Friends of Filoli 

President’s Message 

It has been a very busy Spring 

at Filoli. Many thanks to 

Debbie Kundrat and Linda 

White for their wonderful 

Spring Fling event; they had so 

many new and fun activities 

going on, keeping our guests 

thoroughly entertained, myself 

included. The weather was 

perfect and as I strolled around 

the property I couldn’t help 

but overhear many positive 

comments about how well 

everything was organized. 

Thanks to the many dedicated 

volunteers and staff for their time and efforts in putting on this 

event; Filoli is so very fortunate to have them. 

The Flower Show and Mother’s Day brunch were equally 

successful as well. My sincere thanks to Suzanne Legallet 

and Janet Bennett for the good job they both did on this event. 

There were more than 100 exhibitors and the brunches and teas 

were more popular then ever, a tribute to the reputation and 

hard work that went into the planning and execution of this 

event. Coming soon will be the June “Members Only” Twilight 

Stroll, the Jazz at Filoli concert series and a new event this year, 

Wine with Roses. Please see the following pages for details 

including the dates tickets may be purchased for these events.

The House and Garden docent training has been completed. As 

a mentor I am extremely proud of the new graduates. Being a 

mentor is one of the things I truly enjoy at Filoli. It is a chance to 

work with my fellow mentors and have the opportunity to be a 

part of the perpetuation of this wonderful estate. It is a pleasure 

to see the different styles new docents have developed. I know 

each and every one of them will do a great job taking our guests 

on tours. 

If you haven’t already done so, please come out to Filoli and 

enjoy all the wonderful things we have to offer. Summer is 

always such a beautiful time of year, as the property shows off 

its beautiful plants, trees and flowers. Who wouldn’t want to 

spend time here?

From 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, Filoli staff will host the annual thank you event for Friends of 

Filoli volunteers. The staff always looks forward to this special afternoon because it’s an enjoyable way for the staff 

to recognize the dedication of Filoli’s more than one thousand volunteers.

July and August 2007, Filoli Highlights 

Jane Risser, Our New 

Executive Director! 

I’m delighted to announce that Jane Risser is our new 

Executive Director. She will report to the Filoli Center 

Governing Board and be responsible for the overall 

administration of the organization. Jane joined Filoli in July 

2006 as Director of Development and had responsibility for 

overseeing development efforts, visitor and member services, 

as well as marketing. As many of you know, since February 

she has also served as interim executive director following the 

resignation of our previous executive director, Susanne Pandich. 

Jane brings superb management experience to Filoli, having 

worked with both small and large organizations throughout 

her career including Apple Computer, Nortel Networks and 

Broderbund Software. She majored in Classical Greek and Latin 

at Wellesley College and earned her M.B.A. in finance from The 

Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. For more 

than 30 years, she has worked as a volunteer and has gained 

much experience in the areas of fundraising, event planning, 

and volunteer training and development. 

Jane is a 20-year resident of the Bay Area and lives in Palo Alto 

with her husband and three sons. She continues to be an active 

volunteer in educational endeavors. 

The staff and I thank you all for your support during the 

interim period. We look forward to working together and 

continuing to share the beauty of Filoli with new and returning 

visitors.

gardens while sampling fine wines, cheese and 

fruit followed by a sumptuous dinner?

CURATOR’S CORNER Ju l y a n d Au g u s t 2 0 0 7 

Museums and historic houses here in America contain 

some of the finest art works from all over the world, but 

the majority of this nation’s collectibles rest in homes 

just like yours. Treasures have been handed down from 

generation to generation with the expectation that we 

will protect them for the next generation. 

We unfortunately act as if our collections will last forever 

unless they are broken, stolen, or vandalized. Not so! 

Everything ages. Have you looked at your slides from 

the ‘70s? Most deterioration of art objects happens very 

slowly and is easy to ignore, but we should be calling 

for help. We don’t need 911, we need a professional 

conservator. Two organizations here in the Bay Area 

make it easy to find well-qualified professionals. Bay 

Area Art Conservation Guild (BAACG) members will 

be here at Filoli on Thursday, August 16 to share vital 

information about what we can do to preserve and 

protect our treasures. Members of BAACG and of 

the Western Association of Art Conservators (WAAC) 

conserve art objects at museums in the area, at historic 

collections like those at Filoli, and they are the people to 

contact when your personal art work needs help. Join 

us for Conservation Day on August 16 and learn from

BOOK SALE TO BENEFIT FILOLI LIBRARIES 

Did you know that the libraries at Filoli have an 

outstanding collection of books on decorative arts? 

If you are looking for information about ceramics, 

furniture, glass or other decorative arts, the Sterling 

Library is the place to come for anything from 

casual reading to serious research. (Please call for an 

appointment 650-364-8300 x205). 

We are able to purchase books for the library largely 

because of your donation of books for our Annual Book 

Sale to be held Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14, in 

the Visitor & Education Center (VEC). Help us make 

this the best sale yet by donating books for the sale 

before July 11. We feature cookbooks, garden, travel, 

decorative arts and history books. No novels, please. 

Please bring donations to the counter in the VEC or 

leave them at the guard house. Come to the sale to 

replenish your shelves with treasures.

• Getting to Know the Filoli Staff • 

This issue of Highlights marks the inauguration of the 

“Getting to Know the Filoli Staff” column. 

Linda Fujimoto (pictured left) joined Filoli in November 2006 

as Holiday Traditions merchandise buyer. Prior to joining 

Filoli, Linda was co-owner of Twin Concepts, an awardwinning 

retail store in Menlo Park that specialized in oneof-a-kind 

artists’ works, unique merchandise and apparel. 

Thanks to support and direction from Reo Haynes (Garden 

Shop Manager), Lucy Tolmach (Director of Horticulture) and 

many enthusiastic Friends of Filoli volunteers, Linda’s efforts 

for another successful Holiday Traditions event in 2007 are 

well underway. 

In late March, Jacque Giannini (pictured right), joined 

Filoli as Tour Office Coordinator, reporting to Cynthia 

Foster, Manager of Visitor Services. Jacque works Tuesdays 

through Saturdays. Previously, Jacque was the receptionist 

at Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo where her 

responsibilities were similar to her new ones at Filoli—taking 

reservations, welcoming guests and answering phone 

inquiries. In Jacque’s eyes, she’s now in “heaven” here at 

Filoli.

Computers & Monitors Needed 

Our heartfelt thanks to the several donors 

who have recently provided Filoli with much 

needed computing power. These computers 

are being fully utilized at various locations on 

the property. 

If you are wondering how to dispose of a no-longer-needed 

computer or monitor, perhaps Filoli can help. We are in need 

of several computers (desktop or laptop models) for both staff 

and volunteer needs. Models with recent operating systems 

(Windows XP Pro or Macintosh OS X) will be appreciated. 

We also need 17-inch flat panel monitors. If you have any

~ Calling all Volunteers ~ 

Because of the success of Sunday openings, our visitor counts 

for Sundays continue to increase dramatically. As a result, 

we need additional volunteer help on Sundays in the following 

areas: Tour Office, Cafe, Information Services, Garden Shop, 

Self–Guided Docents. 

In recognition of your willingness to help on Sundays, we are 

having a contest! All Sunday volunteers are invited to enter the 

contest each Sunday they volunteer. Details regarding filling 

out the contest entry and where to deposit the entry form are 

available in the Tour Office. You may enter for each Sunday that 

you volunteer between May 20, and October 28, 2007. 

The drawing for the winning entries will be announced at the 

November 7, 2007 Friends of Filoli Annual Board Meeting. 

Prizes include complimentary tickets to the Holiday Traditions 

Gala, and gift certificates to the Café.

Do you have precious family heirlooms that are falling into 

disrepair? This program, which includes talks, demonstrations 

and advice on what can be done to save your treasures, is just 

what you need. Professional conservators will talk about the 

conservation of objects, share information about some of Filoli’s 

conservation efforts and provide one-on-one guidance about 

preserving your special heirlooms or antiques. Participants can 

bring up to two (2) pieces that must be small enough to hand-carry. 

Consultation fee: there will be a consultation fee of $15 for each 

piece you bring. This is a rare opportunity for you to learn from the 

pros!

Filoli is pleased to extend the opportunity for artists 

and photographers to have access to the gardens 

after hours. Experience the quiet beauty of this rare 

and historically important example of an early 1900 

country estate. Registration is limited to artists who 

work with watercolor, pen, pencil, charcoal, pastels 

and photography. No oils or acrylics, please. Space is 

limited, pre-registration is recommended. 

Plein Air to Studio Watercolor Workshop 

Monday, August 13 - Friday, August 17 

9:00 am - 4:00 pm 



This five-day workshop will help you learn to paint 

plein air while enjoying this wonderful and historic 

National Trust garden. Daily demonstrations, critiques 

and personal instruction are included. Students will 

study color, composition, values, textures, mood and 

how to collect information through digital photographs, 

sketches and color notes for their studio paintings. 

These studies will be taken indoors for a more indepth 

look and to produce larger studio paintings. The 

workshop is open to all levels but beginners should 

have some painting experience. A materials list will be 

available upon registration or can be downloaded from 

our website at www.filoli.org, Education page, under 

the course description. 

SPECIAL Artist Access — Nature Photography 

Tuesday, August 28, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm 

Guides: Filoli Nature Education Docents 

Fee: $15 for members, $20 non-members 

This is a rare opportunity for inspiring photographers 

to capture Filoli’s outback in the light of the setting sun. 

Trained nature education docents guide small groups 

on a nature hike to ideal locations for photography. The 

moonrise this evening is at 7:30 pm so if you are lucky you 

can capture the rising moon! Because this is a nature hike 

dress appropriately: layered clothes, comfortable shoes.

Botanical Art Exhibit this summer. 

Botanical art is experiencing a 

renaissance both in the States and 

internationally and Filoli has proudly 

played a prominent role on the West Coast. A collection 

of beautiful and accurate plant portraits by artists hailing 

from the United States and abroad are displayed in the 

Filoli ballroom. The Filoli Florilegium, a selection of prints 

from the Banks Florilegium and a beautiful display of 

antique prints on loan from Lyons Ltd. are also displayed 

in the house and the Visitor and Education Center. 

Opening Reception 

On Thursday, June 21 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, 

Filoli will host an opening reception for this exquisite 

exhibition. Artists are on-hand to share their botanical 

art knowledge; wine and hors d’oeuvres abound; and a 

collection of prints, matted originals and note cards will 

be for sale. A visit to the gardens after hours will complete 

this special evening. Admission is FREE, however, 

reservations are required. Please RSVP by email to

of the California Watercolor 

Association will be on display in 

the Visitor and Education Center. This superb exhibition is 

juried by the renowned George Rivera, Executive Director 

and Senior Curator of the Triton Museum of Art in Santa 

Clara. Most of the original pieces on display, as well as a 

variety of matted originals, prints and note cards are for 

sale during the exhibition. 

Visitors have an opportunity to talk to the artists, ask 

questions, watch painting demonstrations and more on 

“Meet the Artists” Day, Saturday, August 4 from 10:00 

am - 2:00 pm. A special talk by Tom Rogers, Filoli Curator, 

is being presented in the ballroom. See description below.

Ernest Peixotto, celebrated California artist, writer, and 

friend of the Bourns will be the topic of this talk by Tom 

Rogers, Curator. Rogers will explore the connections 

between Ernest Peixotto, Willis Polk, and Bruce Porter 

and how their lives were entwined long before their 

connection with Filoli. The talk will cover the planning 

for and execution of the murals of Muckross in the 

ballroom.

Botanical Art 

Filoli offers a wide range of botanical art workshops taught by 

both accomplished Bay Area and regional instructors as well

JENNY RETURNS TO FILOLI! Join us for a week of 

botanical painting with Jenny Philips, world-renowned 

artist. This workshop will give students the necessary and 

essential drawing skills and painting techniques for botanical 

art. Students will focus on refinement of paint handling, 

awareness and importance of light and composition. Some 

prior painting experience recommended. A materials list will 

be available upon registration or may be downloaded from

Flora in Focus Workshops 

The object of botanical art is to reveal the identity of a plant 

in both its aesthetic beauty and its accurate physical details. 

Each Flora in Focus Workshop leads to the observation and 

illustration of a specific plant group, such as, camellias, apples, 

grasses, wildflowers, etc. Guidance on artistic techniques in 

the studio will be supplemented by visiting the plants in the 

garden and a discussion of important botanical features. 

Students work in the medium of their choice and provide 

their own materials: No oil or acrylic please. A materials list 

will be available upon registration or can be downloaded

Botanical Art Certificate Program Classes 

This year Filoli is introducing Botanical Art Certificate 

Program classes. These classes will offer a unique in-depth 

study of botanical art through a challenging, integrated and 

comprehensive curriculum. The curriculum will include the 

systematic study of artistic skills and concepts, basic botany 

and botanical art history. While the official launch of the 

Botanical Art Certificate Program is forthcoming, participation 

in these classes will be credited towards completion of the 

program. Enrollment in the certificate program is not 

necessary to participate in these new classes. 

Students who are planning to enroll in the Botanical Art 

Certificate Program are required to take these courses in order

Transparent watercolor is the traditional medium 

of botanical art. This beginning course serves as the 

foundation for painting in watercolor. It will cover basic 

materials such as papers, brushes and paints. Students will 

learn techniques through exercises using different washes 

and application of paint on wet and dry paper. Dry brush 

work used for accuracy and detail will also be covered. 

These methods will be applied to basic plant forms as 

students develop their skills. Homework assignments are 

given in each class.

History of Botanical Art

This class is an in-depth study of the rich history of botanical 

art from its earliest beginnings through the 20th century, 

including its recent revival and the important role it plays 

today. Hands-on learning through an exquisite collection 

of prints, slides and other media focus on major botanical 

artists such as Georg Ehret, Ferdinand Bauer and P.J. 

Redoutè as well as the study of other historically significant 

events like the Age of Exploration and major Florilegiums. 

Students enrolled in the botanical art certificate program 

pilot will be required to write a 1-2 page paper on their 

favorite botanical artist.

Awaken your child’s sense of wonder and exploration at the 

Filoli Nature Preserve. Children join our trained naturalists 

for discovery time on the trail and in the classroom for 

hands-on activities, engaging them in a deeper connection to 

the natural world. During the program parents can enjoy a 

tranquil visit to the house and garden.

the world and the threats facing them, visit the Visitor and

Did you know that Filoli’s Nature Preserve has more 

than seven miles of trails crisscrossing six different types 

of native California habitats? Join experienced Nature 

Education Docents on a guided hike along some of these 

well-maintained trails for a 2 1/2 hour hike. Visitors taking a 

nature hike pay the admission to Filoli, which also includes 

access to the House and Garden. Nature Hikes are scheduled 

in June and July on Saturday mornings starting at 10:00 am.

Filoli Home Floral Design Certificate Program 

The ever-popular Filoli Home Floral Design Certificate 

Program begins a new decade. Anne Patrick, worldrenowned 

designer and one of the Bay Area’s most popular 

instructors, will once again be the primary instructor of 

this exciting and rewarding program. A Filoli Home Floral 

Design Program Certificate of Completion is awarded to 

students who complete all three core classes listed below 

and two enrichment lectures or workshops of their choosing.

In this informative workshop participants will learn what to 

plant for a stunning display of color. Learn what Filoli does 

to insure its summer extravaganza of blooms. Everyone will 

plant a summer pot to take home for further growth and 

enjoyment. Summer is also the time to prune those spring 

flowering shrubs such as weigela, viburnum and old English 

roses. A garden walk and pruning demonstration will also be 

included in this NEW summer workshop.

Learn how to care for your roses year round from the

Painted Floor Cloths

Floor cloths originated in France in the 1400s and were 

introduced to the American colonies in the early 1700s. 

Originally made from recycled ship sails, they were used to 

cover dirt or wooden floors and later, because of their vibrant 

colors, these hand-painted canvases were used as art in 

parlors, bedrooms and hallways. Floor cloths can be seen in 

historic homes throughout the United States, particularly on 

the East coast. Students in this workshop will design and paint 

their own canvas to coordinate with their home furnishings.

Nature Education 

We know you love being at Filoli. Do you also love 

nature and being outdoors? If so, become a Nature 

Education Docent. Learn about plants, animals, their 

habitats and interconnectedness from a wonderful, 

local naturalist. And then, share the joys of nature 

with children in our community! 

Nature Education docents lead groups of 5-6 school 

children on 2-hour, 2-3 mile hikes on beautiful trails 

in the undeveloped area of Filoli. Docents are asked 

to lead two hikes per month during the school year. 

Training begins in the fall. To have fun, get exercise, 

and awaken the appreciation of nature in children, 

contact us at NatureEd@filoli.org. 

Café at Filoli 

Enjoy being around food and serving guests? 

Café volunteers serve food to Filoli guests both 

indoors and on the patio. The activity includes 

making coffee and iced tea, stocking condiments, 

plasticware, and snack items, setting up food 

baskets and food cases, wrapping bars and cookies, 

operating a cash register, clearing food items at 

end of day, putting all refrigerated food in proper 

containers and preparing the Café for the next day in 

compliance with Health Department standards. Onthe-job 

training is provided. Volunteers are asked to 

work a four-hour shift on either the first, third and 

fifth or second and fourth weeks of the month. The 

shifts are from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 12:00 pm to 

4:00 pm. 

Tour Office 

Greet guests, answer phones, give information, sell 

admission tickets and book reservations to Filoli 

events are the services that Tour Office (Visitor 

Services) volunteers provide. Volunteers are taught 

to run the computer-based booking system. For 

volunteers who prefer not to use the computer, 

your help is welcomed in answering the phone, 

giving information and selling tickets. Most of the 

activities are indoors. Occasionally, in good weather, 

tickets are sold outdoors. The commitment is 2 to 

4 three-hour shifts per month. Volunteers, who can 

commit once a month, especially on a Saturday, are 

welcome. Shifts are from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 

12:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

July 007 Coach Adventure 

Thursday, July 26 

9:00 am departs from Filoli’s parking lot 

For our July Adventure we will board a Royal Coach 

and ride south on Highway 101 through the Santa Clara 

Valley, across the coastal range to the ocean and to the 

unique village of Carmel. There we will have time for a leisurely stroll around 

the town to window shop, actually shop, breathe the ocean air, and enjoy 

the ambiance of this special place. Just a few minutes to enjoy the beach is 

worth the walk. By then we will be ready for lunch. Our bus will take us to 

Highlands Inn, a short drive south. A fine lunch can be expected, made even 

more special by being served in the SURF ROOM with its spectacular view of 

the cliffs and ocean. After lunch, weather and time permitting, we will return 

to Filoli via dramatic Highway 1. 

The price of this Adventure is $75.00, which includes transportation, lunch, 

taxes and tips. Alcoholic beverages are optional and not included. This event 

is intended for Filoli volunteers and one guest only, please. 

August 007 Coach Adventure 

Friday, August 31

This Friday (not the usual Thursday) Adventure will take us to the Mission 

District to visit the 2007 San Francisco Idea House. Sunset Magazine, in a 

joint venture with Meridian Builders & Developers, Inc., has created an Idea 

House for the first time in a dense urban area to demonstrate how to maximize 

construction on a compact site. This old house has been extensively remodeled 

by a LEED team (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), as one of 

the first certified remodeled homes in the nation. Key features in the threestory 

remodeled home include a spa and exercise space which opens onto a 

patio for entertainment, a dramatic glass and steel staircase, and an urban roof 

garden atop the garage. 

We will have lunch at The Grand Café in the Hotel Monaco on Geary Street in 

San Francisco. The menu features exceptional California-French bistro fare, 

under the supervision of highly-regarded Chef Fabrice Roux. 

The price of this Coach Adventure will be $75.00. This includes transportation, 

admission, lunch, taxes and tips. Alcoholic beverages are extra. This Adventure 

is intended for Filoli Volunteers and one guest only, please.

Admission: Adults $12, students $5 (ages 5 

through 17 or with valid student ID); children 

under 5 are free. Group rates are available for 

groups of 12 or more adults. Additional fees 

in effect on special event days. Admission 

includes self-guided or docent-led guided 

tours and, on Saturdays, nature hikes (see 

below). Filoli is wheelchair-accessible on the 

first floor of the house and in some areas of 

the garden. Filoli does not provide wheelchairs. 

Please inquire at Visitor Services for the best 

tour route for wheelchairs. 

Guided Tours: Available by advance 

reservation, Tuesdays - Saturdays. Tours last 

two hours and are led by a docent through both 

the house and garden. Contact Visitor Services 

for times and availability. 

Self-guided Tours: Offered during operating 

hours. No reservations are required. A map 

is available for your self-guided tour and 

volunteers are present in both the house and 

garden to answer questions. There is also a 

continuous 15-minute video in the Visitor and 

Education Center on the history of Filoli. 

Guided Nature Hikes: Available by advance 

reservation, on Saturdays at 10:00 am. The

docents describe wildlife, plants, endangered
