeper to score. Final score 4-0. Uni
coach Luiz Uehara was extremely pleased with the
result but cautioned the players that there is still a
long way to go. Mentions for Todd Harwick, Steve
B, Yanik Wouts and Josh Bell. man of the match
Luke for his hard work and the rewarding hat trick.
2nds beat Mornington 7-0. No match report but
Ben scored one apparently. Sort it out boys
3rds played away to Roslyn Black. The boys
outplayed roslyn for all of the first half with roslyn
having very few chances on goal. We were 2-0 up
at the half thanks to well taken goals from Will
Smith and Tarrant Jnr. In typical Varsity fashion
though the boys made it hard for themselves, we
allowed them back into the ...game with a few ugly
goals which could be put down to a combination of
bad defending, bad reffing and bad judgement.
We found ourselves locked up at 3-3 after both
teams each got another, until supersub matt came
on to Pick seal up the Match game with Progs 2 quick at goals. Callum
also netted Aarons with shoe a good shop, strike. Final Score was 6-
3. Well Lower done Meridian to the boys centre for keeping on on fighting
when it was Thursdays locked up at 3-3. Showed good
character and fighting spirit. MOTM was: Will

4ths played D Tech at Logan. They failed to take
advantage of possession in the first half and
couldn’t capitalise chances into goals. 0 - 0 at
half time, we let through 4 cheap second half
goals fighting into the wind and couldn’t find the
back of the net all day. 4 - 0 down, Hamish was
MOTM.
The girls took on Roslyn Wakari at Ellis Park.
Matching their system of play and man marking
their most creative player worked well as against
the run of play Uni took the lead. Roslyn came
back and scored a strange equaliser which
should have been cleared.
The girls showed their character by going up
the other end and taking the lead for a second
time. A well worked equaliser from Roslyn saw
the half time score 2-2.
An unfortunate accident saw Jordan Walker carried off to hospital in an
ambulance hopefully with nothing too serious. The resultant delay allowed the home side
to re-organise and they scored 4 unanswered goals. Despite the score it was a fine
battling effort from the girls and they should be proud of their efforts.
The Seconds
played
Northern.
With plenty of late call offs, we managed
to scrape together a side with the
resources we have. Went behind early
with a stunning strike, we tried to steady
the ship and play some neat passing
football, which we achieved in patches.
Lost another goal and went in at half-time
2-0 down. Came out the second half with
a point to prove, Ryan Atherton took the
game in hand and in a devastating 5
minutes spell ripped Northern apart
scoring a wonder goal and setting up
attack after attack. We then went 3-2
ahead. Northern then got their heads up
and with some slack defending and some
lapse goal keeping managed to get back
in front and settle the game 4-3. Full
credit to Green Island we were unlucky.
POD has to be Atherton his class stood
out. Natural talent. Eric Stephenson.
After plenty of positives from the first
game of the season , the 3rds were away
The Green Island Premier side played a Grants
Braes side that had everything to play for and
deserved everything they got. They were prepared to
hold the ball when they had it and put us under
pressure when we had it. All the goals were not that
flash but once they hit the net who cares, so to
Grants Braes well done. For us at Green Island we
have to work harder to do what we are asked as the
next couple of weeks we are up against the big boys.
But not all doom and gloom we just need to be going
forward. Players who played well were gunner, Cody
and Rutts. Cheers Flem.

to Northern this week. Unfortunately after ten minutes it became obvious that we
were going to have a hard day of it , with a penalty awarded against us and an
offside goal. Three nil at half-time and it shows the make-up of the team that they
came back out with their heads up. Some better football in the second half made
for some attractive moments and our best chances. Unfortunately no
improvement on the score in the second half and we took our 2nd defeat of the
season. Considering this is only the second time most of these guys have played
together, there is a lot of potential that should be realised in a few weeks. A big
mention to all the players that were called in at the last minute especially Paul
Hendrick, who played 60 minutes with a torn Achilles tendon. Rory Crow
The Fourth Division played Northern. Beach Soccer is normally played in the
summer but not according to Footballsouth. Plenty of sand but no water at
Forrester Park. Its an injury waiting to happen. The result was a scrappy game
which neither side should be happy with but a 3-1 win to Northern. Probably
deserved on effort but not for football. MOM: Cookie in the middle of the Park,
nice passes not much running.
The Oldies Gold played the Green. It was even for the first 15 minutes then the
Golds put three away. It
was a good tussle from
then on with a few more
goals scored including
Mannie letting in a penalty
for the Greens to score.
Woodsy got a hat trick
and was instantly subbed.
Can’t be scoring more
goals than Dave.
The Women’s Green
team drew 4-4 with
Grants Braes Arana. The
game was played at a fast
pace by both teams. After
initially conceding the first
goal the girls played with
a lot of heart to break
even. With a number of
new players within the
team we look forward to
our next game. Maryanne
Anderson played well at
right back to be Player of
the Day.
In the early Fletcher Cup game, playing into the wind Grants Braes took the lead with
William Simpson using his electrifying pace to score his first goal for the club. Mosgiel
then consolidated with two well taken goals for a 2-1 scoreline. Rory McDonald levelled
the scores early in the second half and when Mosgiel were reduced to 10 men a Braes
victory seemed likely. Both teams had chances that could have given them the win but in
the end a 2 - 2 scoreline was a fair reflection.
In the main game Grants
Braes were looking to turn
around the disappointment of
two early losses in hosting
Green Island who sat three
points above them on the table.
Playing with the wind in the first
half Braes were hoping to take
advantage and put pressure on
the Green Island back line. A
corner won after a shot at goal
by captain Marcus Mineba right
from the kick off set the scene
as Braes looked to pile on early
pressure.
After the early but un-rewarded domination against Queenstown last week this
was a Braes side determined to take its chances and when Ash (the Hoff) Hodges
knocked home the first goal the confidence and momentum was obvious.
A second goal by Peter Alcock gave the boys a buffer but for the next 20
minutes no further opportunities could be capitalised upon as Tiwai Wilson, Shannon
Cox & Terry Saunders all went close to getting on the score sheet.
Braes started the second half assertively despite the elements and were
unlucky not to receive a chance of a third goal as vigorous calls for a penalty failed to be
seen or heard. It wasn’t long though and the third goal came as Kieran (Cristiano) Putt
weaved his magic and slotted home. A second goal for Ash Hodges completed the
scoring although the opportunities continued to be created right up to the final whistle.
The 4 - 0 victory represented a very pleasing result for the lads whom had shown a real
grit & determination and will give them some much needed confidence ahead of their
next clash against Dunedin Tech.

NZ Senior Coaching Certificate
LEVEL 3 Senior Coaching Certificate, NZ $1200, Apply to Football South
MODULE 1: Understanding and applying the principles of effective team play.
MODULE 2: advanced strategies and tactics
MODULE 3: Developing a system of play
MODULE 4: Match analysis
MODULE 5: Developing a coaching process. Entrants, 19+ Years
This course is specifcally targeting coaches working with players in competitive
senior coaching environments and is a must for those with a passion for exploring
modern trends in football coaching.
This 12 day non-residential course focuses on preparing coaches to effectively meet
the needs of senior players at the competitive/elite end of the coaching spectrum.
During this time coaches will be exposed to a range of content from exploring
modern trends in football, to using
effective coaching tools to bring tactical
ideas alive on the training field. The
course is of three parts, consisting of
three, four day workshops spread over a
12 month period. Each workshop presents
coaches with an exciting exploration into
elite football coaching and preparing
candidates for the competency based
practical coaching
assessment conducted at the conclusion
of the course.
For the Braes, Peter Alcock was outstanding effectively closing down the
dangerous Cody Robinson as well as linking fantastically with his wide men. Marcus
Mineba likewise ensured domination of the midfield and all Braes supporters will be
hoping the leg injury that they saw him limp from the field with is nothing more than a
niggle. Tiwai (Rio) Wilson continues to impress in the central defence and Matt Ward’s
first start of the season produced a number of positives although I am not sure he
found things too comfortable after some mis-placed percutane.
Man of the match on the day for the Braes was Ben Eder whom was the rock
at the heart of the Braes defence winning anything and everything that came near him
and I am sure would have impressed all in attendance.
This was a much needed confidence boost for the boys and I am sure will add
some real spark to training this week as we next line up the local Goliath in a clash at
the Caledonian.
The Whole of Football Plan (WOFP) has been
on the drawing board for well over a year now,
aimed at taking the Game in NZ forward over the
next ten years and beyond. The goal of the WOFP is to grow the sport of football in New
Zealand by offering participants a consistent high quality experience at all levls of the
game. It covers the game from grassroots to elite levels, with pathways for everyone. It
is an integrated approach to player, coach and general game development. It is
designed to meet the aims of the NZF Strategic Plan :-
· Alignment - giving a consistent, quality delivery of player, coach and game
develooppment the length and breadth of the country
· Growth - growing the game both from a quantity and quality point of view
· World Class - developing world class players, coaches, referees and
administrators
We have already had aspects of the plan introduced with the revamped free
Small Whites coaching programme, the Females in Football week and the start of the
National Talent Centres.
NZ Football hopes to gain the financial support of SPARC for the delivery of the
Plan. SPARC have been impressed by the turnaround that NZF has been able to
achieve in its organisational and financial capability over the past two years.
John Herdman and his team have put in a tremendous amount of time and
energy into producing this whole of football initiative. John is in Dunedin this week,
talking to the Footballsouth Board and District representatives so that they have a better
The Northern Prems travelled to Invercargill to meet Spirit and play the first ever
SPL match on the new artificial turf.
Northern started as if they hadn’t even gotten off the bus and were a goal
down after 15 minutes, but fought back strongly over the remainder of the half to
gain the ascendency.
Attacks beginning from the midfield put Spirit under pressure and Brando
took two opportunities to put Northern up 2-1. Spirit came back right after half
time to level the scores but this was Northerns match, dominating territory and
possession and reducing spirit to counter attacks.
A third goal was added by Mario Ray and the final nail in the coffin
scored by Brando after a pinpoint cross from Simon Collins. Both Wilkinson
brothers had solid games and Cam McPhail was tidy at the back. MOM awarded
to Sean Brando for his 3 goals.
In other matches Northern 2nds won 4-3
against a resilient Green Island side at The
Gardens. The 3A’s beat GI 3 nil , the 3B’s
beat Tech 3 nil and the 4 th ’s beat GI 3-1.
The Northern Premier Women’s team
faced a tough challenge against a solid Tech
A team at Culling. The first 15 minutes was a
little disjointed and Mikaela Garland was able
to put away a one on one chance to put
Northern 1 nil up. Northern began to play with
more attacking flare but often lacked
accuracy with some of their passing but
eventually the possession told and Carena
Oosterbaan score just before half time.
After the break Northern began to pick
up the pace and some slick passing saw
them finish Tech off 4 nil at the final whistle.
Solid performances from Carena and
Rebecca Brown and a MOM performance
from Molly at centre back and left midfield. In
other matches Northern White beat an
expectant Roslyn Black team 5 nil and the
Gold team lost 6 nil to a strong Green Island
team at Sunnyvale.
Trifecta for Refs Chris Boyd
Footballsouth has scored a trifecta with three referees selected and
invited to attend a national referee development academy in August.
Jack Cowie (20) is in his second year of study at Otago University
majoring in Physics, Edward Cook (25) is in his first year of study at
Otago University in Health Sciences, and Phillip Bulling (42) is from
Invercargill where he is a sales representative with Coca Cola.
All three are currently active in the Footballsouth Premier
League as referees and assistant referees, and New Zealand Football
has identified them as individuals who have shown skills and talent as
a referee, drive and enthusaism, and the potential to succeed.
Jack Cowie will be joined in Napier by his twin brother Mike
who is the only invitee from Mainland and was seen in the middle in
the Premier League in Dunedin last weekend officiating in the game University v
Roslyn-Wakari. Jack was in action over the summer as referee for the National Youth
League, while Edward transferred from Wellington at the start of 2010, and Phillip has
beavered away in Southland as the driving force behind recruitment and coaching.
The stage 2 development academy is run in conjunction with the national
secondary school boys tournament held in Napier from 28th August to 3rd September.
There is a maximum of 14 referees from around the country who are invited to attend,
and Footballsouth has three referees along with North Harbour and Hamilton, and there
is a waiting list of prospective referees so it is a real honour to have so many selected
from the south. Congratulations to all three.
New Zealand Football has a development pathway for referees.. After Stage
Two the next steps are the National Youth and National Women’s Leagues and
ultimately the NZFC and beyond.
Footballsouth is fortunate that both Jack and Phillip have passed the
examinations for Level 2 certification and upon completing the required field tests and
the development academy can be expected to step up as
regulars in the Premier League along with Edward.
Caversham played a very entertaining
queenstown team at tonga park and
came away with a 4-0 victory.
This was a new looking caversham
team with three players anton ross, simon
ward and jessie free making there ist
team debuts and this plus the conditions
tended to hamper our first half
perfomence with the team not quite
jelling, but after a few calming words from
the coach at half-time the team came out
and played better structured football and
slowly wore queenston down.
A hattrick to robbie deeley and a “rare”
goal to blair duncan sealed a hard fought
win against a team who will cause other
teams a lot of trouble.
The only down side was a broken nose
to mike smith which could see him miss a
few games.
We still haven’t been able to field our
preferred starting line up yet due to
various reasons but overall the coaching
staff are happy with the perfomances of
those who have been playing and the
returning players will only make us
stronger.
With 2 wins from 2 games, 3 goals and 3
points from each, our 2nd home game
had sage Sal reaching for the numerology
cards seeking out club members whos
birthday reflected the Fungu Shu type
start to our season- unfortunately it only
popped out Al Brooks from 1933 and his
Dad Clive from 1822.
Mike went the other way and has
got a young side revved up- with Luke
coming in from up North with some very
silky skills on the ball and Clives
grandson Matt making the smooth
transition to senior stuff. Playing table
toppingTech was a test and although it
was lost 1-0 the guys played some very
good footie playing into a searing 2nd half
wind . Another new face and new guy -
Guy ( also from up North) blending in
seamlessly with the established young
un’s Morgan & Reggie our midfield
competed magestically with the maestros
from Tech. With Phil awol and Dano only
lasting till h/t our front line was led by 2
young guys whose combined age still
didnt match that of the ageless Phil in
Gary GBH and another new young un in
Tim ( ex Tech) we came close but couldnt quite put one in to topple Tech
The 2nds played at Ocean Grove normally the site of sea, sand, samba and ....
but saturday saw another S added to the list in shit, dog doo literally on the pitch had our
lads reeling. Off to a good start with Matt Woodhead scoring his 2nd in 2 games and
then a overhaed kick cannoned off the cross bar saww MIke tap in th rebound for a
deserved 2-0 lead.Braes were fortunate to have our Tom Kent carded and off and still
with 30 monutes to play, they came back into the game , and with tiem almost up( in a
deja vu replay of last weeks hearth break loss to Northern ( the bagged 2 in the last
5minutes) Braes scored a very late equaliser- with time up Matt rounded the keeper but
couldn’t quite find the net, so 2 games and only 1 point, but plenty of positives for the
season ahead ( if only the games could end after 85mins- we’d be top o the league -aint
that right Arsne)
Brian has the 3rds knitted into a cohesive unit with only Perky still enjoying
the joys of Matuara on a friday nite with a few ciders his only concern, a super tough
draw saw us playing the champs (northern) and then the runner s up ( melchester) from

www.soccerotago.co.nz
last year in successive games,
both were comprehensibly won,
Nick Cape beng so far the clubs
top scorer with 3 from 2 games.
2-0 up after only 10 minutes in
both games. Pete & Nick
running fine upfront with a goal
piece, With old campainger
Forbsie back from a year off
with Melchester running the
midfield, Young Brad in goals
having shorn his arfo,his
balance is much improvedshowing
good steady hands and a calming influence in front of his defence who make
the recent icelandic volcano look like a minor dust storm.
Melchester couldn’t compete with the pace and incicviness and Capey bagged
a 3rd early in the 2nd stanza. Melchester grabbed a consolation to make final score 3-1
Oldies won 2- 0 also against Melchester. Last week having 17 players this
week down to 12- we called upon Young Bob to go in goals, and luckily old Bob turned
up to ref, as the team with the bye didnt show. Chris & Mike came close in the first half,
2nd half turned with the wind and Toch chimed in with a delicate chip to put us ahead
and scored again late on, follwing a great delivered corner from Stevie Day- Shayne rose
like the proverbial Phoneix to smash his header off the cross bar and Toch was on the
spot to seal the points
Women went to Culling looking for revenge following the Prems defeat yesterday, A good
start saw young Charley put us ahead, only
for a handball in the box to give tech a pen
and all square at the break, Possibly missing
Niki’s presence with her pregnancy, we called
up on Mrs Abbott to step in; fear not Sunday
ref’s this Abbotts not a patch on her
husband,- although Mr Abbott has not had
one card this year ( there is a rumour of a
sweepstake being run at the club to
determine when the inevitable will occur
though)
Sally went to welly a ball out - she
did so with much verve and, unfortunatley
with the gathered crowd watching another
game, Sallys ball floored an unsuspecting
spectator who required the servies of the
Ambulance squad.
Down 2-1 with only 5 to go Kate popped up
to ensure Tech didn’t entirely ruin our
weekend and
the game finished 2-2. Nen
The Prems failed to back up last weeks excellant performance, and will hopefully
learn from this week as they look to ne more consistent as they season goes on..
After failing to take our chances in the first half we were punished by coonceding
2 goals early in the second half then left the backdoor open as we pushed
forward to get back in the game. MOM Aajay was one of the few to have a good
game,
The Feltchers lost 2-0 to Tech.
We played some good football in patches but couldn’t take our chances. MOM
was the old man Pistol Pete who showed he has still got it.
Heals’ ABL White made it 2 from 2 with a 1-0 win over Cavvy. In an even
gme both tems missed chances before goal a game Rzepecky smashed home
the winner.
Marc and Tel strung some great passes together but the key was another
clean sheet with the Skipper Jabo leading the way.
The weekend at Ellis Park got underway with PV’s ABL team taking on
Varsity. The team showed a big
improvement on last week, Dan scored a
booming 50 yard free-kick to level the
scores 3-3 in the second half before
Varsity’s fitness showed through to win 6-3.
Johnno was all class and dominated the
middle of the park.
The Brandwell teams played their first
derby of the season. As with most derbies
no prisners were taken in a game loaded
with drama, controversy, passion and plenty
of entrtainment.
Both teams spurned chances and the
match was decied with hotly debated penalty
awarded by John “Denny” Mathias to Whites
that Andy smashed home. For the Blacks
Marius looked dangerous and Lee was solid
in goals, for the Whites Rory, Simon and
Benno were strong at the back and Hayds
looked likely outwide.
In the club’s ‘old firm’ derby the Originals
Tim
clamed the coveted ‘Golden Bowl’ with a 3-1
win over the Moa’s in game that had as

Elise
world cup before going to take up a
Schorlarship IPFW University in Indiana.
It is great to see one of the South’s
most talented players getting the opportunity
to show her ability at the highest level.
Whilst we will all miss watching her
play, we are all very proud and will hopefull
get to see her play in Germany. You can
follow her College team at http://
www.gomastodons.com/sports/w-soccer/
ipfw-w-soccer-body.html
The Senior Whites had a big win
over Balclutha, POD was with a hat-trick in
her first game up front, Mich scored a rare
goal and Kels celebrated here selction in the
Black Ferns squad with another swag of
goals.
The Senior Blacks lost 4-0 but put
in a great effort in against a very good
Northern side that Wogga described as the
best he has seen in that grade (including
last seasons no. 1 keeper in Otago).
POD went to Jenna.
www.soccerotago.co.nz
much passion and entertainment but
without the controversies.
The Womens Prems team came
from behind twice to beat a
detirmined Varsity side 6-2.
POD went to the veteran Kush
who remained calm and composed.
The game was held up as
Jordan had to be taken away in
ambulance - pic of collision below -
but she is bloody tough so we are
confident she will make a speedy
recovery.
We also farewelled Elise - pic
left - who is off to he sisters wedding
in Rarotonga, then hopefully she will
be going to Germany to the U-20
ALMOST a perfect day
In the mens fixtures on Saturday only 1 team failed to take maximum points.
In the Main game at Memorial Park the PREMS came up against another
unbeaten side in Mosgiel. I a tight match with few chances it took a goal from Blair
Scoullar to settle the tie and see us maintain our unbeaten run at the start of the season.
Meanwhile in the Late game at Culling , Last years Fletcher Cup winners(Tech)
played last years runner up in what was to be expected a close tussle. The game was
even throughout with both teams having chances.Just when it looked like a draw we
grabbed 2 late goals to win 2-0 .
In the early game on Culling , the
3RDS coming back from altitude last
week to sea level didnt seem to help
them at all and while they controled the
game for long periods were unable to
score and let Northern in at the other
end on the counter. A final 3-nil loss a
dissapointing day for Magic and his
team.
Robs 4THS were away in the late
game at Logan Park and after lasts
weeks poor result went out this week to
prove a point. A much better
performance saw them comfortable
winners 4-0 over University.
Down the Oldies and at De Carle the
gerries had to come from 1-0 down at
half time to beat a spirited Northern side
3-1. Away at Forester Park the Colts brushed aside their first week loss to the Frotters to
record a good 3-1 win. Jimmy not able to get on the score sheet this week but had to get
a mention cause I forgot to say he scored their only goal last week!!
The Frotters had the main game on number 2 against an always hard Grants
braes team. The first half saw a couple of half chances falling to both teams nil all at the
break. In the second spell goals to Matt and half ton with a brace saw the Frotters home
to a 3-1 win. On Sunday the PREM B team a had the bye and our other 2 womens
teams were both at home. Steve’s Prem A coming off a close loss last week took on
University. he result saw them go down 3 nil. Meanwhile on the other ground the
Swans after a draw last week took on an always strong Mosigel team. Goals to
Chelsea(pen) and Maggie had them on the way to a win but Mosgiel equalised in the last
min for a 2-2 draw
Last word.......Magics 3rds let the club down yesterday.....if they had won it was a clean
sweep and the new Club directive come in to play.....free drinks at the bar for an
hour.........the only smiling faces were Tommy Scoller the Bar Manager
and Gav Wheeler the bean counter.... theres still plenty of time yet!!
A quick request in your weekly soccer publication for a coach or
coaches to take on our premier boys’ LPHS soccer team for this
season?
The boys are reasonably talented and have just won the
regional U19 futsal tournament against OBHS 4-1, they will be keen and
eager to be coached well and willing to put in good weekly training .They
should be competitive in the League.
The rewards would be mainly “coaching experience” and my
gratitude but I would make sure that any travel and other expenses incurred
for the coaching were paid. Those interested should email -
Despite the result and being given a lesson in premier
league football the new Dunedin Tech senior B team
came away from the game with a positive attitude.
The girls have come to Tech as a former Otago
rep team looking to developat a senior level. The team
consists of 3 New Zealand under 17 Academy Talent
Centre girls namely Chelsea Whittaker, Holly Smaill,
Polly Inglis. With only 9 regular players available due to
the holiday break it was always going to be an up hill
battle against a strong experienced Roslyn team.
There were good performances from Georgia
Buist-Young, Chelsea Whittaker, Victoria de Filipi and
player of the day Kelsey Kennard. The game was
played in good spirit thanks to Zippy the Roslyn coach
and for his positive comments both pre season and on
Sunday. Andrew Whittaker. Co Coach.
WHATTAGIRL: When it comes to showing
national pride, you can’t beat a woman who
gets a hat-trick in just 18 minutes – while
playing with a broken foot.
Julie Fleeting, captain of the Women’s
Scotland football team, may have a broken
metatarsal – the same kind of fiddly wee bone
that prompted an England-wide panic when
David Beckham fractured one shortly before the 2002 World Cup – but that
didn‘t stop her playing her part in the 4-1 victory over Portugal for European
Championship qualification.
The 27-year-old Arsenal striker, who has scored 103 goals in 105 caps
for Scotland, may come from a sporting background – her father, Jim Fleeting, is
a former Kilmarnock FC manager and current SFA
director of football development – but her family could
never have known when she put on her first football
strip, aged six, just how far she would go.
Having made her debut for Scotland against
Wales, aged 15 in 1996, while playing with Ayr United,
Fleeting’s talents would soon take her across the
Atlantic. In 2002 she became the first Scot to play in
the American pro league after joining San Diego Spirit.
Her time in the US saw her voted Most Valuable
Player by her fellow
players and coaches,
and she was awarded
the club’s Golden Boot.
Fleeting then joined the Arsenal ladies’
team where she proved to be an astute signing
when she scored all three goals in Arsenal’s 3-0
victory over Charlton in the FA Women’s Cup
final – just 24 hours after she had played for
Scotland in Germany. The next year she was
voted Player’s Player of the Year at the FA
Women’s Football Awards.
Fleeting also put her injury concerns to
one side again, as she took to the field in the
74th minute to help Arsenal in a 4–1 victory over
Leeds to win the FA Cup and secure a domestic
double. Pic at right - Culling on Sunday
