GETRAG PowerShift Transmission 6DCT250
The extremely flexible Six-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission for medium Front-Transverse
Applications
Getrag Powershift is the product line of state-of-the-art dual
clutch transmissions from Getrag. They combine the
convenience of a conventional automatic transmission with
the direct response characteristics and high degree of
efficiency of a manual transmission. All Getrag Powershift
transmissions work without interrupting the power flow and
achieve a reduction in fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions
of 4 - 12 % compared to conventional automatic
transmissions. With the 6DCT250 with dry dual clutch and
electromechanical actuators, consumption reductions of up
to 20 % are achieved. The oil in the 6DCT250 is retained for
life, which results in considerable advantages in terms of
maintenance and running costs.
The 6DCT250 six-speed transmission was designed for front-transverse installation in the mid-sized and
compact vehicle segment for torques up to a maximum of 280 Nm. It can be combined with all-wheel drive as
well as an engine start/stop function without modification of the hardware. Combined with an electric motor, the
transmission can also be used in a hybrid drive.
The shortened response times during the gearshift process (compared to conventional multi-step automatic
transmissions with a torque converter) allow for greater driving pleasure and provide a more direct driving
experience. Thanks to the transmission control system that allows individual adaptation of all shifts, it is
possible to provide multiple driving profiles (comfortable, sporty, etc.).
Compared to the conventional hydrodynamic converter, dual clutches offer the advantage of targeted actuation
resulting in optimized vehicle launch and gearshift processes with respect to the dynamics and driving comfort.
In addition, Getrag Powershift transmissions combine the high degree of efficiency of a manual transmission
with an application-specific shifting strategy, thereby resulting in a considerable reduction of fuel consumption
and CO 2 emissions compared to conventional automatic transmissions. The transmission control, embedded in
a mechatronic module, also works directly with the engine management system. The actuator system for the
clutch and gearshift actuation is run electromechanically.
The 6DCT250 front-transverse transmission has six forward gears and one reverse gear. The even (2, 4, 6, R)
and odd-numbered gears (1, 3, 5) are divided into two partial transmissions. The engine and the two partial
transmissions are connected by means of a dry dual clutch.
The transmission is designed as a product for the global market with a consistent common-part strategy.
Depending on the requirement, a clutch with dampened plates or a version with a dual mass flywheel can be
used. In general, these versions can also be combined with one another. The extremely high flexibility in the
application makes it possible to adapt the transmission quickly and efficiently to the customer requirements by
means of minimal and in most cases already standardized adjustments. The main functional elements such as
clutch, gearshift, actuators, control unit and synchronization are designed for various applications as common
parts. The common-part strategy not only allows for the product flexibility demanded by the market, it also
makes it possible to implement all customer versions on only one production line and therefore to react quickly
and efficiently to market requirements. In terms of shifting quality and comfort, the 6DCT250 compares well
against the conventional automatic transmissions with torque converters and even wet dual clutch
transmissions. We consistently referenced the experiences with the Getrag Powershift transmissions already
introduced on the market in developing the 6DCT250. With respect to the degree of efficiency and consumption,
transmissions with dry dual clutches and electromechanical actuators set the standard through minimized
losses.
About Getrag Powershift
Getrag Powershift is Getrag's product line for modern dual clutch transmissions. They combine the comfort of a
conventional automatic transmission with the direct responding behaviour and the high degree of efficiency of a
manual transmission. All Getrag Powershift transmissions work without torque interruption and when compared
to conventional automatic transmissions at a vehicle level achieve a 5 – 10 % reduction in fuel consumption and
CO 2 emission - depending on application, even up to 15 %. The high flexiblity in the selection of transmission
ratios in connection with further optimised transmission efficiency characteristics is an important basic principle.
