The system will learn as it develops and should significantly reduce<br />

the time to reach the optimum <strong>for</strong>mulation, producing savings in both<br />

time and money.<br />

Solid benefits<br />

By providing significant cost reductions <strong>for</strong> furniture manufacturers,<br />

the system could further increase <strong>European</strong> competitiveness in the<br />

global furniture market. The device will eliminate highly labour<br />

intensive and monotonous inspection tasks in the production process<br />

and reduce the exposure of workers to potentially hazardous environments.<br />

Operator stress and error caused by the need <strong>for</strong> great<br />

attention to detail and raw material variability will also be avoided,<br />

and waste from rejected wood panels will be reduced, along<br />

with the total amount of dyes used in production. Both these benefits<br />

will assist sustainable production objectives. In addition, it is estimated<br />

that cumulative profits from the sales of the <strong>Co</strong>lormatch<br />

expert system could reach €6.5 million within four years of the —<br />

project’s completion.<br />
