European Water Management?
Welcome to the final conference
of the EU project REBECCA:
Relationships between
ecological and chemical
status in surface waters
21-24 May 2007
Oslo, Norway
Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary
Environmental and Social
Research (CIENS)

Main outcome of REBECCA
The objective of REBECCA is to provide scientific support
for implementation of the Water Framework
Directive (WFD). REBECCA is based on one of the key
principles in the WFD: that relationships between
the biological and physico-chemical properties of
surface waters must be sufficiently well understood,
to enable the management of catchments and water
bodies to achieve ecological objectives.
More specifically the aims of REBECCA are:
• to describe current knowledge of relationships
between ecological status of surface waters and
both hydro-morphological and physico-chemical
quality elements;
• to develop new relationships based on the
analysis of data sets at European scale and present
a consistent and integrated scientific understanding
of these relationships; and
• to develop and validate tools that can be used
in the process of classification, in the design
of monitoring programmes and measures in
accordance with the requirements of the WFD.
So what has this ambitious project achieved, and
how has it influenced the WFD implementation?
You are invited to find out by attending the REBECCA
project’s final conference which will include presentations
from REBECCA scientists and key end-users
of the research outputs. I hope the meeting will
identify future policy issues and help to define the
needs for further research.
I look forward to meeting you in Oslo!
A one-day post-conference excursion will be organized
to the meso-eutrophic Lake Vansjø with the
river Hobøl, which is one of the REBECCA case studies
for validation, and a pilot area for WFD implementation
in Norway. The lake is located in beautiful surroundings
one hour’s drive south of Oslo. The lake
has one large mesotrophic basin and one smaller eutrophic
basin with severe bluegreen algal blooms.
