President’s Message Joann Ramsburg
Has everyone enjoyed this March? I don’t know what is in
store for us this summer, but the spring has been certainly
beautiful.
Happy Easter
Our exciting news is the work done at Select Seconds. The
building that houses our shop was sold and we were asked to
stay. This was welcomed news, as we didn’t want to have to
re-locate. We have a nice lease with renewal options, so we
thought it was time to spruce up the shop. If you haven’t
stopped in, please do and check it out. You might even find
a nice spring outfit. We are planning a Re-Grand Opening
on May 4 th , to coincide with the First Saturday Walk.
Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for June 20 th at Dutch’s
Daughters. We would like to see as many members as we
can to come and support our new officers that will be
installed. Look for your reservation form in this
Stethoscope and return to Lois Jarman.
Take care,
FMH President’s Letter Tomas A. Kleinhanzl
Dear Friends,
I hope that you have had the opportunity to get outside and enjoy our early spring. It has indeed
been a treat to see the trees and flowers blooming three weeks ahead of schedule. I must admit that
I was not thrilled about mowing the lawn so early in the year! Oh well. I suppose that warmweather
chore was coming our way sooner or later anyway.
Along with one of the mildest winters ever experienced in central Maryland, you may have noticed
that the flu season passed us by with little more than a few cases of fever and dehydration. That is
a good thing for the health and well-being of the community we serve. The down side is the
patient volumes around which our fiscal year 2012 budget was planned simply did not happen. We
have some catching up to do. The best way for us to address those issues is by closely monitoring
the expense side of the ledger. By working together, I am confident that we will end the fiscal year
well within our budgetary projections.
The construction projects on the second and fourth floors of the hospital are complete. The 2C
inpatient unit, the area where the administrative offices used to be located, began accepting
patients in March. The 4A North unit will begin housing patients by the end of April. We expect
to receive approval from the State for the additional beds planned for the 4A South unit in mid-
April. Construction will resume on the fourth floor when that approval is received. Some
finishing work is continuing on the roof and one more layer of concrete needs to be poured on the
helipad. The elevators that will transport patients from the helipad to the Emergency Department
are scheduled to arrive later this month and they will be installed in May.
In early March, the Frederick City Planning Commission approved the site plan for the
construction of a 420 parking space addition to the existing garage. The bidding process for the
project will begin shortly and the plan is to have a contractor signed on to the project by midsummer.
The hospital has agreed to make some enhancements to the hospital’s 7 th Street entrance
before construction on the parking deck begins, and that work will begin in the fall. Construction
will take 12 to 14 months, and all of us will have to work around the inconveniences that come
with a construction project of this size. I thank you in advance for your patience and support.
Best regards,
Tom Kleinhanzl
Director’s Letter Sharon Hannaby
During April we celebrate National Volunteer Week and all that volunteers do throughout the
United States. In particular, we at FMH celebrate our many volunteers and their contributions to
our healthcare system.
In FY 2011, FMH was fortunate to have 781 active volunteers who gave 89,382.75 hours of
service. Although these are impressive numbers, they can in no way show the true value of all that
the volunteers accomplish. Who can put a value on helping someone who is lost in the hospital,
looking for a loved one’s room or comforting a patient in the emergency room?
As Frederick Memorial Healthcare System focuses on being an “always” culture (always doing the
best for our patients and visitors) we know that we can always count on our volunteers.
A heartfelt – Thank You – for all that you do!
Hour-by-Hour Hours Committee
The total volunteer hours the month of February was:
55 Juniors worked 564.25 hours
34 College students worked 374.25 hours
346 Seniors worked 5,359.25 hours
Total to FMH for February was 6,298.75 hours.
Protection 4 U Gail Sonnenberg, RN, CIC
Infection Prevention and Control, FMH
FMH, in our culture of providing superb care, is committed to protecting the health
and well-being of our patients and our staff, of which the volunteer services is a valuable
partner. Due to the nature of work done in a hospital, those working in a hospital setting are at a
higher risk of contracting and transmitting seasonal influenza than the average person. To that end,
FMH has elected to require mandatory flu vaccines for all employees and volunteers, beginning
in the fall of 2012.
Many of Medicine's Professional organizations, such as the American College of Physicians, the
National Vaccine Advisory Committee, The American Nurses Association, The Infectious
Diseases Society of America, The American Academy of Pediatrics and many others, including the
Maryland Hospital Association, support mandatory influenza vaccination for all health care
workers.
As always, the flu vaccine will be provided free of charge to all FMH staff and volunteers. There
will be a process for anyone who has a documented allergy or religious objection. More
information to come in future newsletters!
Recruitment and Appreciation Ellen Noland
The winner of the March drawing was Greta Huffer. Please remember to sign up for the picnic –
we will be having bingo and are gathering some very nice prizes.
COMING EVENT: The R&A committee is looking into an event for November. You may think it
is way too early to think about - but this event sells out and we need to make the reservations. We
will be chartering a bus to take volunteers and their family and/or friends to the Antietam
Recreation Center. This is a dinner theatre just outside Hagerstown, Md. The show is called
Cowboy Christmas and I understand it is a fun, entertaining evening.
WHAT: Cowboy Christmas
WHEN: November 10, 2012
WHERE: Antietam Recreation Center
COST: $50.00 for dinner and transportation
DEPOSIT: $10.00 (We will collect balance ($40.00) in October)
The bus holds 39 people – we would need to know now if there is an interest in going. I will post a
program of the show and a signup sheet on the R&A bulletin board in the sign in room (look to
your left as you leave the room). Hopefully we will have enough interest, from the volunteers, to
be able to charter the bus and reserve seats for the show. We are asking for a deposit in order to
reserve seats and a deposit for the bus. SO - reserve Saturday, November 10 th for an evening out
with your fellow volunteers, friends and/or family.
If you do not go into the sign in room and would like to go - you can call me 301-831-6416 or
email me fen728@comcast.net and I will put you on the list.
