While Charles Warren of Sparta was drilling for water at the 20th Century Motor Court on highway No. 3 near lona, Elgin county, a pocket of gas was struck in the drift, which blew muddy water over objects in the surrounding area. The mud soon froze to form a spectacular coating of ice.
Ground Water in Ontario, 1951 and 1952 BY A. K. Watt INTRODUCTION Ground water continues to be of increasing concern in many parts of the province. Its purity, coldness, and economy of development usually make it preferable to other sources of supply. The use of larger amounts of ground water for agricultural, domestic, industrial, and municipal purposes has resulted in a steady increase in requests for information on its availability. Reference to other well data and an understanding of local geological conditions form the basis of intelligent appraisal of ground-water resources. Purpose and Scope of Report Measurements of water-level fluctuations in a number of observation wells and ground-water data from all wells drilled for water in Ontario during 1951 and 1952 are assembled for reference in this report. Two previous reports 1 covered the period 1947-50. The principles of the occurrence of ground water were discussed in detail in part 11, volume LX, of the Department and will not be enlarged upon here. This report does repeat, in a few instances, some of the information provided in the earlier reports but only where such information is needed in the interpre tation of data assembled here. Detailed water surveys were conducted during the summer months in the townships of Chinguacousy and Toronto, Peel County. The results of these will be published separately. Acknowledgments The co-operation of municipal officials, and other persons concerned with the measurement of water levels in observation wells, is gratefully acknowledged. The water-well drillers have continued to improve the quality of the well records filed with the Department and have thus helped to increase the value of this publication to themselves and others. GEOGRAPHY Topography Ontario has three main physiographic regions. Most of the area lying north of lines drawn rather irregularly from Midland to Kingston and from Brockville to Pembroke is part of the large physiographic region known as the Precambrian, or Canadian, Shield.
