No Bombs, but Expectorations
Maybe Mike Fridge and Richard Murray have not had nail
bombs delivered in the Post - as Celtic manager Neil
Lennon did recently, but we still have our share of nutters
around
Recent wild actions on the park highlight the need
for personal discipline if a player wants to do the best for his
team and club. Bad enough a set of stud marks in the
chest, but also for referees to be spat on - does no credit to
local Football.
Spare a thought for Match officials who do a
thankless job. Referees do not benefit financially from
yellow and red cards – they are not tax collectors in disguise.
And as Club Treasurers well know - cautions and send offs have financial
consequences for players and clubs. Under Regulation 7 of New Zealand Football
there are standard fines, which shall be imposed by all federations: $25 for a
caution, and $50 for a send off and an automatic one playing day suspension.
For violent conduct including spitting at an opponent or match officials the
player automatically gets 2 days suspension and a fine $50 for each playing day
suspended. In these circumstances players may also have to appear before a
Disciplinary Committee.
A player who accumulates 5
cautions during the season is
automatically stood down for one playing
day and, if you get sent off for a second
yellow, the two cautions count towards
the 5 plus the one-day suspension for the
red card.
A suspension is a ban from taking
part in a future match or competition and
attending it in the area immediately
surrounding the field of play including the
technical areas and the dressing rooms.
So there.. and Expectorations ?
Used to feature on Edinburgh public
‘Spit him out, Wayne ! This is just
practice. Save the rough stuff for
the real match.’
Burgee Lights It Up At Tahuna
Bit of
Our boys travelled to Tonga Park for a top Burgie of the table encounter with
Caversham, and by the final whistle Technical leads style the FPL by a clear four point
margin
Caversham scored first with a well taken shot past young Michael
Walker, we immediately struck back with a fine goal by Judder.
Into the second half we took control of the game and finished the
stronger with goals by Coby and Burgee. Coach Fridge given the luxury of
emptying the bench towards the end.
It was very disappointing that the game was played on such a
substandard pitch, to hear that players had to cut the grass themselves on Friday
night seems
unbelievable.
Next
week we say fair
well to Coby,
he has been a
fantastic servant
to us and we are
hoping for a big
crowd to witness
his last game
which will be
against Grants
Braes at Tahuna
- get along to
The Prems clinically dispatched Grants Braes 5 zip at
Ocean Grove. After a good performance last week Wal and
TVG would have stressed the importance of backing up
week in week out and the lads delivered.
First half goals from goal a game Govan and the
Ginga Messi put us in firm control at half time. With the
keeper out of position Messi bent his shot around the keepr
to the far past with great skill, but most punters behind the
goal were wondering why he didn’t just roll it in the near post.
Second half saw Roslyn dominant, a superbly
executed training ground move saw Sam guide in Ajay’s
excellent free-kick. Wal provide a master stroke bring Mike
Still on who scored a great goal with his first touch,
reminding some of the old faithful of one of Roslyn’s greatest
goal scorers Barry Still.
Grants Braes frustration showed with arguably their best player sent off for what
was a rash challenge at best, although the game was generally played in good spirit.
Roslyn pushed for more goals and got one when the Ginga Messi was involved again
when he earned a pen after being down was hauled down after round his man.
Ajay stepped up and emphatically smashed the pen home. I missed speeches
so missed who man of the match was, James again played well upfront, the back four
Frodo, Captain Caveman, Sam and TC were class. My pick was Ajay though who slotted
into the middle of the park after a week off and along with Sam dominated the game.
Credit to Grants Braes who in patches knocked the ball around well and had a
never say die attitude which will no doubt reap rewards, and just for a change Kudos to
the Ref Hamish Philip who did his best to let the game flow.
Also good to see a large number of Roslyn Morts make the trek out to watch the
game which reminded me that preparations have begun in earnest (or is that Ernst) for
the club’s 125th Anniversary celebrations to be held at Queens Birthday weekend in
2013, watch this space. Giddy Up.
Golden Gloves Award - and its No’ Boxin’
FIFA has only recently added The Golden Glove award for
goalkeepers, and in fact may be the only football entity to
finally recognize a goalkeeper’s great worth. They are ones
who save their teams from sometimes total disaster. Maybe
Fsouth should have a Yellow Polo Award ?
Its worth thinking about
some top locals Jim Taylor, Lutz
Pfannenstiel, Neil Mackenzie, Rod
Renfrew, Grant Mawston, Gats
Urquart... all those guys with the
predatory gumshield jawlines..
coach Tony Boomer.
I’ve sprinkled a few pics here and on the next
page. If my battered body is found in an alley - it was probably the goalie I forgot.
Edwin van der Sar claimed the all-time British record of 1311 minutes
without conceding a goal. Here’s a few stars - and did you know when the great
Gordon Banks once played for Otago ? Blair Davidson will give you that
answer. Then there were the greats - Lev Yashin (USSR), Banks
(England), Peter Schmeichel (Denmark), Iker Casillas (Spain), Pat Jennings
(Northern Ireland), Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico), Ronnie Simpson ( Scotland), Petr
Cech, Shay Given, Ireland, and Rab Smith - yes I once went into goals.
Our keeper was injured, so at halftime I went between the sticks. My first
action was the Penalty awarded because our coach did not inform the Ref of the
change. Tsk, tsk, its not easy between the sticks.
With absolute fairness, I agree with Spirits Barry Gardiner, it
would have been cruel for either side to lose this match given
the absolute frustration and confusion both teams subjected to
over the 90 minutes.
While we started slow, Spirit were simply given too
much space to play, and perhaps should have gone ahead on
their own merits with more composed finishing, however it took a
penalty decision to give the home side the early lead, and noone
knows what the penalty was for…no-one….again….NO-
ONE knows.
This did however open the game up a bit with both
sides looking for ascendancy, and it wasn’t long before Matt
Small found himself a yard or two of space at the top of the box
and neatly tucked his shot top left corner for an equalizer.
Following shortly after was a Rovers team pressing high in
defense and finding the spirit error, Darren Mills pounced on some loose ball in the back
four, and quickly found himself with only the keeper to beat, which he did, ahead 2-1. We
climbed back into this match well and I think deserved our lead.
The 2nd half kind of repeated the first, spirit starting a bit sharper, while we again
wrestled some late ascendancy, sadly for us, a good save from Darren Hill in goals,
rebounded off the cross bar, only to be neatly tucked away by a spirit attacker. 2-2.
This match totally lacked control, while both teams went about their business,
eventually six players were cautioned.... But worse was to follow when a penalty was
disallowed for encroachment, and a goal kick awarded in lieu of a re-take… Extremely
hard to understand.
Nonetheless, a point in Invercargill, we’ll take it and look forward to whatever
challenge Mosgiel has for us next week, in what I know will be another fun afternoon!
Oh, and Rab, can we not mention the number eleven again?!, it’s officially a
cuss word in Queenstown now. ( agreed, Rab )
Referees, players and coaches make mistakes.
We are all human, and in the heat of a game referees cannot reach for the 54
pages of the Laws of the Game and the 82 pages of instructions to referees. Decisions
are made, mistakes are made, and we have to live with them. What we can do is ensure
that we learn from the mistakes as referees and hopefully not repeat them. It takes years
of practice.
We also want players and coaches to understand the game better, so to help in
that process “Ask a Referee a Question”. On the Footballsouth website under the
heading of Referees there will be a section where you can submit a question and
receive a reply based on the Laws. The questions and answers (minus the names of
those asking) will be printed in the weekly match programme if space permits.
So, what about that Penalty Kick in the Spirit v Queenstown game on Saturday,
23rd April? What happened?
A Penalty Kick correctly given for a foul by the defending team inside the penalty
area. The referee has not given the signal and before the ball is kicked and in play one of
the attacking players enters the penalty area. The Referee allows the kick to be taken
and if the ball enters the goal it is disallowed and the Penalty Kick is retaken – if the
goalkeeper had saved the goal play would be restarted with an indirect free kick to the
defending team.
In this game play restarted with a goal kick. That was wrong, but have a heart
for the decision making. How many of you would put yourself in the middle and be
prepared to make those calls?
There are no less than
thirteen (13) infringements that can
occur at the taking of a Penalty
Kick and restarts range from a
retake, to an indirect free kick, to a
corner kick, to a goal kick to a
dropped ball.
If only those 82 pages of
instructions were sitting in the back
pocket.
And yet it can be very
rewarding to attend a Basic
Refereeing Course, and make
that first step up the ladder -
I’m sorry but it’s got to be said that the ref in Saturday’s Spirit v Queenstown
game had a huge impact on the outcome and it was based on a couple of not-sogood
decisions.
It happens I guess, but when they affect the result as they did then even I
am moved to be just a little embarrassed.
Enough said though and the 2-2 draw wasn’t really what either team needed.
A win for either would have been well
deserved as Spirit for the most part played some
of their best football of the season, and grabbed
a couple of goals to boot.
While Queenstown certainly didn’t look
like a team that had conceded 11 goals a few
weeks ago.
Spirit unveiled its new signing for the
game and he duly got the POD award for the day.
Craig Ferguson, seen in pic right, he hails from
Perth, Scotland.
Well done to New Zealand Football for
organising the Aussie game on June the 5th the
day after Ricky Herbert will be speaking at the
Thistle Jubilee function in Invers.
Thistle got in first so I guess
the All-Whites assistant coach will have to take
over the reins in Adelaide….
yeah right.
It took 76 minutes and a sending off
before the Premier Men started to
turn on the type of attacking football
that they had failed to play up until
then.
Substitute Simon Wilkes scored
a great goal to draw the scores
level after Green Island had taken
the lead about 56 mins into the
game.
In that last 15 mins the game
opened up and became a frenetic
end to end struggle.
It would be fair to say that for the first 70 mins of the game the young
Green Island side not only held their own but forced Northern into mistake after
mistake and in general had the better of the game.
Overall it was a good
comeback for the 10 man
team and it was helped in no
small way with the MOM
performance by stand in
keeper Dave Henderson.
A good midfield debut
by Mike Arnold was helped
with good performances off
the bench by Tom McLean,
Simon Wilkes and Paulo
Timajo.
From the CEO....Whats happening in Footballsouth
“ Pathways for Referees are included in the NZF/Footballsouth Whole of Football
Plan. They are very much a part of growing the game, both from a quantity and a
quality point of view. We want to develop world class officials just as we want
world class coaches and players. Brent Best is a great local example of
someone who has reached world class as an Assistant Ref (AR).
How can you help?
· By volunteering - it may be a pathway for you !!
( contact Chris Boyd - Ref Dev Officer - see website for details )
· By encouraging . This publication will not accept negative comments on
referees performance. These should be forwarded to your Club, which will then
pass on to the appropriate officials in Footballsouth.
· Contributors to this magazine should quietly reflect on their choice of
words before committing to print - Better not to comment on Refereeing ( How
would you feel if the refs started criticising players and coaches in public?)
· Take your concerns up with the Refs in a positive manner
· Managers, coaches, players - take a disciplined approach to conduct
both on and off the field. We want to increase the recruitment and retention of
referees. Ideally, we would like officials for all games - both men and women.
ps Congrats to NZF for winning the Excellence in Innovation
Award, with their WOFP ( Wilson Whineray described it as world class ) at the
SPARC Annual Awards last week. “
NZ Plan wins Award
Bill Chisholm
Football’s development blueprint, the Whole of Football
Plan, has been recognised at New Zealand Sport and
Recreation Awards in Auckland by taking out the
Innovation Excellence category.
Based on internationally researched bestpractice
and tailored to New Zealand context, the
Whole of Football Plan has been designed to cover all
areas of the game, from volunteers, coaches and
referees, to social and elite players.
The plan will be rolled out over the next six
years with the junior framework piloted this season and
fully implemented in 2012. The youth and senior
frameworks will be piloted in 2013 and 2015 respectively before fully rolled out
the following season.
Describing the plan as a “world-class piece of work” the judging panel
chaired by Sir Wilson Whineray said the “Whole of Football Plan is re-inventing
the way football will be delivered to New Zealanders.”

‘Ask the Physio’
In my days we didn’t have hamstrings!!!!
There appears to have been a significant evolutionary
change in the past 20 years as football pundits that have
reached the half century seem not to have any hamstring
muscles!
Pulling a ‘hammie ‘ is very common in running sports. The
hamstring muscles run from the pelvis to the back of the
knee. The injury can range from a simple strain to a full
tear. The simple strain will recover in a few days however
the tear can put someone out for the season.
There are many causes for
hamstring injuries : back problems,
stretching out for a ball to sprinting and sprinting
injuries. Sprinting injuries tend to occur due to poor
timing between the quadriceps and hamstrings. So
therefore this may not be due to a lack of fitness.
Hamstring flexibility is important in football as the
player needs to be mobile. Having good strength is
also important. An early return to sport after an injury
without strengthening the hamstrings will result in re-injury so a good
strength programme is required.
Stretching ( see pics ) must be carried out regularly and not just before a
game so that good mobility is achieved. If you are unsure ask you physio for
a stretching and strengthening programme.game so that good mobility is
achieved. If you are unsure ask you physio for a stretching and
strengthening programme.
The Green Island Premier team drew 1-1 with Northern at Sunnyvale. Maybe
missed chances were the winner this week as both teams take a point and more
Japan
Against Mosgiel at Memorial park, The
home side started on the front foot and controlled
the tempo of the game while also creating the
better chances. However, our Brazilian keeper
Danniel Becheri was looking good in goal and
difficult to beat. That was until Mosgiel received a
free-kick just outside the left-hand side of the 18
yard box.
This year, our first two games were
officiated by Richard Roberts who performed
admirably. He was both competent and capable of
controlling the matches and, showed why in my
opinionhe is one of the best referees in the Otago
region.
However our match referee allowed the
ever-alert Mike McGarry to take a quick free-kick
while the offending Varsity player was being
cautioned, and thus at a time when a quick freekick
cannot be taken, (check the Rules Luke, Refs
advise that the attacking team has the right to take
the Kick quickly. This point will be covered in ASK
THE REF page on Fsouth website ).
I don’t want to take anything away from the good Mosgiel performance in the 1 st
half but such decisions have important impacts on the outcomes of matches. In fairness
though, Mosgiel certainly deserved their lead and went into the break 2-0 ahead after
Phil Kelly raced in behind our defence and slotted home despite being twice thwarted
by our keeper Becheri.
In terms of the Varsity performance, the team had completely gone away from
the fluent passing football that we had been so effective at playing in previous weeks.
Following a spirited half-time chat, the lads finally came out ready to play some football.
We held onto possession well and against a solid Mosgiel defence we were
able to create 2-3 good scoring chances.
With about 10-15 mins to go, our best opportunity of the game arose. Having
been played through by Wouts, Rathbone rattled the upright with a stinging shot that
was well saved by the Mosgiel keeper. Had we scored then it would have brought about
an interesting end to the game but as always Mike McGarry marshalled his team very
well and with Matt Brooks steady at the back, we weren’t able to break Mosgiel down.
Final Result: 2-0. Good performances by Stevie Blackmore, Josh Groom and
Yannick Wouts. MOTM: Zac Rathbone yet again – quality week in week out. Well done
to Mosgiel on a good win.
Mosgiel’s new Zimmer park was in
good use this week, as Mike and
Phil saved energy for the game and
it worked - a goal each !
Beating Varsity 2-nil is never
easy and our ‘grey power’ was too
much for the stripling students, who
never gave up, and kept our guys
honest.
we have signed on Frank Kelly, as
get a game !

Not a good day at the office for Cavy, patches
of good passing, and lots of effort but there
were not too many shots on target, and some
of Tech’s most dangerous moves came from
‘giveaway’ passing by the home side.
Maybe it was the energy sapping long
sad comment on ground preparation.
