Interesting AGM ...
gm@footballsouth.co.nz
Were you sitting up at the back ? Or near the bar and the
savouries, with svelte Susan pouring me a Guiness then a
Drambuie chaser - what a great meeting.
In reality the Meeting covered a huge range of
topics from Dunedin’s bid for FIFA U20 World Cup in 2015
- to a lady who is worried about offsides in small sided
junior games and the prevalence of ‘ Seagulls’ or as we
used to call them, ‘poachers.’
Rab
The 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup will be the
twentieth edition of the U-20 World Cup, since its inception in 1977 as the FIFA
World Youth Championship.
The competition will be held in New Zealand, with between 6 to 8 cities
expected to host matches and an optimistic group led by Fsouth Chairman Dougal
- McGowan not Downie - is pushing to present Dunedin’s best case as a venue.
He makes the point that even a thousand or two dollars raised by each of
Fsouth’s 70 odd clubs, could really help the decision makers look South.
A cold splash of reality was - that unless we are involved in the U20
tourney, our likelyhood of a generous FIFA grant for an artificial turf would be
more than remote. Every club should have a copy of the
AGM report available for people to peruse, and if not, whip out your smart phone,
or wood fired PC and check the document online at Fsouth’s site.
Its not often that ODT soccer guy gets it right, but saying that Grants
Braes and Northern had exciting attacks, and deplorable defences, was about
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ right when the score came in at 5-
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ 4, with the last goal coinciding with
the final whistle, and Murray
swooning on the touchline...
And now there could be
new members on the Fsouth
Board to help replace Clare Taylor
and so on.
At least two likely lads
have applied, and since the Board
has the power to co-opt - hey -
this could be your chance to help
shape the destiny of Football in
Enzed.
Think about it.
OK, but it had better not be any
Rab.
more of your half-baked ideas..
3 Points
Old Boys started the first half into the wind but by half
time the score was 2-0 to the home team. Increasingly
confident and in form striker Robbie Goodwillie turned
beautifully in Mosgiel’s box and drilled the ball in at the
far post to open the scoring early in the first half.
Influential midfielder Barry Gardiner tapped in from a
great Atain Halley cross from the right hand side to
round out the first half scoring.
In the second half Old Boys opened the scoring
again this time through school boy Jack Boland who
rose high to head home a pin point Barry Gardiner free
kick.
To their credit Mosgiel did not give up and were
still fashioning chances through hard work and sheer
determination.
Veteran striker Phil Kelly was a handful at times
and went close to scoring several times. An Old Boys
error in the back line opened up a one on one
opportunity which was clinically dispatched to make the
score 3-1. A soft penalty was awarded which Mosgiel
gratefully converted to make the score 3-2 and made
for an interesting last 10 minutes which included an Old
Boys penalty which was saved by the excellent Mosgiel
keeper.
At the final whistle Old Boys had
held on to bank another valuable 3
points.
Next week we face a demanding
away double header; Green Island at
Sunnyvale on Saturday in round 8 of
the league and Cavy at Tonga Park in
the Chatham Cup. Both games
represent a chance to show we can
get results playing teams above us in
the league.
English Premier League | West Ham United 4-2 Reading
Aberdeen rounded out the 2012/13 season with a 1-1 draw against Hearts but they did so
Varsity 1st took out Green Island in a 3-2
grind. GI were lively at the start and went up 1-
0, after rare error in defence was punished by
a clinical finish. We kept our cool and a break
down the left allowed Pete Rae to calmly slot
the Ifeanyi’s squared ball just before half time.
The first half had efficient passing from both
teams with high tempo and movement while
we enjoyed the majority of the clear cut
chances, going into the break with confidence.
High pressure in the first 10 minutes of the
2nd half resulted in two quick goals to us. The
first a well struck penalty from Pete Rae,
finding the bottom left corner and the second
was a high cross from Josh Jones, which was
followed in by Ifeanyi. The resulting confusion
in the goal mouth saw the keeper eventually
taking the ball into his own net. GI weren’t
happy, we were. 3-1 up.
The desire to win this game was typified by
the non-paying staff on the sidelines and this
spurred both teams on. Varsity played it safe
and sat deep for the remainder of the match
and GI piled on the pressure. Our defence again proved solid with Jeff Potrich superb in
goal. He is such a reassuring presence. A late penalty for GI made for a tense final few
minutes but our desire, attitude and effort got us over the line, even if it was ugly. The 3-2
win taking us equal on points, at the top of the table. Exciting times
ahead.
2nds managed to grind out a 2-1 win against
Northern. The confusion over the field transfer,
resulted in us rushing over to Tahuna Park at
the last minute and kicking-off late. This
showed in the early stages of the
game with us conceding
early on, a good finish
from Northern. The game
was a scrappy affair with
few periods of sustained
possession from either

gm@footballsouth.co.nz
side but we stuck in and were still creating
chances. A shot cross from Rory Dunc Macleod
and a screamer from Michael Bloy either side
of halftime gave us the win. We’re starting to
turn results in our favour which is a positive.
MOTM was Nic Gunn for a game changing
performance of the bench.
Varsity 3rds played Roslyn away at
Ellis Park. Varsity started strongly, turning
their efforts into three first half goals.
However, Roslyn refused to lie down, scoring
two second half-goals to leave the match
finely balanced with twenty minutes to play.
Varsity thwarted any chance of a Roslyn
comeback with two late goals. Final score 5 -
2.
4ths played Caversham in a match
that would send the winner top of the table.
Varsity dominated the first quarter of the
game, but couldn't capitalise on their
chances. Caversham came back with two
goals, displaying skills and effective passing
play, as well as another after the break. An
Evan Curry penalty gave the students hope of
a comeback, but despite heavy pressure in
the dying stages, we couldn't find a way
2-1 Win
Roslyn-Wakari
After a big wait the 125 is finally here, a big welcome to
all of those that have travelled from far and wide and a
massive thanks to all of those that have made the
weekend happen!
It felt like the 125
Sam scores....
th celebrations started a week early with
epic encounter for the first team at Forsyth Barr
Stadium against Cavvy.
In game that ebbed and flowed, cheered on by
some vocal support the lads came from behind to grab a
memorable win. Fras got the opener and Sammy got a
screamer to win the game, POD was Nando who was
superb once again. It’s been a great couple of weeks
with some intense games and the Stumpy next week will
no doubt be another big game; and it’s still only the first
round.
The AJ Grant Seconds also had a very tight
game grabbing a point in a scrappy game out at
Memorial. Marty got the
opener and Mosgiel got a
late equaliser, but both sides had chances to win
the game, POD went to Ryan, a big thanks to Matt
Fallows and Alex who stepped up from the Thirds
and showed they are good enough to play at this
level.
The ABL lads went down 5-2 to a very good
Varsity side. Down 3-0 the lads showed good
character to get back into the game with goals
from Matt Hunter and Vas Te Berrends, but win
their talisman left the comeback waned and Varsity
got a couple of goals as we pushed forward. POD
went to Steve.
The Whites upset the Blacks in a typical Roslyn
derby. The Blacks came back after trailing 2-0 at
half-time but the Whites held on. POD for the
Whites went to Dave and for the Blacks it went to
Brownie, who is rumoured to be attracting offers
from the Chennai Super Kings to join their

coaching staff next year.
The Chargers, led by guest star Sam ‘The Weapon’ Tuitupo-Verwey, gave
high flying Norzen a run for their money up at altitude, but some late goals aided by
some referring decision that Foz didn’t agree with, meant a 3-0 loss.
The Originals led the Stallions 2-1 at half time, but superior skill and fitness
prevented a huge upset and the Stallions ran out 5-2 winners. Blackie, Den and in
particular POD Richie stood out for the Originals. For the Stallions Sherb, Doc, Mikey
and Zippy all made a big difference in the second half, POD was Scotty who was
superb for the full 80. Goalscorers were Sid, Richie, Sherb, Marc, Jas, Chopper and
Scotty.
The Moa’s went down 3-2 to
Norzen but the score wasn’t a fair reflection
Ellis on Sunday
on the game, according to Mini Northern
should have won by more but it wasn’t largely
thanks to a magnificent performance by
Harlem in goals. Next week its sure to be a
clean sheet as ‘Fingers’ Aitken is back in
goal. The Women’s Prems advanced to
the next round of the National http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
Knockout Cup
with a 7-0 win over Northern. http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
POD Mary got a
hatty, Sam got 1 and laid on 3, Kush got a
birthday tap in, Jords got 1 and Alex got the
goal of the game.
The Senior Whites beat Green Isle
8-1, Bee got POD despite missing a pen.
Brie and Tina got hatty’s, Solly got one did
Romper as part of her farewell tour.
The Blacks had 4-1 win over Caversham.
The girls were up 2-0 up at halftime, Cavvy
came back and made it 2-1, but the girls
stood up and met the challenge to get a good
win. Mich was superb in goals.
The Reds drew 1-1 with Balclutha
Paige had a great game and was Pod,
Maddy got yet
another goal. The Glover
The Green Island Premier team played Varsity at Sunnyvale. We were 1-0 and
were cruising, a mistake cost us procession and they counter attacked and
scored right on half time.
One minute into the second conceded a dubious penalty and then
conceded another not too long after. The Uni keeper was outstanding, We
scored another dubious penalty ourselves, had more chances, hit the post and
just couldn’t score.
Man of the Match: Dan Rutter
The 2 nd Team Boys played well in the first half leading 1-0. We were
asleep in the second half costing us 3 goals before we hit back. Final score was
4-2 down. Sam Brouwer
The Third Team had a disappointing game. Tech wanted to be there, wanted to
play and wanted to win. We lost 4-1. The boys need to take a long hard look at
themselves. Onwards and upwards. MOM Greg Samson. Wayne Henderson
The 4 th Team After a frustrating first 45 minutes our young boys finally
got it together and played some great football, getting down the flanks and
scoring some goals. Final result 5-1 to us. Jacob Cromb getting a hat trick and
Hamish and Blair found space down
the flanks and set up many
opportunities but a stand out
performance from Rawiri Campbell
saw him pick up 2 goals. Ra’s
performance was just what the team
needed and thoroughly deserved his
MOM award. Gee Dee.
The Fifth Team played Northern
played really well. Had a few injuries
been double figures if we took half our chances. Fortunately the misses weren’t
costly and a win was secured. Woodsy claimed all 3 goals in a game that
always seemed in our control. Clear 3rd by 6 points with 3 to play to the half
way point. Lets keep it going. Steve Fairley
The Oldies Gold 45’s start of the second round and we were up against
Grants Braes to whom we lost 5-6 in our first game. Even contest with both goal
keepers contributing to a 0-0 score at half time. A well taken goal from Braes put
our boys under pressure in the second half but we didn’t give up and Rangi Junior
put in a good run and cross that even Fadgie couldn’t miss. Final score 1-1. Man
So close ... 3-2
Page 14
Mosgiel
The Firsts had a quick opportunity to overturn our cup exit at the hands of old
boys when we ventured south again. This time we never got going ; 0-2 at h/t ,0-3
with 30 to go and we had Tom Stevens in goals, who was making his 1st team
debut this year , to thank as Tom single handily kept old boys at bay- he saved a
pen , pulled off another
Four classy saves. Couple young guys came up
from the 2nds and played well- Sam, Andrej and TK.
Dunny finally had a goal allowed with 10 to go and when
Reg scored from the spot we threatened to steal a point
however OBs held on for their deserved win.
The top of the Fletchers is extremely with 5
teams separated by the narrowest of margins and we
came up against Roslyn who were in heaven when we
were down to 10 men with only 15 mins on the clock when
Keegan was ordered off-Roslyn scored what may have
been slighlty offside . The boys battled back
and Woody equalised in the 2nd half and the game was a
great tussle and in homage to his retiring hero SAF -
coach Andy was ordered from the side line.
A 1-1 final result means the fletcher cup is
definitely tighter and more exciting than the bundesliga.
Good news for the club is that after Gary Barclay
“walked into a stiff arm” last week he got out of hospital on
Wednesday having only cracked his C2 vertebrae which
means he can still walk and he’s still alive. He’ll be in a
head and neck brace for 12 weeks and we some how
think he won’t be too keen to play in that gentlemans
league that is masters.
Without him the mosgiel Gerries had a good
result 4-4 with Braes. Oldies United hit spanked 4-1
against Melchester with Burgie skying a last min pen.
Masters got trumped 2-4 v Frotts with Foz and
Simon dragging us back to 2-2 but despite throwing
everything at the Frotts we weren’t able to “rub” them out.
Why stop at JUST Goal line Technology ?
Maybe some techno help is needed for Players
and Coaches too ?
The watch on the right could also have
Coaches signalling when to shoot, and maybe a
wee electric shock to stress the point.
beat the keeper.
Of
course, our
man between
the sticks is
often a
traditional type and they usually opt for a Watch
Tattoo, describing their re-actions. This watch can
also help defenders to time their tackles.
But when the last defender is faced with a
1v1, the whole bench sends 240 volt advice for a
And it might slow things a little but the pic
on the left, could compute the proper trajectory,
speed and swerve for maximum efficiency to
hip-high Kamakaze tackle, NOW! as on the left.
Another imperative command is often mentally
sent to the striker who has drifterd past a couple
of tackles into the heart of the oppositions penalty
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
box, and the coach presses
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
his command which trills
the Strikers red alarm,
and he swan dives into
Strika
the earth - Penalty !
But NO its outside the
box, and Its only fair that the Ref gets into the action
and only Richard Roberts has a James Bond watch
with its internal micro accurate laser tape capable of
accurately minutely
measuring critical
distances, to make
sure the Player Wall
is far enough back to comply with FIFA Rule
No. 47b, sub para 19, which states, ‘ Eeh lad,
Milk Cup Squad Selected
gm@footballsouth.co.nz
The 2013 Milk Cup Squad to compete in Coleraine Northern
Ireland has been announced and is as follows:
Jordan Howey-Beattie, Blair Bates, Matthew Kelly,
Ben Heinemann, Jacob Cromb, Henry Crayton, Tsukasa
Inoue, Boon Ozawa, Andrew Marshall, Keegan Taig, Kyle
Beluscak, Liam Gerathy, Ryan Thom, Lew Gordon, Riley
Bungard, James Tucker, Connor Beluscak, Kieran McIntyre.
Following a training camp from the 14 to the 19 July the squad will depart on
the 20 July via Los Angeles where they will play the Galaxy Youth and possibly the
Chivas Youth squads. Once in Ireland they will face the top Mexican side Club
Americana Mexico.
The lads are excited at the prospect of playing such opposition and who
knows who will be encountered in the subsequent rounds of the Milk Cup competition.
Traveling via the US has posed a couple of unexpected expenses. For
example the squad will have to pay for training venues while in LA plus contribute to the
cost of ground hire for the games against Chivas
and Galaxy ($US1575) and a further $NZ2000 onto
the Insurance bill.
So in short folks any financial help that you
may be able to give to either the lads directly or to
the tour group in total will be much appreciated and
help significantly in meeting the short fall in
finances.
This will be a life and football experience
second to none and we are extremely privileged to be able to offer this opportunity
once again to lads from the southern region who have historically struggled to achieve
recognition in the national selection process.
Writing this before the AGM, and looking back to 2012, I would like to remind you
of the great work done by staff and volunteers all over the Federation. They work
above and beyond the call of duty to organise and deliver the game to our far
flung outposts - from Geraldine through Timaru and up the Waitaki Valley (eg with
the Riverside Club), to all points Central ( eg Queenstown Rovers in the ASB
and Gore to Invercargill (with Old Boys now flying the flag in the Premiership).
We are conscious that Football South is not just about what happens in
1-2 Loss
Caversham
There were some mixed results
through the various divisions
this week.
Our Firsts suffered
their first loss of the season
going down 2 - 1 to Roslyn.
This makes for a very
interesting table with any one
of 5 teams in the mix nearing
the halfway point of the
season. This is great for
football in the South.
The Fletcher Cup side
ran out comfortable winners
over Balclutha thumping them 6 - nil in what can sometimes be a tough road trip.
The 3rds started really well against Northern and got up 2, as well as
coming close a few more times, and could have
done with a few more as we let them back into
the game.
Thought we might have been able to hang on
after pulling back to 3-2 after letting the lead go.
But let slip and couldn’t hold them out till
the end, and after they equalised again we
were gutted to have them score in the last
minute to beat us 4-3. Alan.
Caversham Smeg. In football like
aircrashes there is usually, when investigated
thoroughly, an abundance of errors that
individually seem insignificant but when found
in sequence will inevitably lead to catastrophy.
For Smeg the failure of key team
members to show up, not passing to our team
mates, passing the ball to the oposition instead,
not training yet this season, shooting wide, not
shooting at all and not stopping Melchester from
shooting clearly lead to another momentous failure on our part to increase our
points tally.
The game was played in good spirit, refereeing
was great and on the up side... it didnt rain.
2-nil Melchester. Shane.
The Eagles won again beating a tough University
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
side 3 - 1 and that is now 7 straight wins putting them
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
3 points clear at the top after Roslyn White upset
Roslyn Black.
The Phoenix from all accounts had another win
and the over 35s were left to ref the other games
in that division as they had the bye this
weekend. Probably not a
bad thing as some of those old legs look
as though they needed
some R and R.
How refreshing it was on Saturday to ask a new ref how he was enjoying it and getting an
“I’m loving it” reply.
Over recent years we have lost some of our best refs in the south, Alex Wilson,
Wayne Rayner and Dean Seager in particular and that left us short not only of top refs but
also short of refs at all.
However the ranks have been swelled this season with the inclusion of Craig
Cooper, Craig Smith, Craig Campbell, Paul Russell, Mark Dungey and Martin Shadman. I
wish them all well.
On Saturday I watched Craig Smith do his first Donald
Gray Cup senior men’s game and was impressed with the
former Queens Park player’s performance, particularly the
lines he ran, his communication skill and his management of
player dissent.
There’s not much more to it really I suppose, oh!!! and
knowledge of the rules…nearly forgot that.
The game flowed as a result and that’s what it’s all
about. So it’s up to the players, administrators and sideline
experts to give the newies and their colleagues the respect
they deserve and let them get on with it.
Any dealings I ever had with former Footballsouth ref
development officer Chris Boyd were top class and with
Wilson James now in the role i’m sure the good relationship
Craig
among referees will continue to flourish.
Peter McAnelly does a grand job down here managing
the appointments and each week retains his hairline and
beard despite getting to version 7 some weeks.
Next Monday it’s Chatham Cup day and Southland teams Old Boys and Queens
Park meet Caversham (in Dunedin) and Roslyn (in Invercargill) respectively. Cup day is
something I for one always look forward to and Queens Birthday Monday is no exception.
Technology has a part to play in refereeing the game of football.
First there was one referee,
then he/she was joined by two assistants. Then they added a fourth official. Then they
added two more additional “goal-line” assistants for the highest level games. Now we
have goal-line technology getting the green light.
Are people admitting that as the game gets faster and more skilful, making the
right call is getting harder? That it is too difficult to be ‘all -seeing’, that it takes a highly
skilled “team”’ of officials to control all aspects of a game.
Or is it just that technological advances in any sport is inevitable?
Well done to the English Premier league in leading the way for domestic goalline
technology, (to be introduced in the 2013-2014 season). I think it is well overdue
and a pity that FIFA have taken so long to recognise the benefits it will bring. Not that it
will make a difference to me at Sunnyvale or Ellis park.
We’ve all seen the ‘howlers’ of non-goals over the years, and some of them
have been so obvious that it beggars belief. I for one welcome any technology that
allows referees to make the right decision on goals scored. Why shouldn’t the men and
women making the calls on
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
the pitch have the benefit of replays and slow mo’s for
crucial decisions that could
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
effect the result of a game?
The media
certainly uses them to
crucify the officials post
match.
I am not suggesting we
slow down our beautiful
game with endless
replays on every call, like
our oval ball counterparts,
but surely Goal / No Goal
is simple enough to get
right with a minimum of
fuss.
Good - but not enough ..
The Prems had a late game at the Caledonian v Grants Braes.
Braes were without a point and we only had single win to show for our efforts, so it was a
must win game for us.
And things were going on track, we dominated the first 15 minutes and the that's
when the break through came, Cam Higgins made a break on the left which saw his shot
well saved but Angus was there to score from a tight angle with the rebound.
Braes looked dangerous when going forward and when their striker got put through
on goal he did well to chip the keeper to make 1 - 1. Then Paolo scored a cracking goal
into his own net, so we were down 2 - 1 after 30 minutes. But my boys responded well and
Cam Higgins was rewarded for his run into the box converting a low cross 2-2.
And just before half time we had the lead back, Angus beat the offside trap and
cooly converted to give us a 3-2 lead at half time. 2nd half was pretty tight we were still
attacking trying to get a 4th but with the scoreline was still 3-2 with only 6 minutes when we
made an error, the keeper kicking
the ball into their striker and
watched the ball balloon over him
and into the net. Needless to say
Muzz wasn't happy!
But in the 89th minute when
we were throwing everything
forward our centre centre back
Norbert towered above everyone
to head home what we thought
was the winner. Up 4 - 3 in the
90th minute it should have been
game over but Braes didn't give
up and with their best attacking
play of the game they scored in
injury time to make it 4-4.
Muzz was on his knees
not believing what he was seeing.
The game wasn't over though,
and although the coach was
deflated the players kept going,
and again with a cross into the
box Norbert again towered above
everyone to score the winner
with a thumping header!
moan but we were definitely all relieved to get the 3
points which we deserved. Well done boys for
playing to the final minute and never giving up!
It was a great game to watch from the
stands but not one to be a coach !
The forths derby was the big feature of the
weekend - unfortunately the weather took a little of
the gloss off with the game transferred off the
Gardens up to Forrester. To add to the spectacle,
the game was officated in formal style with Becks
controlling the game ably assisted by Pres and
Vice-Pres running the lines.
The game was played with a great deal of
early skill from both teams and good passages of
play. THe 4Bs (in the Maroon) scored first with a
well created chance, the 4As (in black & White)
battled to to get back into the game and the scores
were tied at 2 all at the half. The second half was a
different affair as the 4As took control of the game
and dominated, scoring 4 good goals. The 4Bs
continued to play good football but failed to deal with
the relentless pressure the As applied. Final Score
6 - 2 win to the 4As. 4As PoD Max, 4Bs PoD
James.
The other results had the 2nds go down
2-1 to University after a late start to their game. The
3rds had a come from behind win over Caversham
2-3 down with minutes to go and the lads scored
two late goals to finish the day 4-3 up. The 5As had
a 3 nil win over Roslyn Chargers. http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
Relics lost 5 nil to
Hobbitts which was a creditable http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
result against the
top team.
The Masters had a memorable day with their first win of the season 3-2 over
Roslyn Moas. With eight players unavailable it was a real gutsy effort from the team to hold
on for the win. A hat-trick to Vinnie saw us leading 3-1 at half-time. Tony, Simon, and Scott
played very well in the mid-field and split Roslyn's defence many times with strong running
and good passing. A very close second half saw Roslyn score again but they were denied a
third thanks to tenacious defence by Northern. Our keeper Roly had an excellent game. His
long goal kicks and crucial saves earned him the POD.
To round off Saturday the club gathered for the "Battle of the Teams" a great
night for all and very well organised by Sheena with a dedicated band of helpers and an
expert judging panel. The events had all the teams cheering their team mates on, so a
roudy night in the clubrooms.
Thanks too all who attended and to those that helped out. The night was rounded
off with some stunning team songs - the best of which was the Masters. It ended up being a
very tight race which saw the Prem Men carry on their winning ways for the day taking out
the top prize with the 4As
coming in at second.
Murray and Ian R.
