Writers’ Workshop

I-Chun Shih, like many ESL students,
appeared in our class in the middle
of the school year—and during writers’
workshop. As a middle school English
teacher of deaf students, I did writers’
workshop every day. During this time,
students worked on aspects of their
own writing and I met with them individually
to discuss their progress. It was
usually a 60-minute period, including a
mini-lesson, writing, and sharing what
we had written with each other.
Now here was Eugene, as he came
to be called in America, thin and small
with ruffled hair, looking very uncom-
