Frederick, MD: Frederick Memorial Hospital (FMH) and the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce teamed up
to host the 2 nd Annual FMH Business Health Awards & Corporate Honor Roll Reception on Wednesday,
November 16, 2011 at Dutch’s Daughter.
The Business Health Awards program was established by FMH’s Business & Industry Committee and partnered
by the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce to recognize area businesses that provide innovative health and
wellness programs for their employees.
“We have two objectives for the program: First, to recognize businesses that have emerged as leaders in health
promotion for their employees. Secondly, we hope that this annual program will help other businesses take
more of a role in encouraging health and wellness in their organizations as a way to contain and even reduce
their healthcare costs,” stated Gary Sanbower, Chairman of the FMH Business & Industry Committee.
To qualify for an award nominees were asked to highlight programs focused on the following areas: health
education, fitness, health assessments, and wellness benefits. Due to the quality of applicants received there
were four award recipients in three categories honored for their vision and commitment to a healthy workforce.
Ric Adams, President & CEO of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce introduced the recipients of the
awards in the three different categories, based on the size of the company; Small (1‐150 employees), Medium
(151‐500), and Large (501+).
“Quote from Ric Adams”
AWARD RECIEPIENTS
Small Company Business Health Award for 2011 (1 – 150 employees)
The recipient in the Small Company category did a great job of meeting the requirements set in the application.
Here are just a few of the key elements that made them shine. This company lists as one of its core values
supporting a healthy workforce and workplace. It takes wellness seriously by having a Wellness Ambassador
and a 32‐member Wellness Council at their Frederick location. This group works to provide a variety of health
related programs to staff and families including webinars on nutrition and healthy parenting. The company
partners with a wellness vendor, Live Healthier, which provides resources and tools to help maintain and or
improve health and wellness. These services include: confidential health coaching with a health expert and
innovative wellness programs like “...On the Move... For Good” which is an eight week program aimed at
encouraging employees and families to increase physical activity.

Medium Company Business Health Awards for 2011 (151‐500 employees)
With a great response, we added an additional award to this category.
The first recipient in the Medium Company category did a great job of meeting the requirements set in the
application. This company assembled a cross functional team of employees from all areas of the company to
establish a 5 year Wellness Strategic Plan. The strategic plan focuses on 7 dimensions of wellness to include
physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, and occupational well being. The program
ranges from walking, running, and cycling, to Yoga, Tai Chi, and meditation. The winner has branded their
wellness program a “Healthy U.”
The second recipient in the Medium Company category did a great job of meeting the requirements set in the
application. Here are a few reasons why this company stood out from the crowd. In addition to asking
employees to participate in annual health screenings, and offering reduced premiums for wellness plan
participants, the winner now has an on‐site nurse practitioner. With their production operations working
around the clock, it is difficult to make an appointment and take the time to see your family doctor when you
are just getting off work at 6 a.m. The clinic is currently open two days a week, but is looking to expand
availability and provides emergency response, treats illnesses, offers preventive care and disease management.
Also, their current weight loss group is working with the clinic to help provide one on one counseling in their
weight loss challenge.
County winner has been recognized for their wellness initiatives by the American Heart Association winning the
Start! Fit‐Friendly Gold Award, and the 2010 Apex award for innovative employee wellness programs. A key to
their success was recruiting Wellness Champions at every worksite. They are responsible for promoting wellness
programs along with educating and motivating staff through internal wellness competitions at their numerous
Frederick County locations. This company provides employees with access to a Nurseline, a Healthy Pregnancy
Program, and online health coaching. The company also offers employees work life services such as financial,
“We've spent the last 18 months rebuilding our committee with a focus on providing service and
education on healthcare to the local business community. The Business Health Awards program
culminates almost a year of planning. We had two objectives for the program: First, to recognize
businesses that have emerged as leaders in health promotion for their employees. Secondly, we hope
that this annual program will help other businesses take more of a role in encouraging health and
wellness in their organizations as a way to contain and even reduce their healthcare costs,” stated Gary
Sanbower, Chairman of the FMH Business & Industry Committee.
To qualify for an award, the nominees were asked to highlight programs which focused on the following
change in safety matters throughout the organization. The awareness and power of the employees has
resulted in a 75% decrease in work days lost from accidents from FY2008 to FY2009. This aided them in
being ranked in the top 1% for safety out of 7 million workplaces nationwide!
Through the organization’s fitness center they offer free personal training to include fitness routines,
body composition, nutritional analysis and fitness assessments. Other free programs include: prevention
