Clipboards, Midgets and Streakers...
It was clipboard country writ large - at Sunnyvale, where the
Worlds Footie Assessors assembled to assess each other,
and focussed on tall thin red head Dan who controlled the
RW v GI womens match at Sunnyvale.
No pressure of course, just a concerto of scribbling
pens every time Dan blue his whistle, no pressure of
course.New Zealand Football Referee Development
Manager Ken Wallace was in attendance - and of course
Rab
he had the biggest clip board of all.
But setting standards for NZ Refs, Peter O’Leary will add Olympic Games
to his formidable refereeing resume. The Whangarei school teacher has officiated
at eight FIFA events including four FIFA Club World Cups, two FIFA U-20 World
Cups, an U-17 World Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa where he
was a fourth official. Well done Peter.
Club treasurers everywhere will also applaud Auckland having booked a
FIFA Club World Cup spot. New Zealand side Auckland City will fly the Oceania
flag at the FIFA Club World Cup once more after beating Tahitian opponents Tefana
3-1 on aggregate in the final of the 2012 O-League.
Go Auckland ! The better they do - the more we get...
Its been a great run of Autumn weather, Wilson James, the famous Fsouth Met
Man advises me its the best run of weather since he played pre-war school
football. And the Midget matches at the Oval on Sat. morning were terrific.
Blue sky and happy wee faces.
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
Interesting that ‘Throw Ins’ have been
http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
dumped and re-starts are now kicked in.
Sensible fine tuning that - and the quality of
some of those tiny kids augurs well for
fitba’s future in this area.
Of course the big kids ( students )
are incorrigible - witness the naked runners
round the Gardens on Saturday, tsk, tsk,
BVG even spotted where the Streakers
carry their wallets, credit cards
and phones...
The 1sts had a very tricky
Chatham cup encounter vs
Northern Hearts.
Six Minutes in they were
1 nil up, through a gem of a strike
– an own goal from the Heart’s
centre back. Tom McLean doubled
the lead minutes later with a
power drive into the corner. The
first good start of the season for
the lads meant they had to
weather a fight back, as Hearts
dominated possession
culminating in a goal shortly
before the half.
The two Cam’s then
combined well in a quick counter
and cross which Cam McPhail
finished well to restore the 2 goal
cushion. In the 2 nd half James
O’Callaghan added a forth (and
another to his personal tally)
curling one into the top corner and
the victory. POD Cam Higgins.
The 2nds had a seven nil
drubbing at the hands of
Caversham – least said soonest
mended. The 3As struggled
through their first half vs Tech.
After an inspired substitution by player/coach Marc (he brought himself on!) the
game changed rapidly with 2 quick goals. Final Score 5 nil.
The 3Bs were less fortunate going down 2-1 to Melchester. A sending off
and a caution not helping the lads so 10 vs 12 is always an uphill battle.
The 4As had a 3-1 loss to Melchester – no news from that front!!
The 4Bs had a struggle to beat Roslyn Black. The lads rose above the aggro and
played football. They scored early through Mike who had a strong game, The
club’s youth is looking good. Fitness and style proved decisive on the day. The
www.soccerotago.co.nz Page 4

gm@footballsouth.co.nz
game was poised at 2 all until the near full time when the ascendency came. POD
was Max Jardine.
The 5As had the bye and enjoyed a run out against the Mosgiel youth.
Perhaps abit tentative with the young lads and handed them the game 3-1. The
5Bs had a good 4-1 win over Mosgiel
Div 6 the Relics had a tough outing vs Melchester. Made tougher by a own goal
which can only be described as a stunner – sad it was at the wrong end. POD
Graham Hunter
In a close fought game the Mighty Masters battled to a 1-0 win over
Grants Braes at Ocean Grove. Our defence was key to the team’s performance,
Grant, at left-back, had an excellent game and was awarded POD. On the right,
Alistair had his best game so far.
Mike in Goal had a solid game and read the play exceptionally well. In
mid-field, Pete and Brian linked well with our strikers creating space and scoring
chances from accurate long passes. Roly also provided nice touches and
constructive play from central mid-field. Simon made a strong contribution in the
2nd half with his pace and support play.
Vinnie scored a freakish goal early in the 2nd half from a sharp angle
which everyone assumed, including their keeper, was a pin-point cross! We’ll be
going hard for a hat-trick of wins next week.
The Prem Women had the weekend off so the only women’s result was
the Women - White who had a good 3-1 win over University
NZ Ferns Fly out
New Zealand's U-20 women's football team depart on Sunday for three testing
World Cup warm-up matches in the USA missing one key player but including a
notable new face. http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
As part of preparations http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
for August's FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in
Japan, the Junior Football Ferns will meet two time U-20 world champions USA in
As usual at the start of the season there are a fair number of dispensations applied for
in junior grades - some to play up a grade or two and some to play down.
There are rules to cover this in the Junior Handbook, but of course there are
grey areas, and it often just comes down to your interpretation of the individual's
situation, whether the dispensation is (or should be) allowed or not.
How will the player cope phsically and mentally? Is the player's safety at risk?
I think that coaches, parents and clubs should also give careful consideration to the
wisdom of wanting kids to play up a couple of grades, in particular.
It has been quite common in Dunedin over the years for the more "talented"
players to play up two grades - looking to get ahead ! ?
Footballsouth encourages clubs to play kids in their own age group - which is
more likely to give the player a chance to flourish and improve his technical and tactical
skills - as well as developing
socially.
It's a bit like pushing the
kids ahead in accelerant classes at
school - in the end what does it
really achieve?
Football is keen to develop
the whole individual with the 4
Corners ( Mental, Physical,
Technical & Tactical and Social )
approach. And maybe it would lead
to less dispensations and less
angst surrounding
the issue.
The Prems got through to the next round of the cup in
a difficult away trip against a very good Rovers side in
Queenstown. With penalties looming super-sub Jacko
RodeKaka delivered a pin point cross for the Gov’ner
to thunder home.
Everyone was relieved although Pete was
backing himself if it came to a shootout. Others to
play well were YMC and Damo who nearly got Wan
but it was ruled out for offside.
The Feltchers conceded their first goal of
the season and their first loss. Disappointing that a
couple of lads failed to show, but still a good effort
Govan scores winner,
Sunnyvale
from the lads. We created
some chances but
couldn’t put them away
and conceded with 10 to
go. POD went to Fras
with Jesse and Avie both
playing well.
The ABL lads took their
chances and defended
well to earn a good 4-0
win over Braes. PV and
Billy had good games
was POD Matty “shotcross”
Fallows who
scored 2 screamers. At
the back Tim and the
lads were outstanding.
Credit to Pee Wee and
the GB boys who will be
threat as the season
goes on if they continue
to improve.
The Healthy Soils
Blacks had their first
loss going down 4-2 to

gm@footballsouth.co.nz
Norzen B. Irish and Sean got the goals with
O’Shea going close. POD was the Danish
Delight Chirstensonsonson. Great to see
Mrs Lippers looking after Lippy and Team
GBR at his fiesty best.
The Whites also went down, 4-0 to
GI. The lads played quite well but couldn’t
put an real pressure on the GI goal. POD
went to the super coach Barry Barry.
The 5ths let Mornington score their
first goal, take their first lead and earn their
st point of the season; so it looks like
Fozzies 1st game in charge might be his
last. The lads did well to comeback and
managed to hit both posts. POD went to the
Energizer Benny, great to hear Andy’s op
went well.
The Stallions came from behind to beat a hand Tech Colts side 4-1 on the
smallest ground in Dunedin. Rob, Scotty, Jas and Mort Shoes got the goals, POD went
to the tireless Scotty for yet another fantastic game.
The Originals had a first half to forget against Mosgiel trailing 7-0 at halftime.
The showed a lot of ticker to keep battling in the 2nd half and came close to grabbing a
consolation goal. POD went Pat/Horse Aimers
The Moa’s drew 2-2 with Tech Trotters despite missing a truckload of
chances. Minnie was superb, as Tamer who reffed. POD was PJ who scored one with
the left peg and a header.
The Colt 45’s kept their 100% record and managed to the win the 2nd Kush
half as
they beat Tech Gerries 5-0. Bazza got a hatty, Honk sliced in a shot scross and Adrian
got the goals. POD went to club captain and air guitar legend Robert Kerr Oram.
The Womens Prems beat GI 3-0 in an excellent game at Sunnyvale with both
sides trying to play good football on the deck. Kush celebrated mother’s day by opening
the scoring with lovely 30 yard free kick (but
still trails in the Mardale St golden boot).
Steph scored a good goal, and Sammy
eventually got the third. The backline was
outstanding snuffing out attacks and playing
out well, especially MatInca and POD Alice
who had a great game apart from her
shooting.
The Whites had a 4-1 win over Tech, Brie
was in sensational form scoring all 4 goals
and getting POD, and showed she is still
one the best finishers in town. The Blacks
had a heartbreaking 3-2 loss out at Ocean
Grove. Lydia and Leanne scored the goals
and superstar Aleisha
Johnstone was POD.
The Green Island Premier Team. Bad Day in
Invercargill, first team lost 3 - 2 to Old Boys in
Chatham Cup and we also lost Sean Flett to long
term injury (broken collarbone). Sean is Green
Island A.F.C. through and through, injured in 29th
minute, supported the boys for the rest of the
game from sideline before heading off to
Invercargill hospital E.D. Thanks Sean. Peter
Martin
The Third Team. After a big night all the boys
turned up slightly late and heavily hungover. It
was a bad day with no one keen to play. With big
dog Sossy kicking our buts we were soon kitted
up and ready to play. The first five minutes went
well with stand out passing from the backs, Cam
Cook and Ben GC Stewart. A goal was scored
and Andy started crying. We all had a team hug
to lift the mood. After another few minutes Andy
got chipped and we lost our self esteem except for fired up Sam Brouwer. Another goal and Soss
got vocal. Lost 3-1 and the rest of the report is for Soss’s eyes only
www.soccerotago.co.nz Page 10
The 4 th Team. Our young boys are
starting to understand just what is
required to win games in senior football.
Hard work and more hard work! A great
4-0 win over Roslyn with Sean Pilgrim
and GD two each to put away Roslyn.
MOM Sean Pilgrim worked hard up front
and deserved his two goals. Hamish and
Tyler played much better in the second
half to lock up the mid field. We have
Varsity next week which will be a real
test, but I think we are ready despite the
fact our older guys are breaking down.
Graeme Darling
The Fifth Team played Cavy Phoenix, a
multi national team. Managed to get to a
3-3 draw with a favourable Ref. In the
end the draw was probably a fair result.
Our age is starting to show and maybe
we need to accept we should be playing
Oldies.
The Oldies Green had a good game in

gm@footballsouth.co.nz
good spirits against Braes. End to end
action. Braes took their chances with an end
result of 4-2 to the Braes. Pete Wilson was
class.
The Youth Team played Maori Hill at
Roberts Park. After same good football we
shot to the front with goals to Hamish, Tyler
and Moff with a superb volley. 3-0 at half
time we had control. The second half we
fluffed about with the ball too much and
didn’t score anymore. We have Roslyn next
week which is a top of the table clash. The
boys will have to play well for 70 minutes to
win this one. MOM Blake Porteous who had
a dominant game at centre back. Gee Dee.
The Fifteenth Grade. The opposition Roslyn
team were a very good, very hard and big
and strong team. We had to match them in all areas to compete. Went down 1-2 in the
end. MOM Hamish Copper. Special mention to young lads, Ryan, Tom, Joseph and
goalkeeper James. Well done Lads! Kevin Scoullar
The Green Island Premier Womens Team played Roslyn at home. We knew it
would be a tough game and it was. The
girls ran their guts out and battled away
against a very good Roslyn side. Stephanie
l\Lee was inspirational in midfield and Mel
Todd and Daytona Helm calm at the back.
We continue to grow each season and if we
stay together hopefully better results will
come. Player of the match Daytona Lost 0-3
Keith McFadyen http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/
nd Division Women’s Gold. We
played the other Green Island side today.
Our team played very well, 6-0 up at half
time with some great passing throughout
the team. In the second half I changed the
team around with our goalkeeper ,Becs
going to striker and our other fullbacks
playing up the field. We came away with an
8-0 win. Big ups to Becs scoring her first
goal. POD Alana . Paul Kelly
2nd Division Women’s Green. We
found ourselves down by three goals after
ten minutes and never really recovered. The
Forbes platform in Defence....
A potential cup run was rought to
an early shuddering halt as Uni
put 4 past us without reply.
Injuries deprivng us of a few
players and we called on the
older heads of Mike, Phil &
Nathan Forbes to shore up the
ranks
The old adage of don’t
concede early and don’t
concede just before half time
weren’t listened to and Uni were
2 up at the break- Uni scored yet
again early in the 2nd half, and
with that all thoughts of an
unlikely comeback- we threw on
the rested Tom Bekkers up front to give us some Peter Crouch like aerial dominancebut
it was Uni who scored again - rounding out a resolute 4-0 victory over our boys who
have the bye to look forward to next week.
The junior 3rds also took on Uni in the early game, and with this writer arriving
late and watching an even contest for 20 minutes- enquired to what the score waswas
stunned to hear we were 0-4 down. wee Jamie Drew & Kitt Collins up front were
giving a good account of themselves and their pace was always threatening to the
giant tall timbers in the Uni defence.
Michael Barnes in midfield was getting forward and making good use of the
ball, Keegan, Ben & Shay were kept busy by Uni’s fast flank play and when we
conceded a 5th with about 20 to go a whipping was on the card- but the young uns
rolled up their sleeves and absolutely
gave the students a lesson in football
being a 90 minute game- we poured
forward and spanked in 3 incredible
goals to have the crowd on their feet and
the students anxiously looking at the
clock. If the game lasted another 10
minutes Uni would have been guilty of
doing a Devon Loch.
Masters United v Gerries saw
the goal glut continue with the teams
sharing a12 goal thriller- unfortunaltey fo
the Gerries , United were greedy and got
11 of them . Anton getting a hatrick and
Kris coming up from goals also getting on the score sheet
Mosgiel Masters also put 11 past Roslyn, 3 - 0 up after 5 minues, 7- 0 at half time. Prec
bagging 4 , Mono a hat trick, a beaut from Chris and an unbelieveable 35 - no a 38 yard
drive from Chopper, before late goals from Keepr Gaz and Whitty rounded out the rout,
Prec being denied the POD due to Choppers phenomal strike.
The womens team played a very youg Tech Diamonds and we were 2-0 down in the
first 5 minutes, we came round and had enough possession to get something out of
the game- Courtney continung her fine scoring run pulled one back,
but Tech scored again to take the game 3-1
With the Premiers having the day off due to Chatham
Cup games, attention turned to the Fletchers who
were hosting Roslyn in the early game at Culling
Park. Roslyn up to this point hadnt conceeded a goal,
so we knew we were in for a tough encounter.
We played into the wind first half both keepers not
really called upon to make any saves of note. Richard
Smith dominating in the Centre of Midfield. Mike
Fridge impersonator Brad Rodden creating many
chances.
Rodden scored midway through the second half and
we dug in and held out to grab the 3 points. That put
Guilty...
us
back
on top. Great stat showing only one
loss in 23 games for these guys.
The 3rds played Northern at
Forrester, Coach Ayoub being assisted
by Mike Fridge. Nil all at half time and
the young guys battling well. Dont
know what was said at half time but
we were quickly down 2 nil after only a
few minutes. The lads lost 0-5 but they
are continuing to learn and are
pushing for higher honours.
Robs 4ths had a great victory
6-2 against Caversham. We scored
after 45 seconds. Jason Little getting
a hatty.
The Colts played Roslyn on
Dunedin’s if not the worlds smallest
pitch at Ellis Park. Dunedins leading
Radio Personality Callum Procter
opened the scoring.
Yet another defensive error
gifting Roslyn the equaliser. Another
even encounter, we didnt hold on to
the ball for long enough and made to
Victor
many mistakes. Roslyn won 1-4.

gm@footballsouth.co.nz
The Frotters had a 2 all draw with
Roslyn, Chids got a penalty, and Roger Dunn
scored his best goal for the Club. Chids
commented of his concern that players now
deciding to play golf in the mornings on Saturday,
then attending the 19th for a period, and ending
up arriving at their game a little worse for wear.
POD Toots.
The Gerries still struggling for numbers
played a very good Roslyn side lost 0-5. Thanks
to Roslyn for lending some players.
If anyone is keen these guys are looking
for numbers, they always play the game the way
the Masters grade should be played. Let us know
if you are keen.
On Sunday the Premier ladies played
University, not a great game for the viewers. We
ended up winning 3-1. The girls now start to
prepare for the Knock out Cup, where we are
hosting Queenstown.
Diamonds played Mosgiel, winning 4 1,
Sophia getting a brace. Alex solid at the back.
Swans travelled to Roslyn, in an even afair the
score line probably didnt do them justice. We
lost 1-4. POD Renuka.
Fletcher Cup. The reserves went about their work
again this weekend with a good 7 nil win over
Northern. The boys put the game to bed in the first
half with a display of good attacking football. The 2nd
half was slightly more even with the foot coming off
the accelerator a wee bit however a good all round
performance. Tim
Third Division, 3rds had a bit of a messy win.
Started with gusto and played some good football,
and but then started to succumbing to old age and
injuries. Able to hold out Green Island in the 2nd half
despite them having a fair share of possession.
Lucky we got up 3-0 first half, to hang on and win 3-1.
Alan
4th Division, Nothing much to say this week. Not
just because I’m so loaded with pain killers that I can
barely see the keyboard and can’t remember what I
did an hour ago let alone yesterday afternoon. There
just was not anything worth mentioning from a Smeg
supporters point of view. We couldn’t get eleven fit people onto the field, we couldn’t
pass the ball, we couldn’t tackle, we could’nt
shoot and Tech scored three times from four
shots in the first twenty minutes. Tech played
well and deserved the win while we picked up
another two injuries to add to our woes. At
this rate I’m predicting we won’t be able to
field a team by June. Tech 6 Smeg 2. Shane
5th Division, The Phoenix fought out
a well deserved 3 all draw with Green Island.
A great result as it is always a struggle out at
Sunnyvale. The Eagles continued on their
winning ways with an easy 5 nil win over
Mornington.
Masters, The over 35s continue to
struggle with another loss against a strong
Hobbits side being beaten comprehensively
4-1. It was tight up until halftime where the
score was 1 all but the Hobbits ran
away with it in
the second half.
Nelson Suburbs thumped local rivals Richmond Athletic 8-0 in a game that ended with
10 v 8 on the pitch. Suburbs ended the games with 10 men as when player coach Ben
they had 3 sent off, however it wasn’t a dirty game and Richmond have cause to be felt
No throw ins - No adults... on the Field at the Oval..
This season 83 teams are participating in
the Whole of Football Plan Fun Football skills
sessions and games at the Oval for 6 7 and 8
year olds. There are an additional eight teams in
the 6th grade activity when compared to last
year which is positive in regard to growth.
Two seven minute skills
sessions precede the games – where
coaches execute fundamental skills
sessions. They can cover :
General Movement – developing movement
traits in players fundamental to playing.
Football Coordination – teaching players to
use the ball with all parts of their body.
Football Technique – developing skills such
as dribbling and passing.
After the skills sessions the players are
generally raring to go – so they can show off
some of their footie talent in front of family and
friends. This year there are no throw in’s
(replaced by kick – ins) and opposition players
have to retreat to halfway when a team takes
a goalkick.
Wahoooo !
Also – we want adults off the field – one
coach patrolling each sideline works just as well –
and each coach can assist the play when required. It’s a brand new challenge for many at the
Oval – kids trying their hardest to get possession of the ball - then dribble, pass or shoot – let
alone having to navigate around an adult who is standing just a few metres in front of his team’s
goal – checking his text messages !! It does happen !!
Three on the Trot
Grants Braes travelled to Invercargill for a
first round Chatham cup-tie against Waihopi.
Braes, who are still yet to win a game this
season, were determined turn their luck
around. They dominated the game from the
off, going close from the set piece on four
occasions.
They looked comfortable going forward
and had the better of the possession in the
opening stages. However, it was Waihopi
who took the lead when one of their players
was fouled in the penalty box.
Goalkeeper Anthony Melon managed to get
a hand to the ball but couldn’t quite stop it
hitting the back of the net.
As the game reached the final stages
Braes made a substitution, bringing on Blake
List, who immediately raised the intensity of the game and scored an equalizer in
the 86th minute. Braes pushed on and in the 88th minute got a well-deserved
winner through striker Sam Martin. Grants Brae will
progress to the next round with a new found confidence which will hopefully give
their season the boost it needs.
In other scores Grants braes 2nd went down 11-2 to a fantastic university
2nds side…. Two consolation goals from Nick Patterson still could not spare Braes
the embarrassment.
Grants Braes 3rds lost 4-0 away at Roslyn while the senior women’s Al
side won 3-2 and the over 35s had a good 4-2 win.
