Welcome to the <strong>Frankfurt</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Athletic</strong> Department


Dear Parents,<br />

On behalf of the FIS administrative team welcome to the FIS <strong>Athletic</strong> Department.<br />

The <strong>Athletic</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong> has been developed to give FIS student-athletes and their families a<br />

better understanding of the policies, procedures, responsibilities and expectations involved with<br />

participation in the athletic program.<br />

FIS has enjoyed many years of success in a wide variety of sports and boasts a fine reputation<br />

across Europe for its athletic program. FIS recognizes the values students gain from<br />

participation in a well-organized, high quality athletic program, and is dedicated to excellence in<br />

this pursuit. We also pride ourselves on our reputation for not only challenging our studentathletes<br />

to be the best, but by developing their social responsibilities and nurturing true<br />

ambassadors of sportsmanship. These are key elements of our program, and we pay particular<br />

attention to the sportsmanship of FIS teams.<br />

FIS was a founding member of the <strong>International</strong> <strong>School</strong> Sports Tournament (ISST) in 1973.<br />

ISST is the premier organization of competitive Varsity sport for international schools in Europe,<br />

providing high quality end-of-season tournaments. The Sports Council for <strong>International</strong> <strong>School</strong>s<br />

(SCIS) provides us with quality competition mainly for Junior Varsity and Grade 6-8 teams, and<br />

we also compete in the Department of Defense Dependent <strong>School</strong>s league (DoDDS) with our<br />

track and field and cross country teams.<br />

As a parent of an FIS athlete you are automatically a member of the FIS <strong>Athletic</strong> Booster Club,<br />

a voluntary parent group that works to support the teams. The Booster Club is involved with<br />

tournament housing of visiting athletes, operating a concession stand for athletic events,<br />

sponsoring sports award evenings honoring the athletes, fund raising for special events or<br />

projects, the organization of the school’s book and clothing store, and supporting school-wide<br />

intramural, instructional and recreation programs such as soccer, basketball, baseball/softball<br />

and flag-football. I encourage you to ‘get involved’ with this very active and social group.<br />

Further details about the <strong>Athletic</strong> Booster Club are contained in this handbook.<br />

I certainly feel privileged to work in such a wonderful school and with such talented students,<br />

and I look forward to working with you as we strive to produce highly competitive teams that we<br />

1.0 FIS Mission Statement<br />

Our mission is to be the leading, culturally diverse and family-oriented international<br />

school with English as the principal language of instruction.


We inspire individuals to develop their intellect, creativity and character to become<br />

independent, adaptable, socially responsible and internationally minded citizens, by<br />

ensuring a dynamic, inquiry-driven education of the highest standard.<br />

2.0 <strong>Athletic</strong> Department Philosophy<br />

FIS <strong>Athletic</strong>s supports the mission statement of the school and contributes to the overall<br />

educational program. It is our firm belief that a well-conducted competitive athletic<br />

program, based on sound educational principles and best practice, significantly aids the<br />

development of every student-athlete.<br />

<strong>Frankfurt</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>School</strong> believes in offering competitive athletic opportunities to as<br />

many students as possible, striving for broad participation and competitive excellence,<br />

whilst encouraging the highest levels of sportsmanship and fair play.<br />

FIS believes that the welfare of the student–athlete is our prime concern – physically,<br />

academically and emotionally.<br />

3.0 <strong>Athletic</strong> Department Objectives<br />

The athletic program strives to support the FIS Mission of developing independent,<br />

adaptable, socially responsible and internationally minded citizens and is particularly<br />

well suited to implementing the FIS Beliefs that :<br />

● Developing head, heart and hand is necessary to realize one’s potential.<br />

● Leading a healthy and active lifestyle improves the quality of life.<br />

● Expectations that are challenging lead to higher levels of performance and<br />

improve results.<br />

● Commitment, enthusiasm and perseverance lead to success.<br />

4.0 FIS Statement of Sportsmanship<br />

<strong>Frankfurt</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>School</strong> is fully committed to upholding the ISST Statement of<br />

Sportsmanship and has adopted the following statements.<br />

The purpose of the FIS <strong>Athletic</strong> Department is to provide a venue for student–athletes to<br />

compete in an environment that is safe, challenging, professional and educational. Each<br />

athlete is given the opportunity to demonstrate his or her best athletic ability while<br />

maintaining a spirit of respect and cooperation with fellow athletes from various<br />

international backgrounds.<br />

Each event involves students and adults in their different roles; these include the<br />

athletes, coaches, sports officials and spectators. All those involved in the event are


expected to uphold the same spirit of respect and cooperation. This spirit is<br />

demonstrated by fair play among athletes, positive encouragement from coaches,<br />

impartial judgments from officials and respectful enthusiasm from spectators. The<br />

behavior of the adults is crucial to the successful educational aspect of the event.<br />

The adults act as role models for our athletes. Therefore, profanity, deliberately<br />

distracting noises to interfere with the performance of a competing athlete, the<br />

condemnation of coaches or officials, or any behavior that is disrespectful or degrading<br />

to the ISST standard of sportsmanship, jeopardizes the purpose of the ISST<br />

organization and, most of all, jeopardizes the quality of experience for the athletes.<br />

FIS asks that all of our parents, coaches, officials and athletes keep this vision of our<br />

purpose in mind.<br />

7.0 Academic Eligibility Policy<br />

7.1 The FIS student-athletes are responsible for maintaining their academic level<br />

while participating in the athletic program. The student-athletes must organize their time<br />

to meet the combined demands of after-school practices, competitions and away trips,<br />

and still meet the rigorous demands of the FIS academic program.<br />

7.2 Many FIS student-athletes find that a well-planned study schedule combined<br />

with the stimulation of participating on an athletic team often result in their most<br />

productive academic work. Indeed, the academic year 2011-2012 consolidated this<br />

theory by producing a high number of scholar athletes and many grade 11 and 12<br />

students making the academic honor roll.<br />

7.3 If a student/athlete is having a problem with any academic area, he/she should<br />

take the initiative to meet with the specific teacher and the respective school counselor<br />

and bring the matter to the attention of the coach of the team. The student-athlete is<br />

responsible for making up any work missed while away from school representing FIS at<br />

an athletic competition.


7.4 Student-athletes must meet the following eligibility criteria :<br />

Students in grades 6-12 will be eligible to participate and travel provided they remain in<br />

good standing.<br />

Good standing is defined as follows:<br />

The athlete is<br />

a) fulfilling Upper <strong>School</strong> attendance requirements<br />

b) up to date with all classroom work and homework tasks<br />

c) maintaining grades of 4 or better<br />

d) one course grade may be lower than a 4.<br />

e) setting high standards of personal behavior<br />

7.5 Any athlete not meeting any of the above, will in the first instance, not be<br />

permitted to miss any lessons to attend sports trips and will be placed on travel<br />

probation. He/she must remain with the team for practices and local competition.<br />

7.6 In order for the athlete to be reinstated on the travel team, he/she must reestablish<br />

“good standing”.<br />

7.7 If an athlete does not meet all of the criteria set forth in a) - d) above, his/her<br />

status will be reviewed by an Academic Review Committee panel consisting of the<br />

following people:<br />

<strong>Athletic</strong> Director, respective US Assistant Principal and Year Head<br />

8.0 Process for Handling Eligibility Concerns<br />

Step 1 Every Monday before 1pm, a list of athletes selected to travel on the<br />

upcoming weekend event will be published to all US faculty. Faculty must take note of<br />

athletes causing concern and contact the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director before 3pm the next day<br />

(Tuesday).<br />

Step 2 The <strong>Athletic</strong> Director will meet with the respective Assistant Principal and<br />

Year Head to discuss the concerns and make a decision regarding the student’s<br />

participation in the trip.<br />

Step 3 If the decision taken is not to allow the athlete to travel on the trip he/she<br />

will be placed on travel probation. The <strong>Athletic</strong> Director will inform the coach and the<br />

parents of the athlete and request a meeting to discuss the student’s status.<br />

Step 4 Once a student has been placed on travel probation he/she must fulfill all<br />

the conditions of eligibility in a period of 10 school days or his/her future participation on<br />

the team will be reviewed.<br />

Step 5 The decision to remove an athlete from a team can only be taken by the<br />

Academic Review Committee with the approval of the US Principal. Prior to any<br />

decision to remove an athlete from the team, a meeting with the parents, the <strong>Athletic</strong><br />

Director and the respective US Assistant Principal must have taken place.<br />

9.0 Special Circumstances Regarding Tournament Eligibility


Due to the restrictions on travel booking conditions, the following 10 day rule will apply<br />

to athlete eligibility for end of season tournaments.<br />

1. The <strong>Athletic</strong> Director will send the preliminary tournament roster to all Upper <strong>School</strong><br />

teachers 15 school days in advance of travel date.<br />

2. Teachers must respond with any concerns to the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director no later than 10<br />

school days prior to the travel date. If a student-athlete does not meet the ‘good<br />

standing’ criteria listed in 3.0 above, then he or she will be subject to a review by the<br />

academic review committee. Prior to any decision to remove an athlete from the<br />

tournament team, a meeting with the parents, the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director and the<br />

respective US Assistant Principal must have taken place.<br />

3. Students who become the subject of concern after the 10 day rule will remain<br />

eligible to travel to the tournament, however; it may affect their eligibility for the<br />

following sports season.<br />

For example : The travel date for ISST Fall 2012 is Wednesday, November 7. The<br />

<strong>Athletic</strong> Director publishes the anticipated travel roster on or before Wednesday, 17<br />

October. Faculty must respond with concerns on or before Wednesday, October 24.<br />

10.0 The Athlete’s Responsibility<br />

Each athlete must take responsibility for communicating with his/her teachers and take<br />

a pro-active role. As a matter of courtesy the athlete must inform the respective<br />

teachers that he/she will be missing classes for a sports trip and ensure that all<br />

homework and assignments are collected. It is also the athlete’s responsibility to make<br />

up missed work. It is the responsibility of the student-athlete to speak to his/her teachers.<br />

11.0 FIS Sports Offered By Season and Eligibility by Grade and Age<br />

Grade/age eligibility for FIS interscholastic teams is determined by the policies of the<br />

various athletic organizations in which FIS holds membership i.e. ISST, DODDS and<br />

SCIS, and by FIS <strong>Athletic</strong> Department and school policy. The following provides a<br />

summary of these requirements as they pertain to the various FIS teams and sports.<br />

*7th & 8th grade students who are 13 years old or older by September 1st of the school<br />

year may also participate on these Varsity/JV teams.<br />

Maximum age for all sports: Students must still be 18 years of age on September 1st of<br />

the school year (students who are 19 or older on Sept. 1st are not eligible).<br />

Any exceptions to the grade eligibility for varsity or junior varsity athletes will be<br />

made by the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director and the Upper <strong>School</strong> Principals concerned.<br />

12.0 Eligibility for ISST Junior Teams in Cross Country and Track and Field<br />

In sports where both Varsity and Junior teams exist ( note : this is not the same as<br />

Junior Varsity ) in ISST cross country and track and field students must be at least 14<br />

years of age by 1st September to participate in the Varsity division. The student must<br />

have attained their 12th birthday, and not attained their 15th birthday by 1 st September<br />

of the current school year to participate in the Junior division. Thus, a 14 year old<br />

athlete may compete in the Varsity or Junior division at the discretion of the coach.<br />

13.0 Eligibility for DODDS in Cross Country and Track and Field<br />

FIS participates in Department of Defense Dependent <strong>School</strong>s cross country and track<br />

and field. Students in grades 6-12 can participate in team practices and essentially there<br />

is a ‘no cuts’ policy to encourage high levels of participation. However, it should be<br />

noted that students in grades 7 and 8 may only participate in regular season cross<br />

country and track and field DODDS meets as “exhibition” or “unofficial” participants.<br />

They may not take part in DODDS championship events. 6th grade students may not<br />

compete in DODDS meets. SCIS Middle <strong>School</strong> Cross Country and Track and Field<br />

Championships are open to grades 6-8 but the teams for these championships are<br />

selected and participating numbers are dictated by the governing body e.g. SCIS Track<br />

and Field = 20 total.<br />

14.0 Out-of-Season Training and Competition<br />

14.1 The FIS interscholastic athletic programs are organized by seasons (fall, winter<br />

and spring). These competitive seasons are common to the other schools and leagues


with which FIS participates. Occasionally, opportunities arise for local and area<br />

competitions and tournaments outside of the normal seasonal athletic calendar.<br />

14.2 Coaches wishing to conduct pre-season conditioning programs for students not<br />

involved with in-season teams are encouraged to do so. Such programs may be<br />

conducted through the school’s intramural/recreational sports programs which are open<br />

to all students.<br />

14.3 Students on in-season FIS teams should not be involved with the out-of-season<br />

events if they conflict with or compromise their in-season team commitments in any way.<br />

Coaches are instructed to clearly communicate to students participating in out-ofseason<br />

events and conditioning programs that their participation neither ensures<br />

selection to future teams nor is construed as a basis for future tryouts.<br />

14.4 Student participation in summer and vacation sport camps is highly encouraged.<br />

The <strong>Athletic</strong> Office will make every endeavor to assist coaches and students in making<br />

contacts with available sport camps.<br />

15.0 FIS <strong>Athletic</strong> Code of Conduct<br />

15.1 All FIS athletes fall under the code of conduct of the <strong>Frankfurt</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>School</strong>,<br />

which is detailed in the respective student handbooks and the FIS policy manual.<br />

Disciplinary infractions will be dealt with according to the provisions of the <strong>Frankfurt</strong><br />

<strong>International</strong> <strong>School</strong> and the FIS athletic department. The ISST regulations for students<br />

are the official policy of the <strong>Frankfurt</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>School</strong> athletic department for all<br />

regular season and tournament competition.<br />

15.2 The FIS <strong>Athletic</strong> Code for students must be signed by each athlete and the parent<br />

or guardian and placed on file in the office of the athletic director before the athlete can<br />

participate in any competition.<br />

15.3 Should an athlete become involved in a violation of these regulations, the following<br />

disciplinary measures may be applied :<br />

a) The athlete will be suspended immediately from competition and will be<br />

suspended from the following weekend of competition. He/she will be subject to<br />

a disciplinary hearing with the respective Assistant Principal and <strong>Athletic</strong> Director.<br />

The athlete may continue to practice during this time.<br />

b) The athlete will be placed on athletic probation for the remainder of that season.<br />

c) If the violation occurs during the latter quarter of the season, the probationary<br />

period will extend throughout the athlete’s next competitive season.<br />

d) Any further infraction of the code of conduct during the probationary period will<br />

result in expulsion from the program.<br />

16.0 ISST and SCIS Rules and Regulations for FIS Student Athletes<br />

16.1 The ISST and SCIS Rules and Regulations are enforced by FIS for their regular<br />

season games and they apply directly to all FIS athletic events and end-of-season<br />

tournaments conducted by the ISST and SCIS organizations.


16.2 Specifically, the rules regarding curfew and alcohol apply to all athletes on an<br />

FIS team on the Friday night of a hosting weekend, regardless of whether the particular<br />

athlete is hosting visiting athletes or not.<br />

16.3 Rule 2 regarding smoking and the use of any other drugs shall apply at all times<br />

during a student’s season of athletic participation.<br />

16.4 These regulations shall be followed by all students participating in the FIS<br />

regular season games, tournaments and other athletic competitions organized by the<br />

<strong>International</strong> <strong>School</strong>s’ Sports Tournaments (ISST) or Sports Council of <strong>International</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>s ( SCIS)<br />

16.5 Any student who participates in an ISST or SCIS event agrees by his/her<br />

signature to obey the following rules and regulations.<br />

ISST and SCIS Rules and Regulations<br />

1. Students shall obey all instructions given them by their host parents and their<br />

coaches as if these instructions were given to them by their own parents. This applies to<br />

all activities irrespective of location undertaken during the period of the tournament or<br />

competition.<br />

2. Smoking, any other use of tobacco, the drinking of alcohol and the use of drugs are<br />

not permitted. Further, smoking and any other use of tobacco products are forbidden at<br />

all times during a student’s season of athletic participation.<br />

3. Housing arrangements made by the responsible official of the host school may not be<br />

changed.<br />

4. Students must be in the home of the host parent by the curfew hour set by the host<br />

school. ISST/SCIS Regulations stipulate that Middle <strong>School</strong> student/athletes from both<br />

visiting and host schools are not permitted to go out during athletic weekend evenings<br />

unless directly supervised by the host parent/guardian.<br />

5. Neither host families nor students may negotiate changes to the ISST and SCIS<br />

Regulations for Students with respect to curfew, housing arrangements, the use of<br />

tobacco, alcohol, or drugs or any other rules or provisions set forth by the host school.<br />

6. These regulations apply to all students: both those from the host school and those<br />

visiting, throughout the period of the competition’s duration and, for visiting students,<br />

apply also during the journey to and from the site of the event.<br />

7. Any violation of these regulations will be reported to the responsible ISST or SCIS<br />

official and to the student’s Head of <strong>School</strong>. The offending student will be removed from<br />

the tournament and from the host family home, and will either be placed under the direct<br />

supervision of his/her coach or sent home.<br />

17.0 Communication<br />

17.1 Season schedules have generally been completed for the 2012-2013 school<br />

year but may be updated and supplemented. A hard copy will be provided to each<br />

athlete at the beginning of each season via the coach, and the schedule is posted on<br />

the school website.


17.2 Game schedules, tournament dates and locations will be posted on the athletic<br />

website in the download section of the <strong>Athletic</strong>s home page.<br />

17.3 Parents with any concerns relating to their son / daughter’s welfare should in the<br />

first instance talk directly to the coach. If not resolved between the parent and coach,<br />

then contact should be made with the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director.<br />

If the matter cannot be resolved at this level, then the respective Assistant Principal<br />

and/or Principal will be informed and involved.<br />

17.4 The FIS website contains detailed information about each team<br />

as well as photographs. In addition, to the general information on the <strong>Athletic</strong>s home<br />

page (under Student Life) each team also has its own page.<br />

17.5 Any parents willing to share their photos for the FIS website, yearbook and other<br />

publications may contact the <strong>Athletic</strong> Department Administrative Assistant. Photos may<br />

be submitted on CD, DVD or memory stick or downloaded directly from a digital camera.<br />

Your sharing of photos is greatly appreciated. Photo files need to be at least 2<br />

Megabytes.<br />

18.0 Playing Time on Grade 6-8 teams<br />

18.1 It is acknowledged that ‘playing time’ is an important and sensitive issue among<br />

both athletes and parents. The FIS <strong>Athletic</strong> Department maintains a philosophy that<br />

grade 6-8 student-athletes should be given meaningful, though not necessarily equal,<br />

playing time in all regular season games. At this level, the enjoyment of playing the<br />

game is paramount; therefore, all students should play in every game. Coaches are<br />

instructed to plan effectively to allow all team members to play a ‘meaningful’ part. Not<br />

getting a player into a game at this level in regular season games is unacceptable.<br />

18.2 Grade 6-8 tournament play is significantly different, where games are often of<br />

shorter length. Both parents and students must understand that it is possible that some<br />

students may not get into some games, however, it is an expectation that all members<br />

of the tournament team are given a “fair” opportunity to play in the tournament. It is<br />

unacceptable for a grade 6-8 athlete not to play in the end of season tournament.<br />

19.0 Playing Time on a Junior Varsity and Varsity Team<br />

19.1 At Junior Varsity and Varsity level it is recognized that playing time in<br />

competition greatly enhances the total development of their athletes; therefore, during<br />

season games all players should be given meaningful playing time. Playing time at this<br />

level should be earned by the athletes through their skills, effort and attitude during both<br />

practices and games. The athletes should begin developing an understanding of<br />

individual roles within the team concept.<br />

19.2 At all levels it is understood that playing time may be affected by injuries,<br />

illnesses, practice attendance or if players are under some disciplinary restriction within<br />

the team or from the school.<br />

19.3 It is recognized that at ISST tournaments, playing time may be at a premium for<br />

some athletes.<br />

20.0 Practices<br />

20.1 As a general guideline teams will practice as follows:


a) Varsity, JV and Junior Teams 3-4 times per week<br />

b) 6-8 grade teams 2 times per week.<br />

20.2 Grade 6-8 students on cross country and track and field teams will<br />

practice according to the varsity schedule unless otherwise notified.<br />

20.3 Practices are either early 15.15-17.00hrs. or late 17.00-18.45hrs.<br />

20.4 It is an FIS athletic expectation that players will attend every practice i.e. all<br />

practices are compulsory. Dental and/or doctor appointments are not considered as an<br />

excused absence and coaches will inform their team that such appointments should be<br />

scheduled outside of practice time. The only excused absence is a medical one when a<br />

student is home sick and absent from school. Coaches will communicate this to their<br />

team during the pre-season meeting. If an athlete must miss a practice session,<br />

clearance must be obtained directly from the team’s coach prior to the practice session.<br />

20.5 Any changes to the normal established practice times or locations must be<br />

approved by the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director.<br />

21.0 <strong>School</strong> Absence and Participation in Practices and Games<br />

21.1 Student absent from a full school day may not practice or compete on that day.<br />

21.2 Students absent from school on a Thursday may not travel on a Friday. If a<br />

student after a Thursday absence attends a full day of school on a Friday, the athlete<br />

may travel to the event with their parents once permission is granted by the coach and<br />

the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director<br />

21.3 Students absent from school on a Friday may not travel or compete on that day.<br />

21.4 Students absent from school on a Friday may be considered for selection by the<br />

coach for Saturday competition; however, the coach is under no obligation to select your<br />

son or daughter.<br />

22.0 Sports Trips<br />

22.1 A trip information letter is published and distributed to all parents, students and<br />

coaches on the Monday prior to travel on the Friday. This letter contains details of trip<br />

reference number, cost, payment method, trip itinerary, departure / arrival times and<br />

emergency phone numbers, etc. The mobile telephone number(s) of FIS coach(s), host<br />

school AD and FIS coaches’ hotel are also listed.<br />

22.2 All team members are expected to participate in all home and away games and<br />

the end of season tournament if selected. If a student does not intend to participate for<br />

any reason, this information must be communicated via the parents to the <strong>Athletic</strong><br />

Director as early as possible.<br />

22.3 Coach to athlete ratio conforms to the FIS Board policy. The gender of students<br />

and chaperones must also be taken into account, with both male and female<br />

chaperones available to support a mixed gender group of students. All athletic trips<br />

require a minimum of two chaperones unless special circumstances exist as approved<br />

by the principal and Head of <strong>School</strong>.


22.4 Coaches take attendance on all trips and inform the athletic office prior to<br />

departure if a player has not traveled. A student withdrawal from a trip can affect<br />

transportation arrangements, trip budget, housing arrangements and many other<br />

aspects. Unless there is a doctor’s medical certificate confirming the medical reason<br />

why your son / daughter could not travel, then the trip fee must be paid in full.<br />

22.5 All team members must travel with their team by the means of transport<br />

organized by the athletic department. Travel to an athletic event by private car is not<br />

permitted.<br />

The only exception to this rule is if the event takes places in the Rhein-Main region ( e.g.<br />

Wiesbaden) and when the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director has granted permission for parents to drive<br />

students to the event.<br />

22.6 Parents should be familiar with the policies regarding payment of sports trip fees.<br />

Parents pay 100% of the travel costs. The trip desk is open on Tuesday, Wednesday<br />

and Thursday between 10.30-13.00hrs. Payment to the trip desk is cash only however,<br />

parents can also pay by bank transfer. Bank transfer details are contained in the trip<br />

letter. Please note that unless trip costs are paid in full by the deadline indicated in the<br />

trip letter, the student-athlete will not be permitted to participate in the next scheduled<br />

competition.<br />

22.7 Coaches submit a travel roster for each trip to the athletic office containing<br />

housing preferences at least 1 week in advance of the trip and this is forwarded to the<br />

respective host school. This housing roster lists grade level, nationality, allergies and<br />

any special dietary requirements, and students are matched up with host families based<br />

upon this information. Parents are requested to keep any medical / allergy information<br />

up to date with the athletic office. In general, team rosters are sent to the host school 3-<br />

4 days in advance of the event. For tournament events the deadline for housing rosters<br />

is normally 3 weeks in advance. Housing in most cases is done in pairs and coaches<br />

are encouraged to discuss the housing preferences with the athletes.<br />

22.8 Coaches must remind students that external speakers are prohibited on sports<br />

trips. iPods and CD players with personal headphones, however are encouraged.<br />

23.0 Dress Code for Athlete and Coaches<br />

23.1 For sports trip made by bus, the dress of the student-athlete may be casual, as<br />

long as it is in good taste and conforms to the Upper <strong>School</strong> dress code. Traveling in<br />

team warm-ups is encouraged when traveling by bus.<br />

23.2 For sports trips made by train* or airplane the team members and coaches are<br />

expected to “dress up”. As agreed at the coaches’ forum in March 2009, the team image<br />

is important when representing the school at major tournaments; therefore, the dress<br />

code should reflect positively upon our school. The Student <strong>Athletic</strong> Council has<br />

recommended that teams should be identified by some form of agreed dress code when<br />

traveling to tournaments, e.g. shirts and ties for boys. Input from the team members and<br />

the coach is encouraged, so that it is a team decision taking into consideration the multicultural<br />

make- up of FIS teams.<br />

( * with the exception of a train trip to Vienna which is 7 hours ! )


24.0 Uniforms<br />

24.1 Uniforms for athletic competition are provided by the school. In most sports the<br />

uniforms are signed out to the athlete. The athlete is expected to return the uniform to<br />

the coach at the end of the season, cleaned and in good repair and showing only<br />

reasonable wear and use. Uniforms that are lost or damaged become the financial<br />

responsibility of the athlete.<br />

24.2 Athletes may be asked to purchase some uniform items or team supplies from<br />

the school bookstore at nominal cost. These items, of course, remain the property of the<br />

athlete.<br />

25.0 FIS students who are members of external German Clubs<br />

25.1 FIS fully supports students wishing to play club sport outside of school and also<br />

playing on an FIS school team, since this can enhance not only the development of the<br />

individual but also the quality of the FIS team.<br />

25.2 Club players wishing to play for an FIS team must sign a contract<br />

with the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director which commits them to the school team for an agreed number<br />

of practices. This contract must be signed by the coach, parent, player and the <strong>Athletic</strong><br />

Director.<br />

25.3 Club players may not miss seasonal games or end of season<br />

tournament games to play for their club. If there is an occasional conflict this can be<br />

handled at the coach’s discretion.<br />

25.4 Any breach of the agreed written contract will result in the club<br />

player being removed from the school team.<br />

26.0 <strong>Athletic</strong> Awards - End of Season Awards<br />

26.1 The <strong>Athletic</strong> Booster Club sponsors the end of season awards evening for<br />

athletes and their families at the conclusion of each season. The purpose of these<br />

events is to honor the school’s athletes and recognize the achievements of the FIS<br />

teams.<br />

The typical format for the awards evening is as follows ;<br />

17.30 Grade 6-8 Team and parent break out session with coaches for special<br />

awards.<br />

18.30 Booster Club sponsored reception with team cake and slide show of<br />

season in cafeteria.<br />

19.00 Presentation by the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director and Booster Club followed by team,<br />

scholar-athlete and senior recognition in the auditorium.<br />

19.30 JV and Varsity Team and parent break-out sessions with coaches for<br />

special awards


26.2 End of Year <strong>Athletic</strong> Awards<br />

At the final athletic awards ceremony of the year in June, the following traditional and<br />

special athletic awards are presented :<br />

1. Varsity Male Athlete of the Year<br />

2. Varsity Female Athlete of the Year<br />

3. Booster Club Male Athlete Award<br />

4. Booster Club Female Athlete Award<br />

5. <strong>Athletic</strong> Director Award* *discretionary award<br />

The recipients of awards 1-4 are selected by a voting process by the Varsity coaches.<br />

The athletic director formally requests nominations prior to an award selection meeting,<br />

which is held after the conclusion of the Spring ISST tournaments. All Varsity coaches<br />

are obliged to attend this meeting.<br />

26.3 Criteria for End of Year <strong>Athletic</strong> Awards<br />

Male and Female Varsity Athlete of the Year<br />

The Athlete of the Year awards are the two prestigious end of year athletic awards.<br />

They are presented to the outstanding male athlete and the outstanding female athlete<br />

at FIS. He /she has :<br />

- consistently demonstrated outstanding athletic performance.<br />

- shown dedication in the pursuit of excellence in sport and commitment.<br />

- demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship.<br />

- demonstrated leadership and teamwork throughout.<br />

- demonstrated advanced levels of skill in his/her sport (s).<br />

- displayed true athletic ability that sets him/her apart from his/her peers.<br />

- gained the respect of the FIS coaching staff and his/her peers as an outstanding<br />

athlete.<br />

In the event of a ‘tie’ or selection difficulties, preference will be given to a senior who has<br />

shown commitment ( i.e. two or more seasons ) in his / her final year to the FIS <strong>Athletic</strong><br />

program.<br />

<strong>Athletic</strong> Booster Club <strong>Athletic</strong> Award<br />

The <strong>Athletic</strong> Booster Club awards are presented to two outstanding athletes who<br />

maintain high academic standards, are actively involved in other school activities and<br />

service in addition to athletics, and are recognized student leaders.<br />

Scholar-Athlete Awards<br />

FIS <strong>Athletic</strong> Booster Club sponsors the Scholar-Athlete Awards and these are presented<br />

at each end of season ceremony to 9-12 grade team members who have successfully<br />

completed their athletic season and maintained a grade-point average of 5.3 ( for 9-10 th<br />

grades) and 5.5 ( for 11-12 th grades). Certificates and recognition patches will be<br />

presented to these students after each trimester/season.<br />

27.0 FIS <strong>Athletic</strong> Booster Club ( ABC )


27.1 The ABC is a volunteer parent group that offers important services to the <strong>Athletic</strong><br />

Department. The primary purpose of the ABC is to support and enhance the FIS <strong>Athletic</strong><br />

Program.<br />

27.2 The ABC is involved with the housing of visiting athletes for tournaments,<br />

operating concession stands for athletic events, sponsoring the end of season awards<br />

evenings and fundraising for special events or projects.<br />

27.3 The ABC website can be found via the <strong>Athletic</strong>s Home page on the school<br />

website www.fis.edu (Click on Student Life)<br />

27.4 Please note that a condition of your son/daughter’s participation on an FIS<br />

athletic team is that you house visiting athletes and also work in the concession<br />

stand.<br />

28.0 Working in the ABC Concession Stand<br />

28.1 As a parent of an FIS athlete you are required to work in the ABC concession<br />

stand<br />

when your son/daughter’s team are assigned to work a ‘shift’ in the concession stand.<br />

This is normally one or two weekends during the season. The concession work<br />

schedules are planned in advance and parents receive information showing the dates<br />

on which the team parents assist with the concession stand.<br />

28.2 At the beginning of the week when your son/daughter’s team is assigned to work<br />

in the concession stand you will receive an email with a link to the ‘volunteer spot’. This<br />

link will take you to a sign-up sheet where you can write yourself in for the time slot that<br />

suits you best.<br />

28.3 All families NOT signed up by the Wednesday prior to the event will be assigned<br />

a time slot. If the time slot does not suit your planning, you are responsible for finding an<br />

exchange or replacement.<br />

29.0 Housing of Visiting Athletes<br />

29.1 The athletic department organizes all housing of visiting athletes for the regular<br />

season home games which is typically a one night hosting commitment on Friday night.<br />

29.2 The <strong>Athletic</strong> Booster Club housing committee organizes all housing of visiting<br />

athlete for end of season tournaments hosted by FIS which is typically a two or three<br />

night housing commitment either Wednesday – Saturday or Thursday – Saturday.<br />

29.3 A condition of your son/daughter’s participation on an FIS athletic team is the<br />

hosting of visiting athletes for weekend games and during home tournament events.<br />

29.4 Housing is an excellent opportunity for athletes and their families to develop<br />

friendships with the athletes and families in other international schools and countries.<br />

FIS families are reminded that this is a reciprocal arrangement among the international<br />

schools, and the success of the weekend sport exchanges and end of season<br />

tournaments depends greatly upon the cooperation, participation and involvement of all<br />

concerned<br />

30.0 Housing Guidelines for Parents


30.1 During the period of the tournament or weekend housing you stand in place of<br />

the parents from the students you host. Please exercise with respect to them all the<br />

supervision and care that you would normally exercise with your own children<br />

30.2 All visiting student must comply with the ISST rules and regulations. Please<br />

immediately report any violation of these regulations by the student(s) you host to the<br />

<strong>Athletic</strong> Director.<br />

30.3 Neither the host families nor students may negotiate changes to the ISST<br />

regulations for students with respect to curfew, housing arrangements, the use of<br />

tobacco, alcohol, or drugs, or any other rules or provisions set forth by the <strong>Athletic</strong><br />

Director. The curfew for all regular FIS season games is 22.00hrs. For tournaments this<br />

may be extended to 23.00hrs.<br />

30.4 The curfew is in place to ensure that the visiting athletes have returned to the<br />

host family home before the curfew deadline, or have been picked up and are under the<br />

direct supervision of the host parent at that time. Please note that this curfew also<br />

applies to FIS athletes<br />

30.5 Middle <strong>School</strong> teams, grades 6-8, must remain under the direct supervision<br />

of their coach and/or the host parent throughout the weekend or tournament, i.e.<br />

Grade 6-8 students are not permitted to be unsupervised at any time.<br />

30.6 A detailed itinerary of events will be published which indicates game times,<br />

housing pick up and drop off times, venues and emergency numbers. Please make<br />

personal contact with your guests as soon as possible after their arrival. The FIS athlete<br />

has the first and foremost responsibility to meet the guest and see to their total care and<br />

welfare throughout hosting weekends.<br />

30.7 Please arrange suitable transport. Normally this is expected to be a private car.<br />

30.8 Please provide the students with suitable meals at whatever time may be<br />

necessary because of competition scheduling. On a normal weekend, this would be<br />

Friday evening meal, Saturday breakfast and a packed lunch for the return journey.<br />

30.9 FIS Booster Club can provide “Booster Bucks” at a cost of 7 Euros which can be<br />

given to the visiting athletes in place of a packed lunch. They should not be used to<br />

provide their evening meal.<br />
