Tours start soon—Get ready for Kindergarten! 

Families with children who will be ready to start 

kindergarten next year in the Ferndale Schools 

will get many opportunities to find out what to 

expect in our kindergarten classrooms. The first 

are biweekly tours scheduled during the school day, so 

parents can see and feel what it’s like inside our classrooms. 

The tours are starting this month, and are scheduled on 

opposite weeks (except 11/7 where both schools are 

hosting) to allow parents an opportunity to visit each 

school at the beginning of the day. Parents can also 

request a tour at another time that is convenient for them 

by calling each school office. See dates and phone numbers 

at right. 

There will be opportunities to meet the principals and 

learn about Ferndale Schools’ elementary curriculum and 

instruction, including early literacy, student achievement, 

school routines, brain-based learning, the Open Classroom

Parent Programs 

focus on parenting 

and child trauma 

Oakland County Youth Assistance 

Coordinating Council is sponsoring a 

parent program entitled, “His Brain/ 

Her Brain: Parenting Our Sons 

and Daughters for Success” by Pat 

Crum-Lubben, Parent Educator, DeVos 

Children’s Hospital on Oct. 24 at Novi 

High School and on Oct. 25 at Baker 

Middle School in Troy. Both programs 

will begin at 7 p.m. A flyer is available

These programs are free and open to 

the public. 

On Oct. 25 Ms. Crum-Lubben is also 

presenting a program on “Trauma and 

Loss in Children” for professionals who

[Holiday Giving] 

2012 Toys for Tots 

Look for 2012 Toys for Tots posters posted at all the schools during the upcoming 

holiday season. The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to 

collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and 

distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in 

which the campaign is conducted. 

The Donation Center is open every Saturday at the Royal Oak Township Recreation 

Center, 21272 Mendota, Ferndale. (313) 518-1043. 

GIVING: If anyone who wants a box in their school, 

please visit the Donation Center to pick up one on Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. 

RECEIVING: Toys are available now. Bring verification of income, children’s birth certificates or 

school records (no Social Security number required), and a current ID to the Donation Center.

[Excited about Science] 

FMS Students get 

hands-on lesson 

about chemistry 

Seventh Grade science students had a fun 

and enlightening demonstration about 

science this week during their class with 

teachers Kristine Hill and Anton Gjonaj. 

The national PlastiVan Program traveled 

to their school for its annual visit. 

“The premise of the program is to get kids 

excited about science, specifically 

engineering. It’s important that they we 

start to get kids to know what engineering 

is all about,” says the program’s outreach 

educator, Marjorie Weiner. She says 

that as part of the program, the goal is for 

kids to learn the chemistry of plastics and 

the applications of a material they use 

every day by bringing it to a level they can 

see and understand. “Engineering is NOT 

out of reach for any of these kids. It’s an 

option for every single one of them.”

Parents invited 

to preview UM 

web survey 

Throughout the past decade, 

the Ferndale Schools have been 

collaborating with researchers at the 

University of Michigan on a National 

Institutes of Health federally funded 

study of students regarding their views 

about their school experiences, which 

includes a survey of risky behaviors, 

including drug and alcohol use. 

The survey asks middle school 

and high school students through 

an online survey for confidential 

answers. ONLY students with their 

parent/guardians’ signed consent can 

participate in the web survey. The 

survey will take place in December and 

February. 

Parents are welcome to attend a 

special preview session of the web 

survey. A representative of the U-M 

research team will be available 

to answer questions. The preview 

session will be Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012 

from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Harding 

Administration Building, Room 11.

Congratulations to the Boys Tennis 

Team (especially the seniors) with 

a strong showing at Regionals at 

Cranbrook. 

Freshman Jacob Keller at #2 

Singles, advanced all the way to the 

quarterfinals before falling to a 

nationally ranked player. 

It was a great year for the boys wth 

an overall record of 7-4-1. Senior 

Captains are Keith Waldrup and 

Dominick Duldulao.

Enrollment in Roosevelt’s brain-based 

program is open to all enrollees in the 

Ferndale Schools, and enrollment in 

the Open Classroom offered at both 

Roosevelt and Kennedy requires 

participation in the district’s annual 

magnet lottery, tours of both schools, 

enrollment in the district, and application 

for the lottery prior to Feb. 28 each year.

[Stan the Fireman] 

Grant students learn fire 

safety in a fun way 

William Schneider (a.k.a. “Stan Safety, the 

Fireman”) was at Grant Early Childhood Center 

this week during his annual fire safety visit. Stan 

the Fireman is in his 14th year as a fire safety 

educator and travels to different schools in the 

area teaching fire safety, taking children for rides 

around the parking lot in his miniature fire 

engine. Siren included! Stan usually does about 

350 shows a year for audiences of delighted children, 

including those attending Grant’s 

preschool programs.

installed on it, it will launch the message automatically from this link. If you use a web-based mail system, right 

click on the teachers name and select “Copy Shortcut,” within your email program, right click and paste the

Attendance: This area gives you an hourly update of your attendance record including absences, excused absences, and 

tardies, for example, based on your schedule for the day. The data is live, so you will see updates as soon as
