Well done Espagna, and what a header from Puyol, shaggy
hair and 4 foot six - but he can climb and certainly did the
business in the semi.
My teams tend to nosedive anyway, Hibs, 1860,
Scotland, Germany and dont even mention Roslyn.
Now its Latins v, Klogs in the Final, and if the
Dutchies win - they will be hard to avoid in those tasteful
traffic light shirts. Might have to
buy a DD ( ie dutch detector )
to give Van Gorp a body
swerve.
And what a brilliant
game at the Cale between
Tech and Cavy. High intensity,
high skill, high level of combat.
Pics left show a couple of
classy headers too...
It was a Schwartz (
black ) header in more than
one way, coming in the 90th
minute and hardly giving Tech
any chance of retaliating.
As a watcher of lots of
mundane fitba, its a real
What a header !
pleasure to see a top match in
which the 90 minutes seemed
to fly by - excellent stuff, well
done both sides.
Saddened to see Andy
Coburns Dad carted off from
the Cale in an ambulance. The
Otago football community
wishes him well and hopes
that he makes a
full recovery.
Firsts were away to Queenstown at the
Events Centre. The home side dominated
the first half playing possession football and
working hard when out of possession to win
the ball back.
Our keeper ‘dracula’ Bell seemed
intent on not dealing with crosses yet
handled any direct shots well. A mistake by
the home defence saw Chinny in the clear
and he coolly slotted the ball in the top
corner just like Torres.
Half time saw the away side very
fortunate to be 1-0 up. The second half
started as the first with the home side
dominating possession but lacking that final
ball. A dive, which would have got 4.5 from
the Russian judge, saw the award of a
penalty to the home side which was
dispatched. Poor defending from a free kick
saw an unmarked header knocked back for
a tap in to the home side.
Yet more poor defending from a corner saw
the home side cement their lead to 3-1.
Varsity suddenly decided to make a game of
it and Luke Macris had the opportunity to
pull one back, but the home keeper got his big toe to the ball to direct it past the
post.
The ref then sent Steve Blackmore off
after a two footed tackle by the Queenstown
player on Dan Grice, apparently retaliation for
stepping in to stop it escalating. Having seen
the incident clearly the officials got it totally
wrong. The game was effectively dead as a
contest, but Varsity still managed to elicit
another fine save from the home keeper on the
edge of his box. the team didn’t play well today
and the Queenstown team fully deserved their
The Green Island Premier team played Roslyn late at Sunnyvale. 1 st half we played
under our potential. We didn’t reach our pre-game “chat” goals. But after entering the
changing rooms 3-0 down at half time, we began the 2 nd half with enthusiasm and
stamina and pulled the game back to 3-2 with two goals to Jordan. Roslyn then scored
a last minute goal to end the game 4-2. POD Fletty. Peter Martin
The 2 nd Team played University on a great day for it. Started off very confidently, had
majority of attacking play in the first half, won majority of tackles and were looking good.
So we went in at half time 2 nil down. Battled, kept playing good football, but we lack in
front of goal. We need to make some changes in that department. Anybody want a go?
Great commitment from Cookie and Gary as usual. When I said before the game let
them make the mistakes, some people got the wrong end of the stick. Keep those
heads up boys. We are playing some good stuff.Eric Stephenson
The 4 th Team played the Melchester Muppets at Bayfield in cold, sunny conditions. Big
Al got us started with an early goal but Melchester replied with a goal straight away.
Fadgie scored 2 to give us a 3-1 half time lead. Dominating the second half new recruit
Nick came on to tuck away his goal to save his 24 pack. Some good performances
mixed with some average. Right Back Jug, you know who you are - any phone calls this
week?? MOM Mike
The Oldies Gold played a top of the table clash with the Highgate Hobbits. An evenly
The 43-year-old telecommunications technician
was one of 90 referees who attended the finals
in South Africa.
Best is one of four New Zealand
referees appointed to the World Cup. The
others are Pete O’Leary (Hamilton), Michael
Hester (Auckland) and Jan Hintz (Auckland).
They are part of the Oceania group that will
officiate as two separate teams.
Best began refereeing when he was a
pupil at Waitaki Boys’ High School in 1985 and
became a fulltime referee when he finished
playing for the Oamaru club seven year later.
He has been on the Fifa list since 2004 and controlled his first
international at a pre-World Cup tournament for Oceania at Tahiti in 2006.
Best was on the short-list and had to attend training sessions in the
Canary Islands and Malaysia and pass fitness tests over the last four months.
Soccer has been Best’s passport to the world and has taken him to 30 countries.
Unfortunately he had no game time in Sth Africa this year, but has hopes for
future international competitions as well as continuing to officiate in local games.

The Oldies Green much better
performance this week – the team talk did
wonders before we took the field. We all
felt confident talking to each other. Ball
passing was great. Once Mark made the
net shutter in the first 15 minutes we were
passing the ball around as if we were
playing the World Cup Final. End result 5-
2 nd Division Women’s Gold After a good
30 minutes wasted on Saturday night’s
debrief, we decided to come to the game
and warm up. Coach Keith not showing
any pre game jitters. It took almost the 1 st
half for Nat to slot one in the back of the
net. Roxy and Kat followed suit with a
combo of some good and not so good
balls put through from the mid field. The
last few seconds of the game and we
were already thinking about after match
beers and Arana tightened the game.
Final score 3-2 win. Emily came on with
neck markings from last night swearing it
would give her good luck on and off the field.... go figure! POD
2 nd Division Women’s Green played Balclutha at Sunnyvale. A
fantastic game for the spectators to watch. We ended up with
an early penalty which was taken by Lisa. At 1-1 with ten
minutes to go we ended up with a great goal from set play
scored by Tamara Cromb. Game ended up 2-1 to us. POD was
Premier League action saw the lads venture south to face a Spirit side who had rapidly
climbed the table in the last month. After successive 3-1 losses, the Braes lads were
determined to get things back on track and ensure this trip was a profitable one.
Grants Braes got off to a flying start with 2 goals inside the first quarter,as firstly
Shannon Cox & then Peter Alcock, hit the back of the net. A fine reflex save from Braes
keeper Grant Rewi denied Spirit just before half-time but Spirit did pull one back early in
the second half when Mark Caldow nodded home a Barry Gardiner free kick.
Newton Rewi was rewarded for his persistence with a well taken goal to restore
the two goal advantage for the Braes. The lead was held onto until late in the game when
frenetic action saw Spirit score two top shelf goals, firstly by Carl Henderson and the
second an 85th minute cracker from Morgan McCarrison. Locked at 3 -3, an 89th minute
Shannon Cox free-kick sailed high and into the net giving Braes a nail-biting 3 - 4 victory
and its first away win of the season.
For the Braes, Liam Lockhart was outstanding, delivering the perfect ball for the
Alcock goal as well as providing a constant threat on those trademark runs through
midfield. Tiwai Wilson was also very effective in negating the dangerous Adrian Fonoti.
Best of the Braes on the day though was Shannon Cox, whose effort and ball delivery
throughout was superb as were his 2 long range goals.
The match was played on the new artificial surface at Turnbull Thompson Park.
Upon arrival it was plain to see why the
locals are so proud of their new facility. With
the right flank involving most of the Braes midfield.
In the second half with steady traffic out to the Braes wings from the midfield, the
lads laid siege to the Tech goal. Paddy slotting a goal midway through the half to make it
3-0 and put the game beyond doubt.
The 5th’s also took on Balclutha opposition at home. If you don’t score goals you
will not win games, that was the name of this game. Tons of chances, but we only managed
to score one goal, unfortunately they got two. Final score 2 - 1.
The Oldies Yellow travelled to Ellis to play the Moas, we played well and created lots of
chances, four of which ended up in their net, Grant with two Steve and Mark were the
scorers, final score 4 - 1. Special mention to Andy in goals who pulled off a great save
from a late Rosyln penalty kick.
The Oldies Black went down 2 - 5 at Ocean Grove to Green Island Green.
The ladies returned to action this week after not being able to receive approval to
re-schedule their derby match of last week. Such a shame as they were even willing to
play under lights on a Friday night........
The Grants Braes Women were at home against Mosgiel, on Ocean Grove 2.
Minority are Poms...
England’s dismal failure at the World Cup can be blamed on the Premier
League’s inability to promote home-grown talent, according to the president of
Spain’s La Liga.
José Luis Astiazarán has questioned the number of young foreign players
at Premier League clubs and said the principal reason Spain reached the final
against Holland is that “77.1%” of footballers in their domestic league are
Spanish-qualified, a direct result of home-grown players being given the
opportunity in their clubs’ first teams. In the Premier League fewer than 40% of
players are English.
“In La Liga there are 77.1% Spanish players, 16.7% European and 6.7%
non-European,” Astiazarán said. “Our strategy is to work very hard with young
home-grown players and to try to have a mix between them and experienced
players.
“Why is it not a high number of foreign players in La Liga? Because we
invest more and more in young Spanish players than in young foreign players.
England has many times taken young players from outside who are 14, 16 years
old. These kind of players are not English. This is one of the most important
differences between Spain and England. We invest in young Spanish players. In
Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United there are a lot of young Spanish, French
and Italian players – maybe this is why at the moment you are not creating young
English players.
He added that all La Liga clubs have academies and many have a holistic
strategy that offers education and pastoral care to their young footballers . “At six
to eight years old there is no competitive football in the academies, only
coaching. Then from eight to 10, in some areas of Spain, they will play matches
with controls. After this they start to play more competitively.”

Volunteers are ..
The Heart of Football
Volunteers are a valuable resource for teams
and clubs, and in many cases their
involvement can ensure the survival of a club
or team.
A SPARC initiated report came up with the following recommendations :
• Consideration of strategies and policies that are focused on the retention of
existing volunteers (through enhancement of
the volunteering experience) rather than on the
acquisition of new volunteers, and also
identifying ways to compete for potential
volunteers’ available time.
• Development of strategies that help to attract
more women into football volunteering and
provide support for their sustainable
involvement. This can also send the message
that ‘volunteering is for everybody’.
• Review of strategies and policies, with the aim
of attracting a range of ethnic groups, and
particularly Asian peoples, to football.
• Further investigation to determine whether
‘ Volunteer ! - I
thought you said
come over and
bring the Beer ...’
children from single parent families have fewer opportunities to be involved in
sport, or if serious barriers exist that prevent single parents from participating in
football volunteering. Clubs could identify whether single parents are
volunteering and, if not, how they could be encouraged to become involved.
• Development of family-oriented strategies to assist in the retention of existing
volunteers.
Specific strategies are
also needed to retain younger
volunteers either throughout
their life or to encourage them
to come back to volunteering
as they get older.
Footballsouth teenager Logan Plumlee who competed for Otago at the Milk Cup
in 2009 has been offered the opportunity of a lifetime - a trial with Argentinos
Juniors, which is Argentina’s premier division champion and the club where Diego
Maradona once played.
Waitaki Boys’ High School footballer Plumlee (17) first flies to Los
Angeles to spend time with his Californian-based family, before heading to
Argentina on July 17 for the month-long trial.
A member of the Otago United Youth team which travelled to Northern
Ireland for the Milk
Cup, which he
described as an
“amazing”
experience.
“Knowing you’re
playing against the
top youth
professionals at the
time is just crazy,” he
said.
Plumlee
was a key member
of the team which
won the Otago
competition, and also
played in the Otago
Under-16 team. He
admitted being
nervous about the
trip but said he
planned to see how
far football could
take him.
TECH SEE RED
This weekend saw our 3 top
teams plus the Swans all take
on Caversham
In the main game at the Cale
the Prems had a hard fought
top of the table battle. 1 nil
down early , we struck back
straight away with Judder
grabbing one.
Just as the game
looked headed for a draw
Cavy scored right on full time
for a 2-1 result.
Meanwhile at Culling the Fletcher Cup went 1 nil up at half time , but in
the second half they couldnt keep
it up going down 1-3.
In the early game at Bayfield
Magic’s 3rds again mainly made
up of youth team players went
down 1-5. Scoreline didnt reflect
how they played and they were
unlucky not to have scored a
couple more.
Robs 4ths continued their poor
run of form this week saw them
go down nil 3 , player of the day
second week running to Dunksie.
Down to the Masters and
Friday night football came to
Culling with the Frotters and the
Gerries deciding to play Friday
night so they could support the
Prems on Saturday.
A good crowd was
entertained by a good game. Both
teams had chances , the Frotters

www.soccerotago.co.nz
grabbed a couple on the break ,
with the Gerries replying just on half
time with a penalty. 1 second half
goal to Matt sealed then win for the
Frotters.
A great night game ,
thanks to Rats Rob and Pete for ref
and line. Also good to see plenty of
supporters at the game and in the
lounge afterwards.
The Colts went down in an
8 goal thriller at Ellis postage stamp
5-3 loss but again they showed
signs of improvement.
Finally Sunday Womens Football
, Steve’s Prem A went
down in a close one 1-2 , Coach
Ayoub advised hard to win
games when you miss 4 open
goals.
The Prem B Team had to
default due most of their team is
School age girls on Holidays.
The Swans were away
to Caversham and finally gave
the club a win over Caversham
this weekend. a 2 nil win breaking
their winless streak.
Goals to Erika and
Maggie who continued to keep
pace with Burgie. POTD Emma
N.Z. Ferns
NZ Junior Football Ferns, are preparing to cause some surprises in a World Cup
setting. The FIFA U-20 World Cup begins in Germany on Tuesday night (NZT)
and New Zealand will be among the first nations to get underway when they their
Group B campaign against European runners up Sweden in Bielefeld.
Powerhouses Brazil and North Korea round out the tournament’s so called
Group of Death, but the Junior Football Ferns have set their sights on shedding
their own tag as ‘group outsiders’ and reaching the second round.
A return the league saw a return
winning ways for the first team at
Sunnyvale. The lads got off to
another great start with an ealy
goal to James ‘the artist’ Govan,
an oggie and goal to Wattie (J)
gave the lads a 3 goal lead at the
break.
Once agin the lads failed to kill
the game off and GI got back to 3-
2, but the lads along with Tommy’s
mate angry Tommy finished the
game off with a goal. POD went to
Watti (N) for his Beckhamesque
distribution and haircut.
The Feltchers impressive
season continued with a 6-0 win
over Mosgiel. Jacko was on fire
again scoring 2, Petey got 1, as did the Simpsonater, Phil final got his first of the
season and it was worth the wait and Champagne Wanden eased his way back
from holiday with a pen.
The ABL Whites came from behind to
beat Melchester 2-1. Once again we gave away
goal thanks to a brain implosion that punished
with a great finish. POD Doc conjured some
magic with his standing foot to curl in an
equalizer, Zippy showed he can slot pens when
it counts getting the winner with 10 to go.
I t was a historic day for the ABL Blacks as
they chalked up their first win of the season with
an emphatic 5-1 win over GI. The brains trust
showed the way with 2 goals each to Tim and
Wal, Wal almost getting his first hat-trick but the
dubious goals committee ruled the other goal
an oggie. POD went to Fossie who led the
backline brilliantly.
The Healthy Soils White juggernaut
rolled on with a 4-0 win over Cavvy, Phil showed

www.soccerotago.co.nz
his little brother how
to score goals getting
the first two, Andy
then showed he is
quik learner by
grabbing 2 as well.
POD went to ever
consistent Logan.
The Blacks
threw away the lead
against Norzen. Rob
was class getting
POD, big Will also did
well but it wasn’t to
be.
‘ The Toilets over there...’
The Originals
had a 5-3 win, POD
Stacey got a hatty,
and Cris Shirt Off Cole got a pen.
The Moas went down 4-1 and are now the only team in
the club not have had a win this season but confident
they will do it next week.
The Stallions had another
win, with Lala away it was
up to Jas to do the scoring
this week. Mort of the day went to Sid for trying to
clear the ball 3 times but thumped into the same poor
Mellie player every time.
The Womens Prems were defaulted to by Tech
B. Both clubs had agreed to play the game later in the
season but Footballsouth in their professional wisdom
decided the game had to played this weekend
knowing this would mean Tech would have to default.
As the girls only get 12 league games a year, to say
this decision is disappointing is an understatement.
The Senior Whites went down 3-2 at the
Gardens. POD Carena was class when she wasn’t
being hacked and scored a great goal. It was great to
see Bri back playing and of course scoring goals.
The Blacks beat Northern 4-1 thanks to a great
defensive effort, they had 10 corners to our 1.
POD Michelle got a hat trick and
Ashley got the other goal.
The Hammer
go out to the coburn family .
World Cup
The three players who have the greatest pass completion rates in the tournament
are: Xavi, Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets, with a combined total of 1,494.
And possession has proved to be vital to success in this World Cup,
rather than soaking up pressure and using pace on the counter-attack, as was
expected to be the key by some coaches and commentators and which Germany
did to devastating effect.
Possession has certainly dominated over individual skills or dribbling
ability. Holland have also been shown to be highly skilled at keeping of the ball
and not surrendering it quickly, which is no mean feat given how difficult it has
been to control the Jabulani.
It was the same with Barcelona in last season’s Champions League, with
Xavi alone completing more than 1,000 passes across Europe, virtually every
single one a forward motion.
But Xavi’s team did not win the competition. Inter Milan did. And therein
lies the intrigue for the Final betwixt Spain and Holland, which could turn into one
of the most technically and tactically fascinating ever. Or it could turn into a right
old battle.
zat Kenny or Howard ?

Pierluigi Collina, who took charge of the 2002 World Cup final
and is widely recognised as one of the greatest ever referees,
has advised Howard Webb to approach Sunday’s showpiece
between Holland and Spain “in a normal way” despite the
immense pressure of the occasion.
Webb will become the first official to oversee both
the Champions League final and the World Cup final in the
same season when he takes to the field in Johannesburg alongside his
assistants, Darren Cann and Mike Mullarkey. He is also the first Englishman to
referee a World Cup final since 1974, when Jack Taylor awarded a penalty inside
the opening minute of Germany’s 2-1 victory over Holland.
Having been impressed with his calm and controlled display in the
Champions League final in Madrid, Collina said he has no doubt that Webb is
equipped to “handle any kind of match”. The Italian acknowledges that the stakes
could not be higher on Sunday, and warns Webb that he risks tarnishing
everything he has achieved in his career if he makes a major mistake, although
he fully expects the 38-year-old Yorkshireman to excel. The pressure in the World
Cup final is very high but if you are there it is because you are very good, no
other reason,” said Collina,
Time to take up serious refereeing ?
So many top match officials have quit in the past four years. Baggy-bodied, tinyheaded
Kim Milton Nielsen, the Dane who once missed an entire season
following a freak parachuting accident, has waddled off. Motorbiking, goateesporting
Swiss grocer, Urs Meier has followed him into retirement.
So has creosote-coloured Swedish medallion man Anders Frisk, and the
Mekon himself, Pierluigi Collina, has beamed down on Planet Endorsement
never to return. Gone too is the neatly named Markus Merk of Germany, dentist
and model citizen who listed “social work” among his pastimes.
Grab your whistle and lets GO ! It could be worth US $50,000....
The womens team played
Braes at Ocean Grove, where
the pitch was a bit dodge, but
the girls all pulled together
and a superb team effort saw
us come away with all 3 points
in a 6 -0 victory.Erin Shanks
getting the nod for the pod
after bagging a hat trick.
Mikes seniors took on
Northern on another notorious
pitch- luckily we got the rub of
the toss and played downhill
in the first half. Morg,
refreshed and back from his
mid-season off-shore break,
put us ahead after 20 thanks
to some great set up play from Mike. 2 quick goals by Dano put us 3-0 up at the
break - the first brave header to get between keeper and defender and the 2nd
when Dano fired home a rebound after his earlier shot was blocked.
Thinking the game safe we took
off Abbo, Morg & Dano. Northern
kept coming and scored 2 goals in
the final 10 and a nervy finish saw us
repel Northerns final effort. Luke
getting POD. Brad in goals had a
good commanding game.
2nds played mighty
Roslyn, and we forgot to turn up as
we were 4-0 down after 15minutes,
full credit to the lads as it coudl have
been a cricket score, but we started
to compete, and shut Rosyln out for
the alrage part of the macth, 2 finals
goals kate on made it a 0-6 loss.
The ABL’s played Northern B in
a top table game and won 3-1, Chris,
Phil & Jason in midfield excelling. 1-
0 up at the break thanks to Pete

www.soccerotago.co.nz
Strong, then Langers Phil got
the 2nd . A big bit of samba
rythym from Shae made sure
the points were safe, having
spent too much time in front of
the telly recently - Shae took a
screamer of a free kick, with the
wall being readied for the right
foot of Phil, Shae calmly
stepped up with the left and let
rip , where acording to unbiased
reports- it dipped, curved, bent
and curled ( all before bursting
the net)
With this Northern B
were stung into action and
scored a late consolation goal,
causing Coach Brian to throw
Perky into the fray to ensure
normality instead of calamity
prevailed.
Oldies also played
Northern and sorry to our
cousins from the Gardies but
we made sure of the hat trick by
winning 4-0, goals were shared
by Wrighty, Prec, Nevin and
Gordy. At this time of year some
eyes are looking toward
possible golden boots, but in
our team its the lead boot that
beckons. With Gordy scoring
there are now only 3 out of the
squad who haven’t scored this
year, and the pressure is
starting to tell.
