Introduction<br />

Living in a foreign country is a rewarding experience, but it can be difficult if you are always at a loss<br />

for where to go to get the basic necessities like food and clothing or what to do when a family<br />

member is sick and needs medical attention.<br />

Be assured that we have all gone through this stage and come out of it, having grown as well as<br />

enjoying our new lives. By sharing the resources we all accumulate during our stay here in the<br />

Stuttgart area, we can help not only the current school community but also those who will come after<br />

us.<br />

The recommendations in this handbook have been received from past and present ISS parents. We<br />

hope that it will continue to be updated with current information and corrections. If you have any<br />

corrections or new ideas please send them to the PTA via the school office or email the PTA<br />

Welcoming Committee Chair.<br />

You may find a mixture of American and English spelling, reflecting the backgrounds of the various<br />

About Stuttgart<br />

History of the city<br />

Stuttgart was originally a stud farm for horses and was probably founded by Duke Liutolf of Swabia, a<br />

son of emperor Otto the Great, in 950. “Stuotgarten” or “Stutengarten” (Mare’s Garden) was the name<br />

given to the settlement which grew up around this stud farm and was first recorded in1160. The Stuttgart<br />

coat of arms, a black horse about to leap on a gold backcloth, is a link back to this stud farm.<br />

Stuttgart received its municipal charter around 1219. Up to 1495, it was the residence of the Counts of<br />

Württemberg, from 1495 to 1803 the residence city of the Duchy, from 1803 to 1805 the seat of the<br />

electorate and from 1806 to 1918 the residence of the Kingdom of Württemberg.<br />

In 1918, Stuttgart was made the capital of Württemberg, in 1945 of Württemberg-Baden, and in 1952 of<br />

the newly formed Federal State of Baden-Württemberg, the third largest in the Federal Republic.<br />

Today’s Stuttgart<br />

The Capital of Baden-Württemberg is the heart of the region. Stuttgart is uniquely situated in a valley<br />

with steeply rising hillsides. Surrounded on three sides by wooded hills, opening to the east towards the<br />

river Neckar, the city enjoys a pleasant climate. The vineyards reach as far as the inner city. The many<br />

parks, forests and sloping vineyards confirm Stuttgart’s renown as one of the most beautifully situated<br />

cities in Europe – some 11.000 hectares (26.000 acres), half of its total area, are made up of forest, parks,<br />

fields, vineyards and gardens.<br />

The city has a world-wide reputation as one of the most economically important major cities in Europe.<br />

Two universities, three technical colleges and institutes of international acclaim ensure the close bonds<br />

between practice and research.<br />

Stuttgart has always been the intellectual and cultural hub of the state.<br />

The city is a model example for the cultural opportunities it offers. For example:<br />

Attested by the numerous museums and galleries, in particular the New State Gallery built by the British<br />

architect James Sterling.<br />

The concert, ballet and theatre life of the city is of a comparably high standard.<br />

Stuttgart is also known as the “city of books” and has about 150 publishing houses and as many book<br />

shops. (A German record). Major functions and sports events are held in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-<br />

Halle and in the Culture- and Congress Center Liederhalle.<br />

Completely different standards are set by the international trade fairs and exhibitions on Killesberg. For<br />

example, the Stuttgart International Fair is the annual stage for the CMT International Tourist Exhibitions.<br />

Friendly Swabian wine bars, restaurants for all tastes foreign cuisine, as well as pubs, bistros,<br />

discotheques and night clubs keep life on the move in the city.<br />

An after hours service is provided on a roster. The shop’s rostered ‘on’ duty stay open at night or on the weekend or<br />

public holiday. The addresses and phone numbers of the shops rostered on duty are given in the German<br />

newspapers. All shops have a sign in their window saying the nearest shop open on duty. Additionally, doctors who<br />

are “on-call” over weekends and holidays are listed in the local German newspapers. For residents of Stuttgart, this<br />

would be the Stuttgarter Wochenblatt. In Herrenberg, it would be the Amtsblatt.<br />

4 Shopping<br />

Shopping hours in Germany may be quite different than what you are used to. In general, shops are open Monday –<br />

Saturday. All shops are legally required to be closed on Sundays except for gas stations. Some of the bigger gas<br />

stations are actually mini-markets that can be a lifesaver on Sundays or other off hours. Many smaller shops will<br />

also close during the middle of the day for 1-2 hours. This is generally not true on in the city of Stuttgart.<br />

On Saturdays the larger stores downtown are open until 7 pm or even 8 pm. Check individual businesses for details.<br />

5.2 Garbage<br />

A cultural difference one may notice immediately concerns garbage. In general, Germans are more conscientious<br />

about the environment and recycle almost everything. The method of handling recyclables and garbage collection<br />

varies from town to town. Therefore it is important to call your local rathaus to obtain the correct information. Each<br />

town will provide an annual calendar listing dates for the various types of pickups as well as what is allowed to be<br />

recycled. Billing will vary depending on the particular arrangement with your landlord. The following will provide<br />

some general information.<br />

Biomüll – Usually a brown can is provided for anything that can be composted (primarily foodstuff such as fruit and<br />

vegetable peelings). Garden waste can also go in here. For larger yard waste there are usually some annual pickup<br />

dates or the yard waste must be hauled in your car to a local recyclinghof .<br />

Paper - Usually a green (or blue) can labeled Altpapier is used for flat paper and cardboard.<br />

Restmüll – Usually a grey or black can is used for restmüll, which is anything that cannot be placed in one of the<br />

other types of garbage. The charge for pickup on restmüll is generally higher than the other types of garbage to<br />

encourage recycling efforts.<br />

Gelbe Sack – This is a plastic yellow sack usually provided at local grocery stores and your local rathaus for all<br />

recyclable materials with the green arrows (Grüner Punkt) on them. This would generally include all plastics, cans,<br />

and tetra packs. Some towns have pickups at the curb. Others must bring their sacs to a recyclinghof. A container is<br />

not provided for these sacs to store them between pickups.<br />

Glass – Glass is handled two ways. If there is no deposit (it may read ’kein pfand’ on the bottle) on the item (ie.<br />

pickle or medicine jars), it can be recycled at local glass containers which are found throughout the town. They are<br />

generally blue/gray boxes with three drops for clear, brown or green glass. Often there are restrictions on when you<br />

can throw away your empty bottles as the sound of smashing glass can be loud. Bottles with a deposit (generally<br />

most milk, soda, water, beer or wine bottles) can be returned at your local grocery or getranke store.<br />

Batteries – Batteries can be disposed of at any store that sells them. Look for small battery containers at your<br />

supermarket or electronics stores such as Technoland and Media Markt.<br />

Special arrangements must be made for large items. Some towns will have one annual pickup date.<br />

Note that your movers may take your boxes etc., but you must call them for this or arrange a pickup date.<br />

If you are buying furniture, you may want to leave the boxes at the store or make sure the garbage goes with the<br />

delivery men.<br />

The Tourist Information Center (i-Punkt), opposite the Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) has several excellent guides to<br />

museums / galleries / exhibitions. In addition, the Tourist Office provides information on Stuttgart, including maps<br />

for the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, and buses. This office also provides the Stuttcard (www.stuttgarttourist.de/ENG/ipoint/stuttcard.htm)<br />

which costs between € 12 and € 18 and it is good for three days consecutively,<br />

for one adult and two children. It gives you free or reduced admission to many state museums, discounts with city<br />

tours, boat trips, theaters, swimming pools and the likes, discounts with food and drinks, free transport with all<br />

public transportation means within the city. The book “MUSEEN IN BADEN WÜRTTEMBERG” published by<br />

Theiss (ISBN 3-8062-1888-9) lists every castle , museum & gallery in the State. It is in German, but has many<br />

photos. Watch out for the “Heimatmuseum” in your town: almost every village & town boasts a museum of the<br />

local culture.<br />

entrance fee & collect fossils. Ammonite fossils are abundant. In an hour you could have many. It is fabulous. Take<br />

The so-called Narrenschopf is a museum where you can see more than 400 different carnival costumes from 71<br />

towns in the southern part of Baden-Württemberg and the alemanic part of Switzerland. It provides a unique<br />

overview of the traditional carnival which is still very alive today.<br />

The Solemar swimming pool is also a special experience, a treat for your health and wellness. For it is really<br />

relaxing to move around in the 11 salt water pools where the water has just the right temperature.<br />

century. It served for the purpose of representation, for the accommodation of living, social, dining and servants'<br />

rooms. The facility is connected with the residence castle in Ludwigsburg through a twelve kilometer long, straight<br />

street, the course of which can easily be recognized. Beautiful small “pleasure retreat” surrounded by forest.<br />

summer including a Biergarten ; 2 cafes all year round ; good for roller skating/inline skating. Lantern festival &<br />

Dagersheim<br />

Directions ; From Böblingen on Calwerstraße. Past Multimarkt on left. Enter Dagersheim (street name changes to<br />

Böblingerstraße) turn left on Waldstraße. Park located at end of street. Parking on left, playing fields on right, park<br />

and woods straight ahead. Great for walking in the woods, cook out , great play equipment including a cable swing.<br />

Waldheim<br />

Many towns have a local Waldheim. A Waldheim is a beer garden, with a big play area and sports fields. Many<br />

Waldheime serve simple German food. Check a map of your town to find your Waldheim or consult your local town<br />

Waldspielplätze in Degerloch<br />

There is a nice playground in the Degerloch Forest just off Königssträßle near “Haus des Waldes” with a fire place<br />

for BarBQs. You cannot book the fire place. First come first serve.<br />

Another playground is in the forest north of Jahnstraße. Park your car near the TV-tower, cross Jahnstraße and walk<br />

down through the woods (there are good footpaths) towards the city. You will not miss the playground after ½ a<br />

mile.<br />

9.1 DVDs<br />

General<br />

The standard video format in the USA is NTSC. In Europe it is the PAL format. Televisions and most VCRs<br />

purchased in the US are not compatible with TV signals and videotapes in Europe. VCRs can be purchased which<br />

play both NTSC and PAL video cassettes. However they will only record in PAL format.<br />

Most DVD players purchased in Europe will only play Zone 2 DVDs. This means DVDs purchased in the US (Zone<br />

1) may not be played on European players. Multi-system players may be purchased but are not as common as the<br />

There are many language schools listed in the Yellow Pages of the phone book under Sprachschulen. Classes can<br />

range from a few hours a week to intensive courses of five or more hours a day. Most schools will ask you to take a<br />
