Linguistic ESL Exit Criteria for Grades 6, 7 & 8<br />

ESL 1:<br />

Novice-Intermediate proficiency (Communication at this stage will contain errors which<br />

could impede comprehension by a native speaker.)<br />

Listening<br />

• understand general cl<strong>as</strong>sroom instructions given by subject teachers<br />

• understand most of the questions <strong>as</strong>ked in ESL and subject cl<strong>as</strong>ses<br />

• understand the most important details of what is said by native speakers, both in and out<br />

of cl<strong>as</strong>s<br />

• identify the main ide<strong>as</strong> in a p<strong>as</strong>sage of extended, context-b<strong>as</strong>ed language<br />

(** all the above without the need for repetition or rephr<strong>as</strong>ing)<br />

Speaking<br />

• answer questions relating to personal experience and shared visual material<br />

• answer context-b<strong>as</strong>ed questions in subject cl<strong>as</strong>ses and <strong>as</strong>k for clarification when<br />

something is not understood<br />

• contribute ide<strong>as</strong> and opinions in group work such that she is understood by nativespeaking<br />

peers<br />

• make her meaning clear, if necessary by paraphr<strong>as</strong>ing or gesturing, when missing a word<br />

• give an extended account in the appropriate tense of the following:<br />

• events that have happened in the p<strong>as</strong>t<br />

• he plot of a story or film<br />

• future plans or events<br />

Reading<br />

• read and understand the main storyline and most details in a level 2 ESL reader (800 -<br />

1000 words);<br />

• scan a subjectb<strong>as</strong>ed text for specific information.<br />
