Welcome to the second edition of the bi-monthly “Active Glenorchy” – <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Recreation</strong> e-newsletter.<br />

Why is Physical Activity important?<br />

For Young People (they need at least 60 m<strong>in</strong>utes of daily moderate to vigorous physical activity) it can:<br />

Promote healthy growth <strong>and</strong> development<br />

Build strong bones <strong>and</strong> muscles<br />

Improve balance <strong>and</strong> develop new skills<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> develop flexibility<br />

Help achieve <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a healthy weight<br />

Improve cardiovascular fitness<br />

Help relaxation <strong>and</strong> reduce stress<br />

Improve posture<br />

Provide opportunities for fun <strong>and</strong> to make friends<br />

Improve self-esteem <strong>and</strong> confidence<br />

For Adults (<strong>you</strong> should try to do at least 30 m<strong>in</strong>utes of moderate <strong>in</strong>tensity physical activity most days of the<br />

week <strong>and</strong> the great news is that three lots of 10 m<strong>in</strong>utes is just as beneficial, <strong>and</strong> might be easier to fit <strong>in</strong>), it can:<br />

Make <strong>you</strong> look <strong>and</strong> feel better :<br />

Give <strong>you</strong> more energy;<br />

Help <strong>you</strong> sleep better;<br />

Help relaxation;<br />

Provide opportunities to meet people <strong>and</strong> make friends;<br />

Help to control weight ( <strong>and</strong> reduces body fat),<br />

Help prevent heart disease, stroke <strong>and</strong> high blood pressure<br />

Reduce the risk of develop<strong>in</strong>g type II diabetes <strong>and</strong> some cancers<br />

Help build <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> healthy bones, muscles <strong>and</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ts, hence reduc<strong>in</strong>g the risk of <strong>in</strong>jury<br />

but it will certa<strong>in</strong>ly add life to <strong>you</strong>r years!”<br />

Heart Foundation Walk<strong>in</strong>g – “Goodwood Goers”<br />

GLENORCHY’S HEARTFELT PLAN FOR HEALTH<br />

The Heart Foundation <strong>and</strong> Glenorchy City Council have jo<strong>in</strong>ed forces to establish walk<strong>in</strong>g groups <strong>in</strong> the area,<br />

<strong>with</strong> the first be<strong>in</strong>g launched <strong>in</strong> Goodwood <strong>in</strong> late April <strong>with</strong> 20 walkers sign<strong>in</strong>g up for the program <strong>and</strong> a<br />

further 5 have s<strong>in</strong>ce jo<strong>in</strong>ed the group..<br />

The aim is to provide the community <strong>with</strong> a safe <strong>and</strong> social way of gett<strong>in</strong>g active <strong>and</strong> encourage residents to<br />

pull on their walk<strong>in</strong>g shoes <strong>and</strong> jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g groups <strong>in</strong> the Glenorchy area.<br />

Mayor of Glenorchy Adriana Taylor says establish<strong>in</strong>g Heart Foundation Walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the area is all part of<br />

Council’s <strong>Recreation</strong> Plan that was approved <strong>in</strong> September 2008.<br />

"Part of Council's core bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> recreation is to <strong>in</strong>crease participation by residents <strong>in</strong> their preferred<br />

physical <strong>and</strong> social recreation activities," Ald. Taylor said.<br />

Heart Foundation Tasmania CEO Graeme Lynch says we need at least 30 m<strong>in</strong>utes a day of regular physical<br />

activity to ga<strong>in</strong> health benefits.<br />

"Participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a regular walk<strong>in</strong>g group can help <strong>you</strong> become healthier through reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>you</strong>r risk of heart<br />

disease <strong>and</strong> stroke <strong>and</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g to reduce body fat, blood pressure <strong>and</strong> cholesterol," Mr Lynch said.<br />

Tracie Bill<strong>in</strong>g from the Goodwood Community Centre says this as a wonderful opportunity for all genders <strong>and</strong><br />

ages to participate <strong>in</strong> a form of exercise <strong>in</strong> a safe, supportive <strong>and</strong> friendly environment.<br />

“Walk<strong>in</strong>g can be undertaken by almost everyone, <strong>you</strong> can set <strong>you</strong>r own pace <strong>and</strong> distance <strong>and</strong> it costs<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g but a small amount of <strong>you</strong>r time to participate,” Tracie said.<br />

Heart Foundation Walk<strong>in</strong>g is a free program used to motivate <strong>and</strong> provide <strong>in</strong>centives for people to walk on a<br />

regular basis. The walk<strong>in</strong>g groups are suitable for people of all ages <strong>and</strong> fitness levels, help<strong>in</strong>g to motivate by<br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g a friendly, social environment as well as a walker recognition scheme.<br />

Invitation to Comment – “A New Tasmanian Community Grants Program”<br />

The Department of Treasury <strong>and</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ance has released a discussion paper for public submissions <strong>and</strong><br />

comments relevant to the framework of the new community grants program which is set to replace the current<br />

Tasmanian Community Fund, the charitable organisations grants program <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Recreation</strong><br />

Major <strong>and</strong> M<strong>in</strong>or Grants programs relat<strong>in</strong>g the 25% allocations from the Community Support Levy..<br />

This proposed new program may affect how current <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Recreation</strong> Major <strong>and</strong> M<strong>in</strong>or Grants programs<br />

are adm<strong>in</strong>istered.<br />

The discussion paper is available at www.treasury.tas.gov.au <strong>and</strong> comments <strong>and</strong> submissions are required<br />

by 19 th June 2009<br />

Glenorchy Mobile Activity Centre<br />

With the assistance of a Community <strong>Recreation</strong> Grant from <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Recreation</strong> Tasmania, the Glenorchy<br />

City Council is establish<strong>in</strong>g a Glenorchy Mobile Activity Centre (MAC) Pilot Project as the first stage of the<br />

development of a Police <strong>and</strong> Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) service <strong>in</strong> the Glenorchy Local Government Area.<br />

The MAC pilot project will deliver sports, leisure <strong>and</strong> recreation services <strong>and</strong> programs that are accessible<br />

<strong>and</strong> available <strong>in</strong> a range of sett<strong>in</strong>gs to <strong>you</strong>ng people at risk <strong>in</strong> the Glenorchy area.<br />

In partnership <strong>with</strong> Mission Australia <strong>and</strong> the Tasmania Police the program which is for <strong>you</strong>ng people, will<br />

<strong>in</strong>itially be run <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g locations:<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield Gardens Primary School - Every Monday – 3.30pm to 5.30pm<br />

Chigwell – Bucaan Community House - Every Thursday – 3.30pm to 5.30pm<br />

Claremont Village Green - Every Friday – 3.30pm to 5.30pm<br />

Goodwood – Gibl<strong>in</strong>’s reserve - Every Saturday – 1.30pm to 4.30pm<br />

The Official Launch of the project will take place on Wednesday 27th May at 3.30 pm at Gibl<strong>in</strong>’s Reserve,<br />

Goodwood - <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g official launch by Mayor of Glenorchy Adriana Taylor <strong>and</strong> Inspector John Arnold of the<br />

Glenorchy Division - Tasmania Police, BBQ, fun events, <strong>and</strong> some special guests from the Hobart Chargers,<br />

Senior Football <strong>and</strong> local soccer groups etc<br />
