FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH International Marketing of the Region enjoyed another successful year in 

2011. With our help, 29 companies settled in the FrankfurtRheinMain region during the year. The year 

of 2012 is also getting off to a fast start with the opening of the international real-estate trade fair 

MIPIM scheduled for the beginning of March in Cannes, France. For this purpose, we have issued a new 

brochure of currently available commercial sites in our region. You can download it from our web site. 

Reflecting this busy start to the year, we have just opened our new office in India. Ms Disha Shah will 

promote the FrankfurtRheinMain region from her base in Pune and expand the network of our 

customers across India. 

Even before this year began, we received some rewarding news: The FRM web portal frankfurt-rheinmain.net 

won a DDC design award in December.

About us 

Getting closer to the customer: new office in Pune, India 

FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH International Marketing of the Region opened a 

representative office in India on 1st February. Ms Disha Shah, Director India, is running 

the office co-located with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce in the city of Pune. 

Thanks to this new office, the FrankfurtRheinMain region will gain further exposure in 

India, will be closer to customers and will bring new intensity and life to our networks in 

this thriving market.

Successful year for FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH 

FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH International Marketing of the Region can look 

back on a successful year 2011. A total of 29 international companies set up 

operations in FrankfurtRheinMain region with the agency‟s assistance. More 

than 50% of these new investors came from China. U.S. companies also 

showed great interest. “These results clearly show just how important the 

work of our international offices is. They enable us to make our first contacts 

in United States and China,” said Dr. Hartmut Schwesinger, President and CEO of FrankfurtRheinMain 

GmbH International Marketing of the Region.

An interview with Linhard Stepf, President of FrankfurtRhineMain Corp. (USA) 

The editor of the newsletter talked with Linhard Stepf, our representative in 

Chicago, about the three most important selling points for American 

investors and the issues being discussed by American business partners at 

the moment. 

Mr Stepf, what kind of things are your American friends and business 

partners currently discussing? 

Germany is mentioned a lot in private and business conversations these days: Americans admire the 

way we quickly emerged from the recession, our low unemployment rate and our apparent financial 

ability to "save all of Europe". "How do you guys in Germany do it?" is a question I‟m frequently asked. 

On the flip side, they worry that the ongoing instability in Europe will negatively impact the slow

Pixomondo a Frankfurt-based visual effects company received the Oscar for visual effects at the award 

ceremony held on 26 February in Los Angeles. Pixomondo provided all of the film‟s visual effects used 

in the 3-D film "Hugo Cabret". The company says its global network delivered 98 percent of the digital 

images used in the film.

Taiwan: Frankfurt office is being upgraded 

The Frankfurt office of the Taipei Diplomatic Mission in the Federal Republic of Germany now has both 

a consulate and a department of trade. The department is responsible for Hesse, Baden-Württemberg 

and Bavaria. In addition, the consulate in Frankfurt is responsible for North Rhine-Westphalia, 

Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Hesse.

New Money Transfer to India 

The Frankfurt branch of ICICI Bank UK PLC has introduced a new online service, www.money2india.eu 

that enables efficient money transfers to India for individuals living in Europe. This service is a webbased 

online remittance platform which facilitates remittances from various „EURO‟ countries to 

beneficiaries in India. Further, this service offers competitive exchange rates, NO processing fees or 

service charges, faster processing time and dedicated toll free telephone support. „Money2India Europe‟ 

can facilitate transfer from any bank in Europe to any bank in India. This service is offered in all 17

Interview: Win-win thanks to network 

For dual-career couples, creating a work-life balance is something 

of a high-wire act. The Dual Career Service at Goethe University in 

Frankfurt is a service for international academics that is designed to 

increase the allure of the FrankfurtRheinMain region. The 

newsletter spoke with Ms Marlar Kin, Coordinator of the Dual 

Career Service at Goethe University in Frankfurt. 

Dual Career Service Website 

Ms Kin, can you briefly tell us what the university’s Dual Career Service is all about? 

The service helps spouses and partners of newly appointed professors at the university find a 

professional position in the region. Over and over again, the world-class academics we want to attract 

to the university have turned down our offer because they did not want to sink the careers of their 

partners. Helping the partner find a position increases the drawing power of Frankfurt and the 

surrounding region. After all, the service gives a career boost to both partners. And the need is there 

because there are increasing numbers of dual-career couples who are determined to have their own 

separate professional careers. The service also helps create a better work-life balance. 

Do you also keep the FrankfurtRheinMain region in mind? 

To provide optimal support to our dual-career partners, we network with other organisations that also 

want to use this instrument to improve their recruiting efforts. We launched our network with about 

20 other universities and research institutes in the region because they work in much the same way as 

we do. But about half of our dual-career “cases” work in business, not in academia. For this reason, we 

are increasingly working with companies that also want to use this opportunity to recruit highly 

qualified experts and executives who would not be seeking employment in the region if their partners

were not moving to a position at the university in Frankfurt. As a result, the service helps not only the 

university, but also other employers who can recruit the other partner who is coming along for the 

ride, so to speak. In the end, the region gains two highly qualified people. 

Are you looking right now for a position for someone? 

I am always acting as a “door opener” and helping several people find a professional home here. Right 

now, I am working with a person who has very extensive experience in international political and 

cultural partnerships. The focal point is China, where the person studied and worked for long and 

repeated periods of time. This individual also has a good understanding of Eastern Europe and Russia. 

As a rule, I frequently work with dual-career partners who have a lot of international experience and 

extensive knowledge of foreign languages.

As I said earlier, we are delighted when other organisations want to tap the potential of dual career

Still interest in strictly regulated Prime Standard 

Ultrasonic AG (China) joined the Prime Standard of the regulated market on the Frankfurt Stock 

Exchange last December. Ultrasonic was founded in 1998 in Fujian and produces high-quality brand 

shoes for the Chinese market. To date, 37 Chinese companies have made an initial public offering in 

Frankfurt, nine of them in the Prime Standard, one in the General Standard, six in the Entry Standard 

and 21 in the Open Market.

Bergstraße: Indo-German Film Agency at the Berlinale 2012 

The Indo-German Film Agency, a service office for international and German film producers that works 

to promote the Bergstraße area as a filming location, was busy once again at the 62nd international 

film festival in the German capital of Berlin. A networking lunch was part of this effort. The lunch was 

organised by the Film Commission Hessen/Hessen Film Fund and the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan 

Region Film Commission in cooperation with the Indo-German Film Agency, a project of 

Wirtschaftsförderung Bergstraße GmbH. Once again, important decision-makers of the film making 

industry were invited to discuss the latest trends in the film business and to make interesting contacts.

Investment seminar of FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH in Shenyang, 7 September 2011 

The local partner of this investment seminar was the Department 

of Foreign Capital and Overseas Investment of the Liaoning 

Reform and Development Commission and the Shenyang Industry 

and Commerce Federation. About 50 representatives of Chinese 

companies and about 20 government officials attended the event.

Commerce Darmstadt, the Taylor Wessing law firm, XF Steuerberatungsgesellschaft mbH, Deutsche 

Börse AG, the Graf von Westphalen law firm and Shenyang Machine Tools Group, a Frankfurt investor 

supported by FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH. These partners talked about their services and their 

experiences related to Chinese investments in Germany. FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH conducted several 

discussions with potential investors, enabling them to learn about the strengths of the region. 

The Chinese business community in FrankfurtRheinMain 

Design award for the Web portal Frankfurt-Rhein-Main.net 

The innovative design of the Web portal of FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH 

was presented on 9 December 2011 with the design award “Gute 

Gestaltung 12” that is sponsored by the German Design Club (DDC). Since 

the second quarter of 2010, the portal has been continuously expanded 

and regularly adds new information about the FrankfurtRheinMain 

region. The shareholders of FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH and partners from 

the region regularly take advantage of the opportunity to contribute their 

own content. As a complement to FRM Magazine, the portal includes 

both the articles published in the magazine and news about the entire region.

Go4Europe, Tel Aviv, Israel, 31 October 2011 

FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH was part of one of Israel‟s most popular conferences focusing on strategic 

partnerships and capital flows between European and Israeli companies, Go4Europe. This gathering 

gave our representatives an opportunity to tell highly regarded Israeli companies about the strengths 

of the business region.

15th China International Fair for Investment & Trade, Xiamen, 7-9 September 2011 

Once again, FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH had an information stand at last year‟s German Pavilion 

sponsored by Germany Trade and Invest. In addition to FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH, the location 

marketing organisations of the German states of Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine- 

Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Bremen and Lower Saxony were represented. FrankfurtRheinMain 

was also an active participant in the China-Germany Economic Cooperation Seminar. At a 

matchmaking event, several discussions with potential investors were conducted, enabling them to 

learn about the strengths of the region.

Automotive Breakfast Seminar, Frankfurt, 16 September 2011 

We drive your business 

More than 50 national and international guests attended the 

automotive breakfast seminar “eMobility: Shaping the Future” 

during the International Motor Show held in mid-September in 

Frankfurt. The guests learned about the automotive region‟s 

strengths and were able to conduct interesting discussions in the 

networking session that followed. Among the participants was also 

Lord Mayor Horst Schneider of Offenbach.

China Yangzhou World Canal Cities Expo, 25-27 September 2011 

At the invitation of the Office for International Affairs of the city of 

Yangzhou, FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH participated for the second time in this 

festival. At the first Global Design Cities Forum attended by about 100 

decision makers, Mr Dörr, a member of the business-development office of the 

city of Offenbach, talked about a port project in the city. Afterwards, Mr Roth 

(Director China in Shanghai) discussed the related investment opportunities 

for Chinese companies in the region and introduced the visitors to the services 

and branch offices of FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH.

Vice Minister of Commerce Chen Jian in Düsseldorf on 26 September 2011 

At the invitation of the Chinese General Consulate (Frankfurt) the Head of Global Marketing, Sibylle 

Yaakov, joined a roundtable discussion with Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce CHEN Jian in 

Düsseldorf. About 35 people, roughly half of whom represented Frankfurt based companies, attended 

the discussion.

KGCCI 30th anniversary gala dinner, Korea, 9 November 2011 

The Korean-German Chamber of Commerce & Industry celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala 

dinner on November 9 in the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul. FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH attended the 

celebration and invited selected high-ranking representatives of Korean companies and institutions to 

sit at two FrankfurtRheinMain tables. The honorary guest of the evening was Mr Hay Keong Yang, the

long-time European head of Samsung, the bearer of the German Cross of Merit, the Chairman of the 

Korea Economy Council in Europe and the Honorary Chairman of the Korea Economy and Business

India Film & Pharma Promotion 2011 

From 20-27 November 2011, FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH 

International Marketing of the Region organised the India Film 

& Pharma Promotion 2011 under the leadership of Horst 

Schneider, Lord Mayor of Offenbach and a member of the 

Supervisory Board of FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH. For the film 

industry, a reception with a networking dinner was held in 

Mumbai, and a film investment seminar was conducted during 

the film festival. The visit of the film festival in Goa served as an 

opportunity to provide further exposure to the filming location 

FrankfurtRheinMain. The film events reached about 60 decision-makers from the film industry and 

served as a platform to promote the region‟s strengths. The road show was complemented by events 

regarding pharmaceuticals, one of India‟s strongest and fastest growing industries.

CSCMP Global Annual Global Conference (2011 and 2012) 

Acting on the initiative of our Chicago office, the House of 

Logistics & Mobility (HOLM) and Hessen Agentur joined an 

information booth at this leading U.S. logistics trade fair, which 

was attended by 3,000 people. The joint information booth gave 

visitors an opportunity to get to know Europe‟s No.1 logistics 

location and the HOLM at the Frankfurt International Airport. At the same time, the region was 

promoted as the site of the CSCMP Europe 2012 Conference (23.-25. April 2012 in Frankfurt a. M.). The

conference will be held for the first time in Frankfurt as a result of the initiative of 

FrankfurtRhineMain Corp. in Chicago.

FRM Christmas market, 1 December 2011, Frankfurt 

On 1 December 2011, Wirtschaftsinitiative RheinMain e.V. joined 

FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH in inviting guests to its annual Christmas 

party held in the outdoor section of the Unterschweinstiege 

restaurant. Many people from international companies and partners 

accepted the invitation and enjoyed “Glühwein” and gospel music 

while discussing the past and coming financial year.

TiE kick-off event on 1 December 2011, Frankfurt 

FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH International Marketing of the Region was the co-sponsor of the kick-off 

event for the German chapter of the global non-profit entrepreneurs‟ organisation TiE, The Indus 

Entrepreneurs, on 1 December 2011 in Frankfurt. TiE provides support to Indian business start-ups 

around the world by helping set up networks, providing consulting services and offering training. With 

the German affiliate, TiE now has chapters in 14 countries around the world with more than 13,000 

members. The event was attended by about 120 managers and companies from an array of industries. 

The partnership between FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH and TiE will ensure that start-ups in the 

FrankfurtRheinMain region receive support.

Commercial Sites in FrankfurtRheinMain 

Just in time for the international real-estate trade fair at the 

beginning of March in Cannes, France, FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH cooperated 

with representatives of the region in producing the english 

publication “Commercial Sites in FrankfurtRheinMain.” It provides 

informative insights into this exceptional region and presents 

commercial sites that are currently available to companies and 

investors. Interviews with some key players of the region provide 

additional insights. On page 46, you will also learn more about the 

Green Towers of Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt.

First Taiwan-Singapore-Day, 3 December 2011, Wetterau 

FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH International Marketing of the Region organised the first Taiwan- 

Singapore Day on 3 December. The event proved to be quite popular as it was attended by more than 

80 managers and their families, employees of government institutions and the owners of private 

Taiwanese companies. Both young and old enjoyed visiting the model railroad station in Stockheim, the 

tour of Büdingen and the Christmas luncheon. The event was supported by Wirtschaftsförderung 

Wetterau GmbH. It enabled more intense networking with representatives of the Taiwanese 

community.

FrankfurtRheinMain in Davos 

On the occasion of the World Economic Forum 2012, the 

evening reception FRANKFURT meets DAVOS was held for the 

fourth time. The hosts were, once again, the Maleki Group, 

Deutsche Börse AG, FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH, the Chamber of 

Trade and Industry in Frankfurt am Main and the City of 

Frankfurt am Main. The gathering was held on 26 January 2012 

in the Steigenberger Hotel Belvédère Davos. About 300 business 

and political leaders learned about the strengths of the region 

as an international business location and conducted interesting discussions.
