Strategic Plan - Your Opportunity to
Contribute to the Future of the District
Focus groups have been planned for several school groups to give parents and
community members an opportunity to share their views about the Ferndale
Schools with the Strategic Planning consultants from Project Innovations. In
March, the focus groups planned include parents of students at the elementary
schools, elected officials from the district’s four municipalities, realtors and Ferndale
Chamber members, and school improvement team members. Plans are also underway, in
collaboration with the Ferndale Schools African-American Parent Network, to host a focus
group for the African-American community in April. See page two for the schedule of
upcoming focus groups.
We want to know what you think survey: There will also be an opportunity for
individuals to participate in a survey that will contribute information for the Strategic Plan.
In partnership with the School Improvement Team, the Strategic Plan Steering Committee
is requesting that individuals from the community at-large (not district parents or
employees) complete a survey on the school climate. The Community Survey is accessible
via this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2Y5MY8Z
Strategic Plan & Focus Groups, continued.
The Community Survey (link on previous page) is also a required component of the
Ferndale Schools districtwide School Improvement Team process, and is mandated
by Title I grant funding. The feedback from the community at-large is important
to understand the impact the district has on the community, the involvement of
community members with the district, and the views of the community toward the
district.
Focus Groups for the Strategic Plan
Participating in a focus group may be one of the most important contributions parents
make to their children’s education and the future of the Ferndale Schools. Please share
the information below and invite others from your school or group to participate in
the upcoming Focus Groups as part of the district’s Strategic Plan process.
[Remembering Our Students]
UHS students remember classmate Sammuel Lee II
Ferndale Schools community is mourning the loss of a University High School student
who died as the result of an accident over the midwinter break. Sammuel Lee II was
a senior at UHS with plans to study electrical/computer engineering at one of several
colleges where he had been accepted. UHS students and staff gathered at school over
the break to remember him with the support of grief counselors from Common Ground
Sanctuary. The students made a memory banner that was presented to Sammuel’s parents
at his funeral. The University High School community has established a memorial fund
to support Sammuel’s funeral expenses. Donors can contribute via the Sammuel Lee II
Memorial Fund through the Pay Schools system on the district homepage.
slated for UHS, Roosevelt
Improvements at Roosevelt Primary and University High Schools were
presented at the last Board of Education meeting on Feb. 25, by Bill
Weinrauch of TMP Associates, Inc. Slated improvements include a fullservice
kitchen and new HVAC throughout Roosevelt, with the exception
of the kindergarten room which received air conditioning from the 1995
bond improvements.
University High School’s storage rooms will be transformed into a fullservice
kitchen, allowing the staff to prepare food onsite and offer more
choices. The UHS gym will also be air conditioned.
[Feb. 25 Board Meeting Highlights]
“We understand that
students are not just
disabled from 8 to
3 pm. We want to
support them and
their parents with the
understanding their
care is 24/7” —Ray Locke
Executive Director, Special Education
Special Education Update
Ray Locke, the Special Education Director for the District, gave an update on the
department’s programs and services offered to the Ferndale Public Schools’ students
from birth to age 26. Click Here to access Locke’s PowerPoint presentation posted on
the district Publications Page.
Special education offers a variety of programs within and outside of the district,
with student services ranging from teacher consultation to a full-time special
education classroom placement. The Special Education Department operates under
the philosophy that special education as a service, and not a place.
Special Education program eligibility and the range of services are determined
by an Individual Education Program (IEP) team. The IEP team must include the
student’s parent, if the student is a minor, the general education teacher and a
special education teacher or service provider. In addition, the team may include the
building administrator, the Director of Special Education, the school psychologist,
an advocate or other person the parent requests be present, and other special
education ancillary staff. Locke said, “I always recommend parents bring along
another pair of ears to an IEP meeting because the information is so complex.”
Ancillary staff includes speech therapists, the school psychologist, physical
therapist, occupational therapist, school social worker and, occasionally, consultants
from Oakland Schools, the Oakland County Intermediate School District.
Students who are in a full-time district special education program are typically
mainstreamed into general education classes for small portions of their day based
on the student’s needs. Students who have disabilities which require a great deal of
support may attend school outside of the district in a program known as a centerbased
program.
2012 MEAP Results show District Improvements
Barbara Evoe, Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction, made a presentation
reviewing the 2012 MEAP results for Ferndale Schools students in grades 3-9 at the
February Board of Education meeting. Her report, Understanding the 2012 MEAP
Results, is posted on the district website. Click here to access on the Publications Page.
Evoe stressed that the district’s goal on standardized testing is to show continuous
improvement and beat the odds. She outlined the district’s scores for all students, and
then drilled down to focus on students who are socio-economically disadvantaged.
For these students, no matter which district they attend, statistically they are
‘expected’ to test at a particular rate. This “linear trend line” for MEAP performance is
90% accurate at predicting how students will score as a district, or group. However,
in Ferndale, Evoe said: “We are outperforming predicted outcomes on reading, math,
and writing for socioeconomically disadvantaged students. We are beating the odds.”
Pauline Nagle, the District’s Coordinator of Elementary Instruction, added:
“Individual potential has been a big focus for us. High quality instruction in the
classroom has been a huge emphasis.” She also noted that the District has been
conducting professional development on the new Common Core Curriculum
standards, and conducting strategic planning for students following analysis of the
results.
“We believe Data Teams will impact next year’s scores,” said Evoe. “Principals have
received data early this year, so they have additional time to review and identify
very targeted priority areas.” The Data Teams meet during the district’s School
•
Improvement Mondays which began last September. Data Teams are collaborative
teams of teachers, principals and instructional leaders who focus on improving
teaching and learning for every student. They meet to review student achievement
data and prescribe instructional practices and interventions to address specific needs.
Nagle also believes the computer-based program, Success Maker, at the elementary
and middle school levels is starting to make a positive impact on students. Nagle says
students must be on grade level for reading to do well on all of the tests. Science and
social studies scores indicated areas in need of further focus going forward.
“We are
outperforming the
county on reading for
socioeconomically
disadvantaged
students. We are
beating the odds in
reading.” —Barb Evoe
FHS students
tour Spain
Ten Ferndale High School students
studying Spanish recently
arrived back from their February
trip to Spain. The students, who
are all in Spanish 3 or higher and
in good academic standing, traveled
with FHS Spanish Teacher
Julia Lopiccolo and 2004 FHS
Graduate Janelle Wolak (who
was on the first FHS trip to Spain
in 2003). Students visited the
Royal Palace and the Reina Sofia
Modern Art Museum initially and
enjoyed a traditional tapas dinner
and walked around Madrid.
Throughout the week, they lived
with host families in Sesena near
Toledo. They attended school
and went sightseeing with the
host families. Near the end of
their trip, the students traveled
to El Escorial, a monastery where
the royalty of the Spanish crown
are buried. They then went to
Segovia to see El Alacasar, castle
and the Roman aqueduct. The
travelers spent about a year
fundraising and six afterschool
study sessions to prepare for the
trip.
Board of Ed approved
Resolution for Joe Mahan
The Board of Education approved a special
resolution for Joe Mahan for his 65 years of
service as the “Voice of the Eagles” during FHS
athletic events. The Scoring Table at the FHS
gym was also named in his honor.
FHS Athletic Director Shaun Butler, organized
a recognition ceremony for Mr. Mahan during
halftime of the Feb. 15 Boys Varsity Basketball
game. Mr. Mahan’s family was there for the
presentation and retired FHS principal Herb
Ivory, Superintendent Gary Meier, and Butler
each spoke about his years of dedication and
service to Ferndale Schools and the community.
Ferndale Schools honors
Joe Mahan
“The Voice of the Eagles”
Joe Mahan, known locally as the Voice of the Eagles, has been the public address announcer for
Ferndale athletic events since 1947 and has been honored for his distinguished 65-year career.
Accolades include the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association with their
2002 Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Mahan, a 1944 graduate of Ferndale’s Lincoln High School,
also supervised the summer baseball program for 25 years, and served as a charter member of the
Ferndale Sports Booster Club. He has been honored twice with recognition on Ferndale High School’s
Wall of Honor for his years of dedicated service. He retired from the Detroit Public Schools in 1989 after
a 38-year career as a teacher, counselor, and principal. He and his wife Barbara are renowned for their
gardens and plantings that beautify the community near their home and in Roosevelt-Geary Park.
Because of his dedication to our students, Ferndale High School’s Hansen Stadium press was named in
his honor in 2005: The Joe Mahan Press Box – Home of the Voice of the Eagles.
We are so fortunate Joe and
Barbara Mahan chose
Ferndale to be their community.
Not only has Joe been our
legendary announcer, but with
Barbara by his side, they have
served our neighborhoods and
our students for many years. It is
fitting that after a life of creating
unique opportunities to honor
and recognize others, Joe is being
honored in turn for his legacy by
the Ferndale Schools. I personally
extend my appreciation to Joe
and Barbara Mahan for their service
to students and our district.
— Gary Meier
Ferndale Public Schools
Superintendent
Thank you Joe (and Barbara)
Mahan for everything you have
done for Ferndale Athletics,
student/athletes, and the entire
Ferndale Community, in general.
It was a pleasure to work as clock
operator, at your scorer’s table for
so many years at FHS JV/V home
contests. I learned a lot (quickly)
and you made sure of that! Your
honor of receiving the prestigious
MIAAA Forsythe Award for
Distinguished Service was welldeserved.
What a career! Thank
you and best of luck, Joe and the
Mahan clan.
— Robert Francis
FMS Assistant Principal
Joe Mahan is synonymous with
Ferndale Basketball. There is not
an official, opposing coach or
true fan who has not enjoyed a
positive experience in their time
with Joe. He and his wife Barb
were incredibly selfless in their
support for Ferndale High School
and the athletic department.
The legendary status that Joe
has achieved is well-earned and
he will never be forgotten as,
“The Voice of the Eagles.”
collegepreptips
A small group of parents, administrators, legislative and business representatives are working together on The Eagles Pledge, an initiative to provide or facilitate financial resources
and support services to help graduates of Ferndale High School pursue their dream of a post-secondary education. The Eagles Pledge meets on the fourth Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. each
month, at the Harding Administration Building, 2920 Burdette, Ferndale. Each week, eNews will feature checklists of information to help parents and children prepare for college at every
grade level. These college prep tips are from the U.S. Department of Education:
How to find the right college or career school
Assess Yourself
Understanding your career goals and options (and their earning potential) will help you find a college or
career school that meets your needs. The Department of Labor’s career search tool will help you match your
skills and interests with potential careers. Use the College Search Tool
You can use the U.S. Department of Education’s college search tool, College Navigator, to find colleges
and career schools that may fit your needs. You can search for schools by location, degrees offered,
programs/majors, tuition and fees, setting, size, and much more. The search results for each school will give
you a wide range of information, such as general school information; tuition, fees, and estimated student
expenses; types of financial aid provided; net price; enrollment; admissions requirements; retention and
graduation rates; accreditation; campus security statistics; default rates for students with student loans
College Navigator allows you to compare schools, save your session, and export your results into a
spreadsheet. Choosing the right school involves a variety of factors including your interests, career goals,
and financial situation, as well as the school’s cost, size and location, and admissions requirements. See a
list of things you should consider when researching schools.
Attend College Fairs
College fairs give you the chance to talk to representatives from multiple colleges and career schools.
You can learn about various schools, and their representatives will answer your questions. If you’re in high
school, ask your school counselor about college fairs in your area. You can also go online to find the National
Association for College Admission Counseling college fairs or National Scholarship Service college fairs.
Check Out Schools (In Person or Remotely)
Check out the school’s website. Lots of colleges and career schools now offer virtual tours, so you can
still “see” the campus, even if you can’t visit in person. You also can get information about programs and
classes offered at the school, find out if the school participates in federal financial aid, and learn about
campus life.
A great way to get a feel for a school is to contact the school and schedule a visit, preferably while
classes are in session. Make sure you’re comfortable with the facilities, equipment, teachers, and students.
Be sure to bring a list of questions to ask.
Talk with students who currently attend or have attended the school you’re considering to get their
opinion of the school. If you are visiting a school in person, ask the campus tour coordinator if you can
talk students who are currently attending the school. If you can’t visit the school in person, contact the
admissions office staff to see if they can connect you with current students or alumni.
