Diagnostics doctor
The Finnish SME Arctic Diagnostics, on the other hand, wants to
make a small, cheap diagnostics device, which could be used in
a doctor’s surgery or clinic rather than samples being sent to a central
laboratory. The aim is to cut costs, avoid long waits for results,
and save time for both doctors and patients. On-site diagnoses would
improve the quality of healthcare for Europe’s citizens and make
health services more accessible, particularly in remote regions
where long distances make it difficult to send samples for laboratory
analysis.
By the end of this project, the partners hope to have a range of sensitive
biomolecular recognition assays, immunoanalyses and clinical
diagnostic tools based on the TPX technology. And they are not
destined just for academic biochemical research departments.
Without doubt, the arrival of a ‘black box’ in the doctor’s office –
the partners estimate that the market for an in-house diagnostic device
is thought to be 40 000 units in the EU alone – would lead to faster
decisions on treatment and referrals. Biotphex certainly has some
exciting potential.
