Lawrence Tynes’ 54-yard field-goal attempt in the final seconds fell a few feet shy of the
uprights, as the Giants loss to their NFC East foe, the Philadelphia Eagles, 19-17. The loss
dropped the Giants to 2-2, with both losses coming to division rivals.
The first half of this game was dominated by the defenses. The lone touchdown of the
half came when Eagles’ wide receiver DeSean Jackson got open in the secondary as
Michael Vick found him in the left corner of end zone, with 1:47 left in the half. The Giants
quickly responded with a field goal from Tynes with 0:05 left in the half as the Eagles took
a 7-3 lead into the half.
Both teams’ offenses seemed to come alive in the second half. After Eagles’ kicker Alex
Henery made a 20 yard field goal to extend their lead to 10-3 on the first drive of the
second half, the Giants came back on the very next drive tie the game at 10 apiece, when
Eli Manning hit Victor Cruz on a slant route. Cruz then broke a tackle, and waltzed into
the end zone on the 14 yard pass from Manning, for his second score of the season. The
Eagles got another field goal from Henery on their next drive, a 48 yarder, to give the
Eagles the lead again, at 13-10.
The back and forth scoring would continue, as the Eagles were led by Vick and running
back LeSean McCoy. Henery was set up with a 26 yard attempt that narrowly made it
through the right side of the goal post, to give the Eagles the lead again, at 19-17, with
1:49 left in the game.
The Giants’ final drive had a sloppy start, which included a fumble and a near interception
on the first two plays. However, Giants’ wide receiver Ramses Barden, who had a career
game last week against the Panthers, drew two defensive pass interference calls that
gained 29 yards total for the Giants. However, on a deep pass intended for him, he was
called for offensive pass interference, moving the ball back to the 37-yard line, setting up
Tynes’ potential game-winning field goal that fell short.
