In tough economic times, having the right strategy
in business is not enough. Major Matt Tracy, a
Marine combat veteran of Kosovo,
Afghanistan, and Iraq leads a discussion
based on Sun Tzu’s “Art of War” and
the Marine Corps Doctrinal Philosophy
“Warfi ghting.” Major Tracy discusses
the synchronization of leadership
and strategy and the scalable model
utilized by the Marine Corps to win
every conflict large or small. An
essential key to business success
is improving the speed, accuracy
and discipline of your company’s
decision-making. By developing quality leaders
and implementing a leadership philosophy you can
improve your organization’s overall performance
without adding additional staff.
The discussion will begin with a description of
the Leadership Ideal and how to develop it within
yourself and your subordinates. This is drawn
from the Marine Corps traits and principles
while reinforced by anecdotes from 11 years of
Marine Corps Fleet Service. The second half
of the discussion utilizes the leadership ideal
to articulate a framework to win in higher level
strategic competitions.

Matt Tracy received the 2003 Marine
Corps Association Leadership Award
for his work Commanding the Reaction
Force of Chemical, Biological, High
Yield Explosive Incident Response
Force (CBIRF). In 2007 Major
Tracy was awarded the Leftwich
Trophy for Commanding Echo
Company 2d Battalion, 3d Marines
in Hadithah Iraq. The Leftwich
Trophy for Outstanding Leadership
is an award presented annually in
memory of Lieutenant Colonel William Groom
Leftwich, U.S. Marine Corps, killed in action
in the Republic of Vietnam in 1970. It is the
Marine Corps equivalent of the MVP in baseball
or the Heisman Trophy in college football.

President
One of the more interesting aspects of being the Chicago Chapter
President is working with other Chapters and FEI National to ensure
that our members needs are being met. As of this writing, I can assure
you that FEI is in the process of taking a fresh look at how our members
are being served, and the way they are being served. Our new
National President, Marie Hollein (Chicago’s own), has been reaching
out to the FEI community and has instituted major evaluation processes
to take a fresh look at the needs and desires of our members and how
they are being addressed. Stay tuned for further information as the
year unfolds.
However, I am curious as to your ideas about the Chapter. I am mindful
of a quote (source unknown) that says: “If you are not getting better,
you are getting worse.” We need your input to ensure that the Chapter
is meeting your needs. Toward that end, we will be surveying our members
this Spring to get your thoughts on how we can enhance our suite of
services to Chapter members. Specifi cally, we implemented a number of
ideas such as our Power Leadership Breakfast Meetings in several locations
on the same day and New Member Breakfasts with an outside speaker to
supplement our Monthly PD and Dinner Meetings. Did these work for you
and what else should we be doing? That is what we hope to fi nd out in our
Spring survey.
I think that reviewing what you do is a healthy exercise. One organization
that does it repeatedly is the U.S. Military. They perform a hard review of
every completed military exercise with the express purpose of looking at
what worked, what didn’t and how to improve. I think that this is a healthy
process and one that helps us learn and grow. It is for this reason, and the
other aspects of situational leadership, that we set up a breakfast session
on May 12th so you can hear Major Matt Tracy, USMC, talk about the
leadership challenges he faced in Iraq and how he addressed them. How he
took care of the people that were assigned to him should be of particular
interest to us as fi nancial leaders. We hope you join us.
On the 12th of June we are fortunate to have Ann Ziegler, CFO of CDW
Corporation speak at a luncheon on the subject of: “Is the Grass Greener--
Private vs. Public Company CFO.”
You are encouraged to invite prospective members to attend either of these
events at no charge by contacting the FEI Chapter Offi ce to register.
Lastly, special thanks to our Offi cers and Directors for the hard work
they put in this past year. Without the assistance of such dedicated people
we could not provide the level of service and assistance to our members
that we have grown accustomed to. Although I think “it is better to give
than receive” it sure feels great to receive the gifts of our Offi cers and
Directors.

CHICAGO CHAPTER GOLF OUTING – FRIDAY, JUNE 19
Plans for the FEI Chicago Chapter Golf Outing are in “full swing.” Join us
for a fantastic day at Willow Crest Golf Club at the Oak Brook Hills Marriott
Resort in Oak Brook. We’ve planned a shotgun start and will play a scramble
format, where each player tees off on each hole, the best shot is then selected
and all play from that selected spot and so on until the ball is holed. This type
of play caters to all skill levels and “Duffers” are welcomed!
The day starts at 7:00am with registration, a “grab and go” breakfast and
putting. Our shotgun start begins at 8am for a round of 18 in a spectacular
natural setting that makes for an unforgettable golf experience! The
afternoon ends with a BBQ lunch, networking and the presentation of
team and hole prizes.
A registration form is included with this newsletter. Plan your own foursome
or let us do it for you. Enjoy the camaraderie of the day’s events with your

SAVE THE DATE – RAVINIA OUTING
Mark your calendar for FEI Chicago’s Annual Ravinia Outing to be held
Sunday, July 12. This popular event allows you to connect with fellow FEI
members and their families, have a wonderful time and hear some great
music. The concert, which begins at 5pm, features the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra playing an all Tchaikovsky program including: Violin Concerto in
D Major, Op. 35; Nutcracker Suite No.1; and the “1812” Festival Overture,
Op. 49 (with live cannons). We will also plan an optional dinner following
the concert (around 7pm). Plan on joining us for a great evening!

business failure and growth began in the 1990s, and encompasses
over 800 case studies. “Create Marketplace Disruption: How
to Stay Ahead of the Competition” was published by Financial

Senior Vice President & CFO of CDW Corporation, on Friday,

Tower, Chicago. Ann will speak on “Is the Grass Greener--Private
vs. Public Company CFO.”
Ann Ziegler currently serves as Senior Vice President, Chief
Financial Officer and Executive Committee Member of CDW,
a leading provider of technology products and services for
business, government and education. Ziegler is responsible
for fi nancial planning and analysis, accounting, treasury, tax,
risk management and internal audit. Ann joined the company in
2008, bringing her extensive experience as a fi nancial executive
to the management team at CDW. Prior to joining CDW she
held a number of executive positions with Sara Lee where she
served as Chief Financial Offi cer and Senior Vice President of
administration for Sara Lee Food & Beverage.
Ziegler earned a bachelors degree in Economics from the College
of William and Mary and a law degree from University of Chicago
Law School. Ann also serves on the Board of Directors of
Unitrin, Inc., the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, and the Harvard
Women’s Leadership Board and is a member of the American
Bar Association, the Economic Club of Chicago, the Chicago
Finance Exchange and The Chicago Network.
