REMINDER: Gymnastics spotting is March 6—17.
We can always use more spotters. Please contact
your homeroom rep.
Congratulations to the 4th graders who participated
in the PE Central Challenge last month! We
had 34 students meet all 6 challenges, 19 students
meet 5 of 6 challenges, and 18 students meet 4 of 6
challenges. Students will receive their pins at the
ACES Day assembly in May.
Footsteps to Fitness will still occur this May, with
some changes. Please stay tuned for more information!
Rise and Shine will focus on resistance exercises at
the end of the month using canned goods. The cans
will be donated to a food pantry at the end of the
program. Be on the lookout for more information!
Sneakers are needed for participation in physical
education class. Please help your child remember to
pack them in their backpacks! Thank you!
Current Activities ~ Kindergarten
During the month of March, kindergarten students will practice
basic tumbling skills and animal walks. Students will
practice balancing, jumping, and rolling while trying to improve
their muscle strength and flexibility.
Current Activities ~ Grades 1—2
Students in first and second grade will practice forward
rolls, balances, jumps, partner stunts, static inversions as
well as basic cartwheels and round-offs. After tumbling,
students will build on their learning and apply it to using the
gymnastics equipment. At the conclusion of gymnastics, students
will practice their underhand throwing skill in a popular
family recreation game—bowling.
Current Activities ~ Grades 3—4
There are spotting videos available for gymnastics! Go to our website under Gymnastics Information to
view the appropriate spotting technique for each piece of apparatus that we use in class. We hope this
helps you out as you spot our children!
March 2009
March is
National Nutrition Month
Eat Healthy: Together!
Our third and for the graders will also work on their tumbling
skills. These skills build of their experiences in 1st and
2nd grades. Students will learn to roll backwards and perform
more complex balances, jumps, static inversions, and
partner stunts. They may even get to practice their cartwheels
on a mini-balance beam. During our bowling activities,
students will learn how to fill in a scorecard correctly.
Volume 2, Issue 7
Tip of the Month (Grades K - 2)
To help students maintain
control when practicing volleying,
balloons are used as
opposed to beach or volleyballs.
The balloons serve as
a great way for students to
develop their object manipulative
skills as well as improve
their tracking abilities.
Balloons allow for the student
to focus on obtaining
skills such as the forearm
pass and overhead set, that
are essential in the sport of
volleyball. Working with balloons
students can turn their
attention to keeping their
arms flat and hitting underneath
the balloons.
Volleying allows students to
work on movements that are
present in other activities
that utilize a throwing motion.
Standing sideways to a
target, following through
towards, and tracking an
object are all present in
throwing activities.
Tip of the Month (Grades 3 - 4)
Working with beach balls,
3rd and 4th graders have
been practicing the forearm
pass and overhead set. The
flight of a beach ball closely
resembles that of a volley
ball but allows extra time
for students to focus on
executing the correct cues
for the skills.
Forearm Pass Cues:
- Big Hands
- “I don’t know!”
Overhead Set Cues:
- Triangle Hands
- Giraffe Arms
in the PE Central Challenge
as 4th graders.
PE Central Volley Up Challenge
(www.pecentral.org)
Three children stand in a
triangle three giant steps
from each other. The challenge
is to volley a ball 10
times in a row without the
ball hitting the ground. Each
child must contact (volley)
the ball at least twice but
may not strike it twice in a
row.
