Soccer match with Vanuatu
Sport and Education work together
Faith Lutheran College, Redlands has a history of students and
staff going to Vanuatu for Service Learning; this term it was host
to a team of enthusiastic Vanuatu Soccer players from the village
of Mele, which is just North West of Port Vila.
Team Manager, Phillip Malas brought the young men to Australia,
not only to test their skill against local Brisbane teams but also to
show the players what is out in the world and what is possible
through education and commitment. Phillip, who also runs the
largest Indigenous Tour company in Vanuatu, is on a mission to
show Vanuatu youth how important education is for them, so they
can move out of poverty and contribute to their community.
Many of the young Vanuatu men have never been out of their
homeland and enjoyed the many new experiences. The team
were shown around the classrooms and facilities at Faith Lutheran
College before having a friendly Soccer match with the College’s
Senior Soccer team.
The visit was appropriate, as Faith students and staff have, over recent years, travelled to Vanuatu replacing their pens and text books for
hammers and nails to build classrooms for children living in third world conditions. For many of the students of Faith, the journey was a
huge learning experience. It is a project that these students are deeply passionate about and have instigated by themselves, after noticing
the appalling conditions children the same age face, living in cyclone ravaged Vanuatu communities.
Having these young men from Vanuatu come to Faith was a wonderful opportunity for both them and the Faith students. Faith student,
Max Brown said, “I just got to play Soccer with a guy who is on the National Vanuatu team. That is fantastic! They were so friendly and
respectful of us. Some of us had the opportunity to talk with them and learn how different their schooling is to ours.”
One of the Vanuatu team players said, “We have learnt so much in Australia and we are taking lots of new knowledge back to our
country. It is good that Faith teachers and students come to our country and show our young children new ways to learn. Our Coach tells
us we must get an education to have better lives.”
The bond between Faith and Vanuatu will grow as Faith students and staff again go to Vanuatu next year, to continue building a school and
bring educational supplies to the village of Fokona near Port Vila.

by North Kirra SLSC as the U14 Junior
Surf Life Saver of the Year.
Past Students Return
Year 12 is a special year, filled with challenges, rewards
and important ‘rites of passage’ as plans are developed
for 2013 and life beyond school. Our Year 12 students
recently had the opportunity to share time with some of
our past students. It was a very valuable time as our past
students shared their collective wisdom about Year 12
and their journey since.
Our sincere thanks to James Recchi (2010), James Davis
(2009), Amelia Taylor (2010) and Hannah Lawrence
(2011) for working in partnership with our Heads of House
and Year 12 students to share their valuable experiences
of life at Faith and beyond.

Thank you to our community for their efforts in
Term 1 in raising money for the families of our
sister school Faith Plainland. $2,742.70 was
raised which will go directly to families
severely affected by the recent flooding. Thank

Redlands District Junior Swimming Competition
In an outstanding show of determination and style, Faith Junior and Middle
School students won both the Overall Aggregate and Percentage Shields in the
Redlands District Junior Swimming Competition. Having trained long and hard
for this competition, it was a well-earned win. Over 25 students competed in the
Swimming Competition from Faith against the 28 other Primary schools in the
Redlands District.

Faith Lutheran College, Redlands has been given the privilege of providing the band for the
Dawn Service at Villers-Bretonneux, France on ANZAC Day 2013.
Faith’s Western Front Tour Band departs for France on 11 April for a 15 day concert tour of
Paris, Belgium and the Somme region, culminating in the Dawn Service for ANZAC Day.
Ancestors
While all our students are honoured to be
performing at the Dawn Service, these
students have an ancestral connection that
they are especially proud of. These men
all fought at the Western Front.
Nine members of the Faith Lutheran College Junior Swimming team were
selected to represent Redlands in the upcoming Metropolitan East trials held at
the Chandler Pool.
The Faith Junior Swimming team competed at the Inter–Lutheran Swimming
Championships at St Peters College and a week later the annual JTAS
Swimming Carnivals. They competed once again against Ormiston College and
John Paul College, coming second overall. Congratulations on a great
achievement.

A Parent Night to Remember!
Over 120 parents and staff from Faith and our extended community,
gathered in the SPAH on Link Road to listen to a captivating and inspiring
address by Peter Janetzki, a well-known accomplished Counsellor and
Educator.
Peter’s presentation, Building Resilience: Bounce back or break; included
sage advice for every age and stage of life. After explaining what resilience
was and how it worked, Peter left us with ten tips on how to build resilience in
our children. The feedback from all attendees was overwhelmingly positive.
Notes and a recording of the presentation will be made available to all
interested parents on our College website.
The evening ended with light refreshments and the opportunity to consult with
our visiting therapists. We would

The threat of storm couldn’t keep the 400+ parents, students and staff from enjoying
an amazing evening put on by the P & FA.
We are so blessed to have such strong support from our community.

iPad Bootcamp
It has been very exciting seeing the students
setting up their iPads and working hard to ensure
their device is ready for learning.
All students participate in the ‘Bootcamp’ which
helped kick start their learning and the College will
be continuing to support the students by offering
further training.
ISC iPAD / EDMODO / eLEARNING HELP DESK
The ISC is open every lunch for iPad and
eLearning support.
iPad training makes a
huge impact!
At the P&FA meeting in March Vanessa Noonan,
Faith’s eLearning Co-ordinator, led a workshop
session for parents on some of the ways that iPads
are being used in learning at our College. In
particular, she led us through using the learning
management tool ‘Edmodo’ and also demonstrated
how the ebooks are being used. It was a very
interactive session which has parents engaged in
using the iPads, just as the students do in our
College.
The time has arrived, so quickly, for our Faith Western Front Tour Band to depart for France. As
these students start on this memorable and outstanding journey, we wish them well and very
success.
If their performance at Open Day is anything to go by, the ABC and ANZAC Day audiences will
be impressed not only by the beautiful sound the band creates, but by the maturity and
confidence of these young musicians.

Inter-school Chess Championship
Congratulations to our first team who took first place out of 23 teams in the Primary B Division! First
team players, Alastair Gray, Owen Jackson, Nathan Francisco and Michael Reil also won merit
ribbons for achieving 4.5 or more points out of a possible 7.
Eight students from our Junior School attended the first quarterly Inter-school’s Chess Championship
for the South Brisbane Region at Stretton State College in March. Our second team consisting of Jack
Sutton, Alessandro Given, Oliver Gray and Jeremy Johns also faired extremely well. Jack and Jeremy
only missed a merit ribbon by .5. For some of these students it was their first competition. The students’
behaviour throughout the day was impeccable and we are very proud of their achievements. The next
Inter-school competition will be held on Thursday, 13 June.

2013 Student Leaders participated in leadership training at the end of 2012 to prepare them for their
leadership roles in 2013. Teamwork and the core values of Faith Lutheran College were at
the centre of their thinking and active planning for the
year ahead.
Junior School Leaders
Learning to be a Leader at Faith starts in the Junior
School and is consistently developed through Middle
and then Senior School. Junior School students
proactively get involved in experiencing a variety of
leadership roles and opportunities. Every Year 6
student has a ‘Position of Responsibility’, that they
take ownership of. This hands on approach continues

into Middle School, where the Year 9 Leaders take
active roles in running events and camps.
Student Leaders in the Senior School are fine tuning
their leadership skills, taking active roles in leading the
College’s Sporting Carnival, Assemblies, Worship and
Service Learning events. Initiating and rallying
support for causes such as the 40 Hour Famine, Faith
Missionary work in Vanuatu and Relay for Life shows
the joy they gain in supporting their community locally
and overseas.
