One of our more passionate players once took offence when
I wrote that he was a perfectly balanced player - he had a
chip on both shoulders.
All old addages hold a kernel of truth and Balance is
a pretty important quality - individually, teamwise, mentally
and of course physically.
And even coaches and decision making need
balance. Who sits on the bench, and for how long - and both
attacking and defensive strategies need to be weighed up.
Should Ricki Herbert - even at 3-1 down, have given another couple of
players a run ? The likes of Aaron Clapham and Michael McGlinchey can only
really be assessed in battle mode, but the price may have been to sustain a
heavier defeat - which would be bad for morale.
Just another balancing act for the NZ coach, and those decisions are
made before every game at every level - even among the small fish in FPL and
Chatham Cup. An extra defender ? An extra attacker ? And subtle variations
thereof. Of course thats why coaches get so well paid. Right Svenn ?
I was amused to see the Fiasco of substuting players against Slovenia,
as shirts were swapped, team cards perused and Nelsen spotted to have NO
number, and eventually Brockie playing in Clapham’s shirt and number. Happens
all the time in the FPL but at that top FIFA level I’d expect more.
Is the fact that are no South Islanders in the ‘NZ’ Futsal team just the
usual geographical convenience or arrogance - or is it because Sth Island Futsal
is Vikings orientated, and so left out in the cold. Over to you James Vaughan...
Looking out the window as I write this and its persisting down - will the
Cup ties be cancelled ? But no, it was game on, and a great game too. In difficult
condions, strong wind, heavy rain and a cluggy track that seemed to affect Tech
more than home side Cavy.
Stars of the show were
those cool sea gulls, who even
joined in the celebrations after
Tom Jackson opened the
scoring.
And despite using his
spare Teflon gloves Mr
Waggett also made a couple of
very useful saves.
Cheers
The 1sts took on Green Island at the Caledonian and dominated from the start. The
superior passing and possession was only let down by a lack of clinical finishing. The
home side finally broke the deadlock just before half time when Yanik Wouts pressured
the last defender into an error and calmly took the ball round the keeper to slot into an
empty goal.
GI started the second half with a hiss and a roar and had a good 15 minute
spell in which they didn’t let the home side settle into any pattern of play. A couple of
tactical changes then saw the home side dominate again without converting the
pressure into goals. A couple of clear chances went begging and the beauty of football is
such that GI’s 15 year old Joel Stevens, nearly snatched an equaliser with the only shot
on target that GI had all game, only a good save from Josh Bell kept the score at 1-0.
Yanik finally got free in the box but was felled for a penalty. Stevie Blackmore
saw his first shot saved, nice height for the keeper, and his rebound just miss the corner
flag. The Ref’s Asst came to his rescue as he decreed the keeper was off his line.
Blackmore made no mistake with the second effort. Final score 2-0. Mentions for Josh
Bell as a clean sheet is always good for a keeper, Zac Rathbone who was excellent at
full back, Steve Blackmore who dominated in midfield and Man of the Match Yanik
Wouts who led the line well.
The 2nds came off a win
last time out against Balclutha
hoping to carry the trend on
against Grants Braes. Right from
the kick off Varsity looked to set
the tone of the game applying
some early pressure and having
a few shots. However all though
Varsity looked to be in control of
the game they were only able to
put one goal on the board a little
before the break.
The half time vibe with
Varsity was very positive, aware
that they were playing some great
football and looking on top of the
game. After the half Varsity again
came out looking to play some
quality football however after 7
minutes found themselves giving
away possession in their half and
consequently conceding a goal
from a deflected shot. Varsity
continued to apply pressure Gardensbut
Otago Rep Teams: Did they jump, or were they pushed?
Remember when the season was rounded off by Otago representative matches
against Canterbury and Southland? I do… and I asked Footballsouth what happened
to them. After four months pursuing the question, the final answer that I received was
that these fixtures ‘seemed to die out
some years ago’. Upon investigation, it
appears that this might have been
more a case of Footballsouth
‘withdrawing life support’; the quiet
withdrawal of sustenance in the
expectation that the patient will slip
away silently in the night. And we have!
We players wander around
aimlessly looking at each other and
shrugging our shoulders, mystified by yet
another unexplained (and possibly
inexplicable) decision by Footballsouth.
I would like to see the minutes of the
meeting at which the decision was made
to pull the plug on these fixtures but
Footballsouth are ‘unaware of any formal
minutes, rules etc governing this
process’. Hard to believe that nobody
knows what’s gone on?
I’m told that the Masters from
Canterbury and Southland are still keen;
so any Masters out there up for it? I’ve
volunteered to organise this for the Masters, but I’m not a one-man-team. Ask your
Masters Rep to get in touch. Anyone who wants the full, unabridged correspondence
between Footballsouth and me, drop me an E-mail at colin.brown@otago.ac.nz.
great turn and hit from a Braes striker managed to put the Braes in front and secure their
win. It was another day where it was safe to say Varsity held the control of the game all
throughout the 90 minutes but once again failed to convert their possession to anything
in the final third. A disappointing but deserved result.
3rds drew 2-2 with Dunedin Technical. Bones had another great game. Terry Parle
4ths beat Caversham 4-1. Fresher will remember names next time!
The Green Island Premier team played at the
Cale against Varsity and to be honest we weren’t
that good and lost 2-0. The problem is if you don’t
do what you are asked you can’t blame the
management, but when you do what you are asked
and it doesn’t work you can blame the
management. MOTM Dan Rutter. Players who
deserved a mention were Simon Chan and Nick
Grant. Next week start of the second round and
things need to be picked up! Flem.
The 2nd Team went to Tonga Park today to
play Cavy in perfect conditions. We had several
call offs a little bit to close to ko for my liking, rallied
round got a couple of players and competed well,
score line says otherwise. Shout out to GD and AK
for their experience and wisdom. Also the three
youngsters Matt, Mitchell and Reece where
exceptional and all have a promising future. I would
also like to thank the boys for battling hard for
playing the whistle and for not contesting and moaning about every decision for
and against. Old heads a suppose. Eric Stephenson
The Third Team took on an inform Caversham at Tonga and with a
settled line up and players on the bench ,we managed to produce some good
football, but again struggled to take advantage of the chances that we had.
Improved performances from the defence forced Caversham into a lot of long
range efforts, and the goal that finally broke the deadlock was worthy of leagues
alot higher than ours. The strikers and wide men had plenty of chances and if we
keep this up we are going to cause some upsets . 3 - 0 down but still a good
effort by the boys
The 4th Team played a good Dunedin Tech side. Against the majority of
play GI scored first only to concede a goal. A super strike from Fadgie had us in
front. Stuttie made some great saves ton keep us ahead. Parata scored his
second goal from a Fadgie cross but a late goal from Tech kept the tenion in the
game. A great result for the 11 GI players MOM Parata for two good goals.
The Oldies Gold played the Tech Colts at Culling Park. Won 6-1. The
boys played some great football on a very small, muddy ground. We scored 4 in
the first half and 3 in the second. A great own goal from Langy.
It must be that extra training he has been doing.
Averly
St Hildas played mid week
against a good Taieri team. A
tight game but dominated by
St Hilda’s. Georgia Brown was
all class, Chelsea Whittaker
scored a great goal and a
good team effort resulted in a
2 nil win. Unbeaten but plenty
to work on. Keith McFadyen
www.soccerotago.co.nz
The Oldies Green playing the Frotters today we
were prepared for a record defeat, as I looked
across the ground the Frotters were a blistering
class. At 1-0 down from a Helmy penalty after ten
minutes I was trying to figure how to close the
floodgates. A quick second goal and panic stations
were raised. Got through to 2-0 at halftime and we
were rapped. After ten minutes in the second half
Archy scored a screamer, 2-1. Tech were not happy
and internal questions were asked. We played the
mid second half in the Tech half but lack of subs
took its toll. Thanks Reg for the goal duties and to
Barnsey for another sober game. Cheers to Col. for
reffing. MOM Barnsey. Soss.
2nd Division Women’s Gold played Mosgiel at
Sunnyvale in cool and rainy conditions. We started
slow and were 2 nil down early in the game.
Stephanie pulled one back before half time. After
the break we applied more pressure but could not
put the ball into the net. After a couple of slick
passes the ball was laid back for Ashleigh Clough
to equalise. A frantic last ten minutes couldn’t break
the deadlock – 2 all draw. Woman of the match was
The Premiers took on Mosgiel in
the main match at Ocean Grove.
Two early goals for Mosgiel (one
from Danielson) rocked the Braes
and created a breathing space that
gave Mosgiel a cushion throughout
the match.
The third Mosgiel goal from all of
40 metres was a ripper. A Kieran
Putt goal gave the Braes a glimmer
of hope heading towards the break.
On the verge of half time though
Mosgiel were awarded a penalty.
Unfortunately no one has any idea
what it was actually for, but leg
before wicket made as much sense
as any in trying to guess.
Duly converted by Abbott this
left a half time score of 4 - 1 to the
visitors. Braes struck back quickly
at the start of the second half with
goals firstly by Shannon Cox and
then Ben Eder causing some anxiety for the Blues.
Mosgiel calmed nerves though with two further well taken goals. A late
penalty save by Josh Columbus denied Abbott & Mosgiel leaving the final score 6
- 3. Strong performances for the Braes from Ash Hodges, Marcus Mineba and
Liam Lockhart with Shannon Cox battling through for his best performance of the
season to date.
A disappointing result for the Braes in a match played in good spirit, well
officiated and an enjoyable spectacle for those present. Sadly though it was all a
little too much for a couple of idiots on the side line who felt it necessary to
directly sledge players and yell inappropriate and inane comments throughout the
match. Thankfully these sorts are an exception but the relief to see them head
back over Saddle Hill cannot be understated.
The Fletcher boys took on a determined University in the early match at
Ocean Grove with both teams desperate for the points. Welcoming back Newton
“The Thorn” Rewi after a long term injury the Braes looked a lot more assured at
the back but it was University whom took a deserved lead as the Cat failed to
pounce on a Varsity attack.

The Grants Braes
express went up a notch and
fought their way back into the
match but were still that goal
down at half time. Raring to go
in the second half they
delivered firstly through Matt
“Its about time” Neilsen and a
late winner through our Super-
Sub Alfred.
The boys held on
through some gritty defence
and some fortunate University
miscues. Solid performances
from all the blokes today, even
though Phil “Your on
Lockdown” Savage got nuttzed
a few times. Overall, the boys
played superbly. 90 minutes as
a team, going in the same
direction. A truly deserved
result. After his blinder to
equalise the game early in
second half, Matt Neilsen was awarded the coveted Player of the Day Award.
The 4ths played at the Brockville against Roslyn going down 2-1 up there
in the clouds. The Arana lads played Caversham at home, we were restricted to
a few half chances and finally went down 2 - 0 to a more experienced and faster
team who were always first to the ball.
Oldies Yellow were at home against Tech Gerries, in the first 20 minutes
we looked good and had a couple of good chances to score, we then lost our
shape and for the next 60 minutes old age took over, final score 3 - 0 .
The Oldies Black went to Ellis Park in search of Moas quickly finding
them and then dispatching them 5 - 1. The Grants Braes women ground out a 5 -
1 win over Caversham with Jess McLean scoring a brace, Steph Cox, Chaz
Holdom, and Kim MJ adding the others. Top performances from Cat Ure & Lana
Ellis. Kate Sims & Becky Walker shared the “You made a meal of it -
Progress since ‘82
A commonly asked question just now, is
“What progress has there been in the game
since the All Whites last qualified for the
World Cup Finals 28 years ago?”
The inference is - not much!! We missed
the boat and have languished in the doldrums
and perhaps gone backwards since ?
Well, two important facts stand out that indicate that some fairly big steps have
been made
First, the current All Whites squad were all born or grew up in NZ, in
contrast to the ’82 team which contained a high percentage of “imported” or
“nationalised” talent.
Second, according to SPARC, Football is now the biggest participation
sport in NZ
There is now a better base from which to take the game forward with the
Whole of Football Plan and really build a football culture in NZ. The rugby culture
built up around the All Black brand has been the dominant force in NZ’s sporting
history. It’s a difficult act to follow but a challenge we’ve all got to be up for - with
NZF providing plenty of incentives along the way for our homegrown talent.
Otago Age Group Trials
Otago Age Group Trials were on at the Oval today ( Sunday 6th June )
from 11th grade to 16th grade. The emphasis was on small sided games, to give
the players the best chance to show their wares. I noticed quite a few ex- senior
players among the parents on the sidelines, surely a good sign that the football
culture we need is developing.
Peter Ritchie and Terry Phelan led an enthusiastic band of coaches and
assessors - with large numbers in the younger grades rialling.
Hopefully, in listing those present I don’t miss anyone out ( if I do, please
accept my apologies) -
Coaches included:- Matthew Holdridge, Eric Stephenson, Sally Hicks, Chris Pike,
Eddie Dykstra, Terry Parle,
Mike McGarry, Al Laidler, Corey
Sutherland
Assessors:- Peter Ritchie, Terry
Phelan, Dave Martin-
Chambers, Shane Carvell,
Colin Thom, Tim Horner,
Richard Murray, James
Waggett, Mike Clark, Rob
Mitchell, Bill Chisholm
Trials are on again
next weekend.
Northern kept Caversham honest with a gutsy effort, but class eventually told,
and after Waggs saved their penalty, and first Tom Jackson then in the second
half, Ant Hancock biffed in a couple, and towards the end we cruised. Looking
forward to Monday’s Cup-tie ......
Adrian Hayward placed a £200
bet, at odds of 125-1, after
having a dream, that Xabi
Alonso, [Liverpool and Spain],
would score a goal some time
that season from his own half
of the field.
The Spanish international
scored in the 3rd round FA Cup
match against Luton.
‘I’ve never placed such a large
bet before ‘said Mr Hayward,
of Newbury, Berkshire. I was
watching the Luton match on
TV with my family and I saw
the keeper off his line. I was
shouting ‘ Shoot!’ and he did.
It seemed to take an age to
hit the net I just went
berserk. ‘
The 42-year-old fatherof-two
said he might spend
some of the winnings on a
family holiday. Bookmaker
Paddy Power observed,
‘When he placed the bet we
thought it was the easiest
£200 we had ever made. But
fair play to him. It’s great
when these unusual bets pay
out.
With a week off, the boys were busting
to play and Mike had a hard job to pick
a starting eleven . In ensuring the
teams style wasnt comprimised he
went for the one syallabic 11- Pat, Tom,
Tim, Matt,Guy, Dom, Reg, Morg,
Phil,Luke, Tom, with only Abb-O, Dan-
O and A-J giving the crowd some
respite and causing them to take
breath as the throng shouted out the
names of their heroes
Up early again thanks to Dano,
who always seems to shoot his load
early, then Tim Dunn took a fine
chance before Dom scored the goal of
the game with a searing 35 yard epic.
Braes pulled one back before
Abbo scored from the spot to put us 4-
1 up at H/T. Braes turned on the style
to score 2 goals to leave us reeling
before Reggie scored a nice one and
Morg (Showing his new Rooney-like
Ellis park, ABL
heading skills) again scored from his
noggin to make the game safe at 6-3.
In a potential poignant moment Pat handed the mantle of the gloves over to AJ
for the last 20 mins.
THE 2nds have lit the torch paper and now have 14 points so farwhereas
last year the amassed only 15 in total. Playing in Balclutha they won 3-0
and the whole team played to Andys wishes with Nicky putting us ahead after a
great run. Durand then robbed their defender to make it 2-0 at the break. In the
2nd half Nicky fed GBH who gobbled up the chance to take out the game.POD
was Cam Will who oozed calmness and is pushing hard for a 1st team recall.
ABLS won again- this time scratchily so, against Roslyn -who were level
pegging with the final 1/4 approaching. Phil Langers chipped the tallest keeper
seen at Ellis Park that day from all of 30 yards, brother Chris then nearly pulled a
better one off as well. Mono spanked one effort off the post and Smithy got the
winner by ensuring he listened, followed up the rebound and smacked it in. final
The Prems got off to horror start against
Spirit conceding after 4 minutes and
never really settled. The Dalman8r
scored 2 pens but only one counted,
Sam was class and deserved his goal,
the Green Machine/OG/Wattie made it 3
and Mathers finally scored after hitting
the woodwork and drawing a couple of
stunning saves out the Southland keeper.
POD went to TC, who every week gives
everything he has which in my opinion is
plenty. Roll on Monday.
The Feltchers had a good win at
the Gardens, but were flattered by the
scoreline. The superstars got one each,
Jacko got one and POD Ben got the goal
of the game. POD runner-up Pete made
a crucial ‘world-class’ save at 1-0. The
club extends its support to Damo after
his announcement on Saturday night.
The ABL Whites played very well against
league leaders Mosgiel but were
punished for not making their possession count losing 2-1. Fras and Special K
were outstanding with Konyo scoring after a great solo run. Although PV gave
POD Zippy, he probably should have given it to himself along with Tel he
dominated the middle of the park.
PeeVee
The ABL Blacks are getting
closer to their first win, coming close
against Melchester before going 2-1.
Special mention must go to Super
Coach Tim who is doing a great job
with the team and the team is
improving with every match.
The dream continues for the Healthy
Soils Whites as they racked up another
solid win. The Golden boys Andy and
Hadys got the goals whilst at the back
Rorrry and the lads ensured a clean
sheet, POD went to Alex.
www.soccerotago.co.nz
www.soccerotago.co.nz
The other Healthy Soils lads (the
irony that we only have sand and not soil at
Ellis Park is not lost) had good win over
Braes. Sam opened the scoring, Braes then
equalized. Alex showed his class to score the
winner. POD went to Scotty Meikle who along
with Drunkcan were superb at the back.
The Stallions golden run finally game to end
losing 4-2 to the hobbits, although who knows
what could have happened if they didn’t let in
2 early goals.
The
Midgets, sorry
Moa’s didn’t
have a great
game although
Graham
showed some
class touches
and calmly
slotted 2 pens, unfortunately again only 1 counted. Baz was also class and may
have found his level. Pod Skippy.
The Originals did a Serbia and went down 1-0 to a team they thought they should
have thumped, despite having plenty of possession they not only failed to find the
back of the net they also failed to find each other. POD went to Harry for at least
showing some passion.
The Senior Womens Whites went down to Norzen 5-2, with Kelly away it
was up to her look a like Sam to get the goals. POD went to Karina who had an
excellent game at the back especially after KB went off.
The Senior Women Blacks kept their excellent run going with a 2-1 win
over the Tech Swans with goals
from Mich and POD Ashley.
Special mention this
week goes to the youth team
who beat Mosgiel 4-1 well
done lads.
On sad note the club extends
its sympathy to Heals and his
Home and Away .....well mostly away.
The Prems travelled to the Central Sunshine to
play Queenstown. This can be a difficult away trip
as points are hard to come by in Queenstown.
Goals to Burgie , Mike Flaws and new signing
Tim Myers saw a 2 nil half time lead extend to a
good 3 nil win at the final whistle.
At the Oval the Fletcher Cup had an impressive
win over Mornington.
Five nil up at 1/2 time saw them romp away with
the game , final result a 13 nil thrashing.
Questions must be asked if Mornington should
really be in the league.
Down at Logan Park the 3rds took on University.
Always a hard side to get points out of , Magic’s
guys battled hard and after loosing Steve Downie in goals had Youth Player Elliot
Gibbons take over and do a fine job. A final 2-2 draw a bit flattering for University.
The 4ths Away at Sunnyvale managed to
score 3 times but unfortunately one was in their
own net to see them continue their slide down the
table recording a 2-3 loss to Green Island.
The Gerries were away at Ocean Grove ,
struggling for players due to the long weekend
didn’t affect them too much , recording a good 3 nil
win over Grants Braes
the Frotters , yes you guessed it
......away from home out at Sunnyvale took time to
really put away Green Island. 2 nil up at the break ,
Green Island scored 1 early to get back in it before
3 more quality goals saw them safe with a 5-1 win.
Finally the Colts joined the
seagulls as the only action at Culling this week ,
going down to a good Green Island side 1-6 .
On Sunday the Prem A and B sides had no games
, leaving only the Swans playing at altitude against
Roslyn. In a close one they were just pipped 2-1.
Good luck to the Prems for the
Chatham Cup on Monday
Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and
which you must have. The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and
is eyeing them with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses.
‘and the Offside Law is
even more fascinating...
Inexplicably Mary was not interested
in a second date .....
The Oval
Mary McFarlane’s Guide to the Offside Rule...
It would be totally rude to push in
front of the first woman if you had no
money to pay for the shoes. The shop
assistant remains at the till waiting.
Your friend is trying on another pair of
shoes at the back of the shop and sees
your dilemma.
She prepares to throw her purse
to you. If she does so, you can catch the
purse, then walk round the other shopper
and buy the shoes.
At a pinch she could throw the
purse ahead of the other shopper and,
*whilst it is in flight* you could nip around
the other shopper, catch the purse and
buy the shoes. Always remembering that
until the purse had *actually been thrown*
it would be plain wrong to push in front of
the other shopper. Comprende ?
