THE proposals have been developed
as part of a $1 million Brooker Beautification
Project to improve the
attractiveness of the Brooker Highway
as a gateway to Glenorchy and
southern Tasmania.
The joint initiative of the
Glenorchy City Council and the
State Government involves developing
a long-term beautification
strategy for the 15 kilometres
stretch of the Brooker between Risdon
Road and Granton, and completion
of the first stage of these
works by the end of 2010.
The project will also provide
employment for 40 disadvantaged
“The ideas draw on the community’s
desire to have more trees,
including native and exotic plants,
to create points of interest and
‘green up’ the highway,” Patricia
said.
“Art works are also to be included,
and we want them to make a
strong reference to the activities
that parallel the highway. We want
to include a number of artworks
that inform motorists about the
area, depicting Glenorchy’s history
and vibrant culture.
“These artworks are proposed
to be in a range of styles and materials,
reflecting different settings
and the community’s varied taste.”

There’s help when the
hurt gets out of hand
There is plenty of
support and
understanding at
hand for youngsters
who are feeling
life’s pain.
AN increasing number of young
people in southern Tasmania are
resorting to self-harm as a coping
mechanism.
Self-harm is when someone
deliberately hurts or mutilates
their body without meaning to
die.
This growing social problem
has prompted the development
of an awareness program by the
Sexual Assault Support Service
and the Glenorchy Youth Task
Force, which was launched last
month.
An information brochure has
been produced for people who
hurt themselves or family and
friends of people who may self
harm.
Slap bands with the slogan
“Choose Life Not Pain” have also
been produced to spread a positive
message and will be distributed
to high school students
to wear to raise awareness and
promote discussion of the issue.
Anne Stephens, a project officer
at the Sexual Assault Support
Service (SASS), said the
initiative is the result of concern
by counsellors about the
rising number of instances of
young people self-harming.
“Sixty per cent of young adolescent
clients at SASS are selfharming,”
Anne said.
“This may involve cutting,
head banging, burning or other
behaviours.”
Anne says those who engage
in self-harm can view it as a way
of coping with anxiety, depression,
self-hatred, grief, tension or
distress.
It is usually the result of a
trauma, such as sexual assault,
domestic violence or seeing
something traumatic.
For some people the trauma
may be under control until it is
triggered by something, such as
a relationship break-up.
She says the first step in
addressing the issue is to raise
awareness of it.
“Once you start talking about
an issue people can then start
understanding it,” Anne said.
Self-harmers are mainly
women, although young men can
also display this behaviour
through reckless and risky acts
on trail bikes or cars, or smashing
their hands into walls.
People who self-harm are
advised to talk to someone about
it and consider seeking counselling
to find more helpful ways
of coping.
can be obtained at the Sexual
Assault Support Service, 95-97
THE BEAT GOES ON ... AND ON
It is well
that an
needs to be
visible and this
can not always
be achieved
from the
inside of a
police car.
THE dynamics of the
Glenorchy Policing Division
necessitates that a
large portion of police
patrols the use of a
motor vehicle.
There is a need to
travel to a particular
location to deal with an
issue or patrol an area
and the use of a motor
vehicle is necessary.
However, it is also
recognised that a patrol
car driving up the road
does not always have the
same impact as a police
officer patrolling on foot
or push bike.
Foot patrol duties in
The Command Bus, which is regularly used as a Mobile Police Station.
Push bikes are an
effective tool for
patrolling the bike track,
Another initiative I
have developed to make
immediately entered
onto the police networks,
queries regarding ongoing
Along with the officers
be a number of officers
who perform foot and
bicycle patrols in that
area.
The Mobile Police
Station was recently
deployed to Chigwell and
the officers on foot patrol
also distributed 10 engine
immobilisers as part of
Operation Bounce Back.
During their foot
patrols the officers identified
vehicles that were
parked in easily accessible
locations and were
of a model that was statistically
susceptible to
be stolen.
The officers spoke
with the owners and a
free engine immobiliser
voucher was given to
them.
The Mobile Police
Station will be set up in
Moonah at Benjafield
weeks and will also have
the Mobile Activity Centre
located to provide
some entertainment for
the kids.
Leadership and vision for the future
Authorised by Jonathan Hawkes Level 1 25 Davey St, Hobart TAS 7000
MAYOR’S message
What the future holds
Over the past year a lot of the Council’s
focus has been on the important but
mundane issues of water and sewerage
and the effect of the economic downturn
on our finances.
Tough as those issues have been, we
shouldn’t lose focus of the hard work
we’ve been doing to develop new
infrastructure and a new look for our City
into the future.
Glenorchy already has somewhat of a
reputation as one of the best locations in
terms of housing affordability and
stability and, for our size, we have a solid
mix of industrial and commercial
businesses which provide jobs. The
Mercury – and even the Tasmanian
edition of The Australian – are now
printed at News Limited’s new printing
press at the Technopark.
The recent growth of our Central Business
Districts in Glenorchy and Moonah has
been phenomenal and in the near future
the Museum of Old and New Art which
grows daily before our very eyes at the
already highly successful Moorilla, is
going to make our city a Mecca for
visitors looking for an arts-based holiday
experience.
Two major projects currently on the
drawing board – if successful – have the
capacity to transform the city and give it
a new vibe.
A feasibility study is underway to
redevelop the current Glenorchy City
Council Chambers site. Construction of a
new Public Sector Administration Centre
will be considered within the block of
Main Rd, Terry St, Barry St, Tolosa St Bus
Station and possibly including the Bus
Station.
Council thinks that the block currently
occupied by the Council Chambers can be
better utilised and that there are
opportunities to create improved public
facilities and pedestrian links between
the shopping centres in the Glenorchy
CBD.
The development is a once-in-ageneration
opportunity to substantially
upgrade City building infrastructure by
harnessing synergies between Council, the
private sector and government agencies.
Water and sewerage concessions
The decision by the State Government to
fully fund concessions on water and
sewerage bills is very welcome and will
remove uncertainty for pensioners.
It was important that the State
Government continue to provide this
important rebate to pensioners and other
concession holders as it had done in the
past.
However, while this decision is welcome, it
does not alleviate the overall financial
pressures that water and sewerage reforms
have imposed on Glenorchy ratepayers.
Council is not being fully compensated for
lost revenues, which will result in
significant constraints on our budget for a
number of years to come.
While on this subject, I would like to pass
on Council’s appreciation to all our staff
who worked on the transfer of
responsibilities for water and sewerage
It is envisaged that the new development
could include three to four floors of
quality office space for Council and
Government services such as Police, the
Library, Centrelink, and Health Services,
general office space for lease and
additional retail and some more ground
floor shop fronts.
Glenorchy City Council also remains
enthusiastic about the potential to
develop a contemporary tourism and
recreation precinct at the City’s
Wilkinson’s Point foreshore.
With the support of sponsors –
advertising company Red Jelly and
Printing firm Geon – we recently released
the Glenorchy Art & Sculpture Park
(GASP!) concept plan. GASP! is a bold
and exciting vision for a crescent-shaped
boardwalk to link the Elwick Bay
foreshore from the Montrose Community
Park to the tip of Wilkinson’s
Point.
The draft plan is to build the walk
in three stages. It will transform
this area and link in with the
Experience.
services from Council to the new Southern
Water Corporation.
This has been a major and difficult
administrative undertaking. More than 40
staff transferred from Glenorchy City
Council to Southern Water which meant the
reorganisation of many tasks and a lot of
pressure on those people, so thank you
everyone.
Brooker Highway Plan
Many of you will be aware that the State
Government has put on hold a proposed
$10 million upgrade of the Brooker
Highway pending the completion of a
master plan for the highway.
Council accepts this decision provided the
$10 million allocated for Brooker Highway
work is not redirected somewhere else
pending the outcome of the plan.
already popular Derwent Entertainment
Centre and Elwick Racecourse and will
also provide a community link to MONA.
Council last year sought expressions of
interest from commercial developers for
Wilkinson’s Point but, in the wake of the
global financial crisis, none was received.
Nevertheless Council strongly believes in
the merits of the development of an
iconic visitor precinct at Wilkinson’s Point
site and remains committed to the vision.
The site has been earmarked for
development due to its prime waterfront
location with splendid views, a large
available land area, an existing jetty and
wharf area and good road access.
The site is now ‘development-ready’ and
Council is confident that when the local
and global economies improve, there will
be strong development interest in
Wilkinson’s Point.
Mayor of Glenorchy
The Department of Infrastructure, Energy
and Resource has agreed to undertake a
long-term strategic transport plan for the
entire Brooker Highway in consultation with
the Glenorchy, Hobart and Brighton
Councils.
This follows criticism from Council of an
earlier proposal to convert the Goodwood
roundabout to traffic signals, without
addressing other significant traffic issues.
Council had been seeking realignment of the
Elwick and Goodwood roads and an upgrade
of the Goodwood pedestrian overpass, in
addition to replacement of the Goodwood
roundabout.
We have always believed that the Brooker
Highway traffic flow problems need to be
strategically addressed and believe it is a
sensible decision to develop a long term
plan for the Brooker before proceeding with
major works.
Many ideas have been
developed by the design
team, but Patricia noted
that it would not be possible
to implement them all
in the first stage of the
Brooker Beautification
Project.
“What we need now is
more feedback from the
community on people’s
preferences. If we can find
out what people like the
best it will help us decide
which projects should have
the highest priority in the
short term, and those that
can be included in future
stages,” Patricia said.
However, it must be
noted that all the proposals
described are in the category
of ‘ideas’, and must
not be considered fore-gone
agreements. All details
are subject to further
design input and adjustment
and no project will
necessarily go ahead, either
in the near future or at a
later stage.
The main methods of improving the Brooker
will be through planting of new trees and
shrubs and with new art works.
Tree plantings
Jockey artwork would add a carnival atmosphere near the Showgrounds and Racecourse.
Trees can soften the appearance
of the highway and surrounding
residential areas, create interesting
features, highlight views,
and draw attention to special characteristics
of an area.
Formal avenues of trees are
proposed for some areas, including:
• Silver Peppermint eucalypts
at the Berriedale intersection to
reflect the native trees that grow
on the hills towards Mt Wellington.
• Sheoaks on the east verge
between Berriedale and Claremont
College, to replace older failing
trees and give a more coherent
and attractive appearance.
• Deciduous Linden trees on
the first double cutting south of
the Black Snake intersection, to
reference the old Tasmanian use
of Elms that was once common
but is now increasingly rare.
For these introduced species
advanced stock would be planted
to improve the establishment
process and speed up the visual
effect.
• Canary Island Palms on the
verge at Elwick, near the Showgrounds
and Racecourse, to
enhance the festive feel of this
recreational precinct.
• Flowering Australian Banksia
trees through Abbotsfield, to help
screen the houses and replace the
overgrown shrubbery to the east
of the highway.
Other plantings will be less formal,
involving the mass planting
of native trees and shrubs in verges
where there is available space and
a suitable growing environment.
To take advantage of the 2009
planting season some of this work
has already begun, and will continue
in the coming months.
highway planting of mixed local
as improving privacy for the many
• Between the highway and
Hilton Road, work will respond to
the community’s plea to clean up
the weedy creek, by establishing
an area of local wetland shrubbery
that will provide a native floral
display at certain times of the
year.
• Some of the other native
plantings are proposed near the
bike path at Roseneath, for an
area of Faulkners Creek near the
Claremont Link Road intersection,
on the grassy highway verge
near Abbotsfield Park, and using
local native grasses in the median
at Elwick Bay.
Responding to a community
request, some of the plants proposed
are the scented locals Sweet
BETTER BROOKER
Art works
Art works are proposed at selected
sites along the Brooker as a
way to add interest and mark
off the miles by referring to
activities that occur in the community
near the highway. Some
of the references are to historical
associations, and others
relate to the present.
symbolic milepost is envisaged,
to be reminiscent of old stone
or concrete mileposts that can
still be seen alongside old roads
in various locations across Tasmania.
Consultant artist Colin Langridge
said, “The three metre
to monuments such as
Stonehenge and humorously
raise the humble milepost to a
grand scale.”
Sports balls
An artwork depicting sports
balls is proposed near the Jimbirn
footbridge leading to North
Chigwell Sports ground, representing
the area’s sporting activities.
Reminiscent of objects found
during a site inspection, the
range of balls would be abstracted
by being made much larger
than life, and arranged as if they
might have just flown over the
fence and escaped from the playing
field.
Carnival
Contributing with the Palms
to the festive atmosphere around
the Showground and Elwick
Racecourse, a colourful, highly
patterned group of contemporary
artworks has been
planned for the corner near
Howard Road.
The images on poles are of
simple jockey tunics and caps,
reminiscent of a group of jockeys
jostling for first place.
Ferryman
This proposed art work pays
homage to the early importance
of Austins Ferry boat in Colonial
Hobart, when row-boats
provided the essential Derwent
crossing for the journey to northern
Tasmania.
Capitalising on the two high
embankments near Box Hill
Road overpass, this art work
proposes the suspension of a
ferry boat cutout, suggesting
an abstracted ‘river in the sky’,
and re-connecting the two halves
of Claremont community that
have been severed by the massively
disruptive Brooker Highway
corridor.
Orchard
On the eastern embankment
near Roseneath, and representing
Glenorchy’s extensive
orcharding history, this art work
proposes the representation of
old fruit trees.
The group of cut-outs from
perforated metal would have a
slightly ghostly appearance as
if from the past, and be laid out
in a geometric orchard-style
arrangement.
Cutting lights
Because of their large, sloping,
dry surface, the many cuttings
in the highway corridor present
a rather unattractive
appearance, but replanting is
problematic for a number of reasons.
To highlight their visual
importance in a highway setting,
and to provide a night art
piece, it is proposed to apply
coloured lights to the largest
cutting on the west verge just
north of Hestercombe.
• Save $$ on running costs.
Day care’s generation of milestones
CHILD carers, children and the Mayor
of Glenorchy, Adriana Taylor, last
month came together to celebrate 35
years of Family Day Care in
Glenorchy.
Glenorchy Family Day Care was
Tasmania’s first Family Day Care
scheme and is one of the oldest in
Australia.
Family Day Care Field Support
Team Leader, Jane Jakimowicz, said
the community service began with
a Council sponsored pilot project in
1973 with funding from the Commonwealth
Government.
“The flexible nature of family day
care was seen as the most suitable
form of child care in Tasmania, as
the population was distributed over
a wide area and the children could be
placed close to their own home setting.
“Minding Mothers were carefully
selected for their genuine interest
in young children and for their
warm, maternal qualities,” Jane said.
“Today a carer must demonstrate
far more than just maternal qualities.
Their interest in creating a safe,
caring environment, the development
of a sound business and demonstrating
high quality communication
are essential qualities staff look
for in a Family Day Carer.”
Glenorchy City Council’s support
for this pilot project was outside of
the standard council role at the time,
Jane said.
The success of the pilot project
led to the development of the
Glenorchy Family Care scheme and
provided a learning model for other
Tasmanian councils.
Mr Kelly said.
“We understand that
for many students small
is better. As a smaller high
school we know our students
and are able to look
after them in ways bigger
schools simply can’t.”
Enrolments were looking
good for 2010, he said.
Vice-principal John
Rigby will act as principal
until the end of term
two.
Carers, children and the Mayor of Glenorchy, Adriana Taylor, celebrate 35 years of Family Day Care in Glenorchy.
continual training of carers, carer
mentoring system and assistance to
new migrant families.
ASK any long-term volunteer
and they will
describe how it is a rewarding
experience. However,
for the uninitiated it can be
difficult to know how to
get involved in volunteering.
To meet this need, the
Glenorchy Volunteer Centre
is holding an information
session for potential
volunteers on Wednesday
September 16.
The Centre’s Coordinator
of Volunteers, Fiona
Butler, says people can find
out about the benefits of
volunteering, volunteering
opportunities and learn
about volunteer rights.
“The benefits to the
community of volunteering
is enormous and at the
same time it can be an
enriching experience for
volunteers.
“Volunteering can help
Volunteers Coordinator, Fiona Butler, helps
introduce newcomers to the joys of volunteering.
people learn new skills,
meet new friends and have
fun.
“It provides opportunities
for personal growth,
teamwork and a sense of
achievement from a job
well done,” Fiona said.
The Glenorchy Volunteer
Centre is a service
offered by the Glenorchy
City Council to help place
volunteers with community
organisations.
“We aim to place a volunteer
in an organisation
that is a good fit for them,”
Fiona said.
“We spend time talking
about people's interests,
their previous experiences
and the available
volunteer opportunities
before suggesting a volunteering
role.”
The Volunteer Centre
works with about 30 different
community organ-
meeting in Education
Department facilities will
now be protected by third
party insurance.
As part of a two-year
State Government trial,
community, sporting or
recreational groups using
isations, helping them with
placements.
Volunteer roles are
many and varied, including
– but not limited to – lawn
mowing, gardening, driving,
visiting, assisting with
shopping, retail, computer
support, child care,
office duties, activity support,
school classroom
helpers and many other
areas.
Fiona noted that there
are a lot of organisations
in the City who need more
volunteers to maintain
and expand their community
services.
“There is a shortage of
volunteers and this is partly
because of the increased
demand due to the ageing
population and increased
work commitments of people
in the general population,”
she said.
“We encourage any one
thinking of volunteering
to come along to the information
session to find out
more.”
OPENING OCTOBER 1
10 — GLENORCHY GAZETTE, SEPTEMBER 2009
Wombat and Cat
state’s prime pair
GLENORCHY Rodman Bowls
Club members Ray McDonald
and Noel Clifford have earned
“bragging rights” after taking
out the Masters State Championships
of Indoor Bowls for
pairs.
Noel, also known as “Wombat”
and Ray, aka “Cat”, came
out on top after a gruelling
weekend of competition against
25 other teams at the state
championships recently held
at Rosny.
The partnership comprised
a successful mix of varied experience
levels, passion for the
game and a shared dry sense of
humour. Noel is a veteran of
33 years after beginning the
sport at the age of 13, while Ray
is a relative newcomer, taking
up bowls just three years ago.
“I love it,” said Noel. “It’s a
night out in the middle of the
week and there’re good friendships
with the club members
that play.”
Noel says he was impressed
with Ray’s natural ability at
bowls and asked him to pair up
after seeing him defeat a State
player
“There is not much he [Noel]
hasn’t won over the years, so
it is an honour to get a call up
with him,” Ray said.
“We were rank outsiders [for
the championships] in our
minds, 150-1 we said in the car
ride over there.
“All the state players were
there, so there was no hiding,
it was quite daunting for me.”
Since their victory, Wombat
and Cat have shared many
a beer at the Glenorchy Rodman
basking in the glow of victory.
“We’ve got bragging rights
now,” Ray joked.
As winter draws to a close,
they and other Glenorchy Rodman
members are preparing to
return to lawn bowls, with the
season opening in October.
Glenorchy Rodman Bowls
is an active club with 240 members,
running carpet bowls competitions
in the winter and outdoor
bowls from October to
April.
For a social game, Barefoot
Bowls are held on Wednesday
nights from 15 October followed
by a sausage sizzle at a
cost of just a couple of dollars
a night.
is needed to get started.
Rotarians help soothe
bushfire devastation
A GROUP of four northern
suburbs Rotarians
has made a practical contribution
to help the victims
of last summer’s
devastating Victorian
bushfires.
Mike Whitehouse,
James Dunbabin, Alec
Kotcharian and Jack Parsons
spent one week in
the Traralgon area in
June helping rebuild the
lives of bushfire victims
in the Old Callignee area.
Glenorchy Rotary’s
Jack Parsons said the
team departed from
Hobart with enough varied
tools to equip a small
hardware store.
They spent most of
the week working on a
farm repairing some
fences, building a new hen
Glenorchy Rodman Bowls members, Noel Clifford (left) and Ray McDonald are State
Champions in carpet bowls.
Authorised by Jonathan Jonathan Hawkes Hawkes Level Level 1, 25 Davey Davey St, Hobart TAS
Jack Parsons (left) with resident Robert, who lost everything in last summer’s fires.
house and a shed to house
the owners’ fire-injured
horse, hay supplies and
tractor.
“We were asked to
assist some of the persons
who had ‘slipped through
the cracks’ of Victorian
Government assistance,”
Jack said.
“The first work we did
was for Garry and Anja
Pratt. They had lost their
home to a bushfire just
ten years ago and their
new home was nearing
completion.
“Despite being senior
citizens they defended
their temporary home
well but lost their sheds,
farm machinery, vehicles
and her much-loved garden.”
The trip was the initiative
of Rotary in Tas-
mania, which has sent
more than 20 fencing and
reconstruction teams to
Traralgon this year to
help communities and
families rebuild after the
bushfires.
Under the program
the farmers pay for the
materials which are used
by the Rotarians, while
the Government covers
the Bass Strait ferry trip
and Rotary pays for other
transport and accommodation
for the volunteers.
As they were driven
around the area, Jack
said they noticed the
signs of new growth,
green grass, gums sprouting,
new houses being
built. But there were also
signs of the tragedy which
had unfolded, burnt out
wrecks of cars and trucks
and house sites which had
not yet been cleared.
“Some of the sights,
like burnt children’s
trampolines were the
most poignant,” he said.
“We got the impression
that life here had
been idyllic but now the
challenge was to get back
a basic standard of living.”
Some of the team
learnt new skills on the
trip and they shared a real
sense of accomplishment,
according to Jack.
“We had a lot of fun,
the four of us, and you
could see that people
appreciated what was a
small contribution to a
big problem.
“We really felt that we
had made a difference in
the lives of a few people
and we all left with a feeling
that we intended to
return.”
The team has arranged
to return to Victoria
in early September
to do further volunteer
work. Rotary’s assistance
to the bushfire ravaged
areas of Victoria is
an ongoing project.
City short changed on sport cash
GLENORCHY sporting groups
aren’t getting their fair share
of State Government Sport and
Recreation grants, according
to the Glenorchy City Council.
Council Sport and Recreation
Officer Len Yeats says
that while the City of Glenorchy
comprises close to 10% of the
Tasmanian population, it
received less than 3% of the $2
million in grant funds available
in 2008/09.
“Only six grants worth about
a total of $67,000 came to
Glenorchy, with the majority
of that going to Council for the
mobile activity centre.
MEN are being encouraged
to gain their ‘ticket to ride’
for a healthy lifestyle at
a fun event to be held at
the Tasmanian Transport
Museum Society in
Glenorchy on Sunday 20
September 2009.
Known as The M5 Project,
the event seeks to
raise the profile of men’s
preventative health by
focusing on five main risk
factors: age, family history,
bowel disease, obesity
and smoking.
This fun, family dayout
will showcase a range
of national health organisations,
each expert in
one of the five risk factors,
to support an awareness
of important health concerns.
Men, and their families,
will be encouraged to
complete a health check
at each booth, taking the
opportunity to gather
information and talk to
health professionals.
On completion of the
circuit, families will
achieve a ‘Ticket to Ride’
Moonah gets a ‘zappy’ new 24/7 gym
GLENORCHY is about to
be zapped by the city’s first
24-hour gym, due to open
soon at Moonah
Located on the former
Video City site, members
will be able to access the
gym – called Zap Fitness
24/7 – with a specially developed
key card system at
any time.
The gym is the second
in the fast developing, Tasmanian-owned
Zap group,
following the successful
launch of Zap Rosny earlier
this year.
Another will open at
Devonport late October.
And the good news is
your personal key will fit
all gyms so you can work
out wherever you want,
whenever you want.
“It’s like having your
a large number of knock-backs,
but because of a lack of applications.
TASMANIA’S first school of
floristry has opened in Moonah.
Maria Noisier is a qualified florist
with more than 25 years’ experience
in the industry; she and her husband
Alain have opened Philines
School of Floristry.
“We have found that a lot of people
want to learn floristry – either
for their own enjoyment or as a
career – but they have to go interstate
to learn,” Maria said.
“One of the aims of Philines
School of Floristry is to give them
the opportunity to stay home and
General manager Meg Smith and Beijing Olympic rower and Zap
personal trainer Tom Gibson get ready for the Moonah opening.
own private gym. You can
zap in at 3am or on Christmas
Day all over Tassie.
We never sleep,” said Zap
Fitness general manager,
Meg Smith.
“Busy people now want
flexibility and don’t want
to be captive to restricted
opening hours,” she said.
“Because we don’t have
large overheads we’re able
to offer cheap prices with
no long-term contracts.
Council Sport
and Recreation
Officer, Len
groups to access
cessfully applying for these
grants in future years,” Len said.
For 2009/10 organisations can
apply for one of three categories
of grants:
You can cancel any time.”
The Zap experience
includes a full-range of the
latest Life Fitness equipment
from the US, including
cardio machines with
touch-screen technology,
integrated TV, iPod
music/video and virtual
reality modes.
The gym also boasts
large Hammer strength
training and free weight
areas, and a separate section
for stretching, abdominals
and balance.
A sophisticated security
and surveillance system
has been developed to
ensure the safety of the
operation.
Zap Moonah will open
on October 1 and has a special
foundation offer for
the first 200 members at
• Minor grants of between
$500 and $10,000,
• Major grants of between
$15,000 and $80,000 or
• Trails and Bikeways
Grants, Trainee subsidies and
National Championship.
Applications for the major
grants are now open and applications
for minor grants can be
made until 31 March 2010.
However, many groups don’t
seem to be aware that this
money is available, according
to Len.
“These grants, funded by the
community support levy from
gaming machines are a great
opportunity to improve sport
Special arrangement blooms
for Pearsons Florists in Sydney,
one of Australia’s leading, boutique
floral businesses.
“What we are producing at Philines
hasn’t been done before in Tasmania.
“Some people want to learn general
flower arrangement, so that
they can buy flowers and do their
own arranging at home.
“Other people want to learn how
to do their own bridal flowers, or
their bridal bouquet.”
Maria said Philines can fit up to
10 floristry students at the school
– in beginner, intermediate or
advanced classes.
“But my preference will be to
limit the classes to between 5-8, so
that I can give my students more
one-on-one instruction.”
“The courses are designed for
home use, amateur flower arrangement,
but also leading through to
a Certificate of Compliance,” Maria
said.
Students can register online
at www.philines.com.au or 6228
“We have a lot of organisations
in Glenorchy that could
benefit from a grant to acquire
new equipment, refurbish facilities
or undertake other small
projects.
“Groups need to be proactive
and put in a well argued
and written application to
receive a grant.”
Len says many organisations
are deterred from applying due
to the need to match the funding
dollar for dollar and the complex
applications forms.
“What many don’t realise is
“I also understand that government
funding applications
can be a daunting task for the
uninitiated and I am happy to
assist organisations to submit
a high standard grant application.”
Glenorchy organisations
that received grants in 2008/09
WHEN you’re not outside exercising
your dog with fetch and
the safety of home toys is equally
important.
When choosing toys for your
what would be safe for your
dog. Chew toys should always
be size-appropriate for your particular
dog.
For example, a Great Dane
could easily choke on a small
rawhide chew. Any strings, buttons
There are some toys that
should only be given to your
dog when supervised. Some
examples are cow hooves, rope
hooves/ears can splinter and
cause choking, while rope and
stuffed toys can fray or become
unstuffed and cause intestinal
Any toy with a squeaker
should be closely supervised, as
most dogs find it necessary to
destroy the squeaker, which
usually is then consumed.
It is a good idea to rotate
Bowl makes it
a greater skate
SKATE boarders put their
skills to the test last month on
the new skate bowl in
Glenorchy’s CBD.
A skateboarding
competition was held at Skate
Central on Saturday July 26 to
officially launch the new skate
bowl, which was built by
Glenorchy City Council at a
cost of $187,000.
About 50 skateboarders
took part in the day, which
gave the new skate bowl a
thorough work out.
“Everyone had a great
time, everyone was loving it,”
said Council Technical
Officer, Simon Williams, who
designed the skate bowl.
“It has a variety of terrain
that is found no where else in
Tasmania, such as the bowl
and wall ride.”
Simon Williams has
previously designed skate
parks at Taroona, Dover,
Nubeena, Brighton and
Devonport, but says the
Glenorchy facility is a lot
more adventurous.
In designing the skate
bowl, he incorporated ideas
from skaters around Australia
gained after putting the plans
online in a skaters’ forum for
comment.
The skate park appears to
have become a hit with local
skate boarders young and old,
with strong levels of usage
since completion of
construction.
The skate park, located in
Mill Lane, Glenorchy, can also
be used by BMX bike and
scooter riders.
Kids and trees grow together
THE West Moonah Community
Precinct and Springfield Gardens
Primary School celebrated
Schools Tree Day, part of
National Tree Day, with a community
celebration at the School
last month.
Andrea Marquardt, Community
Precinct Development Officer,
said the event, which was a
partnership between the Precinct
and the school, aimed to encourage
awareness of the environment
as well as community participation.
“The theme for National Tree
Day this year was “Get Growing”,
which was chosen to represent
the growth of native trees,
growth of communities and community
spirit as well as personal
growth,” Andrea said.
“This theme is very fitting
as it captures what the Precinct
and the School wanted to see
from this event – the formation
of partnerships, community participation
and sense of community,
as well ways to contribute
to our local environment.”
The event featured the presentation
and naming of three
trees which will be planted at
the Jim Bacon Reserve next to
the primary school. The trees
were chosen to represent the
three School houses – Acacia,
Banksia and Waratah.
“Unfortunately the weather
wasn’t suitable to plant the trees
on the day, however Precinct
members and students will work
My name is Freda Downing, and I’ve
been the Convenor of the Goodwood
Community Precinct for the past year.
I’m a relatively new resident of
Goodwood, having moved there just
I grew up in Moonah near Nystar (then
known as the “Zinc Works”), one of
six children. There were only around
5 houses in the area at the time. My
brothers and sisters and I made our
own fun – I remember playing marbles
and making kites stuck together with
flour and water with rags on the tails.
Another memory is taking the bus into
town, which was an occasion where
you wore your best clothes – no
sneakers and jeans then!
When I was 20 I went on a holiday to
Melbourne with friends, where I felt
the “call of the big smoke” and
decided I wanted to live there. Six
months later I moved to Melbourne
where I stayed for many years,
working in a variety of jobs including in
the legal department of a big
corporation, as the assistant to the
The students were also
involved in decorating pots with
assistance from Precinct members
which were on display, as
well as developing their botanical
artwork, which guests were
invited to view following the ceremony.
“The students worked with a
I always thought I would come back to
Tasmania where my family is, and I
made the move back in 2007. I was
looking in property magazines and
found the house I currently live in,
which appealed to me as I like older
style homes. I came over from
Melbourne twice to see the house,
and eventually made the move
permanently. I recall the big rush in
the end to get everything organised in
time, and just about fell onto the boat
opportunity for them to learn
more about the trees which will
be planted”, Andrea said.
“Everyone was very impressed
with the high standard of the
students’ work and really enjoyed
the exhibition.”
In acknowledgment of the
student’s artwork, the Precinct
also presented a book to the
School, “Art of Australia”, which
will go in the School’s library.
Another feature of the event
to come to Tasmania with my four
dogs, two cats and all my belongings!
I spend a lot of my time working on
my house and yard, which is around
100 years old. There was quite a bit
of work to do initially – for example
many of the windows didn’t open, and
I had to remove hundreds of nails
from the walls. There are still plenty
of things to do, which keeps me busy.
Another interest of mine is animal
welfare, which I feel very passionate
about, as animals don’t have a voice
of their own. In Melbourne I
volunteered at an animal shelter,
where I rescued three dogs that
otherwise would have been put to
sleep, and also adopted a fourth dog
who I found on my front lawn. I
currently have two dogs, Monty and
Millicent, along with Priscilla the cat.
Walking is also something which I
enjoy, and I’ve joined the recently
formed “Goodwood Goers” walking
group at the Goodwood Community
Centre.
I found out about the Glenorchy
Community Precincts when I went to
the office of Terry Martin to discuss a
local issue, and thought I would come
along to a Goodwood Community
Precinct meeting to learn more about
the area. Within a few months I was
“catapulted” into the role of convenor!
I am enjoying being part of the
Precinct, and am pleased to be able
to have input into local issues as well
as Precinct projects such as clean
ups. I would like to encourage other
people to be involved and have their
say about what they would like to see
in Goodwood, and I look forward to
hearing people’s suggestions at a
meeting soon.

Change of country
rewrites the rules
THE conventions of daily
life were very different for
Alyosiane Misumba when
she lived in the Congolese
Republic.
Certainly there were
no parking rules, no rubbish
collections, no Council
rates and no restrictions
on selling food.
Alyosiane says it’s
important to know the
rules of your new country
to fit in and maintain good
relations with neighbours.
But often it can be difficult
to find out about the
rules, which are often
taken for granted by local
residents.
Consultation by the
Glenorchy Cultural Advisory
Committee found that
many newly arrived
migrants wanted more
information about the
rules and services in their
new homeland.
To meet this need, the
Committee in conjunction
with the Glenorchy City
Council, produced a
brochure that outlines
basic Council information
to assist newcomers to the
City.
The brochure, called
“Living in Glenorchy”,
provides information on
cars and parking, animal
ownership, building or
modifying homes, childcare,
neighbourhood
noise restrictions, rubbish
collections and
much more.
“It’s a good idea and I
encourage this for everyone
[new migrants],”
Alyosiane said.
“In the community you
have many people who
have lived in a town and
Council Community Development Officer, Rebecca
Essex and Cultural Diversity Committee member,
Alyosiane Misumba, display the new Living in
Glenorchy brochures.
in the country and many
people don’t understand
[the local rules].”
Alyosiane cites an
example of a newly arrived
neighbouring family who
shared her bins and didn’t
understand the need to separate
recyclables from the
rubbish, leading to complaints
from Council. Simple
things like this, which
can create friction between
neighbours, can be resolved
through education via the
brochure.
The “Living in
Glenorchy” brochure is
available in six languages
including Swahili, Madi,
Burmese, Persian, Amharic,
Sudenise Arabic and
French.
Some of the translations
have been provided
by members of the
Glenorchy Cultural Diversity
Advisory Committee
and additional languages
will be added on an as needs
basis.
The Committee is considering
producing another
brochure which provides
information about services
available in Glenorchy.
The Glenorchy Gazette is produced by the Glenorchy City Council and printed by The Examiner, Launceston
