FOOD AND HORTICULTURE
Geelong has a long history in the food processing
sector particularly, meat, poultry and seafood.
Over recent years relative cost benefits for
producers has led to the City becoming a popular
location for niche food market activities including
wine making, land based aquaculture, rabbit
processing, olive processing, cut flowers and
cultivated turf.
Geelong is home to a large number of food
processors, many of whom source their products
locally and from the State’s bountiful western
district. A growing proportion of Geelong’s
workforce is employed in the processing of food
products such as poultry, beef and seafood.
Bartter Enterprises (Steggles) is Australia’s second
largest poultry producer with six plants located
across Australia including one in Geelong.
MC Herd is best known throughout Victoria and
internationally for the superior quality of its meat
products.
Seafood processing continues to grow to match
domestic and international demand for a wide
range of products, including wild catch, mussels
and manufactured seafood products. More
recently, the City has become a home to a number
of land based aquaculture activities for products
such as abalone that are being used for valueadded
products.
The Geelong Region is renowned for the
production of high quality wines. There are
28 vineyards spread across the Region producing
internationally recognised brands including
Scotchmans Hill, Pettavel Wines and
Bannockburn Wines.
