What is Advent?
The Church divides the year into different seasons that emphasise the life of Christ
and the life of the Church. Beginning on Sunday, 2 December 2012, we will enter
the season of the Church year called Advent. Advent is a four-week season of
preparation and anticipation leading up to Christmas, on 25 December 2012 and
continuing to Epiphany on 6 January 2013.
The focus of Advent is two-fold. On the one hand, we prepare to celebrate the birth
of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came into the world as both God and man so that our sins might be
forgiven. On the other hand, we anticipate the day when Jesus will return to Earth and bring an end to this
world. Those will be scary days, but we can look forward to the end of the world with hope because through
faith in Jesus, the end of this world will mean the beginning of a new life with Christ for eternity.
Advent, then, is a time for us to repent and believe. Knowing that Jesus was born to forgive our sins, we repent
(admit our failures to God) and believe that we are forgiven because of the death and resurrection of Jesus
on our behalf. Also, knowing that Jesus is coming back, we repent and believe that when He returns, He will
give us eternal life. http://www.lhm.org/advent/advent.asp
SENIOR SCHOOL
ACADEMIC FOCUS
Year 11 students continue to be engaged in the process of academic rigour through beginning their academic
work for 2013 throughout this week. We encourage our students to continually seek the professional
assistance of our experienced and dedicated staff as they ready themselves for their Year 12 studies. An
essential part of this ongoing learning is evaluation and as students’ vision for future careers and studies
evolves, our Year 11 students will all participate in an individual review of their Senior Education and
Training (SET) Plan this week and revisit this again in Year 12.
Throughout this week, all Year 10 students are learning about the world of work and the demands and
challenges it has to offer through this time of Work Experience. We look forward to them sharing their
reflections of their experience.
MIDDLE SCHOOL HOUSE CHESS COMPETITION – 2012
During Term 4, students were involved in an Inter-House Competition to
determine the winner of this year’s Middle School House Chess Competition.
The standard of matches played varied between the beginner level through
to some very competitive, high standard games. Some students are now
displaying a pleasing level of expertise and knowledge of the game. Each
House was represented by two teams of four players, with one player in each
team required to come from Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 with each team having
at least one girl. Each House played all of the other Houses throughout the
event. In some teams, the students were reluctant to allow anyone else the chance to take their spot in
representing their House.
There were several players who remained undefeated at the conclusion of the competition. These included:
• Lachlan Mahaffey (Year 7), Nicholas Budden (Year 8) (from Peel).
• Rachel Viegas (Year 9), Taylor Hannan (Year 9), Emily Ward (Year 9), Liam Wade (Year 7), Nathan
Annand (Year 7) (all from Russell).
• Austin Read (Year 9), Jamie McCutcheon (Year 8) (both from Macleay).
• Reilly Jones (Year 8), Jaymee Gilbert (Year 7) (from Coochie)
The team scores stayed fairly close to each other throughout the competition. Different teams displayed
dominance at different times and fortunes of each House varied after successive rounds. The final results
were:
PLACE
4th place
3rd place
2nd place
1st place
Congratulations to all students who participated in this year’s competition. It’s wonderful to see the high
involvement in this year’s event.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES 2013
Thank you to all families for participating in the initial registration for 2013 Extra Curricular activities. This
information enabled us to make clearer plans for 2013, including the registration of TAS sporting teams
by the deadline, as required, last Friday. We appreciate the commitment of our students and parents to
these wider community activities, knowing how we are building our ‘assets’ in our children through their
involvement. As you would have noticed, there are a wide range of activities on offer, covering lunch times,

after school and Saturday morning sessions. We are confident that all students should have been able to
fi nd something to appeal to their interests and their skills, and look forward to a positive year of enthusiastic
involvement by our student community.
SEMESTER 2 AWARDS ASSEMBLY – MONDAY, 3 DECEMBER – 1:45PM
All parents are invited to attend our Semester 2 Awards Assembly this Monday afternoon, 3 December in
The Lighthouse (L Block) at 1:45pm. Awards will be presented for Academic, Sporting, Service and Loyalty
and Cultural achievements.
MIDDLE SCHOOL END OF YEAR WORSHIP AND AWARDS EVENING
WEDNESDAY, 5 DECEMBER – 7PM
All families are asked to attend this special time of awards presentations as we recognise the achievements
of our students over the past year in Academic, Sporting, Service and Loyalty and Cultural areas. Our Year
9’s journey through the Middle School is also featured during the evening as an important milestone.
Being part of our Christ centred community also turns our focus to celebrating the close of the 2012
academic year through worshipping together. We look forward to joining as a Middle School community
and celebrating these signifi cant events with you all throughout the night’s program.
Students are reminded that they are all required to attend in full dress uniform. This includes trousers, ties
and blazers for boys and blazers for girls. Students are also asked to polish their shoes and to be well
groomed, meeting College expectations regarding hairstyles and jewellery.
(Reminder – Blazer pick-up! A few blazers remain at Totally Workwear after the pocket and embroidery work
has been completed. Please collect these as soon as possible, so that your child can present themselves
as required for our special formal evening.)
TAS SPORT 2013
As outlined in the initial rollout of the TAS Sports uniforms early this year, the year for
encouraging the wearing of these uniforms has passed. As of 2013, the TAS Sports
uniforms will be a compulsory aspect of student TAS team involvement. Unlike other
schools which require specifi c items for specific sports, we have designed a range of
items that are multi-purpose. The garments are made out of high quality fabric and are
constructed to give many years of use. When items are purchased, it should be with
the fl exibility of their purpose in mind, so the initial outlay will not only serve that particular sport, but the
items can be used for other sports in a mix and match range, further down the track. Our teams will look
sharp and feel more confident in how they present themselves – all positive for encouraging optimum
performance!
GOLD STAR DAY
Next Tuesday, 4 December is our annual end of year ‘Gold Star Day’ celebrations, students
will have a fun day at Wet ’n’ Wild. All students are reminded to wear their full sports uniform
including sports cap and are required to bring their own lunch and morning tea along or
money to purchase food. Students need to arrive at the College to assemble in the Hayshed
by 8:25am and will return by 3:15pm. Students not attending Wet ’n’ Wild will participate in
activities supervised by College staff and can attend school in their sports uniform.
MT BINGA – BINGA BLOG
Sunday, 25 November: Today was a relaxing day. We chilled out and enjoyed the free time. Some of us
spent time with the horses while others played Basketball. We had chapel which was about helping each
other and pulling our weight. This was very relevant as we all need to work as a team to make this camp a
good one. We did washing and it feels great to have clean clothes again.
Some people visited the Resurrection Garden which freaked everyone out because it was in the forest and
a bit run-down, and some people even freaked themselves out. Tomorrow the boys go on solo which they
are really excited about. We are all looking forward to making our last week a fun and exciting one.
PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOURS PRESENTATION FOR CHILDREN
School Community Liaison Officer, Senior Constable Nathan Vaughan addressed the
students about ‘protective behaviours’ strategies at assembly on Friday. Constable
Vaughan specifi cally addressed ‘early warning signs’ in his presentation. A summary of
his message is found in the red text and comes from the Queensland Police Service’s
‘Protective Behaviours for Children’ website: http://www.police.qld.gov.au/programs/
cscp/personalSafety/children/Protective+Behaviours+For+Children.htm
Protective Behaviours emphasises and positively reinforces two corresponding core concepts:
Early warning signs
Children are encouraged to recognise their feelings of safety in different situations. When we feel unsafe,
our bodies tell us through physical sensations that something is wrong. Within the program these sensations

are called early warning signs; however you may refer to them as natural instincts, gut feelings or intuition.
Children are encouraged to identify their early warning signs, for example, butterflies in the stomach,
sweaty hands, goose bumps, racing heart, and the situations in which they can occur.
There are generally three types of situations where we experience early warning signs:
1. When we feel unsafe, but are having fun and are in control of the situation – i.e. it is our choice to be
there. For example, watching a scary movie, diving off a high tower or riding a roller coaster.
2. When we feel unsafe, it is not fun, but we are still in control. For example, going to the dentist or sitting
an exam.
3. When we feel unsafe, it is not fun and we have no control over the situation. These situations are
personal emergencies as the child is in danger of losing control over what happens to them. For
example, being lost, being bullied, or being abused by a relative.
In a personal emergency, children are encouraged to:
• use safety strategies and personal networks to regain control of the situation and restore them to a state
of physical and emotional safety;
• dial triple zero (000) if in immediate danger; and or
• report non-urgent incidents by calling their local police station or Policelink on 131 444.
Networks
Children are encouraged to develop a ‘Safety Network’ of trusted adults who will listen to them, believe
them and help them if they need help. Ideally, a child’s network should consist of at least five trusted adults
chosen by them who are available, supportive, trustworthy and willing to listen. They should also be willing
to take action, if needed, in order to help the child feel and be safe again.
Networks of trusted people should be people children can talk to about all things, whether they are good
or of a concern to them.
Additionally, when a child experiences a ‘personal emergency’ they should be encouraged to:
• seek assistance from their network in order to restore their feelings of safety;
• dial triple zero (000) if in immediate danger; and or
• report non-urgent incidents by calling your local police station or Policelink on 131 444.
Special thanks to our College Safety House Committee for organising Senior Constable Vaughan’s visit.
CHRISTMAS CRAFT STALL
On Monday, 26 November students from Prep - Year 6 brought money to buy some gifts
for their families and friends. It was held in the Chapel with a variety of unique presents.
Some very kind Year 7 and 11 students helped out and some parents were generous
to give up their time to help. We thank everyone for helping to make it a success.
Everyone who brought money was satisfied with what they purchased. It was a good
way to get Christmas presents for our loved ones without spending too much money.
All the money raised is going towards the P&FA, which is the Parents and Friends
Association. They help with projects around the College like shade sails and data projectors. Emily Verrall
SIX SECRET AGENT CADETS GRADUATE
The Secret Agent Society is an engaging program developed by Dr
Renae Beaumont which appeals to children’s sense of adventure
while they develop useful social skills. Six children and four staff
members had the opportunity to participate in this program through
a research project implemented by a psychology student from the
University of Queensland. The teachers and parents were also
encouraged to become actively involved as the students (cadets)
had regular home mission assignments to complete. The cadets
met over two lunch breaks each week sharing their lunch together and learning how to observe and detect
emotions as well as how to apply various social codes. They were rewarded if they had practised their
recently acquired skills at home or in the classroom. The program ran for ten weeks beginning in August.
The program ended last week with a well-deserved celebration. Congratulations Secret Agents!
FROM THE SPORTS DESK...
THE ASSOCIATED SCHOOLS (TAS SPORT)
Faith Lutheran College, Redlands involvement in the TAS Association has been an
opportunity for our students to be involved in competitive sports and games. Faith’s
membership in TAS enables all students to participate and represent the College
in various sports which are offered throughout the year. Membership in TAS (The
Associated Schools) enables boys and girls to represent their school in a variety of
summer and winter sporting fixtures against a number of Brisbane Schools.
Faith Lutheran College, Redlands has been involved in the TAS Sports Association for four years. The
College’s membership in TAS enables the students from Year 7 – 12 (starting from 2013 Year 7 will be
under the TAS banner and no longer JTAS) to participate and represent the College in the various sports
which are offered.
Whilst our sporting achievements are promoted and significant, this is refl ected by our nine Red Division
Premierships in four sports throughout 2012. However the College places its greatest emphasis upon skill
acquisition and participation for enjoyment. Therefore as our College moves forward we must honour our
commitment and ensure the continuation and growth within the TAS Association.
In 2013 all students are expected to be involved in at least 2 activities (one each semester - all co-curricular
activities - not just sport). Students were asked to complete an online nomination form for the activities
that they would like to be involved in for 2013. These forms were printed off and taken home for parental
consent.
This is an exciting time for our College as we move forward and offer our students a multi-faceted education.
Any families requiring additional information are invited to make direct contact with Mr Bruce Keys (Head
of Sport) for assistance.

JAPANESE NEWS...
DAN-DAN JAPANESE RED BELT
2012 Year 7 students are reminded that they will require their Dan-Dan Japanese
Red Belt text/work book in 2013 for their Year 8 Japanese studies. Under no circumstances should any
current Year 7 student dispose of this text/work book and ensure they have it to start the 2013 school year.
Due to the condition some of the Red Belt books are in, the supplier has kindly offered to re-bind
the books at no cost to our families. Over the course of this week we will be asking the Year 7
students to take their workbook to the ISC so that it can be boxed and returned to the supplier to be
repaired. We aim to do this in class time and in class lots, but please ensure your Year 7 student
has returned their NAMED Red Belt book to the ISC by Friday, 30 November. These books will be
returned early next year ready to start Term 1. Please ensure your child’s FIRST and LAST name
are clearly visible on the front of their book.
In addition, if there are any current Year 8 students that wish to donate their Dan-Dan text/work book at the
end of the 2012 school year, please hand the book in to the ISC or your relevant Sensei.
BUSHIDO SIXTEEN MOVIE
On Wednesday, 21 November the Year 9 Japanese students, accompanied by the Year 8 students that
have indicated their interest in learning Japanese next year, attended the screening of a new Japanese film.
The viewing of the movie, ‘Bushido 16’, served many purposes. It gave us an opportunity to interact with
those people with whom we may be travelling to Japan with next year, experience the contrasted ethnicity

of the Japanese (their customs and routines), enticed our love for the
Japanese language, and of course consolidated language we had learnt
over the year. It was particularly relevant to the Year 8 students, having
just completed a sports unit, and to usYyear 9 students, consolidating
our verbs and adjectives. It amazed us when we actually recognised
words in Japanese and knew the meaning of them during the movie!!
We also had a chance to learn about Japanese in a real world setting,
by becoming aware of the learning opportunities in the field of Japanese
after school, which was very rewarding as well. We had an amazing time observing the processes that
both Sanae and Kaori undergo both in terms of Kendo, and their relationship as Kendo elites. The action
scenes were also really cool and it was great to understand all the spirituality associated with this Japanese
martial art. We thank Miss Hyde for exposing us to this new movie, we had a great time.
JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST
We are very proud of Year 11 Japanese students Candice Strydom and Rosalie Mitson, who are both
taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test this Sunday. The JLPT is the largest-scale Japanese
language test in the world! The JLPT is widely recognised across corporate and government sectors as a
benchmark for proficiency measurement, and is also a strong motivator for students of Japanese language.
The test is held annually on the 1st Sunday of December, at Griffith University, Nathan Campus. The
JLPT N5 has been recognised as an ‘Enrichment’ unit from the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA),
and Queensland students who successfully pass the JLPT are eligible for two credit points towards their
Queensland Certificate of Education.
We wish Candice and Rosalie the best of luck as they complete the JLPT this Sunday!!!
Enjoy Japanese, Hyde Sensei jhyde@faithlutheran.qld.edu.au
