OFFICIAL NOTICE BY THE NATIONAL AUTHORITIES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
UNITED KINGDOM NATIONAL LISTS OF VEGETABLE VARIETIES
1. Revised United Kingdom National Lists of Vegetable Varieties were last published in the February 2011 Special
Edition of the Plant Varieties and Seeds Gazette and amendments to these Lists have been published in the
subsequent monthly editions.
2. The Agriculture Departments now publish the Lists which with effect from 30 June 2011 are the definitive UK
National Lists of varieties of vegetable plant species. These include all amendments up to and including 31
December 2010.
3. The varieties are listed in species order and this follows the numbering order of the EC Common Catalogue of
Varieties of Vegetable Species. The lists of species are divided into two parts, List A and List B, as follows:-
List A denotes the varieties of which seed may be certified either as “basic” or “certified seed” or controlled as
“standard seed”,
List B denotes the varieties of which seed may be controlled only as “standard seed”.
4. Included against each variety name are references to the maintainer or maintainers of the variety. Also included
are traditional synonyms which have been accepted in the United Kingdom and, where appropriate, the main name
as shown in the EC Common Catalogue of Varieties of Vegetable Species in order to provide an easy cross
reference to the Catalogue. The synonyms are shown immediately below the variety name preceded by a dash.
5. Appendix A lists “maintenance” names. These are not part of the National Lists and must not be used by
themselves in advertising or dealings in seeds. They should be used in conjunction with the appropriate listed
varietal names provided that the varietal name always precedes the “approved maintenance” and the latter is given
no greater prominence than the varietal name. Varieties with maintenance names are identified in the main list with
the symbol @.
6. In the case of varieties added to the National Lists since 1 January 1973 the dates of addition have been shown.
Against certain varieties the symbol * appears. This indicated the variety was entered on the original National List
provisionally and that the entry became substantive only on the date shown.
7. Attention is again drawn to the fact that it is an offence, subject to certain exceptions, under the Seeds (National
Lists of Varieties) Regulations 2001 (as amended) for any person to sell, hold with a view to sale or offer for sale or
any disposal, supply or transfer of seed to a third party seed of a variety of a prescribed species unless that variety
is included in the UK National List or the EC Common Catalogue; the principal exceptions are sales etc. in
connection with exports of seed to countries outside the EC area and contractual arrangements for multiplication.
Other exceptions are where authorisations have been granted under the seed marketing regulations to market
appropriate quantities of unlisted vegetable varieties for the purpose of gaining knowledge from practical experience
during cultivation or to market small quantities of uncertified seed either listed or unlisted of agricultural or vegetable
varieties. It is also an offence under those Regulations to offer or expose for sale or sell seed of a variety of a
prescribed species except under the name given in the National List or EC Common Catalogue, and to advertise
seed of a variety of a prescribed species until the naming procedures laid down in the Regulations have been
completed and except under the name which the National Authorities have approved.
8. Any variety which has been deleted from the Lists but for which the National Authorities have allowed a period
for the disposal of seed stocks which have been produced or were in the course of production when the variety was
deleted from the List are indicated below the appropriate List. In each case the date of the expiry of the period
permitted by the National Authorities is included. It is an offence to market the seed after those dates.
9. (H) denotes that the variety is a Hybrid
