Reporter Training<br />
This two-hour online program provides training related<br />
to the identification and reporting of child abuse as<br />
specified by Iowa Code 232.69(3).<br />

Alternate Assessment (State 1% System)<br />
GH<strong>AEA</strong> supports the Iowa Alternate Assessment (IAA)<br />
System, which utilizes a body of evidence/rating scale<br />
approach to measure student performance on the<br />
Content Standards and Benchmarks. The Iowa Alternate<br />
Assessment is for students with the most significant<br />
cognitive disabilities whose academic performance is<br />
appropriately judged against alternate achievement<br />
standards. The Iowa Alternate Assessment measures<br />
student performance in reading, mathematics and<br />
science. It is used in lieu of the Iowa Tests for a small<br />
number of students with IAA indicated as a need in their<br />
Individual Education Program.<br />

Annual Progress Report (APR)<br />

effective APRs to local districts. GH<strong>AEA</strong>’s APR reports<br />

A consortium of districts collaboratively purchases/<br />
leases assessment templates and data services. Templates<br />

Basic Reading Inventory (BRI). Training and consultation<br />
in use of the tools are provided.<br />

Assistive technology consultants work with the Early<br />
ACCESS or local school staff to provide assessment,<br />

Follow-up consultation for support and implementation<br />
of strategies is available. Annual trainings offered include<br />
Autism Cadre, Parent Institute and Early Childhood<br />

Brain Injury Resource Team<br />
The Brain Injury Resource Team provides services to<br />
students who have suffered a brain injury due to an<br />
accident, brain tumor and subsequent treatment,<br />
infection, concussion, stroke, seizure or other medical<br />
emergency. Services typically begins with transition from<br />
the hospital back to school following an injury or illness.<br />
Other services include onsite consultation with provision<br />
of strategies to assist learning, memory and manage<br />

Collaboration plans are formal plans facilitated by<br />
GH<strong>AEA</strong> with each of its school districts every year. The<br />
plan is based on data, clearly defines expectations and<br />
prioritizes GH<strong>AEA</strong> school improvement support needed<br />
for the upcoming school year.<br />

Community-Youth Connections<br />
The staff of the Community-Youth Connection provides<br />
a variety of services to schools and communities for the<br />
prevention of risky behaviors by youth such as substance<br />
use, dropout, teen pregnancy and suicide. The program<br />
utilizes a positive youth development framework for<br />
families, schools and communities to provide children<br />
and youth essential developmental building blocks to<br />
become successful adults. Program staff also assists<br />
school personnel in using evidence-based strategies and<br />
programs that reduce high risk choices by youth,<br />
particularly youth living in high-risk environments.<br />

Competent Private Instruction<br />
Parents are allowed to provide an education to their own<br />
children through competent private instruction. This is<br />
also commonly called “home schooling.” <strong>Green</strong> <strong>Hills</strong><br />
<strong>AEA</strong> provides consultation to both schools and parents<br />
regarding competent private instruction. When a child<br />
has a disability, the permission of the <strong>Green</strong> <strong>Hills</strong> <strong>AEA</strong><br />
Special Education Director is required for a parent to<br />
home school.<br />

Comprehensive Improvement Plan (CIP)<br />
<strong>AEA</strong>s engage in continuous improvement designed to<br />
enhance services that provide support for improved<br />
student learning. The CIP includes goal setting, action<br />

Iowa school districts are required by state law to update<br />

This department provides desktop publishing, graphics,<br />

letterhead, flashcards and spiral binding. Please allow a<br />

Health Advisory Team (HAT)<br />
The Health Advisory Team (HAT) provides assistance<br />
and resources to educational settings where individuals<br />
are in need of an individual health care plan. The<br />
resource team consists of persons with expertise in<br />
school nursing, special education nursing, special<br />
education administration, parenting and early childhood.<br />
HAT members are available to consult with teams who<br />
are developing educational health care plans for students<br />
in need of special health services.<br />

HEART Database<br />
HEART (Heartland Educational Resource Toolbox) is a<br />
large-scale student assessment data system developed as<br />
a free service by Heartland Area Education Agency.<br />
HEART is designed to hold district-wide assessment<br />
data, imported directly from a variety of formats,<br />
including ITBS/ITED, Iowa Collaborative Assessment<br />
Modules (ICAM) and Northwest Evaluation<br />
Association’s measures of Academic Progress (NWEA<br />
MAP). There is an additional behavior module designed<br />
to store student behavior referral information which can<br />
be analyzed and used for decision-making.<br />

Homebound Program<br />
This program is designed to serve students who are<br />
confined to their homes or to a hospital because of a<br />
temporary or long-term physical problem who are<br />

endeavors.<br />

Hospital Program (Psychiatric Unit)<br />
The <strong>AEA</strong> provides on-site classroom instruction to<br />
students who are hospitalized and receive treatment on<br />

Human Relations<br />
A human relations course is offered to educators who<br />
need recertification or graduate credit. The course is<br />

services (three to 21); and the transition of high school<br />
