Broward County Public Schools
2011: District Accreditation Self Assessment Report
Quality Assurance
1) What processes does the District use to monitor and document
improvement?
In our data driven district, school improvement is monitored through the School
Improvement Plan (SIP) process. Schools create an annual plan of how they will
improve academically in support of achieving Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).
Depending on the achievement level of the school, the District provides support teams
and instructional review teams that partner onsite with school staff on a predetermined
schedule with site-appropriate goals. Schools that have achieved AYP goals are
supported and monitored by the area offices.
Additional District resources aligned to the improvement process include:
District Strategic Plan
School Data Chat
Customer Satisfaction Survey’s
School Improvement Department
Office of Student Assessment and Research
District Intervention and Achievement Plan (DIAP)
2) How does the District provide meaningful feedback and support to its
schools and across the District?
The district is geographically divided into three administrative areas that enhance the
personalization of the governance and communication process. Each area
superintendent has three area directors and support staff that provide direct support
for the schools. The Superintendent’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT) meets weekly
to discuss and make decisions on District wide initiaves and projects. Area
Superintendents, who are members of ELT, communicate the conversations and
decisions at the Disrict level to their respective areas, providing a consistent message
throughout the District. Also included in ELT are representatives of all major functional
areas in the District. Communication between ELT and District stakeholders is a twoway
street. District-level, area-level, and school-level stakeholders can send forward
topics for discussion at ELT.
3) How does the District ensure that the AdvancED standards are met by all
the schools and the District as a whole?
The district reviews AdvancEd recommendations from 2006 on a quarterly basis at the
Superintendent’s ELT meetings. AdvancEd standards are also posted on the
accreditation website and changes or revisions to the standards are communicated to
schools through the principal level meetings that are held once a month. All schools
complete a self-assessment in which they rate each indicator for each of the 7 standards.
The self-assessment ensures that principals, assistant principals, teachers and the
entire staff are aware and understand each accreditation standard.
The District’s strategic plan, to be written after the accreditation visit, will address
recommendations from the current visit. The new AdvancED standards will be
included in our School Improvement Plans. Broward County Public Schools continues
to build accreditation capacity throughout the District with the end-goal that all staff
and stakeholders understand and strive to meet accreditation standards.
4) How does the District regularly collect, use, and communicate results?
A regular assessment schedule and a streamlined process allows all stakeholders to
collaborate in the administration and collection of assessment data. Locally
administered assessments, such as Benchmark Assessment Tests, are scored and
reported to the data warehouse quickly, so that students, parents, teachers, and
administrators can utilize student performance feedback to guide student learning.
Aggregate achievement data are analyzed and reported by the Student Assessment &
Research Department and presented in reports available on the District website or in
summary tables provided to schools via the data warehouse School Reports menu.
