SURVEY FINDINGS<br />
General Characteristics of Bus<strong>in</strong>esses and Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple traders<br />
Type of <strong>in</strong>puts traded: Seed, pesticides/herbicides and fertilizer are the most common<br />
<strong>in</strong>puts traded by the respondents. (Table 2) As expected, importers appear to be the most<br />
specialized and retailers the most diversified. Only a small proportion of importers are<br />
engaged <strong>in</strong> seed and non-agricultural products market<strong>in</strong>g. More than half of retailers and<br />
wholesalers are engaged <strong>in</strong> trad<strong>in</strong>g seed, fertilizer, agrochemicals and agricultural<br />
equipment and mach<strong>in</strong>ery.<br />
On a regional basis, more than half of the sampled <strong>in</strong>put traders <strong>in</strong> all regions trade<br />
fertilizer. There has been a pronounced promotion of fertilizer use by several non-<br />
governmental organizations (NGOs) <strong>in</strong> the northern region. Sasakawa–Global 2000 (SG<br />
2000), the <strong>Uganda</strong>’s Investment <strong>in</strong> Develop<strong>in</strong>g Export Agriculture (IDEA) project and<br />
Appropriate Technology (AT) all have been promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>put use <strong>in</strong> the northern region.<br />
Consequently, the majority of <strong>in</strong>put traders <strong>in</strong> the northern region carry fertilizer.<br />
Overall, agricultural <strong>in</strong>put market<strong>in</strong>g accounts for 85% of <strong>in</strong>comes for respondents,<br />
imply<strong>in</strong>g that as designed, the research <strong>in</strong>volved traders who deal ma<strong>in</strong>ly with<br />
agricultural <strong>in</strong>puts. As expected, retailers spread risk by diversification to other<br />
commodities namely agricultural commodity, and product trade and non-trade related<br />
sources. Lack of specialization is also a manifestation of the th<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>put markets <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Uganda</strong>. The th<strong>in</strong> markets forces <strong>in</strong>put traders to be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> more than one trad<strong>in</strong>g<br />
