The skins architecture
In our Newsletter 5/2006 we have already reported
about the importance of skin care in our sector. In
order to sensitize our staff as well as our partners even
more profoundly for this serious topic we would like to
look at it some closer.
With an expanse of about 1,5 bis 2 m² the skin is not only the biggest but also the
most functional (protection-) organ of a human being.
Always in touch with the environment it is exposed to extremely many stimuli and
stresses. Of course we are not talking about the pleasant sensory stimuli of a tender
touch or a kiss but stimuli as for example UV-radiation, chemicals, mechanical
influences etc..

- Resorption function (absorption of substances into the bloodstream)
- Sensory function (touch, pain, cold / heat)
The tear resistance of a healthy skin is up to 90 kgs per centimeter; this means, that
you could hang a man with a weight of 90 kgs on a centimeter of skin and it would not
break!

If we imagine, that the skin contains about 5'000 sensory nerves, 400 nerve fibers and
200 nociceptors („pain receptors“), we slowly gain an idea of the importance to protect
this highly sensitive organ against aggressive influences at our best possible.
Dermatosis, Allergies, Eczemas
How does it come to a skin disease?
This question is fast answered: The skin is in
contact with harmful substances every day. The skin
ph value becomes weakened, the skin reacts with
an irritation.
Consequences are first reddenings, maybe itching;
the skin is dry and tautens.
The final result is a so-called Abrasion Dermatosis
(rough, chapped skin).
The barrier function of the skin is destroyed and
potential allergens (but also pathogenic agents as
bacteria and viruses) can penetrate easily.
The creeping consequences of such a cumulative
irritation are serious:
Skin diseases as Dermatosis, Allergies and Eczemas are unpleasant, painful and do
not look and feel very nice.
With the hands we are acting – or maybe not (anymore). Skin diseases as mentioned
above are not only cost-, but the treatment also very time-intensive and affect the
quality of life of the concerned in a brutal way.
A simple shakehands for saying Hello becomes suddenly to an embarrassing
situation, to say nothing of the strain of a relationship which can be caused by such a
skin disease or the fact, that maybe even the job must be changed in order to gain
control of the skins heavy reactions.

Skin diseases nowadays make out about a quarter of all occupational diseases, this
means, that they could be reduced during the last years because of adequate
information and education and introduction of protective measures initiated by the
companies. But nevertheless it keeps still on a high level.

Skin Protection according to the 3-Steps-Concept
The basic principle of a careful skin care consists of 3 steps:
- Skin protection (before work and after breaks)
- Skin cleaning (after work and before breaks)
- Skin care (after work)
Skin protection: Prevent or at least attenuate the contact between skin and harmful
substances
Skin cleaning: Gentle but effective cleaning of dirty skin
Skin care: Giving nutrients back to the stressed skin and supporting the
healing of already existing skin damages
For each of these three steps the Swiss company Turimed AG offers adapted
compounds, which are recommended by physicians and also prescribed for therapy.
We have tested these products intensively during the last three months and the results
have been so convincing that we have integrated them straight away in our
“inventory”.
All involved employees (Production Dpt.) confirmed the outstanding productiveness
(very economical in consumption) and the highly efficiency.
Furthermore they accentuated the very high skin tolerance.
All tested compounds found concordant acceptance with our staff.
