FACT SHEET – LONHRO COSTA COMPLETE COLT
Horse: A Lonhro - Costa Complete bay or brown yearling colt purchased
at the 2012 Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast is being
offered by Delbridge Racing for syndication. This colt is a well
conformed yearling by last season’s champion sire, Lonhro. He
is already well developed physically but also has good scope for
further growth and should develop into a very strong and
powerful racehorse. He is developed enough to be a potential
early runner but we expect him to be at his best as he matures.
He has Group 1 winners on both sides of his bloodlines. His sire
Lonhro was an outstanding racehorse winning 11 Group 1 races
and 26 of his 35 races. Lonhro is already proving himself to be a
successful sire already siring Group 1 winners BEADED,
BENIFICA and DENMAN. His dam, Costa Complete, was a five
time winner and is by the group 1 winner and champion sire
Encosta de Lago.
Sire: LONHRO – OCTAGONAL – SHADEA (STRAIGHT STRIKE)
Before the majestic mare Black Caviar there was another ‘Black
Flash’ on the Australian racing scene, former champion
racehorse turned champion stallion Lonhro who claimed the
2010-11 Australian Sire of the Year award for the first time since
retiring to stud seven years ago.
By winning the 2011 Stradbroke Handicap, Benfica became the
third Lonhro progeny to win a Group 1 in Australia with a breakthrough
Group 1 win in the $500,000 T.J. Smith (1600m).
This was the second elite level success for Lonhro in the space
of two weeks after his daughter, the fellow Snowden-trained
Beaded, scored a gritty final-stride victory in the Group 1
Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on May 28.
Beaded and Benfica join Denman as the first three Group 1
winners for Lonhro, the prolific sire also having produced a trio of
both Group 2 and Group 3 winners.
A winner of 26 of his 35 starts during his impressive track career
including 11 Group 1 victories, the former John Hawkes-trained
Octagonal horse Lonhro never lost more than two races on the
trot and since retiring to serve at stud has been able to produce
similarly sensational results off the turf.
Originally standing at his place of birth, Woodlands Stud, beside
his sire Octagonal, Lonhro’s opening service fee was $66,000 –
a local record for a stallion’s first season.
After Woodlands was sold out to Sheikh Mohammad’s Darley
Stud, Lonhro has been based at their Aberdeen base in New
South Wales were he serves alongside his well-performing son
from his second crop, 2009 Golden Rose winner Denman.
Last spring Lonhro stood at a fee of $77,000 (inc. GST) following
his stand-out results during last season.
Lohnro is a grandson of Zabeel, the outstanding stallion son of
Sir Tristram, and just as his sire, Octagonal, was the most
outstanding runner sired by Zabeel, Lonhro was the outstanding
son of Octagonal. A graded winner at 2, 3, 4 and 5, and from
1200 to 2000m., Lonhro won 26 of his 35 starts, including the
Australian Cup (gr. I), Queen Elizabeth Stakes (gr. I), George
Main Stakes (gr. I), L.K.S. Mackinnon Stakes (gr. I), two
renewals each of the Caulfield Stakes (gr. I), and George Ryder
Stakes (gr. I), the C. F. Orr Stakes (gr. I), and Chipping Norton
Stakes (gr. I). The Australian Horse of the Year for 2004-2005,
he was also World Champion Middle Distance Horse of 2004.
In addition to being a grandson of New Zealand-based Zabeel,
Lonhro also had a New Zealand flavour to the distaff side of the
pedigree. His dam, Shadea, winner of the Sweet Embrace
Stakes (gr. III), and runner-up in the AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes
(gr. I) and ACJ Champagne Stakes (gr. I), is a daughter of the
very successful New Zealand stallion, Straight Strike (by Mr.
Prospector out of a Never Bend mare). In addition to to Lonhro,
she’s also dam of that horse’s three-time grade one winning
brother Niello, and granddam of Octagonal’s graded winning
daughter Diamond Deck. The family has had a marked affinity
with Zabeel’s sire Sir Tristram, including the AJC Oaks (gr. I)
heroine, Mahaya, out of Lonhro’s second dam, and the
outstanding runner and successful sire, Grosvenor, out of his
third dam.
Ultimately, his first crop, foals of 2005 produced no less than
eight stakes winners, including the graded scorers O’Lonhro,
Renaissance, and Beaded. In the second crop came the grade
one winning Denman – who is also now set for a stallion career –
graded winners Trim, Demerit, and Deer Valley, and four other
stakes winners. Lonhro’s third crop, foals of 2007 are headed by
graded winners Parables and Obsequious, among a quintet of
stakes winners.
Lonhro was a champion on the racetrack and is already heading
towards being a champion as a sire.
Dam: The colt is the first foal from COSTA COMPLETE and she was a
5 time winner by the champion racehorse and sire ENCOSTA
DE LAGO. She was an early type running second in 4 races as a
2-y-old before training on to win 5 races including at city class.
Her dam Strawberry Fields is a half-sister to stakes winners from
1400 to 2400 metres.
Trainer: Jason Warren will train this Lonhro colt at Mornington, VIC.
Jason is one of the most promising young trainers in Australia
and trains one of Australia’s best sprinters, Bel Sprinter
Jason Warren grew up in the Bega valley area and has worked
with horses most of his life. After starting off at shows and
events, and riding track work an Ballina, Jason moved to Victoria
and worked for Eliza Park (riding work and breaking in horses).
After a couple of years with Eliza Park Jason took out a trainers’
license in his own right, and started training, pre-training and
breaking in horses as his own man (on a property on Stumpy
Gulley Rd, just minutes from Denistoun Park).
Jason then decided that he wanted to further his knowledge of
training, and went to champion trainer Lee Freedman becoming
his foreman during the time that Makybe Diva reigned supreme.
His time with Freedman racing also included Benicio winning the
VRC Derby and Serenade Rose winning the VRC Oaks. At that
time Denistoun Park served as the Freedman's pre-training
property.
In 2006, with increased knowledge and experience, Jason
purchased Denistoun Park and now has up to 52 horses in work
(education, pre-training and full training). At only 35yo Jason is
young, driven, passion and totally committed to racing success.
Future: This colt has been selected with city and group races in mind.
Delbridge Racing syndicated horses are well bred and well
conformed horses and we seek to buy yearlings that represent
value for money. This yearling has been selected as a potential
2-y-old runner but he will be at his prime from his 3-y-old season
and beyond. We give our horses’ time to mature and develop
and our horses usually race as late 2-y-olds or early 3-y-olds as
we do not push them before they are ready thus ensuring they
reach their maximum potential and have a long and successful
racing career.
Ownership: There are 5% and 10% shares available in this colt. All 10%
share owners will be able to have their names in the racebook.
The purchase price for a 5% share will be $6,040 including GST
and a 10% share will be $12,080 including GST. The purchase
price includes all purchase costs and all transport, training,
agistment, buying, syndication and establishment costs until 30
June 2012. It also includes insurance until April 2013.
