Mackanate
Sulfosuccinates are ideal
surfactants for
ultra-mild,
non-irritating
bath and cleansing products
Mildness is an essential attribute for a product that
may be used on a daily basis and that is in direct
contact with the skin and used around the eyes. For
the formulator, the incorporation of mild ingredients
into personal care products is vital. To the same
extent, the versatility of these ingredients when
building viscosity, conditioning and foam also becomes
a key factor.
Mackanate Sulfosuccinate surfactants are especially
tailored to these needs. They are extremely mild to
both skin and eyes and reduce the irritation of
traditionally used surfactants. They can be used in a
wide range of products from bath, shampoos and skin
cleansers to niche applications such as hospital
cleansers, acne-treatments and baby wipes.
Depending on the desired properties, the formulator
must choose a specific sulfosuccinate type. This guide
presents the various options and recommends the
preferred ingredients for each application.
McIntyre sulfosuccinates were compared to a variety of other chemistries,
including sodium cocoyl glutamate, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, C8-16
polyglucoside (APG), and sodium laureth-2 sulfate. Throughout this catalog,
these products are called Glutamate, Sarcosinate, Alkyl Polyglucoside and
SLES-2, respectively.
APG is a registered trademark of Cognis.
Sulfosuccinates can be divided into two
types: Diester and Monoester.
The Monoester type is ideal for personal
care applications. It is a good foamer and
mild to skin and eyes.
further divided into two types: Amido and
Amido Type
sulfosuccinates
For the shampoo market, the amido type
sulfosuccinates are preferred because of their
mildness to the eyes. In addition, the higher
molecular weight types provide mild conditioning
when combined with anionic surfactants.
The amido type sulfosuccinates are widely used in
specialty products such as children’s, non-allergenic
and anti-dandruff shampoos.
Because of their low cost and low irritation, the
amido sulfosuccinates often partially replace mild
amphoteric surfactants.
These sulfosuccinates also provide thickening and
excellent conditioning effects in skin cleansers.
Alcohol Type sulfosuccinates
Bath products have been a major
growth area for sulfosuccinates; in
particular, the ethoxylated alcohol type
being the most widely used. It imparts
excellent foam properties, is mild to
both skin and eyes and mollifies the
irritation of other anionic surfactants.
Specifically, the ability of the alcohol type
sulfosuccinates to reduce the irritation of
sodium laureth sulfate make them ideal
for children’s products.
Reduced irritation and optimum foam are
also particularly important when
formulating hand, facial and body
cleansers.
Silicone Type sulfosuccinates
The silicone sulfosuccinates are
novel, patented anionic
surfactants that feature
extremely low irritation scores,
making them the recommended
choice for gentle skin cleansing
and specialty applications.
Mackanate DC-50 and DC-100
are self-preserving, therefore
no preservatives are contained
in these ingredients. Due to its
powdered form, Mackanate
DC-100 is ideal for anhydrous
applications.
When blended with alkyl ether
sulfates, the Mackanate silicone
sulfosuccinates impart a
mollifying effect on eye
irritation potential.
Mackanate
Sulfosuccinates
mild,
are extremely
unlike any other anionic
Due to their mildness, the use of sulfosuccinates has been
expanded to specialty applications such as surgical scrubs,
baby wipes, geriatric products, hospital hand cleaners and
germicidal cleaners.
Sulfosuccinates also aid in reducing the overall irritation
caused by other anionic surfactants. The ethoxylated alcohol
type has the ability to reduce the irritation of SLES-2
without significantly reducing foam. This is especially
important for bath products.
The Amido type sulfosuccinates are an excellent choice to
combine thickening, mildness and conditioning properties in
skin cleansers and specialty shampoos.
Mackanate DC-50 and DC-100 are unique, silicone based
sulfosuccinates ideal for applications where ultra-mildness is
needed. Some examples are anti-acne treatments, facial
cleansers, baby wipes, baby shampoo and sensitive-skin
bodywashes.
The HET-CAM test was performed as an alternative to the Draize Eye Irritation Test.
The maximum score per Hen’s egg CAM (chorioallantoic membrane) is 32; results are an
average of four trials. Samples were run at 5% active, simulating 10% active in the Draize test.
The Mackanate line offers tremendous flexibility to the formulator. For applications where the sulfosuccinate will be
medium to high foam, the alcohol type and medium-chain amido types are preferred. For mild, low foam applications
the silicone type and Mackanate RM are best suited. In general, the Mackanate line outperformed the Glutamate and
the Sarcosinate benchmarks.
